Ah, my Mr. Show David Cross WTF gif.
Your gif? I think not!
I think this image accurately depicts how I feel about this thread now:
Oh yeah, forgot about that one. Added it to my list.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_earth#Middle-earth_works_by_Tolkien
I think if the 1997/2004 Jabba were replaced with the TPM Jabba, and the "stepping on the tail" thing could be somehow removed, I wouldn't mind the scene ... with one caveat.
The Greedo scene should also be reworked to more closely follow the shooting script. This honestly wouldn't be that hard.
Dialogue as is now:
Greedo: Going somewhere, Solo?
Han: Yes, Greedo, as a matter of fact, I was just going to see your boss. Tell Jabba that I've got his money.
Greedo: It's too late. You should have paid him when you had the chance. Jabba's put a price on your head so large, every bounty hunter in the galaxy will be looking for you. I'm lucky I found you first.
Han: Yeah, but this time, I've got the money.
Greedo: If you give it to me, I might forget I found you.
Han: I don't have it with me. Tell Jabba--
Greedo: Jabba's through with you. He has no time for smugglers who drop their shipments at the first sign of an Imperial cruiser.
Han: Even I get boarded sometimes. You think I had a choice?
Greedo: You can tell that to Jabba. He may only take your ship.
Han: Over my dead body.
Greedo: That's the idea. I've been looking forward to this for a long time ...
Han: Yes, I'll bet you have.
[BLAM!]
Now, my proposal for the revised dialogue (this only requires removing some of Han's dialogue and changing Greedo's subtitles), mostly taken from the revised fourth draft of the script:
Greedo: Going somewhere, Solo?
Han: Yes, Greedo, as a matter of fact, I was just going to see your boss. Tell Jabba that I've got his money.
Greedo: That's what you said yesterday. I'm not going back to Jabba with another one of your stories.
Han: Yeah, but this time, I've got the money.
Greedo: Then I'll take it now.
Han: I don't have it with me. Tell Jabba--
Greedo: It's too late for that. Jabba would rather have your ship.
Han: Over my dead body.
Greedo: That's the idea. I've been looking forward to this for a long time ...
Han: Yes, I'll bet you have.
[BLAM!]
That mostly solves the redundancy issue between the Greedo scene and the Jabba scene.
Maybe I'm missing something, but what's the benefit to a 704x480 DVD vs a 720x480 DVD? It has less resolution, so why is that good?
ANH:
- The new canyon matte and the darkening of the scene
- New sandcrawler shot
- 2004 binary sunset fix
- Mos Eisley matte
- 1997 landspeeder approach
- Wolfman replacements in the cantina
- New Falcon departure from Mos Eisley
- 2004 static when Luke taps his stormtrooper helmet
- 2004 cell block perspective fix
- Improved Death Star chasm echo
- "Close the blast doors!" (admittedly not really a change)
- 2004 tractor beam lettering replacement
- 2004 rotoscoping of Vader's saber while the blast door closes
- Actually seeing the Falcon landing on Yavin IV
- The Biggs scene
- New X-wing takeoff
- Some CG in the Battle of Yavin (but not all of it)
ESB:
- Added shot of Slave I following the Falcon
- Some (but not all) of the expanded Cloud City exteriors (I don't like the new interior windows)
- Restored music cue when Slave I takes off
- Adding the second hatch door to the Falcon
- 2004 fix to backwards Imperial rank insignias
ROTJ:
- Sail barge shadow fixes
- Ropes around Han's feet while he's trying to save Lando
- Removal of Anakin's eyebrows
- Luke congratulating Wedge at the end
And yeah, that's about it. I guess I like a lot more of the changes in ANH than I thought I did.
Oh, and while I agree with the idea of replacing the Emperor's hologram in ESB, the execution was atrocious.
Dude, you're on the wrong forum. Just wait until Skyjedi shows up ...

OCP may have contributed a few things, but honestly, none of them that good by any means (SW Classic was atrocious, though I will admit his SW documentary, that I currently forget the name of, was pretty cool though). His obvious true talent was in selling the works of others. His "The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled" edit was awesome, but I haven't seen any of his other stuff.
Agreed. That was the one thing of value OCP contributed, and it wasn't even Star Wars related!
Although I did like Deleted Magic in concept, it's a bit of a chore to sit through. Don't get me started on the atrocious "Classic Editions."
I see your "Luke & Leia" and raise you "The Dark Side Beckons" (begins when Luke is hiding from Vader toward the end). Phenomenal.
I'd say ROTJ is a veeery close second to ESB for the best score of the originals. That's one area in which it certainly isn't lacking.
Haha, well that's all part of the experience, in my opinion. The cropping isn't, so to me, it's the only major issue.
Ah, yes - the Puggo edition is pretty sweet. Its only major flaw is the severe cropping inherent in the 16mm print, but it's worth it for the experience.
OCP broke forum rule #2:
2. No profiting from any activities related to fan edits or preservation efforts. Those found selling their fan edits or preservation projects here or elsewhere will be banned.
Your point about him being a "major contributor" is moot. If Adywan started selling copies of "Revisited" for $30 a pop, and the mods found out about it, he'd be banned too, no questions asked.
Upon joining this forum, you agree to the rules, and if you do not abide by them, you're no longer welcome here. It's as simple as that.
I think it'd be easier to remove the "Fit him with a restraining bolt" line than to try to put one on him.
I suppose I should talk about ROTJ now.
Well, I was born in '89, so I never saw the original originals in theaters. I first saw the trilogy in '93 or '94, and wore out my VHS tapes long before the SE came out in '97.
But I watched ROTJ all the time as a kid. My favorite film was always ESB, but every scene with Luke, Vader, and the Emperor in ROTJ was pure gold to me as a kid. That's what I loved about Jedi.
Even as a 5-year-old, I would fast-forward through Jabba's palace and Endor, with the exceptions of the speeder bike chase and the sail barge fight. The space battle didn't even interest me that much. But the climactic lightsaber duel was my favorite moment of all 3 films.
It took me until a couple of years after the SE came out (possibly after TPM, maybe before) to really realize how inferior ROTJ was to the rest of the trilogy. Another Death Star? How lazy. Vader does basically nothing in the first 3/4 of the movie? Lame. The Ewoks? Don't get me started on the teddy bears that defeat "an entire legion" of the Emperor's "best troops."
And the number one, biggest thing that has always bothered me - from the first time I saw it until today - is the revelation that Leia is Luke's sister. It just smacks of "We have to top 'I am your father' somehow!" It just felt ... wrong. It didn't belong. And it still doesn't.
The other problem I have with it (and this might actually be bigger than the Leia-is-Luke's-sister thing) is that you never feel like the main characters are in any real danger.
You got that in SW, with the Death Star coming so close to destroying the rebel base, and Vader having a clear shot at Luke until Han finally sees the error of his ways and comes back to help.
You sure as hell got that in Empire, with Han captured and Luke physically and emotionally broken.
But in ROTJ, you never feel the danger. There was a great opportunity to feel this for Leia in the speeder chase, but then two seconds later - oh, she's fine, and hey, she's found a nice teddy bear friend!
The closest ROTJ comes to giving you a sense that a main character is in serious danger is when the Emperor is zapping Luke with his lightning. And it's all too short.
You never get the feeling that the rebels might lose. You never get the feeling that Lando could die destroying the Death Star. You never get the feeling that Han and Leia could be killed destroying the shield generator.
That's ROTJ's biggest problem. It's too safe.
Star Wars = 9/10
The Empire Strikes Back = 10/10
Return of the Jedi = 7/10
The Phantom Menace = 5/10
Attack of the Clones = 2/10
Revenge of the Sith = 3/10

Too bad Smith lost all credibility when he sold out and made More Jay and Silent Bob and a second Clerks. Things he said he wouldn't do.
Sorry if someone's already said this in this thread (I stopped reading at this post).
But it wasn't "selling out." Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was made pretty much as an incentive for Jason Mewes to get off drugs. It didn't work, and Smith cut contact with Jason, telling him that if he ever really got his shit together and could prove he was honestly 100% clean, he'd make one more Jay and Silent Bob movie for him.
Jason eventually did get clean, and Smith made Clerks II as a reward for him.
(All of this is chronicled in a VERY long series of blog posts by Smith that tell the whole story of his rocky friendship with Jason. I'd post the link if I still had it.)
I don't see either of those as selling out, myself. I don't particularly like JaSBSB, but I quite enjoyed Clerks II (nowhere near as good as the first, though).
If you want to talk about Kevin Smith selling out, Cop Out is the best example.
I agree with you about the colors in 35mm vs. DVD/Blu-Ray - I got to see the Final Cut at the Music Box in Chicago, and it was bloody amazing. I didn't even realize that the colors had been so dramatically altered. (Unfortunately, I didn't get to experience it with the greatest sound - I'm not even sure if it was in stereo ... )
Then I bought the 5-disc Blu-Ray, and was thoroughly disappointed at the change. But as I said, it's only one of 3 rather little things that bug me about the Final Cut. Overall, it's my preferred version to watch.
Maybe one of these days I'll make my own, 100% perfect-to-me version. But that would involve me learning a LOT more about color correction than I currently do.
Yes, it's the same delay for the mono and stereo versions.
Yeah, everything you mentioned is fixed in the "Final Cut."
In fact, I only have three gripes about the "Final Cut" - if these were fixed, it'd be a 100% perfect film:
1. The unicorn scene needs to go. I hate it.
2. I don't like the new color timing
3. "I want more life, fucker" should be restored, instead of "father." It always sent chills up my spine ...
I once had a Toshiba that I was able to "hack" into a region-free player, and it played PAL R2 discs as well.
But for the most part, PAL material on NTSC players generally doesn't work.
Yep indeed - the only issue you'd have is if they were region 1 encoded. I'd assume that the final releases will be NTSC, but region free.
It doesn't work as well the other way around (most region 1 DVD players can't do PAL), but from what I understand playing region-free NTSC material in PAL players is rarely an issue.
Not sure where to put this, so Moth3r, if you think it belongs somewhere else, go ahead and move it.
Just saw this today, and I thought you guys would appreciate it. This dude’s been making custom replica lightsabers, and he has a blog/website/whatever that chronicles his process. It’s very interesting, especially his ANH Luke lightsaber, which he went all-out on - it includes a blue glowing crystal and other stuff on the inside, for Christ’s sake! He got Mark Hamill to sign it at Celebration V, too (Mark apparently remarked at how much better his replica was compared to the original prop, which was awkward and had shards of metal that would cut his hands).
Here’s the site:
But sunglasses aren't attached to a helmet. Luke's visor is. When he turns his head, his helmet's gonna move, and thus the visor is going to move with the helmet.
And it looks like it's riding high in the second picture to me, by the way.
