Return of the Jedi 1997 Special Edition HD Reconstruction (Released)
Time

Hmm…are you sure? I know the filename says v2, but the Rancor shots all look very 2004/2011 recomposited and not much like 1983/1997…

EDIT: That’s because they are, because V2 still uses the 2004/2011 recomps. The version I thought I was downloading as mentioned on October 9th’s post doesn’t actually exist yet. That’s disappointing, but entirely my own fault for not going back one more page to the September 30th post.

I think that’s a very safe assumption, yes.

Also, if anyone ever comes across a non-revised first draft, please let me know! I’ve never seen it. (The one I linked doesn’t say “revised,” but it’s identical to all the ones labeled “revised first draft” I’ve ever found and I just tried to link to the best-quality copy of each draft I could Google within ten minutes since I didn’t feel like figuring out which hard drive my PDF’s are on.)

Is there any mention of the extended conference room dialogue we saw only recently in any of the scripts?

Is there any script where Ben Kenobi does not die on the death star? This is an admitted change to the script by Lucus himself.

Could you actually link to some versions I did look at one version.

I think it is quite impossible to know you need original shooting script and shooting schedule and shooting script revisions. It would be quite complicated due to the various rewrites during shooting.

  1. Treatment/Synopsis (May 1973)
  2. Rough Draft (May 1974)
  3. Revised First Draft (July 1974)
  4. Second Draft (January 1975)
  5. Third Draft (August 1975)
  6. Fourth Draft (January 1976)
  7. Revised Fourth Draft (Shooting Script) (March 1976)
  8. Public Revised Fourth Draft (Conformed to edit) (Published 1979; claims January 1976 date)

<strong>4K77</strong> - Released
Time

Honestly, you guys might want to hold off. Dre is doing a reel by reel color correction that looks excellent and preserves the original color differences from shot to shot from the print (1.4 uses Sanjuro’s shot by shot color correction, which does not) and removes the green tint, and Williarob will be using Dre’s new correction for an update that will also replace many of the patched-in Blu-Ray frames with new 4K print scans (some from an LPP print, some from a 1997 SE print).

No set timetable or anything but I don’t think it’ll be too crazy long since Dre’s been working through the reels fairly quickly and I believe Williarob has already begun prepping the replacement frames so he can just drop in Dre’s LUTs once they’re finished.

Seems to me like it’ll be well worth the wait and might make v1.4 effectively obsolete.

Yeah, your life and sanity take precedence, especially when we’re talking about a movie that quite clearly brings you no joy.

Take a step (or ten) back and let others tackle this one for the time being. Who knows, maybe something that someone else does with it will spark some inspiration for you to hop back into it - and if not, there will absolutely be plenty of options for people to choose from to follow TLJ: Legendary!

(Let’s be real, don’t all of us have a hodgepodge of edits from different editors as our own personal “definitive” sagas at this point, anyway?)

Dealing with People Selling Fan Projects
Time

Hello,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this but I’m just wondering what the rules are with gifting the Despecialised Editions? My uncle is a Star Wars fan and owns the official release so would it be okay for me to make a copy for him or does he have to obtain it himself?

You can absolutely gift him a copy.

And what about gifting the Despecialised Editions to someone who doesn’t own an official release? I’m guessing you’d have to buy an official release for them to go with the Despecialised Editions to make it legitimate.

Here’s what I’ll say about this…

What do you mean, “legitimate?”

If you mean “legal,” then there’s nothing you can do to “make it legal,” because having a copy of Despecialized or any fan edit or restoration is inherently illegal no matter how you got it or what official version(s) you own.

If you mean “ethical,” that’s up for debate but personally, they’d need to own an official copy.

The “own the source” rule is to protect the project creators, the community, and the site, and doesn’t really have anything to do with legality.

But I can’t download them on my software

Why not? What is it about your “software” that prevents you from being able to download them?

The only computer I have is a horrible chromebook. It’s really only good for email.

That shouldn’t be a problem as long as you have an Internet connection and a large enough hard drive (which can be an external USB hard drive), right? Granted, I know next to nothing about Chromebooks, so maybe something else about them precludes being able to download large files…

I was just asking if you were talking about something along the lines of what he did, or something more drastic.

I’m talking about something that looks, expresses emotions, and moves more realistically and organic, like how real organisms would do.

Um. Okay. But how are you suggesting this be accomplished? Using morph effects like Adywan? Deepfaking CGI Yoda on top of puppet Yoda? Replacing puppet Yoda with CGI altogether? Genetically engineering a real Yoda, filming it, and compositing it over the puppet?

Suggesting a drastic change without an idea of how it might be achieved isn’t terribly useful.
