Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)
Time

The LFE (subwoofer) channel from Hairy_Hen's 5.1 upmixes use the LFE from the '97 LD 5.1 and the '04 DVD 5.1, depending on which sounded better for each scene, adjusted for volume to pack a little extra punch I believe. You'd have to ask Hairy_Hen directly, though.

I think it'd be an interesting experiment, but I'm not sure what you'd do about things like Mos Eisley or Lapti Nek. Splice in an upmix, I suppose ...

Doctor Who
Time

If you're really wanting to get into Doctor Who, I'd recommend watching the "new" Series 1 (with Christopher Eccleston), then Series 2-4 (with Tennant), then the 4 Specials ("The Next Doctor"-"The End of Time," with Tennant), and finally Series 5 (with Matt Smith.) Then think about checking out some classic Who, which is, IMO, more difficult to get into.

If you don't want to dive in headfirst like that, here are the episodes I'd recommend you check out to see if it's your cup of tea (all from the 2005-present revival) - the bolded episodes are the particularly good ones:

Series 1
Rose
The End of the World
The Unquiet Dead
Dalek
Father's Day
*The Empty Child
/ The Doctor Dances (two-parter, my personal favorite episode)
Bad Wolf / The Parting of the Ways (two-parter, season finale)

Series 2
The Christmas Invasion (David Tennant's first episode; I'd also recommend watching the 7-minute Children in Need special before this)
New Earth
Tooth and Claw
*The Girl in the Fireplace
Rise of the Cybermen
/ The Age of Steel (two-parter)
The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit (two-parter)
Army of Ghosts / Doomsday (two-parter, season finale)

Series 3
Smith and Jones
Gridlock
Human Nature
/ The Family of Blood (two-parter)
*Blink
Utopia
/ The Sound of Drums / Last of the Time Lords (three-parter, season finale)

Series 4
Partners in Crime
Planet of the Ood
The Sontaran Stratagem
/ The Poison Sky (two-parter)
*Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead (two-parter)
*Midnight
Turn Left
/ The Stolen Earth / Journey's End (three-parter; parts 2 and 3 are crossover episodes with Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures; season finale)

Specials
The Next Doctor
The Waters of Mars
The End of Time
(two-parter, Tennant's last episode)

Series 5
*The Eleventh Hour
(Matt Smith's first episode)
The Beast Below
The Time of Angels
/ Flesh and Stone (two-parter)
*Amy's Choice
The Hungry Earth
/ Cold Blood (two-parter)
Vincent and the Doctor
The Pandorica Opens
/ The Big Bang (two-parter, season finale)

* = episodes that have, in my experience, "hooked" people on the show

Dark_Jedi & ABC's - ESB: IMPERIAL EDITION - ART OF SCORING, Restored Recordings against the B&W GOUT - JW & LSO (Released)
Time

I feel like bringing the dialogue or whatever back in during the silent passages defeats the purpose of having an isolated score.

Having English subtitles (as an option?) wouldn't be a bad idea - I usually turn them on when I listen to isolated scores anyway.

Video Games - a general discussion thread

Cool thing about New Vegas - it's being made by much of the team that made Fallout & Fallout 2 (who were not involved with 3), but with Bethesda's Fallout 3 engine. I'm quite looking forward to it.

Oh, and for anyone who's interested in Fallout 3 on PC - I've heard it crashes waaay too often. Just a heads-up. (I haven't tried it, personally - I have the GOTY Edition for PS3.)

The Prequel Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

Bingowings said:

Your Star Wars videos are a treasure trove of ingenious ideas.

I can't imagine what dreadful personal situation you are going through to drive you to take the videos down from Youtube but I hope you reconsider or archive them anonymously elsewhere.

At least stick them on a data disc and send them to someone like doubleofive so the wishlist has some examples of what you were trying to do.

Those videos must have taken ages to do and have lots of really clever decisions in them.

They are far too important to vanish.

I couldn't think of anything to add - Bingowings said everything I wanted to say.

I think there'd be a lot of interest in you creating an isolated score track, ABC. Your restorations of the soundtracks are unparalleled.

I'd say, if you're interested in creating isolated score tracks from your restored versions, start a new thread for it. I'm sure many (including myself) would be quite interested!

And the eventual goal would be a single, 2-hour-plus track (not several individual tracks), synchronized to the GOUT, that can be muxed to the video by whoever wishes to use it. Just be aware that there will (obviously) be several minutes of silence in the track, wherever there isn't any music playing in the film.

I'd sync to the 1980 theatrical stereo for purist's sake, but I don't see how there would be any issues whatsoever with using the 1985 or 1993 stereo remixes.

It might also be interesting to have two separate isolated scores - one with the music exactly as it is in the film, one with any and all unused tracks where they would have been in the movie (an "as originally intended by John Williams" isolated score, as it were).

Wait, wait - what are we talking about here, making an isolated score (MUSIC ONLY) track, or using ABC's audiophile soundtrack to make the music more prominent in the mix?

The use of the words "attenuate" and "overlay" are what's confusing me, I think.

If you're talking about an isolated score, then hell yeah, go for it, that'd be awesome!

If you're talking about making the music more prominent in the mix ... why?

The shotgun shells were loaded with rock salt. As in, the salt you pour on your driveway to melt ice. Not buckshot. (Michael Madsen's character mentions this at one point. And yes, it is possible to do this - I've heard of farmers who use this method to "deter" trespassers without killing them.)

It won't kill you, but it'll burn like a motherfucker. Like how pouring salt on a wound hurts? Well, in this case, the salt MAKES the wound, then sits inside it.

LOST: CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER (My First Post) (Released)
Time

I dunno how you'd get rid of the credits. I've watched a bit of "The Lost Chronology," and liked it quite a bit, but every once in a while a scene would pop up that had "Directed by ___" or "Naveen Andrews" or another credit over top it. Since these are also present on the DVDs, I don't know how it can be avoided without some severe cropping, or some miracle clone-stamping.
