“Get this man a shield.”
YES!
I’m finally getting proper Internet back tomorrow, and to top it off, they’re giving me the 40Mbps plan at the same price I was paying for the 25Mbps plan as an apology for them fucking me over for months! Hooray!
But also fuck apartment complexes that only offer one off-brand ISP instead of letting you pick from whoever services the area at large.
I liked all of those, but didn’t like Finn’s boyfriend line. On the other hand, I really like Maz’s boyfriend joke, so I guess it balances out.
Yeah, the only jokes in TFA that I didn’t like we’re “You got a boyfriend? Cute boyfriend?”, “Droid, please!”, and the trash compactor bit.
There might be more that just didn’t land with me, but these were the only ones that made me cringe.
And I also loved Kylo’s “temper tantrums.” I think they’re pretty essential to his character too. I think (as a general rule) most people who took issue with them were set their expectations of what kind of villain Kylo would be, and his instability as shown in the film were at odds with those expectations.
Like many little things in TFA, I think the “tantrum” thing will be less of an issue in retrospect after TLJ and/or IX come out and we get a clearer picture of Kylo’s character arc.
JEDIT:
I’m glad people like the Starlight mockups. I’m a big fan of keeping the focus on Rey as much as possible, and trying to imply that she’s learning over an extended period of time through Ren’s interrogations. Even though the discussion has moved on a bit, I had made this mockup just this morning:
https://vimeo.com/244699807
Password: reyI feel like the transition from the first Rey scene to the briefing room is too quick for a wipe. It would honestly be better as a straight cut. Personally, I think the wipes really only work well with establishing shots and long takes, where they can really luxuriate.
Yep, overuse of wipes is one of my biggest pet peeves in SW fan edits (and with theatrical Episodes II and III).
Though I’ll also say that I think theatrical TFA underused them, but that’s another story. They only really belong when there’s a passage of time or a drastic change in location (as in, not from outdoors to indoors, as an example).
I don’t know what OBS is, but if it’s a screen capturing program, I’d prefer not to use it. I’d rather download the stream itself directly to preserve the best possible quality and avoid any potential buffering, frame rate, or auto-reported/bitrate adjustment issues.
Supposedly they can be freely updated and all online/streaming features should work as normal, too.
Sidenote: it seems that the region-hacked UBP-X800 does have a PAL<>NTSC decoder built in, according to a couple of the sites that sell it.
You can find modified region free players pretty cheap on Ebay these days.
I’ve been keeping my eye on region-unlocked UHD BR players recently, but I can’t find clear info on whether the one I want (the Sony UBP-X800) has a built-in PAL<>NTSC decoder or not, which is a deal breaker for me with all my R2 Doctor Who DVDs.
Plus the UHD ones are all like $500…😒
And the final run time is 151 minutes, so the “2h30m” talk that’s been going around wasn’t rounding up or down very much at all.
Hasn’t the runtime been known for a while? When I bought my tickets in early October it was listed as exactly that - 151 minutes.
All I ever saw/heard was “2 and a half hours,” which isn’t super specific (I’ve seen movies of 140m-160m called “2 and a half hours”). BBFC length listing is as accurate as you can get though (and since it’s not a listing for a DVD release, there’s no PAL speedup to account for).
You should be able to use mkvtoolnix to split both versions at the same time code, then load up the first chunk (crawl and opening shot) from v3 and append the second chunk (rest of the film) from v4.2 and render out a new MKV. That’s how I join films that are split across two discs (like the LOTR EE’s).
(The append part, not the split part - I think it splits along keyframes, so if your keyframes aren’t in the same spot there might be a problem with this method.)
And the final run time is 151 minutes, so the “2h30m” talk that’s been going around wasn’t rounding up or down very much at all.
Not popular enough for someone to upload it to a public tracker, and even if someone did I’d be shocked if it was still seeded.
I haven’t seen the octorox edits yet, how are they?
The post-VHS editing changes to TPM (extended podraxe, air taxi sequence) kill the already-shaky pacing of TPM for me. I have been seriously considering doing an “updated theatrical cut” which takes the Blu-Ray video (with CGI Yoda and such) and conforms it to the theatrical edit, so that if I ever have the desire to watch a non-fanedited TPM, I don’t have to sit through that puppet or the dumb extra scenes ever again…
I’ve been doing one a week leading up to TLJ (watched ESB last night) and I find myself really looking forward to watching TFA again in two weeks.
Gonna have to flip a coin to decide whether to watch the theatrical or HAL’s Restructured V1 when I get to it though. (But if Restructured V2 is out by then, it’ll definitely be that.)
I second the vote for HAL 9000’s prequel trilogy edits, especially Episode II.
I’ve also heard of people doing Seciors’ Episode I, HAL’s Episode II, and l8wrtr’s Episode III for various reasons (it’s slightly closer to canon anyway since l8wrtr doesn’t keep Padme alive and I believe he also kept the Yoda/Sidious duel which HAL cut).
I also quite liked NFBism’s Canon Cut of Episode III, but it’s not 100% finished yet and he hasn’t been around lately from what I can tell. For that you’d have to PM him for a link to the workprint. He’s got a thread for it in the SW Fan Edits section of the forum.
Oh, that 45-minute long deal is mine. It was just a proof of concept for a possible way of restructuring the opening of the film, it’s not a complete edit. It wasn’t a short preview of a longer work, those 45 minutes are all there is, and it was a very quick-and-dirty cut job.
Awesome idea! Even if HAL doesn’t go for it with Restructured, you should definitely use that for your Starlight edit.
Thanks! I’ll give it a shot when I have a chance to.
I assumed it was just his turn to be on sanitation duty while he was deployed there, not that it was his only job. If all he ever was was a janitor, then why the fuck would he have been assigned to the assault squad on Jakku?
I was making fun of people that hate CGI no matter what even if it looks a lot better than what a practical effect would look like. A couple years ago someone made a post nearly identical to mine except they were serious.
Ah, my bad. Yeah, there’s so much of that mentality around for reals that it’s hard to tell if someone’s being serious or not when they say things like that.
It was.
Yeah, the apes are 100% the focus of War. Woody Harrelson is pretty much the only human character of any consequence in the film (well, him and the little mute girl).
It’s not senseless at all. The costumes made sense in the originals because they were already intelligent apes. These movies are about normal apes slowly becoming intelligent over the course of 3 movies (and though they’re basically intelligent by movie 2, many apes carry over across all 3 films, so suddenly turning Caesar, Maurice, and Rocket from CGI into men in costumes would be jarring) - a person in a costume would look too human to properly sell it. And the motion capture is so well done - I can’t see anyone turning in a performance like Serkis did as Caesar under a costume and heavy makeup.
Give the movies a shot. They’re better than you think, especially the second and third.
Add RTMPDumpHelper to the list of programs Google suggested that didn’t work at all for me…
War for the Planet of the Apes
Absolutely fantastic ending to a trilogy that was better than it ever had any business being (and one of the rare trilogies that gets better with each film).
Much less action-oriented than I expected - it was advertised as Saving Private Ryan with apes, but it’s really more of a Schindler’s List/Apocalypse Now/Bridge on the River Kwai mashup with apes, and I loved every second of it. Woody Harrelson did a great job as the Kurtz figure, and of course Serkis was brilliant as Caesar.
The effects were even more stunning than the first two films - at many points I forgot I was watching mocap CGI apes, which I don’t think ever really happened with Rise and Dawn.
Highly recommended. Here’s hoping if they continue the series they don’t fuck it up, but even if they do I’m very happy pretending anything past this trilogy doesn’t exist (like I do with the Bourne series).
9 CGI gorillas out of 10.
Hey everyone. I initially avoided posting this in here because I didn’t want anyone to assume that I’m asking this for the purposes of piracy, but the project-specific thread doesn’t seem to be getting much traction, so here we are.
What’s the best way to capture Hulu video?
I ask because I’m trying to preserve the 22-minute episode cutdowns of the 90-minute Futurama movies, which are currently on Hulu in their 22-minute form.
Ideally, I’d like to find some software that can capture and download the video and audio streams directly, without reencoding if at all possible.
I’ve tried KeepVid and Freemake Video Downloader, neither of which worked for me at all. Hulu seems to have locked out the methods the programs used to use.
Any suggestions?
