Girls have always been interested in Star Wars. Maybe they’re not wasting their time on a stupid forum or spending all their money on Mondo posters, but that doesn’t mean they don’t give a shit.

AFAIC: Not Getting Sithlord Cosplay Permanent Life-Debilitating Face Tattoo = Not Giving a Shit

She is Rey and she is a girl and is awesome. Deal with it.

Look, criticizing the character is perfectly fine! Just because she’s a woman shouldn’t put her above reproach. I don’t recall any of these criticisms being made against Leia, and she wasn’t exactly your everyday damsel in distress.

Leia was a superb heroine, plucky, courageous, charismatic and sharp-witted, and she averted many negative females-in-fantasy tropes, but the Imagineers at Disney realize that even though Leia should have been a ready-made role model, girls just really didn’t give a shit.
Cuz know what? Girls don’t give a shit about Star Wars.
So the Imaginariat went to the lab and created a purified formula of excess overpowered-ness, in hopes that if she’s outright omnipotent, girls will finally become interested in a role model in the Star Wars universe.
I guess we’ll see if that agenda worked, but it sure resulted in a forgettable, entirely unremarkable movie.

TV Tropes goes into some detail as to why the term has lost its meaning, but the gist of it is that it was originally intended to describe perfect female avatars of authors writing fanfiction, since at that time many online fanfictions were written by women. The term could also be used for perfect male author avatars (Gary Stu), but this term never saw wide usage since there already existed a term for this character: Action Hero (James Bond, John Matrix)

LOL! This is a ridiculous attempt at equivalence. And that’s the last I’m saying on this subject.

Thank god! Now we can all talk about Mary Sue shitwriting in peace!

The thing that’s most annoying about the “Rey phenomenon” (aka “Operation Squirrelface”) is that she’s not fulfilling any actual wishes of girls or women. She’s specifically designed to engineer and instill new wishes into a henceforth non-existent female fanbase.
And the committee responsible for her inception is so clumsy and obvious that they lacked any ideas of how to create this Herowoman for a New Millenium without making her an omnipotently overpowered Mary Sue avatar. It’s facile, lazy, dramatically bereft, and leaves nothing of emotional impact to take away from the movie.

And she’s not as cute as Leia '77.

You are missing the point. …it boils down to the fact that it is applied to women 99.2% of the time

Yeah, because the fact that the character is a precocious girl is part of what makes it such a transparently pandering trope.

while men get a free pass in the same situation.

I sure hope you mean “male characters,” since I don’t think any “men” have any superpowers, let alone overpowered omnipotence on Squirrelface’s level. And in any event, no they don’t. Movies with invincible male leads who are never in dramatic peril (such as most Steven Segal movies, where he never once gets hit) are as shitty and uninteresting as any Mary Sue vehicle.

Gotta love misogyny, amirite?

I think you’re using that word way too loosely.

The thing about Fink and his like are that they are unable to distinguish animus against a certain group from the mere rejection and derision of a SJW policy seeking societal upheaval for the purpose of conferring preferential treatment and artificial inflation of said group.
Just like calling those against reparations “RACEIST” or calling someone “genocidal” for advocating any rollback of welfare largesse. It’s a typical hysterical political ploy to preemptively shout down any “counterrevolutionary” dissent.

The film could have just as easily featured a young man with prodigious force powers - they decided to make the character female.

The film could have just as easily featured an extended apprenticeship for Rey - they decided to give her prodigious force powers.

These decisions are unrelated…

See, but they’re not.
The writers felt the need to make their heroine omnipotent because she’s a she, as part of the concerted effort on Disney’s part to gin up Mary Sue protagonists specifically for the social engineering goal of transforming girls into the same revenue streams that boys have been to date.
[Example: I have it on extremely good authority that in the forthcoming Duck Tales reboot, formerly minor mascot Webigail is going to be not only the primary protagonist, but a quintessential Mary Sue, besting the triplets at everything from sports to adventuring to aviation to gadgeteering to schoolwork.]

I always knew your face tattoos (on your face!) were an attempt to compensate for some shortcoming, but now I know specifically what that shortcoming is.

Yeah, a lack of patience for willfully blind dullards like you.

Do you guys really want it unlocked?

…we’ve had other threads locked due to people being knuckleheads but it doesn’t stop them from doing it anywhere else in the forum and it’s not like locking a thread really stops them.

So, you’re referring to yourself in the third-person-plural-pejorative now?
Cool shtick, bro.

I nearly tossed my cookies during Jaws. 😉

I did toss during AotC’s droid-swapping scene.

Not cookies, though.

Ok, I thought I was pretty knowledgeable, but are you referring to when C-3PO’s head gets swapped with a battle droid body?

Well if you don’t know I’m certainly not going to tell you…

I’ve Google’d it to no avail using the phrase you used to describe it. Help me Darth Id, you’re my only hope.

Fair enough, can you clue me in on the joke now so I may partake next time?
