Are there bands for who you have all they've ever done?
Time

I’m not including live albums as I’m generally not a big fan of most live albums, and a few of these are kind of a cheat since they only have 1-3 albums, but I think this covers everyone I own the full discography of (in alphabetical order):

  • Arcade Fire
  • The Beatles
  • Bedouin Soundclash
  • The Black Keys
  • Cake
  • Dr. Dog
  • Explosions in the Sky
  • Fleet Foxes
  • Flight of the Conchords
  • Gorillaz
  • Grandaddy
  • Kavinsky
  • Led Zeppelin
  • M83
  • moe.
  • Muse
  • Pink Floyd
  • The Polyphonic Spree
  • Radiohead
  • Secret Machines
  • The Strokes
  • Tenacious D
  • Traffic
  • The Who

I’m close with Queen, Primus, and the Chili Peppers. I’ll probably round out Primus and maybe Queen as well, but doubt I ever will for RHCP.

ROTJ "Pre-film Training" Edit (* unfinished project* - lots of info)
Time

Okay, here’s my quick and dirty proof of concept edit.

I went with my initial sequence of events but decided to try cutting the Chewie/Boushh scene as discussed by others.

I did this very quickly before going to work. It finished rendering, I copied it to my phone, then left for work. (I mooched the work WiFi to upload it.) As such, there are areas I might have worked on more given more time.

So bear in mind:

  • The crawl is unchanged. Just imagine it’s different, because it has to be to sell this.
  • Threepio is still there when Han wakes up, but I cut his line and closeup. He’d need to be painted/cropped out or recolored to make it work.
  • The deleted scene is in worse shape than I remembered, but visually I think it could be polished to be acceptable (though never as good as the surrounding footage). The audio is a different story.
  • Obi-Wan’s ghost is gone.
  • I did a quick cut of the rebel briefing - this is one area I’d like to have worked on more. It’s iffy at best now.
  • This is only the first 45 minutes of the movie, as everything after the Tydirium exits hyperspace is unchanged.
  • I moved the Vader/Emperor scene after the rebel briefing to earlier, but I’m not convinced it works, particularly because there’s now no buffer between the briefing, Han giving Lando the Falcon, and the “fly casual” sequence.

And again, this is intended as proof of concept only. I also have not had time to watch it in one go yet, so it might play worse than I think it does (and I say that as someone who’s still not 100% convinced this is doable anyway).

So, here you go. Password is Restructure (the capital R is necessary).

TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released)
Time

HAL already said he’s not retiring retitling the movie like his PT edits.

Though if he were, I’d suggest Shadow[s] of the Empire, to keep the theme of using Legends novel titles. And the fact that it was the working title of Episode VII for a long time (the singular variation), according to (I think) Pablo Hidalgo.

JEDIT: damn autocorrect…

If you need to B*tch about something <strong>other than originaltrilogy.com</strong>... This is the place
Time

I’ve got night shift all week. Been training the new night shift guy, it’s his last week in training so we’re going on his shift starting tomorrow (he’s been training on my shift for two weeks). Trying to stay up until at least 6am since that’s the time I’ll be getting off.

This sucks. I hate night shift. I’m a night owl by nature, but that generally means I get tired around 2am and am in bed by 3, which is why I picked second shift at my job. Plus this week is mostly going to be a dry run of him on his own, which means I’m not going to be doing much of anything but sitting around letting him do everything while I’m just there for backup in case he has a problem.

I’m going to be so bored all week. Won’t even really get to hang out with any of my friends since they’ll all be on opposite schedules.

At least I got a new book to read…

SOLVED (Can't get h264 MKV to open in VirtualDub)
Time

JEDIT: Problem solved by installing the K-lite Codec Pack. Original post left below for posterity.

It’s been a while since I’ve done this, but I don’t remember having this much trouble.

I’m trying to convert a few different files (Harmy’s ROTJ v2.5, the 2011 ROTJ Blu-Ray, and the 2011 Blu-Ray deleted scenes) into Lagarith using VirtualDub.

I’m starting with the Harmy 2.5 since that’s gonna be my primary source (this is for a proof-of-concept rough restructuring of ROTJ as discussed in the edits section), so I don’t know yet if I’ll have the same trouble with the Blu-Ray (haven’t even ripped the discs to my hard drive yet).

So I used mkvtoolnix to make a new MKV with just the 2.5 video stream, used tsmuxer to demux the DTS-HD track I’ll be using, and used eac3to to convert the DTS-HD to WAV. So far, so good.

So now I’ve made an avisynth script to open my MKV in VirtualDub to convert, but every time I try I get this error:

Avisynth open failure:
DirectShowSource: Could not open as video or audio.

Video returned: “DirectShowSource: couldn’t open file D:\JediDesp.mkv:
Cannot play back the file. The format is not supported.”

Audio returned: “DirectShowSource: couldn’t open file D:\JediDesp.mkv:
Cannot play back the file. The format is not supported.”

(D:\JediDesp.avs, line 1)

My Avisynth script reads:

DirectShowSource(“D:\JediDesp.mkv”, fps=23.976)

I’ve tried it without the fps tag at the end, too.

Any suggestions? I’ve tried opening the MKV directly in VirtualDubMod and it just crashes, and I’ve tried all this with the non-remuxed file with all the audio tracks and chapters included, too.

Raiders was second in my viewing order. Yes it is a great movie, but strangely this movie does not age very well for me. Everytime i watch it, i see new cracks in its patina.

What?! What sort of cracks? Maybe I’m the one looking at the movie through nostalgia goggles, but I’ve never seen Raiders as anything less than a timeless, essentially flawless film.

That’s like mixing peanut butter and chocolate except the peanut butter is something called Jiff.

What can I say? She got really into the lore (old EU too, obviously), had red hair at the time, and you can make a reasonably accurate Mara Jade cosplay by just reaching into her closet and pulling out four or five random articles of clothing. It was kind of a no-brainer when the “What SW character should I dress up as?” question came up.

Don’t you think that opening the movie with some sort of Jedi training might give to ROJT a rehash feeling of TLJ ?

Well, one, we don’t know how TLJ will open, really. And two, no matter how you restructure the opening of ROTJ, there’s no training whatsoever to be seen - Luke has finished his training by the time the movie starts. In a restructure, it opens with Yoda telling Luke his training is complete and then dying. Don’t think TLJ will open like that, myself.

Yeah, I’m not sure. I think it might be the wording around it that gets me - to me, “revelations of Darth Vader” sounds right for plural, while “Darth Vader’s revelation” sounds better for singular.

Also, my apartment complex’s internet is still out, so while I’ll still be working on my rough proof-of-concept edit this weekend, I have no idea when I’ll be able to upload it for you guys to have a look at…

The Dream of the Giant Fractal Woodlouse.
Time

I have a recurring dream (well, more of a recurring theme within dreams) where my teeth fall out. Sometimes I try to put them back in, sometimes I pull them out, it depends.

Last night the dream started with my phone screen cracking and me trying to hold the pieces together without cutting myself, then progressed to my teeth falling out while I tried to hold them in with one hand and hold my phone together with the other.

It was stressful.

I like it a lot. I’d still keep Neverar’s opening line (It is a time of open war), which feels more in line with the opening lines of ANH and ESB. But the rest flows better, especially the third paragraph.

Not sure about “revelation” versus “revelations,” though. The plural sounds better, but I mean, it was only the one revelation, wasn’t it?

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Yeah, those should have many audio tracks, the first three being DTS-HD MA (#1 being 5.1, #2 being 2.0, #3 being mono). Don’t know why you’re not seeing the different tracks in VLC, they should definitely all be there.

Are you bitstreaming the audio without reencoding it to your receiver (that is, sending the raw DTS data instead of letting VLC or your Mac convert it to PCM or something else first)?

Might be a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt to HDMI issue, I’m not sure. Haven’t had a Mac in years, and when I did it was pre-Thunderbolt.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

No recomps or matte line erasing.

Choice between 1977 and 1981 crawls/opening shots through seamless branching.

Original six-track sound mix at minimum, original Dolby Stereo in addition would be a plus, original mono would be an even bigger plus. 85 and 93 home video remixes - meh.

Color timing reasonably accurate to 1977.

And then I’d be happy. In that scenario, worse comes to worst I’d do a regrade based on Neverar’s Technicolor and use the DTS audio tracks from Despecialized.

STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **
Time

If you think the suggestions for ROTJ:R so far are “pushing” Ady to go too far, you must not have been around for the ANH:R and ESB:R threads early on…

Point being, we throw a bunch of shit at the wall and Ady has proven he has a good head for taking the good suggestions and leaving the shit where it belongs. But sometimes you don’t know of something is good or shit until you throw it out there.

(To be fair, I wasn’t in the ANH:R thread until after its release, but I’ve read through most of the early pages by now.)

I wish to make clear that the reason I don’t offer all that much advice in here is because a lot of the problems here seem beyond my ability to find solutions. So I don’t offer any advice, in the thinking that no advice is better than bad advice.

I’d like to echo this and also say that sometimes I get to this thread after 2-3 replies have already been made that all add up to pretty much what I would have said anyway. Just because I don’t reply to a particular post doesn’t mean I don’t care - I do, and if anyone is having a rough time and wants to talk to someone one on one, you can PM me any time.

I wonder if Adywan is going to use Harmy’s Despecialized version to replace the out-of-focus section (shuttle Tydirian approach and landing on Endor).

Oh shit, I forgot about that. I really hope he doea. Or at least get the raw scan files from Harmy if not ripping it straight from the Despecialized MKV.
