Original Trilogy set I made from Laser Disc to DVD (using the Faces LDs) (Released)
Time
And another thing. Anyone in my position will probably tell you the same thing; and that is sometimes you get people emailing you "I'm pretty desperate for DVD/DVD-R copies of the untainted, widescreen Star Wars trilogy..." or "Are you sure that will be enough?". You will probably get it too. Now, speaking my own mind: anyone who exploits other's compulsive instincts is pretty rotten. Now I don't make profit from distributing discs (which other people poured their souls into), at least I don't think I do. I think TR-47 does, but hey that's his choice, I don't really care. All the more power to him.

I think that you've been shown a bit too much contempt for your introduction spidy, and I'm sorry I couldn't have replied earlier. Obviously a lot of people here do not understand the time, effort and money that does go into these things. Anyhow, I'm not feeling so well, I hope some other people will come to their senses and at least try to see things from your side and understand your resentment.

He ask me how much the DVD set would cost I said $20.00 dollars. This is what he said. Right on.

I've never made a set nor do I feel the need to. Like
I said if you get your set out I will get a copy
either via a trade or for a few bucks a disc.

I feel that $20.00 dollars is not alot. For the people that do video editing of it is not a cheap hobby. My laserdisc player cost me $1000 my DVD recorder costs be $700. Plus I bought three Star Wars face cents trying to get the best copy I could. Trying to avoid laserdisc errors. Each of the Star Wars face sets cost me about $70 dollars.I do not like it when people try to get things for nothing and somebody else has to do all the hard work. It took me about nine hours to make this DVD set. This set is made for people that do not have laserdisc players were do not have the knowledge to make a DVD set themselves. The money that use goes back into video editing.
TR-47 was a lot like you not long ago (despite the fact he didn't author the set, AFAIK). But he calmed down, which was a good thing. I think you have to understand that you can't stake a claim on something you've bootlegged from someone else's intellectual copyright and then expect to dictate how it is used/distributed. There are a lot of people here who've contributed a lot of time and money. Rikter uploads them; that's pretty committed. LaserMan has helped a lot of bootleggers with their transfers.

I know, that speaking for myself I buy lots of blank media (at a good price) and so long as I make that money back I'm happy. And it doesn't take much to make that money back. Now you can't complain that your equipment cost so much. Are you telling me that you want other people to pay for YOUR LD's, YOUR LD player, and YOUR DVD recorder? Not to mention someone else's intellectual property.

Anyway, I'm sure you'll cool down soon enough. I would like to get hold of your set sometime, but I'm interested in a bit more info. Is the audio dolby 2.0 or PCM (uncompressed prologic matrixed surround)? Are there any pauses between the disc-changes (if there are, they can be fixed). Maybe you should try viewing some other transfers too.

They introduced that tax on certain CD-R's in Australia too - however that doesn't change the fact that it is still illegal to copy music, even if you own it, unless you have explicit permission from the copyright holder. In fact, AFAIK the ACCC was opposed to the tax, partly on the basis that it wrongfully implies that copying copyrighted material for back-up/archival purposes is legal. If I buy an MP3 player, and transfer some of my favourite tracks from original CD's in my collection to my MP3 player, I am breaking copyright law. If I intentionally press the record button on my VCR while a copyrighted TV show is airing, without permission from a copyright holder - I am breaking the law. Now I know in the US that has been tried and ruled as "acceptable use", however it's never been tried in Australia.

Dr Gonzo's version. You probably don't have anything to worry about, but it is still illegal - but then again I don't know Canadian law, you'd have to look it up yourself. I know it's illegal in Australia, NZ, the UK and the US - and *should* be illegal in all countries that uphold copyright laws, except if they explicitly give you a legal right to make back-up/archival copies. For instance, here in Australia I have a legal right to make a back-up of software, but not of movies or music. Taping a show off a TV without permission from the copyright holder is also illegal (but no one's ever been charged for it).

Fix up original Terminator effects?
Time
Change Terminator? Hell no! One of the errors in the movie (and I was the first in the entire world to notice it and post it on the net, I know because I searched extensively) is near the beginning when Reese asks the cop the date; who says "12th, May, Thursday". The movie is set in 1984. The 12th of May is a Saturday in 1984, it was a Thursday in 1983.

Yes, I know, I rock.

Or something like that.

Regardless, they didn't come out right, and the manufacturer had to replace them.
No, there were a handfull of scenes which were incorrectly framed. And Universal freely made an offer to replace the discs with incorrect framing, they didn't have to.

I've bought the french 1995 THX LDs off eBay in the past weeks. Two different releases exists: one with the french soundtrack, and a box set with the original english soundtrack and french subtitles. (I've bought both of them!)

I've bought a fairly decent player too (Pioneer CLD-D925), that I have just received this morning. So I checked the french subtilted english LDs... (drum roll) They have the english text crawl (and end credits), and the subtiltes are (always) in the bottom black bar!!! So there is an english PAL LD of the Star Wars Trilogy.
Impressive, most impressive. Are you going to attempt it yourself, or loan your LD's to someone with powers far greater than the average man?

I'll never forget a post on another message board not long after Red Dragon's release by a "fan" which went something like:

...I'm a huge Hannibal Lecture fan. The first 15 minutes was the best...

I'd seen Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal before I read the books. I'm not sure if I read Red Dragon first before I saw manhunter, but I know I read the books in order.

I've said it before. Red Dragon is a terrible excuse for a remake. Manhunter is excellent the way it is. It chose to follow the book's interest in Graham and not to follow Dollarhyde. The problem is, even if you remove all the crap from Red Dragon you will still be missing the character development and other important bits that were given to Lecter. They basically made a comedy of the movie. People only saw it to watch Hopkins as Lecter.

Idea: About De-SEizing the DVDs... We need to Vote on Changes!
Time
The soundtrack was still mixed from 100% original material. Take for instance The Terminator - as I just posted on how I HAD to get the R1 - the 5.1 was not made entirely from original sounds. Was it even the same soundtrack? Hell no. It was completely re-made from the bottom-up. That makes its soundtrack a complete... REMAKE. That makes the movie a remake.

I'm not too fussy when it comes to director's cuts. Though I still think the theatrical should also be preserved, so long as they've used original material I don't mind - in fact in a lot of instances I prefer. Manhunter is a good example. Unfortunately it's not available in its true theatrical version on DVD either (AFAIK).

It's all in the spirit of original material - to me. If I write a book, and I decide chapter 5 is not really needed and remove it, and release my book like that then that's the story. Later on I might say "well, the original chapter 5 was important to character development, I'd like to re-insert it". And in doing so I'd put a note at the beginning of the book and at the beginning of chapter 5 explaining this was not part of the book the first time it was published. And that would be okay, becaus people can still choose to read it how it originally was. However, if I was to instead write a NEW chapter 5, or re-write a lot of the other stuff in the book - then that's not okay. I'm making a new story to replace the old one.

I'd like to see the Indy trilogy preserved in its theatrical format. i bought the R1 copy of The Terminator because it has two things the R2/R4 doesn't: 1. the original mono audio track, 2. the original opening text (as opposed to converting it to player-invoked subtitles). Ergo it is the theatrical version, and the only theatrical version to be released anywhere in the world on DVD. I'd also like to see Close Encounters of the Third Kind in its theatrical version (which has NEVER been released on any home video format). I, of course, never saw it in theatres.

How many of them do you think will set their curtains for a ratio other than (or smaller than) 16x9? Hell, most of them probably have the curtains set at 4x3 just to save some hastle.

And it doesn't make much sense to preserve the video, just to slap subtitles on it - not to mention the fact that it can make them harder to read.
I said it would be nice to have both subtitle tracks, not that you have to force people into seeing the subtitles over the picture.
