The legendary "Starkiller Ranch" Thread

I think putting Dooku on the Jedi Council is too radical. He is supposed to have too radical ideas to be on the Council ... but still influential and therefore in the midst of things anyway.
How about inserting him in the ceremonies at the end? It makes sense that he would visit the funeral of his former padawan. It would also come face-to-face with Palpatine ...

Episode 3: Fan Editing Ideas Discussion
Time
A fan on another board suggested that Anakin should throw away his Jedi lightsaber when he says "What have I done..." indicating that he is not worthy of being a Jedi. Maybe later, Sidious would give him the Darth Vader lightsaber, followed by Anakin's line "Thank you my master". (originally from the first scene)

It should be implied that Yoda would find Anakin's Jedi lightsaber on Coruscant. Yoda would later give it to Obi-Wan saying "Pass this on when the time is right". The latter scene might be hard to get.. but it would solve a few problems.

The Sith knighting ceremony is transferred to the hologram that Obi-Wan and Yoda watches in the Jedi recording room. The long "Darth ... Vader" with pause in the middle is replaced with Ian McDiarmid saying "Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith" from the "Musical Journey" DVD (came with soundtrack).

I do not like that Luke inherits a lightsaber that has been used to kill younglings, Shaak Ti and many other Jedi, so I am thinking of replacing Anakin's saber in those scenes with a red-bladed Darth Vader-saber. I know of people on other boards who bought the Anakin ROTS FX saber before the movie came out and later returned it because they were disgusted of what it had been used for.

There emerges a problem with continuity. Obi-Wan must acquire Anakin's lightsaber somehow.
The best idea (for continuity's sake) I have so far is to let Grievous capture the saber on board the Invisible Hand and let Obi-Wan get the saber on Utapau from Cody. Then I would have to paint it away from frames with Anakin wearing it and cut the scene with Anakin pointing it at Palpatine.
Another idea is to let Obi-Wan find it in Padmé's apartment. Cutting together these shots would be a challenge. At the very least I would have to insert dialogue from other movies, and I might have to insert a closeup of a fan's hands holding a replica Anakin saber.
I am also considering altering Anakin's clothing somewhat - make it darker, less brown, maybe add a chain and the larger Darth Vader belt buckle.

This would of course involve a lot of manual work, and I am not yet sure if it would be worthwhile.
What do you other people think of these changes? Would it improve the movie or not?

I have read through the script and I like what you are trying to do. The original sequence is my second favourite from Episode 1 and I think you have something here that would improve it.
I guess that what GL was trying to do with this scene, was to introduce us to the Jedi and in so doing show us how powerful they were in that era. The original dialogue "Have you ever encountered a Jedi knight, son.. We will not survive this" serves to underline this.
I would strive to keep that feeling in the edit if I was doing it.

Idea & found on ebay: 16mm film SCOPE Star Wars RETURN of THE JEDI MINT LPP
Time
The "Sniper" camera seems to be a regular analog video camera with NTSC resolution!
Read the "How the damned thing works.". (actual title of the page)

What we would want is a digital camera with high definition that can be run in a kind of "slave mode" where exposure is controlled by our custom software. Ideal would be a 4 megapixel web camera that can save uncompressed pictures. We want 1080p video, don't we.
I believe there exist ordinary digital cameras that can be put in a "webcam" mode.. but I have not found any info on them yet.

If obtaining good prints is a money issue, then we could start a web site for raising the necessary funds. I think everyone here would be willing to give at least $50 for a really good set of the Original-original trilogy.

If no company could be found that would be willing to digitize the film for the fan community, I believe a good digitizing rig could be built from an old projector and a digital camera with some special-purpose optics, hardware and software to step frame by frame.
I would not be surprised if the expertise to build it could be found on this board. We are not all high-school kids. I, myself am a software programmer who build replicas of Star Wars movie props in my spare time. I am sure there are engineers here that know optics, mechanics or electronics.

What is the REAL reason George doesn't want anyone to see the O-OT?
Time
I think it could be because his ex-wife Marcia Lucas edited the original movies and even won an Oscar for ANH while George Lucas lost. The SE were re-edited by other people. It could be because George hated his ex-wife, and it really sucks to be jealous of someone you hate.

I have heard a funny/sad thing about his ex-wife (depending on your point of view). If you ever get to Skywalker Ranch, you should never ever say ANYTHING about the stained glass windows. If GL happens to be nearby and hears you, you would be thrown out at once and banned for life.
The reason is that his ex-wife married one of the guys who built the windows ...
I was amazed when I heard this the first time, but it has been confirmed by several people.

I like the way you removed the transformation, Rebel Scumb. That had to go.
Although I really like the lightsaber fight between Palpy and Mace - the idea that his unorthodox fighting style is something the jedi were not prepared for.
I would also have preferred smoother deterioration. Maybe each active use of the Dark Side could be explained to increase the rate of deterioration.
I wonder if it would be worthwhile to alter his skin color to be less saturated before the duel and more blurry (to smoothen wrinkles) afterwards. I am not familiar with after effects tools at all, and am afraid that it might be too much manual work for too little effect.

When I look through the trailers I get the feeling that Palpatine's charge is longer there than in the movie... Perhaps those frames could replace the spinning. I'll have to rip and check frame by frame to be sure.

Hello. I am new to this thread. Editing ROTS is something that I want to do fer sure now that I have got the DVD.. It is much too bad to be left as is.

I would like to change the continuity errors at the end, if possible. Put a living Padmé on Alderaan and put Tarkin and the Death Star last.
I have this idea of letting each character look dreamily into a setting sun/moon/the Death Star, but I am not sure these radical edits would be possible.

I think it would be relatively easy to remove Boga the loud lizard, except for the Order 66-scene where shots have to be replaced with a newly composited Obi-Wan on a ledge.

I think it would be interesting if Imperial officers played by fans could be composited in here and there. What do you think of that idea?

If George had only changed Special effects for the SE and DVD, would people have complained as much?
Time
I don't hear many people complain about the many small FX changes that were actually made for the SE and the DVD (which could be seen as a new edition altogether). For instance, the moving Dewbacks and the corrected animation of the death star doors.
I am still amazed that a whole lot of things are left in. Most notably Vader's flipped chestbox in a shot during the duel with Obi-Wan in ANH.

IMO, the entire cast of creatures and droids created for the prequels were completely forgetable. The battle droids were a complete and utter joke. They looked like crap. They honestly looked like mechanical stick figures. And the creatures? Nute Gunray, Watto and Jar Jar all looked like crap.

Nute Gunray and half of the battle droids were puppets. As were most of the sets in the PT. I agree with you though. Too much CGI can easily be spotted as being CGI.

RotS: Secret Keeper Edition (* unfinished project *)
Time
You could not remove the spoiler completely, but you could make it go unnoticed for a slightly unattentive viewer by removing the obvious pieces and transforming the rest into hints. However, I think the lowering of the mask is one of the more powerful scenes in the film, so I would keep it in my own edit.

I would keep the birth but replace the sound with a voice-over of Obi-Wan, Yoda and Bail if a suitable dialogue can be found. Perhaps also cut the shots of Padmé's face as she names the babies.

I would also cut or shorten the Vader-naming, only because it is so hideous.

Worst changes to OT in '97 and '04
Time
My additions:
ANH:
- Luke talking to Biggs on Yavin like they are old friends. Who the h*ll is this guy? It does not make sense if we have not seen him before on Tatooine.

ROTJ:
- The new musical routine. It does not fit. Lapti Nek was delightfully alien, I loved it. The new routine is like a parody of Star Wars more than fitting in the Star Wars universe. It breaks suspension of disbelief - reminding us that what we are seeing is a movie.
- Hayden Christensen on the ROTJ-DVD. Now, who the h*ll is this guy!?
- The new Victory Celebration. There was nothing wrong with "yub nub...".
- Why show Theed, Mos Eisley and Cloud City..? They are not exactly the most important places in the galaxy... Better to show nothing at all.
