What do you think of the Anderson/Herbert prequels?

Well, what did you think of the Star Wars prequels?

Honestly, I think it's a pretty good analogy, especially if you pretend that post-1983 Lucas is a cash-whore relative of pre-1983 Lucas, since that's all Brian Herbert is - a cash-whore relative of Frank that doesn't care about pissing all over his father's legacy with books that get worse and worse (and started out pretty terrible to begin with).  The less said about Anderson, the better.

Though I have not read his/Anderson's two-part sequel to Chapterhouse, but I've not heard anything good about it...

Well, I am currently reading the sci-fi LOTR equivelent known as Dune.  It will take me ages to get through this considering how busy I am lately, but so far it is quite fascinating.  Definitely a different type of science fiction, but I really enjoy it.  It took me a long time to get around to picking this up because I once saw the 1984 film (I was quite young at the time, making me appreciate it even less I'm sure) and realized how awful it was.  I couldn't imagine any story that film was based on being so amazing.  Now I am happy to prove myself wrong.

Ah, Dune!  Definitely one of my favorite novels of all time.  It also saddens me that it hasn't been adapted very well yet (Lynch's movie looked great, but fucked up the story, while the SciFi miniseries got the story mostly right, but looked like shit and had pretty terrible acting, even from good actors), especially since, when I read it, I can see an amazing 4-hour epic movie in there.  Like Lawrence of Arabia for science fiction.

As far as the sequels go, I'd recommend Dune Messiah and, to a lesser extent, Children of Dune.  But anything beyond that I could never get into.

Yeah, the first 4 episodes are pretty standalone (though they do introduce Ein and Faye), but you really get a glimpse of Spike's backstory and the loose arc for the rest of the series in episode 5.

Alternatively, you could check out the Cowboy Bebop movie.  It's set after episode 22 (or thereabouts), but it's a standalone - not referenced in the series at all, and it was produced afterwards.  Basically, it's outside the continuity of the series.

But it's just as good as the series.  So if you don't like the movie, I seriously doubt you'll enjoy the rest of the show.

Info Wanted: Is Netflix streaming a legitimate source for preservations?

I believe it used to be possible before they changed the method of encryption, or something like that.  All information I've found on how to do it is outdated and no longer applies.

I have no idea, though.  I'm a video editor, I don't know shit about programming or bypassing encryption or any of that crap.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

MUCH better than I expected!  My Apes universe has shrunk from the first 4 movies (only that large because I always liked Conquest) to 2 - the original and this.

My only complaint is that I wanted to see the apes really take over, not just escape and fuck some shit up on the way out.

But the way Caesar got the other apes to join him was very, very well done.  It didn't feel forced or rushed at all, and beyond that, it really illustrated how intelligent Caesar is.

8 damn dirty apes out of 10.

Captain America: The First Avenger

Also better than I expected, but this one did feel rushed, particularly the middle section.  I hope that any post-Avengers sequels are set in the time period between Cap forming his team and ... SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER ... Bucky's death (which also came far too quickly). SPOILERS OVER.

But Evans surprised me quite a bit with his performance.  I expected almost nothing from him after Fantastic 4.  And the effects work on shrinking him pre-serum was nothing short of stunning.

CP3S, I'd stick with Bebop until at least episode 5 ("Ballad of Fallen Angels"), as bkev said.

And I love FMA: Brotherhood, but I definitely see what you mean about the obnoxiousness.  The first Fullmetal Alchemist series has less of this, but the story's all fucked cos they caught up to the manga and decided to branch off into their own story about halfway through, whereas Brotherhood follows the manga the entire way, quite faithfully.

And I have to say, those are the only two (three? if you count the two FMAs separately) anime series that I can stand to watch.  So I'd recommend sticking with at least Bebop.  Hell, it's only 26 half-hour episodes, and it really doesn't have the ridiculous crap that FMA:B does.

--edit--

Also, are you watching the English dubs or Japanese with English subtitles?  The dub of Bebop isn't bad, but I'd recommend watching either FMA series in Japanese.  I can't stand the dubs for those.

Last song you listened to.

Let it Be...Naked would be perfect if the single (George Martin-produced) versions of the title track, "Get Back" and "Don't Let Me Down" were used instead of creating new ones.  They already had non-Spectorized versions of those three songs, damn it!

Also, I'd have liked to see the full version of "Dig It" on the album (though I'm not upset at the lack of "Maggie Mae").

About half a season to go of Trailer Park Boys. Thanks Red! I didn't think it was that good at first, but a few episodes in I couldn't stop watching.

Breaker breaker, come in Earth. This is rocket ship 27. Aliens fucked over the carbonator on engine number 4; I'm gonna try and refuckulate it and land on Juniper. Uh, hopefully they got some space weed... over.

Fuck yeah TPB!

The last season can be a bit of a chore, what with Jacob and Phil Collins being pushed to the forefront in the absence of Cory and Trevor, but Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys (post-S7 special) and Countdown to Liquor Day (post-SGTTBG movie) both more than make up for the lackluster final season.

bkev had me watch Cowboy Bebop.

Usually I'm not a big anime guy (in fact I've never really watched it), but WOW this was amazing. In fact, my reaction to it comprised mostly of positive expletives.

Great.  Now I've got to marathon all of Bebop again...
