Return of the Jedi 1997 Special Edition HD Reconstruction (Released)

the film is color timed to the 2004 versions (minus the botched lightsabers, those shots are replaced by the Blu-Ray).

Does this mean that the color is HDTV matched to the Blu-Ray in those shots or that they just use the Blu-Ray? IIRC, the HDTV version uses the 1997 recomposites, just with messed up color. The Blu-Ray uses new digital cores.

Yeah, it would definitely be more accurate to fix the color on the 2004 HDTV lightsaber shots than to use the Blu-Ray. However…were the lightsabers in Jedi actually ever recomposited before the cores were replaced in 2011? I seem to remember that only being the case for a few shots in ANH, with ESB and ROTJ’s lightsaber composites being untouched in 1997…

The Force Awakens: Starlight (V1.1 Released!)

I’ve been thinking about moving Snoke’s ‘Awakening’ dialogue (thanks RL!) and I have an idea for it that may greatly improve more than just the logic of that theme. Not to be cryptic about the idea, but I think it will be better just to show you. Unfortunately implementation will take a bit of work so I’m just going to let this idea sit here for now like a JJ mystery box. 😃

As promised, the idea:

Password: fanedit

I may have to go back into the Restructured workfile to rework the music, since the timing could be better.

As for the ‘training’ line, I don’t miss it, especially since TLJ all but discarded that plot point.

I like this a lot!

Best viewing order to introduce Star Wars to children?
Time

Release order. Easy question. First time viewers for any series/franchise should almost always use release order.

Weirdly, The Clone Wars (Filoni) I think benefits from watching its episodes in chronological order, making it a rare exception. But I also would stick to just the movies for a first time viewer experience and let them check out the supplemental material later if they’re interested.

STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **
Time

It’d also be nice for the writing on the screen to be rewritten with the “actual” Aurebesh alphabet (which was used for the tractor beam text in the 2004 SE of ANH). As it is now, it’s just gibberish.

But yeah, replacing the naked hand with a glove is a good call.

Converting PAL DVD 25 FPS to NTSC 23.976 FPS
Time

Easiest way I can think of is to rip the disc to an MKV file, then load that into mkvtoolnix and change the framerate in that to 23.976 and render out a new video-only MKV - this will only really work for the video, but it’ll actually change the frame rate the video file is played at, as opposed to Handbrake, which will try to interpolate (blend existing/create new) frames to preserve the speed and runtime of the original. Plus, mkvtoolnix won’t reencode the video, just change the frame rate flags.

Whether that will easily sync to the NTSC 4.1 once you have the file running at the right speed is a different story.

I think eac3to should be able to take the audio from your PAL video and convert it to NTSC speed (lowering the pitch to its correct…uh, pitch in the process), but I don’t know the command offhand for that and also don’t know if that’s available for Mac.

Hairy_hen has a version of his 5.1 audio track that includes this music. In fact, it was mistakenly included as the only 5.1 track on the initial 4K83 releases (don’t know if it’s still the muxed-in track on recent iterations, but the “purist mix” was readily made available by him as well).

STAR WARS: REBELS (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread

This is, I believe, the first time post-release tinkering has happened at Lucasfilm since the purchase. Up until now there’s been no “versions” of anything.

The series premiere movie of Rebels had a scene between Vader and the Grand Inquisitor added to it when it re-ran on ABC, and that version is the one on the S1 Blu-Ray/DVD set. I think the standalone Spark of Rebellion DVD release is the original version, but I don’t recall if that got a Blu-Ray release, too.

Also this hadn’t dawned on me before until recently. THIS is the scene of Luke confronting Vader that Yoda said needed to happen. As a kid I assumed Yoda meant another lightsaber battle needed to take place. Luke did too I guess. But without this conversation, the throne room scene could’ve been quite different. …right?

Oh wow, that’s a great observation! Never considered that before.

The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)

I find myself genuinely surprised at how well changing Vader’s line to Luke in ROTJ to, “Your mother once thought as you do” works. This is due largely to the audio work Sir Ridley and others have brought to bear. I’m not 100% sure, but I imagine it would be worth making at least an alternate audio track for a ROTJ project.

Here’s how the best version so far, from Sir Ridley, sounds when fully baked in. I included a few lines from Vader before and afterward. What do you all think about potentially going this route? Content-wise, it seems to be a meaningful alteration, given that this is a fan project which does not threaten the availability of the OOT. Padme beckons Anakin in ROTS, now Luke echoes this.

I love the idea, and the timing of the line is perfect now, but the Vader-y processing/EQ still needs work to be seamless, I think.

Send Schorman a private message.

Last update was given a few weeks ago, and you know that a scanning process is a long way… People involved in this project are informed.

Anyway, nobody is dead and everything is going well 😃

I was more talking about an HD “Despecialized” type of release, which always seems to fizzle out without materializing no matter who’s doing it.

To be honest, it’s been so long since an actual update on your 4K scan that I forgot anyone was currently working on one for TPM. Last update as I recall was back in June, when you said you were still waiting to get it scanned properly due to a faulty sensor or something on the 4K scanner, yes? Or did I miss something?
