Gorgeous examples! Can’t wait to see this when it’s finished! 😄

It’s because the Technicolor print that 4K77 was scanned from has a green cast, as do all the other Technicolor prints of Star Wars. Eastman prints don’t have it, but are significantly more prone to fading over time than the Technicolor prints are.
I’m wondering if it would be wise for other fan editors to report him for doing so somehow - as in, whether that would be a good “cover our ass” move, or if it would just put even more of a target on the community’s back…
VLC doesn’t play nice with 4K video apparently. A lot of us over at the 4K77 forums were surprised by that, too. Not sure if it’s a resolution issue, a bitrate issue, or a codec (h.265 instead of h.264) issue, or some combination of the above.
Wait - did they keep the original 1977 subtitles for the Greedo scene, but make new subtitles that didn’t match the originals for the Jabba scene?! That’s kind of hilarious.
That sounds like a good compromise indeed.
You’ll need to reencode the video to add them, which will lose a bit of quality. If you’re gonna do that, you should look into what other settings you’ll need for Blu-Ray compatibility (maximum bitrates, etc).
I’m partial to burned in subs, but that’s mainly because my media player doesn’t recognize default or forced sub flags and I hate having to manually turn them on every time. Plus it would match my Despecialized SW and ROTJ, my HDTV AOTC preservation, and the official TFA and RO releases. But that’s my personal preference - if you’d rather do graphical PGS subs that are a close match to the theatrical, that’s your choice. I also don’t think you’d be able to do the dissolves that way as they exist in the theatrical version, but I could be mistaken.
But this is also coming from a US citizen, so I understand the desire for more universal compatibility with multiple languages. I guess I’m just partial to the idea of preserving the English theatrical version exactly as it was.
I don’t think you need to worry too much about matching the kerning and such precisely with the sources we have. Get it close, and when Poita’s 35mm scan is completed, we will have a very good reference to use for a v2 upgrade.
Will your final output be 24.000fps or 23.976fps?
And will you be restoring theatrical subtitles baked into the video like Despecialized, or will you keep the HDTV subs or use soft/hardware subs?
yes, only the mkv is available, and i don’t think it’s blu-ray compatible.
Correct. It doesn’t have letterboxing baked in, so the picture dimensions aren’t a standard 1280x720, which is required for a 720p BD.
If you’re just trying to burn the MKV to a disc, it won’t work.
Download tsmuxer, open the MKV with it, set your output to Blu-Ray ISO, let it run (this will create a new 50GB file, FYI, so make sure you have the hard drive space), then burn the ISO output file to a BD using a program like imgburn.
oh wow i need to rewatch interstellar now. i thought it was mostly cgi! granted, i didn’t pay much attention to it at the time because… well it’s not something i used to notice, that’s all. but holy moly, nolan might just be my favorite director.
I think he even used real time on-set projection out of the spacecraft windows in lieu of green screen.
On a more serious note, am I the only one who noticed that they used the theme from Rebel Assault in TLJ? It wasn’t re-orchestrated, it even had the tinny 1990’s-2000’s CD-ROM sound a little bit. I mean, it’s a good game with a stellar synth score, but come on!
What part of the movie is this?
My understanding is that it’s an upscale of the SSE crawl. Willarob gave me some pointers on restoring the 81 crawl when he gave me the raw scan of it, here’s a copy/paste (hopefully I’m not out of line sharing this here, if so I’ll delete it):
A good way to restore the stars (at least during the crawl):
- Add the movie to your composition in After Effects
- Use the Lumetri Scopes or Levels/histogram to adjust the contrast so that the black of space is almost black and the white of the flashes during the flyover is almost white.
- Duplicate the layer and then hide the bottom layer for now.
- On the top layer, use the Keylight Effect to key out the yellow of the crawl and uncheck “Premultiply Result”. The yellow text should vanish completely.
- Also on the top layer, use the Threshold Effect and move the slider to the left until the stars reach your desired brightness.
- Unhide the bottom layer - you should have nice bright stars and be able to see the crawl again.
This works for the pan down too, but once the planets come into view you would have to start masking/rotoscoping out the planets, ships and laser bolts as they will all be an ugly blown out white color if you don’t…
I assume this is the method used for the crawl in 4K77 as well, but I’m not sure. I haven’t had a chance to work with the 81 crawl yet, so I dunno how this works in practice.
I forgot what thread I was in and my sleep deprived brain thought you were talking about tentatively toxic soap…
Several editors have proven that the Yoda/Sidious duel is easily cut, too.
Yes to both of the above. Please start a thread for it, I’m eager to watch your progress! 😄
Are those my [ripoffs of phildesfr’s] covers for HAL’s PT? 😄 Glad to see they’re being used by someone!
Anthony Bourdain. Apparently hanged himself in his hotel room while on location for his show.
This one hit hard for me. He was a big inspiration, and I hoped to one day visit a tiny fraction of the places he’s been and made so inviting for his viewers.
😦
JEDIT to add one of my favorite quotes of his:
Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.
And this is why I don’t use Plex or Kodi or any of that other crap. Everything goes on a physical HDD that sits inside my KDLinks media player, all organized by folder exactly the way I want it to be without having to deal with making the file names “scrapeable” or whatever by some database, and all disconnected from my network so I’m not screwed if my cat yanks on my router cables like she likes to do.
Sorry to hear that, Collipso.
Awesome news! Hope things continue to go well!
My point stands.
Dom is mostly right though, I can’t argue there.
Wow, I must be the only person around here who likes it. Was even one of my first Blu-Ray purchases. And 100% Jar Jar free! Not even Episode III can make that claim. 😉
Jar Jar Free doesn’t mean good by default - hell, one of my favorite TCW stories is the Jar Jar and Mace Windu team-up in season 6. And I say that with zero trace of irony. I thoroughly enjoy everything about that two-parter.
The movie? Well, the Ahsoka introduction part in the first 25 minutes is okay. Everything after that is atrocious. Whoever thought it was a good idea to make a story about rescuing a baby Hutt, then thought it was a better idea to make it Jabba’s son, then thought it was an even better idea to create Ziro, who might be a worse character than Jar Jar…
I don’t want to meet that person because I wouldn’t be able to restrain myself and probably wouldn’t handle prison well.
