When did The Empire Strikes Back become more highly regarded than Star Wars?
Time

I held jealously onto my primacy bias until just last year.  I watched the GOUTs in order, to see how they looked on my new-ish 37" LCD (terrible).

I realized that ESB was just way more entertaining from moment to moment than SW.  (Yes, and that ROTJ kinda sucks.)

SW is ultimately a series of ingenious set pieces.  (Droids; Jawas; Cantina; Compactor; Deactivation of Tractor Beam; Canon-cockpit Tie dogfight; etc.)  As exciting as each set piece is, it's all slightly jarring continuity-wise.

ESB, on the other hand, flows and sweeps with cohesive and compelling perfection.  The performances are genuine, the structure and pacing are quickquickquick but natural.  It's just irresistible and engrossing on a level that SW just had not reached.

I just think it requires appreciation from a more sophisticated perspective than the others, so people typically embrace it with age and wisdom.

Why we love the prequels @ SW.com
Time

Yes, they have to justify combining all six films in one package.

Because, really, they are a strange and unwieldy group of movies to stick together in one box set.  No matter how long the prequels have been around, the trilogies still just don't seem to have anything to do with each other.  The tone and level of sophistication are just so incongruous.

Airing this apologia is kind of necessary to create public perception that the movies are of like quality / aesthetically related.  Necessary, but not sufficient.

another faulty memory?
Time

I remember Luke screaming (a la Conan or something) upon catching his Lightsaber in the Sailbarge scene of ROTJ.

I even remember asking my dad, "Why did he scream when he caught the lightsaber?" and my dad surmising that it must have hurt catching it after R2 flung it through the air.

My theory is that I conflated--at the time, mind you--the catching shot and the shot where he winces in pain upon being blasted in the wrist a few minutes later.  My dad probably just gave me the benefit of the doubt that it happened, and cooked up a theory from there.

Free "farewell" Screening of 1977 Star Wars collector's print (British I.B. Technicolor)
Time

I started checking into the Star Wars blogosphere/commentariat again after the Blu-ray announcement, just to join the plaintive chorus.  I had no interest in SWBlu beyond jaded disgust.

But then I read about this screening, and...you know what?  I was suddenly excited about Star Wars again.

Sure I'm disappointed that I didn't get to attend, but nonetheless the whole little episode has ressurected my hope.

This makes me suspect that maybe Lucas' imposed, artificial scarcity program with respect to the OOT is simply the most brilliant, drawn-out meta-marketing campaign of all time.  Without the constant divisive drama of the SE/prequel/revisionism/backlash, Star Wars would have ceased to be in the least relevant long ago.  But Lucasfilm has instead managed to make it not only relevant, but controversial?  Who would have thought SW could ever qualify for that adjective?  Something that had been resigned to the bland-nostalgic bin of overexposed '80s juvenalia has become the Holy Grail of cinematic rarities!

Because of this treatment of the franchise, it would have been a treasured moment to see a screening of a 35-year-old film.  To own it in that condition would be priceless...

In any event, I expect a 40th anniversary original, theatrical SW blu-ray/digital-HD in 2017.  (You heard it first here!)  I only hope it looks as good as this technicolor print.

If you had your choice, would you have wanted George Lucas to stop after 1977?
Time

Not only is ESB a contender for greatest film of all time, ROTJ is not beyond redemption.  Gamorrean Guards alone make it worth it, and it's got some peerless action scenes: Rancor Pit battle; Sand Barge battle; Speederbike battle; Final Luke-Vader showdown.

I even love the Ewoks.  The only really offensive bits are the burp jokes and Death Star 2.

And The Last Crusade was pretty great too, so maybe Lucas should have quit after '89?

Save Star Wars Dot Com
Time

Hey Zombie:

I've lurked OT.com since, oh, before the GOUT was born, but have decided to finally register to give you praise for your new website.  It's fantastic.  Your lengthy editorials/essays are goldmines (and your article on the Senator screening in particular is stupendous).

The whole thing has inspired me to buy your book!

Keep up the fabulous work, and here's hoping it's as effective as this site has been.  (Because this one really has.)
