Star Wars: The Trilogy **PROJECT STALLED DUE TO HARD DRIVE FAILURE**
Time

Perhaps, but I'm quite satisfied with the way I've done it using the DVD-9.  I feel I've adhered pretty closely to the feel of the original cut, while not compromising the grand scale Adywan has added to it.

By the way, the new TIE reveal is still there, it's just not as long, and doesn't pan around after they fly past the camera.

It will be freely available through usenet in the usual group from Tuesday 19th July 2009

Sunday (today) is the 19th - Tuesday is the 21st.  I take it the Tuesday is right, but the 19th is not?

I'm far more excited for this project than someone who generally pretends the prequels never happened should be ...

Star Wars: The Trilogy **PROJECT STALLED DUE TO HARD DRIVE FAILURE**
Time

Alright, I've finished my first pass through the film.  There are still chunks missing, and I still have to watch the Battle of Yavin in its entirety to make sure it still flows properly - there's a lot different about it in Revisited and the SE, and while I wanted to keep the more epic feel that Adywan gave to it, I felt that the middle section, with the new TIE reveal, dragged a bit.  So I cut it together using a combination of Revisted and the AVCHD to more or less match the original edit of the battle.

However, due to the addition of a lot of lasers and such for Revisited, the battle switches back and forth between using the mono mix and Revisited's audio quite a bit.  I don't think it's noticeable, but like I said, I haven't watched it again.

There's also the opening crawl and end credits that still need to be (re)done, and there are a lot of holes throughout that need to be replaced with DJ's GOUT when it comes in the mail (and I need to redo the opening Tantive IV battle with the AVCHD so the lasers don't bounce back and forth between the original and Revisited).

But I can see this being finished by August.  Don't hold me to that, as I've also got to do the DVD menus and such, but it looks like that might be feasible.

I'll post a Battle of Yavin clip soon.

Just got DJ's GOUT in the mail - looks like I'm in the home stretch for Star Wars now!

I thought that was just for pre-screenings, and all the final release prints were the split-in-half version?  If that's the case, it doesn't really matter that much and the one-piece-fall version is just a curiosity, since many movies are tweaked here and there between pre-screenings and general release.

At least, that's the way I look at it.

And Ady, glad to know you got the link - hope it helps out.

Grazi!

--edit--

Okay, while I stated earlier that I wanted to base this edit around the mono mix and that I'd keep it 100% exactly the same so that people could switch it out with any other mix they liked ... well, this isn't possible.  There are too many small changes here and there.

For example, the removal of the added Biggs scene necessitated removing several seconds from the mono mix - while I could have used GOUT video to replace the missing footage, I tested out a version where I just cut out the chunks that aren't present in the SE, and it works just fine.  I'm sure most people won't even notice anything's missing - but at least two seconds are.

There are other small cuts here and there done by necessity (my slowing-down of scenes only missing a few frames only works if there is very little movement in the shot - I'm going to go back and see if the ones I left in earlier still look okay to me), so my version will be mono mix only.

I'll consider doing a stereo version, but it'll be the 1977 theatrical stereo, not the 1985 or 1993 (with the necessary changes to match the video).  I likely won't do this, as I prefer the mono mix over all the others, but if there's demand for a stereo audio track on the DVD, then I'll consider it.

Fantastic - I guess that should be added to my list of sources then.  Off to download ...

Hm, I can't seem to find it at the usual places.  Anyone know where to find the Purist Edition of Revisited?  Or could someone (Ripplin, perhaps?) upload at least the audio of the duel from the Purist DVD (NTSC)?

I just got to the Ben/Vader duel.  Man, Ady really cut this scene up - that's not a bad thing, I actually really like his edit.  In fact, does anyone here know for sure whether the "Purist" Version of ANH:R uses the same cut of the duel that the DVD-9 Revisited does, or does it revert to the original cut?  If so, I'll probably just downmix the "Purist" Version's audio to mono (to remove the prequel music from the DVD-9), try to get it to gel with the rest of the mono mix, and use the DVD-9 video, keeping his edit of the duel (minus the ending where Ben is killed, which has already been reverted to the original cut).  Watching the original now ... well, frankly, it's kinda boring, though I really hate to say that.

One thing I've already changed (well, changed back, rather) is the way Ben and Vader meet - Vader's lightsaber is already on, as in the original cut (accomplished by using the AVCHD), and Ben lights his lightsaber after seeing Vader (currently using the AVCHD as well, but I might try to use Revisited here to keep that awful jump cut out).  I never liked Ady's change of having Ben light his 'saber as soon as he sees an apparently-unarmed Vader - and I love the idea that Vader knew Ben was coming and was ready for him, lightsaber and all.

I'm kind of on the fence about whether to use the 1977 "dead end" scene with Han, or the 1997 "hangar full of stormtroopers" scene, which, thanks to Ady, does look a lot better now ... I'll probably end up using the "dead end" as soon as Dark_Jedi's GOUT comes in the mail (right now the quality drop is just too noticeable).

Japanese Special Collection Star Wars Trilogy "Take 2" (* unfinished project *)

That looks pretty impressive so far.  At first I was wondering why the frame was moving around so much, then I realized that's what happens when you stabilize film judder.  It looks like you've done a pretty damn good job on that, too.

There's still quite a bit of dot crawl (look at the Lucasfilm logo and the opening crawl especially - I know you said you weren't happy with them, I just calls 'em like I sees 'em) and the edge enhancement is pretty intense and distracting, but I think (I could be mistaken) that the EE is present on the LD master for the JSC, which means there probably isn't a hell of a lot you can do about it.

Colors look much better than the first sample, and I'm happy to see that the weird green splotch everything seemed to have in the initial capture is gone.  Video noise is greatly improved, though there's still some.

All in all, great work so far - I can't wait to see where this goes from here!

--edit--

Also, if you look in your Version 0.00 screens, specifically at the one of Ben reaching in his box o' goodies for Anakin's lightsaber, you can see that the red in the window bleeds out into the lighter-colored wall.  I wonder if there's a way to minimize that?

Blu Ray movies NOT worth buying

FanFiltration said:

I have an enormous problem with not returning over-due movies, and in the past have racked up late fee totals that rival the national debt. I also suspect, that I am banned from borrowing from public libraries in at least seven communities across the United States. *wink*

It's been real hard, but I'm holding off on the new "Godfather" set. Surprisingly, I have seen enough negitive comments about the restoration and transfer to make me actualy give in and consider first renting the films. For some of the high priced titles, I can see a sort of logic in first renting the Blu ray version, and then comparing them to my standard DVDs at home.

I know exactly how you feel with the overdue thing - I just returned Red Mars (book) to the library here ... 2 and a half, maybe 3 weeks late.  And I'd already renewed it once.  Whoops.

And don't listen to the negative comments about the Godfather set - it looks absolutely stunning.  You've never seen the films look that good.  The only negative comments I've heard about them are either A) the colors, which is B.S., in my opinion - the earlier DVD set is the one that has fucked-up colors, but everyone seems used to them for some reason; or B) too much grain, which is also B.S., because the Godfather films are supposed to be grainy - that's part of the look and feel of the films.

If you're even a slight fan of the Godfather films, buy the Blu-Ray set.  You will not regret it.

Here are comparisons between the Blu-Ray, and the Region 1 and Region 2 old DVDs - you can see just how fucked up the original DVD colors were in these comparisons:
