Star Wars OT ANH - PAL Laserdisc transfer (Released)
Time
I was thinking for people with projection units, or those who simply prefer it on the picture. I don't know about you, but I would kind of prefer it if they were on the picture because then at least your eyes aren't taken so far away to read them.

Now if you'll excuse me, I still haven't got over the horror of facing 4 more years of STANHOPE. For those of you interested, you can see the results of the stupidity right here in my very own city here. The Greens and the ALP - what could possibly be worse? I don't know where you live skywalka, but this is obviously all your fault (welcome to the forums).

Oh, you can use the greedo scene from the SE for the parts with the subtitles. Just cut back to the original when they shoot. I wouldn't try and splice the audio at all, the PCM track is great as it is. You could always make two versions, one with both audios, one with just english. Anyhow, good luck. Oh, I also have a suggestion for you and all other bootleggers (Zion, MeBeJedi, this means YOU) - how about creating two seperate subtitle tracks, the default one will display the subtitles (for greedo/jabba) just below the picture, and the second one will display it on the picture.

Some criticism: Even on my very small 4:3 TV the picture quality has a slight jagged look of horizontal aliasing, and the frame rate doesn't seem very smooth. But I attribute that to the fact that my PAL TV and Playstation2 are broadcasting the picture in NTSC. There is probably a loss of quality when my PAL TV snaps into its secondary NTSC mode that it wasn't really designed for.
The aliasing you noticed is because the discs don't conform sttrictly to the DVD specification. I have the same problem if I'm using my DVD player in "PAL mode" (which means it uses PAL-60 instead of NTSC for NTSC movies, this makes the picture look better than using NTSC). AFAIK PS2's can only do the one format - ie PAL/PAL-60 but not NTSC. Which could be why you notice the aliasing. I noticed the same thing on a friend's brand new player, so I changed it from "PAL" to "AUTO" and again it was fixed.

mate, I think you have to use a better source than Gonzo's and vhs audio. You could lift the audio straight off TR-47's and use it (so long as you've synced it correctly). Perhapps Zion or MeBeJedi would help you out with the crawls and alien scenes. You'd also want to compare the raw capture to make sure that your PAL version isn't from an NTSC-to-PAL. Also, you could use special edition LaserDiscs:

Like use the german as the underlaying source and then any identical feame that's in the Special Edition can be used to replace the german ones. Still, it's a very good idea since NTSC sucks. By the way I wouldn't use the dual-audio tracks or make it anamorphic.

Oops, I meant Mike. I see Mike has a new FAQ. How nice. Still displays his total lack of knowledge for copyright law. You are not allowed to make personal "back-up" copies. There is no fair use exemption allowing personal back-ups in your precious DMCA. The exemptions are listed, and "fair use" is not among them. Gosh, you'd think Americans would know more about their own laws then the rest of us.

Blasphemy!

How dare you speak ill of CRT. No wonder you want to create a 16:9 version. Because of the limitations of fixed pixels and the inability to change resolution on LCD/Plasma screens, hey? My CRT computer monitor is feeling very sick after displaying that blasphemy, goaghhha CRT FOREVER!

Yep. Congress just passed new laws. You can't back up anything you own anymore, the way the new laws are worded, even though that is illegal according to other laws (I believe). It is one big snafu. The lobbyists finally got through to some people, and Sen. Orin Hatch had something happen to him, I forget what exactly, that caused him to switch his beliefs, and he was one of the people that got the darn thing pushed through.

It is illegal to back up CDs, DVDs, rip anything from a disc (even for your own private, personal use), etc.
Ah well at least I still have the legal right to back up software. No one can take that from me, except the Australian Government - and I doubt the ACCC would let them do that.

I agree with what you've said about moderation Jay, and that this is an excellent SW forum - possibly the best. New people have been welcomed, and not labelled newbs, etc. I'm glad you don't appoint additional moderators, in my experience that always leads to corruption. I know it might be necessary when a forum reaches a certain size, but it never works great.
