4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

It’s confirmed that it’s the Reliance scan, with the master prepared back in 2012 under Lucas’ supervision. They gave it a new HDR grade this year by the same guy who graded The Mandalorian, but otherwise it’s the same thing they’ve had ready to go for 7 years (4K scan from the 1997 negative with 2004/2011 changes recreated in 4K, plus Lucas’ final 2012 tweak to the Greedo scene).

Very interesting! Charles Bunnag, one of the colorists of the new 4K HDR Disney+ version of the Original Trilogy, as well as “The Mandalorian,” has spoken regarding the negative claims that the Disney+ HDR is “fake.” There’s even an interesting comment from Marc Wielage (colorist of the 2004 versions). https://mixinglight.com/color-tutorial/is-the-disney-series-the-mandalorian-fake-hdr/

The podcast in the link there is very interesting, I recommend everyone who’s interested in HDR give it a listen.

• Crop the show to 16:9

Ew, why?

Relax, I’d release an uncropped version if I ever when further than this idea. It’s just personal preference. 16:9 just feels more “tv” to me.

It just feels like an odd idea when the rest of your post talks about making it more like TCW, which is in 2.39:1 as well.

Blu Ray player can't read 4K77 and 4K83
Time

If you’re using the 4K files, that’s probably your problem. Resolution aside, the 4K versions are encoded in h265, which standard Blu-Ray players generally don’t support. You’ll want to grab the 1080p versions instead.

Alternatively, try plugging your flash drive directly into the USB slot on your TV and see if it works. That’s how I watch them.

What I don’t understand is that if the original 1997 Special Edition prints were given a new remaster, then how come the sound mixes still sound so compressed as in the 2004/2011 releases? It’s incredibly noticeable for A New Hope.

Also bear in mind that this remaster was made back in 2012. It was only given a fresh coat of paint (read: new HDR color grade) this year prior to release.

I might be late to the party on this, but I looked into the 4K versions of the Original Trilogy on Disney+, and correct me if I’m wrong, but here’s what I think they did here. They took the original Special Edition prints from 1997, remastered them in 4K, and recreated the 2004/2011 changes, as well as the notorious “Maclunkey” addition. The recreated changes look very good, especially removing Anakin’s eyebrows in Return of the Jedi. This new version also looks very good and not as dark and saturated as the DVDs and Blu-rays, but I’m still not a fan of 4K remasters of older films adding teal filters to them.

Yeah, that’s exactly what happened, minus the “teal filter” thing which is absolutely not the case here.

The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)
Time

Watching ROTJ right now. The “your mother” line - the cadence is perfect, but the processing still needs work. It doesn’t blend super well with the rest of Vader’s line. I’m not great with audio work like this, but I think it sounds too deep and “full,” maybe? Almost like it needs to be recorded to an analog source (like a cassette) and then transferred back from that. Or maybe just for some of the bass to be pulled out of it. Not sure.

I’m seeing TROS with my girlfriend and brothers early (7:20 AM) on Saturday

Haha, alright I’m not going to post anything in this thread between Thursday and Saturday morning then!

But I’d be careful about getting spoilers from newbies that might comment here. At least until you can see it on Saturday.

Pretty sure forum rules prohibit spoiler talk outside of marked threads for a certain length of time.

I think it would be wise to avoid posting spoilers in this thread until Nev has seen it and changes the thread title to explicitly warn of TROS spoilers.

I know nobody seemingly talks about this, but there are some scenes that are slowed down (pacing-wise) by lines that tell the viewer how they should react when they already know how they’re supposed to react in said scenes, notably the opening scene where Billie Lourd says “oh no” when a First Order fleet arrives above the atmosphere of the Resistance’s planet.

You really don’t like that line, do you?

Of course I don’t. It slows down the pacing of the movie, and it is also pointless given that we already know that it is an “oh no.”

And let me guess, you’ve read my comments on Poppasketti and Hal 9000’s respective edits? ',:I

I don’t see how a 2 second reaction from a character slows down the pacing in any measurable way.

Plus, as I said above, seeing a character react to something isn’t telling the audience how to react, nor is it pointless.

Her emotions were conveyed visually on-screen, so there was no need to have her say “Oh no.”

This seems like a bizarre thing to fixate on to me.

I don’t understand this. Watching a character react to something isn’t telling us how to react.

Then we have to GET people to care. I’m never giving up.

Me being in my 20’s, I’ve encouraged my friends who like SW to check out the Original cuts. They are aware of there being different versions, but don’t necessarily care what version they are watching. I’ve show some of them comparisons and they are like “oh, ok, cool” and good on about their day. This is a world we are in today where the Original cuts don’t matter to most anymore. However, they did say they will check it out if it came to a new formate, either Bul-ray or streaming.

But with each passing year it gets wiped from anyone really caring.

I’m a bit older than you, but this has been my experience as well.

Hasn’t stopped me from forcibly giving my friends and family copies of Despecialized, though!
