Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

I take back what I said before. Bill Hunt isn't a whore. Harry Knowles is a whore, an "it's Star Wars on Blu-ray!" whore. But then, I expected nothing less from the juvenile frat boys at Ain't It Cool News.

Yeah, while I don't mind AICN in general, but I've had very little respect for Harry Knowles in recent years.

That has now dropped down to zero respect at all.

Doctor Who
Time

Gotta agree, The Girl Who Waited has become, along with The Doctor's Wife, one of my favorite episodes of the entire series.  All the Series 6 naysayers can go eat a shoe!

My one criticism - WHO THE HELL WOULD PRESS THE RED BUTTON?!  Green = good, red = bad, so when you have the option why would you choose red?!

And damn, I was never one to criticize Karen Gillan's acting ability outright, but I was never particularly impressed by any of her performances.  But with this episode, she really showcased her considerable talents.  I hope that, once she's done with Who, she gets all sorts of work and doesn't fall victim to typecasting.

Oh, and Arthur Darvill was amazing, too, but he's been the one who has impressed me time and again these past two series, so that didn't particularly surprise me.

What was the "fatal flaw" of the Prequels if you think they sucked? (aka. Let's take a break from hating on the blu-rays)
Time

That they're completely unnecessary until you get to ROTS.  That movie is like an anthology of bullet points that should have been hit in all 3 movies, and it suffers for it.

But that's why many people liked it better than the others - it gave them what they were expecting out of the first 2 movies.

I still maintain that TPM is the best of the prequels, since, while it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of Star Wars, it has the most cohesive story of all the prequels.

On another subject, I'm kinda amused by the reaction to the blu-rays, while the NOOOOOOOO!!! is indeed a horrible change and ruins the scene (and I swear it has to be George giving us the finger, why else would he add the most ridiculised moment of the prequels?), the movie was ruined long ago, it's no worse than Hayden's ghost. Or Boba's voice in Empire. It's strange that for some reason this is the last straw for some people.

Ding!

Boba's voice and Hayden in ROTJ were the last straw for me, this is just rubbing lemon juice and salt in the wound.

IMO, a proper restoration via an X0 capture is the next best thing to a 35mm scan, which has almost no chance of happening (for legal & financial reasons).

Except that the JSC has less detail than the 93 (even with its smearing), and the GOUT was made from the original 93 master tape.  I have my doubts that any laserdisc transfer, X0 or no, could improve on the GOUT.

However...

An X0 capture of the JSC, properly "restored," could be used in tandem with the GOUT to make a "best of both worlds" version.  It might even be possible to combine JSC/GOUT shots to make new "hybrid" shots that look better than either version originally did.

But I still have my doubts.

There's a possibility that I may remove 'Episode IV - A NEW HOPE' from the beginning of the crawl

Please don't.  There isn't a good quality source for the 1981 crawl, and this would be the best we could possibly do.  (The 1997/2004/2011[?] crawl is not the same as the 1981 or 1977 crawls.)  Let the 1977 crawl stay on the GOUT.

--edit--

Wait, you're cancelling this project because you found out about a similar project that was started and never finished and will never see the light of day?!

Info Wanted: I've been out of the Fan Restoration scene since around 2005, have a few questions for anyone who can help, + a request for 1997 Special Edition preservations...
Time

DJ did a '97 SE set, and sent out some discs to beta testers (such as me and a few others) for preview purposes.

They look good and all, but they have worse smearing than the GOUT/'93 laserdisc master.  Because of this, I believe DJ decided not to publicly release them, which is a shame, even if the quality wasn't as good as everyone hoped it would be.

Beyond that I'm not entirely sure.

Lurking around, I have noticed all the different versions of fan edits and I have to say I am mostly relieved that there are better ways to see the unmolested OT than the GOUT. My question is, which version would be considered superior and what is the best way to go about getting them?

I'd recommend Dark_Jedi's GOUT V3 DVD restoration, or his similar Blu-Ray set if you have the hard drive space/a Blu-Ray burner/the technical know-how to convert it to a high-def MKV and watch it somehow.

Here's the forum thread about both projects.  I've got the V3 DVD, and I must say it's really fucking impressive that DJ was able to make the GOUT look as good as he did.

Frankly, I don't know why people are so surprised.  This is 2004 all over again.  "Oh, come on, that's ridiculous, it can't be real!  It's someone's idea of a joke!  Wait .... what?  Seriously?  Oh dear God ... "

As soon as I saw the "Nooooo!" I immediately thought, "Well, here we go again."

I'll continue to uphold my pledge of never purchasing another Star Wars-related item after the 2006 GOUT DVDs, until the OOT is properly restored and released.

Now I'm just waiting for the deleted scenes to leak...well, and I guess TPM, cos I kinda want to see the new Yoda, as hypocritical as that sounds...
