One thing is for sure, we all love Empire
To be honest, upon first viewing, 6.5/10
If not for the really really really good moments, some of the best in the saga, it would be an easy 3/10 - 5/10
Mark Hamill has been a seriously underrated actor for far too long. (Even though he’s probably the best incarnation of The Joker ever.) He played Mozart in Amadeus on Broadway, but likely wasn’t even considered for the film version because he’s forever identified with Luke in a way Harrison Ford doesn’t have to deal with having been both Han and Indy.
Mark just knocked it out of the park with this. I sincerely hope he gets an Oscar nomination. It would be a first for a Star Wars film?
I waited 34 years to see Luke back in action, and it was worth the wait.
No, Guiness got nominated for Obi-Wan in Star Wars for the 1978 Academy Awards.
I just joined too, and so far I’ve been very welcome. Here, from my understanding, you’re treated the way you treat people. Don’t be an asshole, or rude, or annoying to anyone and you’ll be fine.
I can’t wait for The Last Jedi: A Not-So-Gentle Restructure v1.0!
Oh boy this is more than necessary
I believe there is a shot in TLJ that looks a lot like one of the TFA:R shots ^_^ and I didn’t see anything contradicting it either.
Do you guys think anything I could do something about the first scene? I don’t think it bothers that many people so I think I’ll have to deal with it myself.
Yeah, I will watch it again tomorrow as well. Perhaps I will warm up to it too, but I will say, that despite it’s weak execution in the prequels, Lucas’ six episode saga had some underlying themes of hope and redemption that have gone by the wayside with this installment, like for example Luke who transcended his masters’ pessimism by believing in his overtly evil father’s capacity for good, now contemplating killing his nephew for having dark thoughts, and Leia ultimately giving up on her son at the end of this film. I know most people wanted to originality for TLJ, but this seems like throwing out the baby with the bath water.
If you think they abandoned the theme of hope in this… I don’t know what to tell you but… watch the film again, I think you’ll see it’s very much there.
I actually think they went a bit out of their way trying to force the hope theme on us…
I feel like I’m in the gray area. I didn’t love it, but I didn’t dislike it either (well, kind of). For now, I’ll be giving it a 6/10.
I didn’t like how Rey was basically RotJ Luke after absolutely no training, how she managed to connect to the force so quickly. I get it, she’s super powerful, but one must struggle. I thought she would fail, she’d be more challenged than she was in the movie and in the last one. When it came to her actions, took by her with “no influence”, she made a bad decision, but the consequence of that was -1 Sith Lord in the galaxy. So it worked.
Luke taught Rey philosophical lessons, like Yoda did to him, but he didn’t teach her anything on how to use the force, and yet she looks and moves like a Jedi master. I guess it’s because everyone felt overpowered in this movie, but Rey is like a sore thumb to me. Seriously, it was almost comical how powerful Snoke was, for example. The movie also felt rushed in a couple of places, which gave me a “they’re remaking the OT in 1,5 movies instead of 3” feeling. Ughhh.
Because of the jokes and the humor, the tone at times felt a bit all over the place. That terrible first scene with awful jokes followed by the sacrifice of Rose’s sister is an example of this.
I realize I’m nitpicking a lot, but even the whole plot of simply staying out of range and trying to escape the First Order felt stupid to me. It was like “TESB - Stupid Version”.
I hope I didn’t sound like an idiot with this, but something tells me I did.
That Yoda puppet seemed a little off to me. My biggest hope for this movie was to see force ghost Ob-Wan and Anakin. I am glad we got to see Yoda, but showing a scene with Luke and his father would have been superb.
I agree, but I knew they wouldn’t bring Hayden Christensen or Ewan McGregor to reprise their roles. About the Yoda puppet, I felt like it looked pretty bad at first, but after some 3-5 seconds I had no problem with it at all.
I went in expecting to like it the same as I like The Force Awakens but I was blown away. I honestly don’t have any problems with the film. I’m glad I feel that way and I can’t wait to see it again.
I am RIGHT with you and Cobb! This film blew me away. It had my legs shaking. Of course I have some issues. Too much comedy and Canto Bight could be cut down. You could also get rid of Leia’s superman moment. But besides that? Well what you have is a Star Wars masterpiece. Now begins my full review. Feel free to poke any holes through it if you disagree:
This film is so incredible in so many ways and I don’t know where to start so I will just start moving through some of the great things.
Firstly, Luke’s fate was one of the most beautiful and inspiring scenes in Star Wars history. This film instantly feels so much richer and more satisfying than both Force Awakens and Rogue One.
Rey and Kylo’s relationship was absolutely perfect. An amazing moral drama between the two that had my eyes glued to the screen. Luke and Yoda’s scene might be the most heartwarming scene in the whole film. Luke’s training is full of interesting moments (sometimes too much humor), and an amazing depiction of how the Force connects everything. When Rey feels things around her and we get her describing the beauty and chaos with the accompanied visuals, it was just visceral.
The multiple perspectives and descriptions of the Kylo/Luke flashback work perfectly. I felt so sorry for Luke and the guilt he felt. His dialogue about it being a “fleeting moment” and only then realizing his great mistake was just wonderful. I also actually started to see why Kylo would have that as the moment that sets him crazy and loose.
The relationship between Rey and Ben Solo was beautiful. Very saddening towards the end yet still emotionally rewarding. Their force bond was a genius and inventive idea from Rian Johnson. Their complex moral dilemma of Rey seeing the desire for good in Kylo makes sense and I totally felt it to be true. And Kylo’s use of Rey’s parentage against her and his persuasion was just great.
Luke at the end was a true Jedi. Using the force for the ultimate defense, using Ben Solo’s hate against him, saving his friends, and lighting hope for the galaxy. Then he finally finds his peace with a binary sunset. The same sunset he gazed upon when he once desired to be apart of something greater than himself.
“The Rebellion is reborn today…The War is not over…And I will NOT be the Last Jedi…”
Come at me folks. I LOVED this film.
That was actually a very nice and accurate description of the very high highs of the movie to me. Having in mind Luke’s character in TFA, what they did was masterful and very well executed. He walking all alone to face the huge and powerful First Order and WIN is quite possibly my favorite scene in movie history.
And I loved Luke+Kylo Ren’s story and their relationship, and deep down part of me wishes that THAT was Episode 7.
But the way the movie flows for a while didn’t really feel that much like Star Wars to me, and that alongside the cheesy jokes and other cheesy moments in general took me out of the movie several times.
I personally think the movie needs a second viewing, and that’s what it’s getting from me Sunday. First impressions was that it had so much potential, but the amount of awful jokes actually took me out of the movie, and some of the twists were very predictable. Leia’s non death was pretty bad. Finn should have woken up later into the film in my opinion, so that we had enough time with Leia & Poe and Luke & Rey.
Overall, first act was bad, the rest was medium with some very high highs. And the first act had highs as well, of course.
By the way, does anyone know if they used the same “Main Title” version for the opening crawl as they used in TFA?
I’m looking forward to seeing your edits, if you plan to make them available. The clip you posted is marvelous, congratulations.
I love this forum
Where are you guys seeing all these updates? I’m beginning to think I’m blind.
http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Return-of-the-Jedi-Remastered/id/48662 My personal go-to.
Seems like a pretty good edit if I were to choose one. Still not even certain on Ady’s at this stage though seeing it is going to be more of a fan edit than a fan fix like ANH:R and TESB:R were.
Sure ROTJ doesn’t measure up to the other two movies but I never really had any issues with it to the extent I’d rather watch a fan edit over the original theatrical.
.Val
Yeah, this fanedit that I linked is basically RotJ anti-cheese, and how much that improves the movie is almost ridiculous.
Are you going to keep the Stargate SC-1 explosion for Alderaan, or are you creating a new one?
I’m not Adywan but I think he will get a new one, since that one looks kind of dated and I believe it’s only available in SD.
Yeah, TFA messed up big time with some aspects of traveling for me, such as how the Starkiller Base was dealt with, and all the confusion of Han finding the Falcon and they had left the system already and wtf is going on, and then the end was a bit too nebulous and rushed so we could have Mark Hamill in the movie. Just a nitpick though. But yeah, you’re right, but I don’t know how you’d pull that one off… (just for the record, I love the idea of doing something like when Indy travels in his movies)
PS: do you think you’ll be reediting Rey vs Kylo in the forest? The way it was executed was a bit off for me, with Rey who was clearly being outmatched all of a sudden kick his ass.
http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Return-of-the-Jedi-Remastered/id/48662 My personal go-to.
It always seemed to me that the hyperspace routes were sort of roads and highways in the Star Wars Universe, and that going without the precise calculations to go to those specific coordinates, you could end up flying into a star or something (this would also explain why they didn’t leave Hoth on the other side of the planet, etc). I don’t think that they go out of light speed to “make turns” though, but implementing your idea without doing that would “pointless”.
However I think it’s still possible to travel outside of these routes, but it would be a lot more dangerous, etc.
I personally don’t see anything wrong with them way the Rancor scene goes, nor with the sail barge scene. And I really like how Luke is different from the conventional Jedi seen in the prequels and etc, because those Jedi failed where Luke didn’t, and because Luke received informal Jedi training and learned a lot by himself, so one could argue that he wouldn’t even know the “correct” way to behave like a JedI. (But I essentially disagree with the claim that Luke doesn’t behave like a Jedi)
Sorry for asking if it’s something that bothers you Ady, but who’s going to turn the lightsaber on first this time? Ben or Vader? Thank you. And do you think ANH:RHD is going to be more similar to ANH:R or ANH:R (PURIST)?
Yeah, but the audience only sees Luke force choking the guards, pulling the gun and mind tricking Bib Fortuna. Out of these, only the mind trick was really impressive (I guess not anymore since even Rey, a completely untrained Jedi as she is, pulled it off so easily). So, from my experience as a viewer, it was always building up to Luke just eventually going full Jedi, which is the sail barge scene. After all, it was the first time we saw a Jedi kicking everyone’s ass, and I feel like the subtle uses of the force that came before built up to that. Just my opinion though.
Hm I hadn’t thought of that, good point. And I like this crawl even though it still feels like it has too much information sometimes. But it’d be hard to make one that doesn’t since it’s set over 30 years after where we left off, and you have to set everything up. Great job Neverar.
Yeah, but I feel like it was all leading up to Luke just going full Jedi. I don’t know, the fact that he took care of the Rancor, the first real threat, without using the force, added to the sail barge scene.
