kk650's Star Wars Saga: Regraded and Semi-Specialized (Released)
Time

Alderaan94 said:

Hello guys¡ I recently watched ROTJ SemiEspecialized v2.15 and i noticed there are some “squares” around the ships in some space scenes that, for example, were not present when i saw Despecialized or the Special Edition. Do you know if it´s an error or is of the own film? and why is not in the other versions?

Those would be matte boxes.

Practically nobody is interested in a special special edition.

Based on Reddit, more people are interested in this than the OUT. Every time I see the subject of the different cuts come up anywhere other than here, someone inevitably says some variation of “the unaltered versions would be nice, but I’d rather they just get rid of the bad changes and update the CGI for the rest so that it will match the new movies”, and then everyone else upvotes it.

This is why I can’t stand the Star Wars reddit. It’s full of PT and SE worshippers who won’t stop posting about their tattoos and stick figure families. I see tons of people on there saying “most of the changes were great, just get rid of Greedo shooting and it will be perfect.”

I can understand their sentiment. After all, with Mike Verta’s project completed the original Star Wars has been well restored, and the original elements to the other two are in far better shape. The OOT will eventually be released, if not by Disney then by obsessive fans. If Disney wants to completely update the SE for a new generation, that would be par for the course with what we’ve gotten previously and continue the tradition of trying to keep these films relevant to the masses. It’s actually a fascinating experiment which has been going on since '77, and a part of me is saddened that Disney won’t continue that. I suspect that if there weren’t constant revisions, The OT would be increasingly be seen as a cultural artifact today, rather than a part of an ongoing story. The only reason I’m against the SE is that the OOT isn’t officially available.

Right, I agree. I think the SE has it’s place for people who like that sort of thing. I just get annoyed with users who call you a loser fanboy and downvote you into oblivion for liking the originals, because the Special Editions are OBVIOUSLY superior.

Celebration 2017 Speculation
Time

I don’t know if this han been discussed already, but I thought this was interesting. A host of the Star Wars Show, Anthony Carboni, said this on the latest episode:
"Any real juicy Star Wars related news for the next few weeks is probably being saved for the event itself, gigantic wink."
This leads me to believe that he might know what the “juicy news” is. If Lucasfilm/Disney are making a big suprise announcement about the theatrical trilogy, I doubt this guy would already know about it. Or maybe he does somehow, I don’t know. I’m just reading into things too much.

Very well done except for the fact that they teleport from Scarif to Tatooine.

good point! Ideally, Tatooine should be painted out of the shot of the escape pod. I think that would help maintain continuity.

I don’t see how that would help…they still land on Tatooine, don’t they?

Maybe they meant replace Scarif in the Rogue One shot using the matte painting of the escape pod shot? I think that would be better than making Tatooine disapear

Does anyone have scans of the 2006 Limited Edition Trilogy DVD covers?

You have to register there to be able to download the covers - though they are usually ‘decent to very high quality’ covers and have their own forums too.

Don’t you have to pay in order to download uncompressed covers on that site? It’s ridiculous.

I think they have a Gold Membership thing for $10 annually where you can download any of the full size artwork there as often as you want (think the $10 is to help cover costs of hosting all the stuff they have there). Though for regular members you can download them for free (just in a smaller resolution/size).

Those covers above are in 6406x4293 for Gold Members - so IF* you only get half of that size for regular free members they’re still good quality covers for a 5 minute signup and browse around (and you may like it and stick around etc).

(* - I don’t know if you actually do get half size resolution - or smaller or larger than half sizes for free members).

The FAQ on there probably has more info on it - http://www.freecovers.net/faq

Alright, thanks for the info.

I’ve had most (but not all!) of the old covers being posted here, sitting on a hard disk for years. Since the photobucket links will probably eventually die and leave these pages looking rather bare, I have uploaded about 4 GB (so far) to my site. Many of them are the same as posted above, but at a higher resolution.

I’m still generating the pages to host them so not all of them are accessible yet but they will be soon.

http://thestarwarstrilogy.com/starwars/page/The-Empire-Strikes-Back-Cover-Art-Archive

http://thestarwarstrilogy.com/starwars/page/Return-of-the-Jedi-Cover-Art-Archive

… more to come

Awesome, thanks. Any chance you could upload the archive in its entirety so I don’t have to download everything individually?

Are the Prequels Even Worth Watching Once?

I’ve only seen the prequels once each, and I wish I hadn’t. I wish I could erase my memory of those films because they ruin certain parts of Star Wars for me.

Why? The OT existed for a long time before the prequels ever came out. The films resonated with people and they filled in the blanks with their own ideas, whatever impression was left upon them.

Obi-Wan told us that Anakin was the best pilot in the galaxy, a cunning warrior, and a good friend. Especially considering the way the OT was told through Luke’s perspective and his relationship with his dad, I always envisioned Anakin as being a mature, father-like figure, and a powerful and trusted Jedi, just like Obi-Wan and Yoda had described. Do the prequels prevent anyone from continuing to view Anakin in that light? Not for me. I could care less. Anakin will always be exactly as he was implied in the OT, not more, and not less.

I just wish that those blanks were left as blanks. I envisioned Anakin like you described, and in my opinion, that description does not fit the prequel Anakin the slightest bit. The prequels didn’t match up with the ideas and interpretations I had in my head, and that was just disappointing. I guess I just need to replace the prequels with the ideas I had in my head beforehand.

I’ve only seen the prequels once each, and I wish I hadn’t. I wish I could erase my memory of those films because they ruin certain parts of Star Wars for me. Whenever I hear “Anakin Skywalker,” I don’t want to think about the annoying prequel Anakin, I want to think about the OT Anakin. I don’t plan on watching them ever again, and I can’t recommend anyone else watch them at all.

What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like?

NeverarGreat said:

I think that the Alderaan explosion was the one most in need of an update, but the one they gave it did little to make it better. If it was just the larger explosion it would have been fine, but they gave it the praxis shockwave, which just made it look dumb.

I think it would’ve been a better idea to only add the shockwave effect to the Death Star explosion, making it more epic compared to the Alderaan explosion. Save the gimmick for the grand finale.

I noticed that the matte painting and/or set seems to be altered even more. Here’s a comparison between Despecialized and Grindhouse (gamma boosted so you can see it better). Take a look at the support beams and walls on the sides. Also the lines surrounding the holes in the floor look brighter in Despecialized (not sure if that was changed or not).
