The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **

By the time I got to see the movie and find this thread, it was already 76 pages long. I slogged through the first 40 before I started seeing the same posters cycling through the arguments again and again.

I can’t contribute anything that hasn’t already been said over and over other than:

a) I’ve only seen the film once (lucky to at all with a newborn),
b) I came out of the theatre conflicted about whether I actually enjoyed it,
c) I’ve thought about the film everyday since I saw it, and finally
d) I like it less and less each and every day.

Perhaps subsequent viewings may soften my stance, but as for now:

a) I won’t pay to see it again theatrically, and
b) Barring a major course correction it will be the last Star Wars movie I see theatrically.

I don’t disagree the political arc chosen for TFA and TLJ is a “realistic” or even “probable” one, and that the Rebel Alliance couldn’t establish a utopian government post ROTJ. Despite feeling like a rehash, I was willing to buy into that “reality” with TFA.

The travesty here is the character arc chosen for Luke. Despite all pro-TLJ lobbying, I simply cannot believe that this hero would have responded the way he does in TLJ.

I don’t want my heroes to be “fallen”. Some may applaud a “James Bond” movie where the protagonist is portrayed as a recovering alcoholic and sexual predator as “realistic” or “honest”, but that’s not why I would choose to watch a Bond movie. And that’s why TLJ will be the last Star Wars film that I see in theatres, the same way I stopped going to see “dark and gritty” DCEU movies after “Man of Steel”.

To be honest, I would rather they never had made the ST and I wish that Mark Hamill would have had the option of reading a script before being contractually obligated to make this film.

This reminds me of when me and my dad went to see Skyfall. I remember him saying this after the movie was over: “it’s a very well put together movie, but that’s not my James Bond”. He also said James Bond wouldn’t have gotten his ass kicked, or wouldn’t be in such a bad shape. James Bond is that guy who kills everyone and completes the impossible mission and his suit is still clean and his hair still on point afterwards. So for him, it didn’t feel like James Bond, none of the Daniel Craig movies did.

I think this is what a lot of people feel towards TLJ, more specifically to Luke.

The Last Jedi : a Fan Edit <strong>Ideas</strong> thread

I like the idea of opening on the last scene of the TFA and connecting that with the opening of the Last Jedi. My idea would be to rescore the music of when she sees him and have her walk up to him, then pull out the lightsaber when she’s closer, she holds it out, Luke looks at her (using a shot from TFA), and then he just walks past her. With the right editing and musical rescoring, it could be very powerful.

Man I love this idea, specially because I wasn’t a fan of the lightsaber discarding scene.

Cross-posting this from the DVD cover section, hope that’s okay - only gonna bump your Episode I thread though, not the other two, so as not to clutter up the front page. (ugh, that was too much Reddit-speak in one paragraph, sorry about that…)

Okay, whipped these up real quick - mods of my prequel covers for HAL9000’s edits (running times based on v4.2). … I figure either of the regular TFA covers I made would work for Restructured unless someone wants one that actually says “Restructured” on the case somewhere, or wants the FE logos and stuff on the back.

Album here. (“theatrical logo” spines only; the “saga logo” spines are ready to go if anyone wants them, I just haven’t saved them as JPEGs yet)

I was actually going to say you should do this! Hahaha you’ve done an amazing job, really. Congratulations, these are awesome.

Even George Lucas admitted that becoming a parent changed the way he made movies. You’re no longer a rebel fighting the system, but a responsible adult and a role model for your kids. I do not doubt that Hamill’s view of Luke is filtered through this lens. Who wants to be a parent who even for a moment contemplates the murder of a relative? Anyone would rightfully be uncomfortable with such an idea, so sometimes it takes an outsider to admit unsavory elements of a character that have always been there.

Yeah but I personally don’t think some of the elements have always been there, like you’re saying.

I think you’re more right than I am. After all, he said he disagreed with Rian, not that he didn’t like his directions or script. I guess it’s a better way to view it than the way I was viewing it.

I’m still not the biggest fan of several aspects of Luke’s character in this movie though.

Hamill on twitter

I regret voicing my doubts & insecurities in public.Creative differences are a common element of any project but usually remain private. All I wanted was to make good movie. I got more than that- @rianjohnson made an all-time GREAT one! #HumbledHamill

Though of course he was forced by Disney to say this!

Hamill never really took back what he said about not liking what was written for his character. He said he regretted saying those things. He has always said that the movie is fantastic, he never said otherwise. What people are highlighting in videos, etc. is how he didn’t like the character of Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi, and I don’t think that’s something hard to believe. In fact that’s in several ways what I think. And he didn’t take that back here, he simply stated that he regrets voicing it in public.

The music is great, but I think that as soon as it starts to ramp up the intensity you should make it a little quieter because Yoda gets kind of hard to hear.

Yeah, I’ll probably try a different mix and post it sometime soon.

Alright, now for my biggest change (easily my most radical edit idea for any of these). As far as I know, I’ve never seen anyone do this (correct me if I’m wrong), but when I decided to make an edit, I came to realize this is something I’d have to do.

When I was a kid, the Order 66 sequence really worked for me. I don’t know why, probably because I was familiar with all the Jedi characters from the animated Clone Wars and a couple books I’d read (and from my own adventures with their action figures) and also probably because John Williams owns it (as usual). Problem is, you have to take the films on their own, and in that case, the music and the emotion of the whole montage is way out of whack with our investment in these non-characters. Plus, I feel like cutting around to random planets that we’ve never seen before is rather un-Star Wars. Basically, the sequence had to go.

So, without further rambling, here’s my rough radical edit of the Order 66 “montage” (not so much anymore) with a couple music changes thrown in:

pw: rots

Added bonus: the Jedi don’t all die in one day

I like it, but I have a soft spot for the march on the Jedi temple Song, so I’m not sure how I feel about that part. The rest was great, but the original music is still heard when we transition back to the Jedi temple and to Kashyyk, but I’m pretty sure you know it already and that it’ll be fixed. Great job! (love the color correction)

If Luke simply decided to go with Rey back to the Resistance instead of being Yoda 2.0, wouldn’t that itself make this movie already more different from the OT than what it desperately tried to be?
Like, honestly, it’s not even that hard, JJ gave it all to you, the setup, everything.

Edit: by the way, merry Christmas all 😃

Info Wanted: STAR WARS 8 to be released in 4K ULTRA HD???

My point is episode 2 and 3 were shot in 4K digital. So it was released in 4K in the theaters at the time. If the theater did not support 4K projection digital it was converted 35mm film. So yes we have 1080p now for home video, but they can release a 4K version.

No, episodes 2 and 3 were shot in 1080p digital.

What’s funny to me is people complained that TFA played it too safe, now this did the opposite of that and people are still complaining.

this is too real.

Since when is different automatically good?

Someone actually demonstrated as well how TLJ is still generally a repeat of a lot of parts TESB and some ROTJ, it’s just no where near as obvious and in your face as TFA was.

.Val

.Val mate, a point of view in the form of a video for your consideration in regard to TFA… (done before TLJ was filmed)

This is the most unbiased video I’ve seen on the matter.

Edit: This is his Rey/Mary Sue video.

Cool short video with new VFX clips of Obi-Wan / Vader fight in A New Hope

Blend seamlessly into the movie huh? That would actually be awesome, though I think it’s still pretty far from it based on the teaser.

Edit: if we get to the point where we can create CG scenes at our homes that look as real as actual film footage, I’m all in for a completely reimagined prequel trilogy.

I really liked the clip. I felt like the audio was a bit “abrupt” when Obi-Wan started talking, and it “breaks off” with the tradition of every SW movie end with a silent scene, but ultimately I’m ok with it. Great job.

I agree with the abruptness, but if people think that the dialogue ruins the scene I’ll remove it. Thanks for the support.

JEDIT: On second thought, I think that I’ll remove the dialogue.
I will need to implement a replacement for the Yoda scene somehow (telling Obi Wan that he will train Anakin), possibly in the council chambers right before we cut to the sunset scene, but I don’t know.

You must do what you think it’s right, of course.

Edit: what I mean is don’t go changing things because of feedback, I for example am really interested in your vision.

If these guys aren’t all being sucked out into space, then a similar emergency field around a small door isn’t a stretch.

Seriously people, we’re nitpicking movies where you can hear sounds in space.

They can have shields that allow for open air on the exterior of the Death Star. Its’ that way when the Falcon lands in the first movie too. But in general I agree with your point, the scientific stuff doesn’t need to be nitpicked as long as its not obvious and really dumb. For instance, the asteroids in the asteroid field would never be that close together in real life. And when the Millenium Falcon flips and spins like it does when it turns around on Bespin, all of the occupants would be thrown around and probably incapacitated if not killed.

Presumably the Falcon’s artificial gravity prevents this. Just like Luke and Han can sit in the gun turrets without seatbelts even though they are facing out the top and bottom of the ship.

Were they? I thought they were both facing forward, but one was at the top and the other at the bottom.
