You guys apparently don't really understand the work that has gone, and still has to go, into this project. It's too bad you're too damn impatient to let these guys do what they've been doing. They don't *have* to get it done when you *want* them to get it done, and if you donated money, that's something you should have realized before you donated, and no, they don't "owe" the people who donated anything. Does the Red Cross owe you something if you donate money to them? No, and neither do the X0 guys. I know, the two aren't the same thing, but the word "donating" does have a certain connotation to it, don't you think?

In other words, lay off, they don't have to be doing this, and they're not doing this "just for you."

--edit: I started posting this before your post, dark_jedi - it was directed toward ronlaw and fffff more than anything.

.AVI to DVD
Time
If you downloaded the AVIs, they're probably ~700MB DivX or Xvid files, correct? If so they'll probably look like crap burned to DVD on any TV.

But if you want to convert them, there are several programs - I used DVD Santa on Windows cause it was easy, and I was able to find it free (there's a trial version, but you don't want that). There are others around, but I can't vouch for anything else 'cause I didn't use any of them.

Poke around VideoHelp.com - a lot of useful information there.

Ripping DVDs on a Mac
Time
I just tried out Bits On Wheels and it works fine for me.

The only problem is I got quite spoiled on Windows and was used to being able to select the files I wanted to download, which would make getting the mono Rubber Soul a lot easier as the only place I can find it right now is buried in a huge torrent of all Dr. Ebbetts' Beatles releases (at least it claims to be such - it really isn't). I'd rather not download 8 gb of crap for the 300-500 mb I'll need.

I now have Toast 8.0.1, MacTheRipper 2.66, and MPEG Streamclip now as well. Thanks for your suggestions - it all works great. I'll have to get SheerVideo later at some point (at least the Intel version is cheaper than the UB version) - I'm getting FCS some time this week, much much cheaper than retail at my college's Apple store ($395 I believe).

Ripping DVDs on a Mac

Fantastic - thanks for the information!

A few other things, though:

What's new in MacTheRipper 3 that's not in 2.66 that would merit me looking for it instead of just getting 2.66?

Also, is there a BitLord-esque BitTorrent app for Mac? I've tried several that haven't worked, such as Azureus - it won't work due to ports being closed or something, an issue I had on Windows as well, and I still can't figure out how to fix it, but BitLord always worked fine without me having to fiddle with any such thing. My only other request for a torrent client is the ability to selectively download, but I can live without that if I find a client that just works.

Thanks again, and I'll look further myself.

Ripping DVDs on a Mac
Time
I just recently got a MacBook Pro with money I received for graduation. The main reason I bought it was for video editing (which is what I'm going to college for). Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a decent way to rip a DVD on a Mac. What I'd like is a DVD-Shrink-like program to rip the VIDEO_TS folder onto the hard drive, and then something to convert the VIDEO_TS files to HuffYUV AVI files for editing in Final Cut. I don't yet have Final Cut Studio 2, which I'll be getting shortly, so if that has something of the sort with it, I'll just wait for that.

I'd also like to find a Nero-equivalent for burning .FLAC audio files and VIDEO_TS folders to DVDs, if anyone knows of anything. I figured it'd be faster and I'd get more reliable suggestions here than if I tried to search Google for hours and hours, weeding through a bunch of shit that doesn't work or works poorly.

Thanks.

The Sopranos Thread
Time
It doesn't end. Life goes on as usual - just because we can't watch it anymore doesn't mean it's over. All the major story arcs have been resolved, and so what if it's not a neat and tidy ending? Life doesn't have neat and tidy endings, and since when has The Sopranos?

I thought it was quite good and fitting. That is, after letting it soak in for 24 hours. At the time I was royally pissed.

If you're talking about experimenting in the way I assume you are, I've already tried LSD, and decided I'm largely done with that sort of thing (not because it was a negative experience by any means - it was overwhelmingly positive, and it made me aware of a lot about myself I didn't know before - one such thing being that I don't find it necessary to fill your body with chemicals in order to feel good. You should feel good already.)

But I doubt that'll stick. And I'm going to a liberal arts college where several of my "experimental" friends are going as well, so if I choose to return to those ways, I'll have little trouble even if I am in the Midwest.

Hi Definition adopters food for thought
Time
To clarify, I'm not siding with Darth Solo - I think the idea of "ultra HD" replacing - or even being considered to replace - 1080 HD in home theater setups is ridiculous, but I thought it would be interesting to show the vast difference in detail.

Given that more and more movies each year are shot in 1080p24 (Superman Returns, Sin City, Revenge of the Sith ... ), they wouldn't benefit from any higher resolution than 1080 anyway - what you see on your HDTV is the best it'll get. 1080 is a very high resolution, and perfect for home theater viewing - and I think 4K would be great for digital theater. UHDV is almost too much - people that have seen it in action have suffered motion sickness due to the extremely realistic level of detail.

In other words ...

With the rate technology is currently advancing i ask if its really worth being at the cutting edge of technology at this given time?

Yes. It is.

I don't think that's an actual frame from the film, so it may not be the best comparison.

For this, I started with differently-shaded gray boxes, each at their correct ratio (720x480, 1920x1080, 4096x2160, and 7680x4320), then cropped them for 2.35:1, keeping the original width. Each was layered on top of the other, then the whole thing resized to 1080HD size. Then I brought in the Blade Runner film frame, which was in HD 1080, so the largest one, here representing UHDV, is really HD 1080, and the others are scaled to represent what each would be in comparison to UHDV. Unfortunately, I had to resize it for Photobucket after that, but the idea is brought across IMO.

I had 2K on there too, but it was so close to 1080 HD you couldn't see any of it, so I cut it out.

I think this gives a better representation of what Darth Solo's talking about, since it's an actual film frame, not a promo image (although, again, I could be wrong about that).

Notebook or desktop ... ?
Time
I'm graduating from high school in a month. For fall semester, I've been accepted to Columbia College Chicago with a major in Film & Video, concentration on Film Editing.

With my graduation money, I'm going to buy a computer for school. A Mac is my only choice, to run Avid Xpress Pro with the possibility of also running Final Cut Studio, among other uses. So here's my question: A Mac Pro desktop, or a MacBook Pro laptop?

Here's the hardware configurations I've narrowed it down to:

MacBook Pro
17-inch widescreen display (1680 x 1050)
2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
3GB RAM
200GB hard drive
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 (256MB)
8x "SuperDrive" dual-layer DVD burner
Three USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 400 port, one FireWire 800 port, one ExpressCard/34 slot
Total: $3,255 (with student discount)

Mac Pro
23-inch widescreen HD display (1920 x 1200)
Two 3.0 GHz Intel Xeon "Woodcrest" dual-core processors
4GB RAM
750GB hard drive
ATI Radeon X1900 XT (512MB)
Two 16x "SuperDrive" dual-layer DVD burners
Five USB 2.0 ports, two USB 1.1 ports on keyboard, two FireWire 800 ports, two FireWire 400 ports
Total: $5,148 (with discount)

I am on the fence as to which I should chose. I'm looking for any and all suggestions, advice, etc. ... anybody have any ideas?

You might run into legal trouble with that, as Waters is preparing a Broadway production of it if memory serves. Last year I was actually kicking that around, and I realized that if you're going for a linear story in it, it can be done a la Tommy, but it works best if you insert "Have A Cigar" (from "Wish You Were Here") after "Goodbye Blue Sky" to show Pink's rising to rock-star status, slipping in visual references to his getting married within those two songs before you get to "Empty Spaces" (or "What Shall We Do Now?") and "Young Lust."

I was just joking - Marquette made it when they did their production a few years back and we stole it.

I've never been to into musicals as I can't dance and I can't sing like one would need to in a musical, but I've always wanted to - and I'm sure I could - do The Who's Tommy. I've tried to convince my school to do it to no avail, and one of our community theatres did it when I was too young to know I was interested in The Who or theatre, but still recently enough that they don't want to do it again.

But I love straight plays - I was Paravicini in The Mousetrap my sophomore year, Charlie in Amateurs my junior year (my favorite part to play ever), Aide Warren in Dunes Summer Theatre's production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (the only person under maybe 20-25 in the play and I played an adult), and Peter in Footlight community theatre's production of The Diary of Anne Frank the next year (playing someone two years younger than I), with the lady that played Nurse Ratched in Cuckoo's Nest and the director of Cuckoo's Nest (who happen to be married) as my mother and father, which was fun, even if the play was very wrenching to do, especially 3 weeks in a row.

And not to get this thread even more off track than I already have, but does anyone know anything about Fuddy Meers? I wanted to audition for it but unfortunately missed the date, but I was told by my friends that I would have easily made it in.

That looks just like the plant we used in our production of Little Shop two years ago ... you didn't happen to go to Marquette High School, did you? Cause we stole ours from them ...

The Now-Released Spider-Man 3 Thread

I was disappointed in the campiness of "evil" Peter, as well - it reminded me too much of Superman III. Then Venom, who is my absolute favorite Spidey villain ...

--SPOILERS--

... gets 2 scenes, 50% of each with Topher Grace's face plastered over the REAL one, and then he BLOWS UP. I was furious.

Other than that, fairly good - Harry's arc was fantastic.

But it really should have been Harry, Venom and The Lizard, if they needed a third villain at all, but I think Harry and Venom with a SUBSTANTIALLY larger role should have been it.

DVD Shrink Error
Time
This is the third topic I've posted in this section in a week, and this is the first week I've ever even gone into this section ... wow ...

Well, anyway, I'm trying to rip my DVDs of TAKEN onto my computer to attempt a ridiculously complicated edit that will probably never get done. But the problem is, although Disc 1, 2, 4, and 5 all ripped fine, disc 3 keeps giving me this error when it gets to 50% on the initial analysis:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.

Failed to read file "E:\"

Data error (cyclic reduncancy check).

That's if I try to do a full disc backup. If I use the Re-Author feature, I get this error when I try to put Title 1 in there:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.

Failed to read file "E:\"

Copy Protection Error - The read failed because the sector is encrypted.

Burning with NERO is disabled, analysis is not running in low-priority mode, all previews are disabled, and "enable overlapped I/O" is enabled (I tried changing that the first time it didn't work, and it didn't make a difference, so I left it).

Any help with this?

Limewire Help
Time
I use BitLord, and I only download torrents that are in lossless .FLAC, .APE, or .WV format (i would include .WMA lossless, but I dont trust those cause .WMA could also be lossy and they claim it's not). Then I burn them to a CD for a hard-copy, and I rip them to my computer as 320 kb mp3.

NOW - I know you're probably thinking why I'd do that, but this is a shared computer and I don't want to eat up the hard drive, which is why I burn the lossless CD's. I'm getting a MacBook Pro this summer, and then I'll rip everything onto that in ALAC (Apple lossless) for myself.

By the way, anyone know where I can find the Dr. Ebbetts Beatles UK Singles and UK EP collections in lossless? I found the singles in OGG Vorbis, but not lossless ...

Oh, right - yeah, I don't know about your Limewire issue. Sorry.
