Best movies of 05
Time
Just drove an hour to see "Good Night, And Good Luck" last night - amazing. Definitely tops my list this year, with "Crash" coming in second. Those are, however, the *best* movies, not necessarily my *favorite* movies (yes, there's a big difference) - my favorites would have to be "Serenity" at the top, "Batman Begins," "Land of the Dead" ... not necessarily great films, but the ones I'd watch the most. Now for "Syriana" and "King Kong" sometime this week ...

LOST
Time
"I hope Lost isn't going the way of the X-Files by becoming bogged down with unanswered plot lines."

But, X-Files' biggest problem was that it tried to have a semi-serialized story arc sprinkled in the middle of episodes that had nothing to do with each other - if you watch all the Mythology episodes in order without the monster-of-the-week episodes, any problems the show had virtually disappear until you get to the Super Soldiers.

Lost, on the other hand, is completely serialized, and its major issue is that if it tries to mix things up (i.e. the raft, the tail-section survivors), it has to keep going with it, and in such a "transitional period" like the first part of this season has been, its bound to be not-as-good as the past season(s) have been.

The new BSG is a prime example - after the shocking end of season 1, it couldn't be expected that season 2 would be the same - so the first 7 episodes were "transitional" and regarded by many as not up to S1's standards.

I vote to keep them.

Removing them would be the same as fixing lightsaber rotoscoping, or jump cuts, or fixing the black R2 in space, or anything like that - they're there because that was the state of FX technology at the time. If you're for preservation, then why wouldn't you want to preserve them? Preservationists are for no alterations because they want the film to look like it was made in 1977. Why? Because IT WAS. They didn't have the technology to remove/not have garbage mattes in the first place, at that time, so removing them would be undermining the whole concept of preservation.

If you can't see that, Rob, then there's nothing more I can say. I find the horrid saber effects much more distracting, but I'm not clamoring for them to be fixed because that's not preserving the film the way it was made in 1977.

Request: Traffik R2-R1 Convert - anyone willing to do this?
Time

The R1 version of the British miniseries “Traffik” has all audio dubbed in English, while the R2 version is in all the original languages with English subtitles. I’ve never seen this miniseries, and I’d love to, but I don’t want an overdubbed version, and I don’t have a region-free DVD player, nor is my player hackable - I’ve looked everywhere. So I was wondering if someone has/has done/could do a R2-R1 conversion of this and post it on, say, MySpleen or something of the like?

***The Official NON-Star Wars FAN EDIT*** Release Thread
Time
About the EVIL DEAD aspect ratio descrepancies:

Of the 3, the only one that was INTENDED to be shown in fullscreen is the first one. The other two were shot soft-matte, as many 1.85:1 movies are. That means that all information is recorded, but the director/D.P. shoots for 1.85:1. Often they'll tape cardboard over the parts of the screen that will be cut later, so they can concentrate on the intended frame rather than the extraneous parts. Soft-matte filming is done because that way any fullscreen release won't lose information. However, that's when you get errors like boom mikes falling into frame and such. Nowadays most movies are shot hard-matte (which cuts off the top and bottom of the frame as it is being recorded, so that part of the frame never touches film), because home-video widescreen is more acceptable nowadays.

But anyway, I'd love to see this edit - it sounds awesome. And I'll definitely be checking out that R3 disc ... very intriguing ...

Also, Rikter - I looked at the first post and was very interested in these edits - I hope you'll post them on MySpleen soon, but no rush - you've already done so much for us, how can anyone ask any more of you?

Serenity
Time
First, I absolutely loved the movie - near-perfect continuation of Firefly. Not without its depressing moments, but then again, I hate it when everyone comes out just fine on the end after huge conflicts like that, so it made it all the more real for me.

However, did anyone else hate the fact that the first 7 or 8 minutes of Simon rescuing River blatantly contradicted of "Serenity" (pilot ep of Firefly, not the movie) and "Ariel"?

In the pilot "Serenity" it was said that he spent his fortune making the contacts to get her out, and when they got her out they gave her to Simon in a stasis-cryo-whatever box so he could smuggle her back home. He never knew what it was that they did to her in the series and didn't find out until "Ariel."

But according to the movie Serenity, the contacts got him in, he was told exactly what they did to her by the guy that was doing it to her, and he got her out with help from the contacts.

It might be hard to do because the scene sets up the whole falling-on-your-sword thing and the Operative's character, but would anyone perhaps be willing to do an edit of the film to keep it in line with the series? It's not an end-of-the-world contradiction, but I'd still prefer it wasn't one at all.

Idea: an actual 12-hour Star Wars movie... on HD-DVD

Big difference. He gave us the original on DVD as well. That's what we want Lucas to do - I don't care if he makes Leia into a manwhore in his next iteration, as long as he's willing to release the original version onto the current format as well. Unfortunately, he won't do so.

Seconded, as an HBO miniseries.

Actually, it's be nice if it was more of an actual miniSERIES, with seven seasons (one for each book) with a few episodes each, like 3 or 4 for Gunslinger, 5 or 6 for Drawing, 7 or 8 for Waste Lands, 9 for Wizard and Glass, 10 for Wolves, 6 or 7 for Susannah, and 9 or 10 for Tower (based on the lengths of the books).

I'd also like to see Chuck Palahniuk's SURVIVOR as a movie with Kevin Spacey as Tender Branson and Jason Lee as the agent.
