The Force Awakens 3D vs. 2D

There is allegedly a test the eye doctor can do to check if your eyes are attuned to the 3D experience. I suspect my eyes struggle more than others but maybe I just don’t enjoy it.

Well, there’s no shortage of crazy pop-out effect movies to test yourself out on. It’s quite possible to see the effect and fail to see the point of the effect, which is where I’ve pretty much landed on every “You just have to see this in 3D!” movie. Assuming you can see the effect, it’s just a matter of finding the type of film it where you can see the point of the effect (which is subjective), and then whether you actually like that type of film (which is also subjective). If I opt to see TFA, it’ll definitely be in 2D.

Project Threepio (Star Wars OOT subtitles)

Judging by your avatar, I assume you’re a Ghibli fan - I bet after doing a project like this, the dubtitles on some of Disney’s Ghibli releases bother you a lot.

Ha! They don’t bother me at all – I have the Japanese versions 😉

But seriously, some people love dubs, and some people love subtitles that match their dubs (and this latter part makes sense from a hearing impaired point of view). In fact, we have had at least one project here to create subtitles that more closely resemble a particular dub. All translations are imperfect, but dubtitles are just not my thing.

What really bugs me about the Disney releases is the altered credits. If you’re not watching the dub, why see the dubbing credits?

Return of the Jedi - Why so much hate? What do you guys think of it?

For me, the real problem with Jedi is that, story wise, it only does two things: tie up loose ends in a not so flattering fashion and finish Luke’s story.

That’s a plus and a minus to me. I still enjoy the film, but I can feel how threadbare and problematic it is. As such, I’m glad it uses whatever gusto it still can muster to wrap up the story of Star Wars. In many ways, it was very gutsy for Lucas to say farewell to the Star Wars galaxy with Jedi, and then just pack it up and go home. After the runaway success of the Star Wars films (even Jedi), he’d certainly have been tempted to make more films, even after the inspiration and care behind these films had been thoroughly burnt out. I hate to think about what might have been.

I’d argue that the LD-transfers are a better option: Upscaling to HD, then downscaling the footage back to SD isn’t doing it any favors.

If that’s all that happened, I might agree–but we’re not talking about simply upscaling a small image to a large size and then downscaling it back to a medium size again. Even on a GOUT-only frame, there’s image stabilization, dirt/scratch/glue mark removal, and color correction–all of which are much more noticeable than the barely-perceptible-at-best quality loss from the scaling roundtrip, and make a DVD downscale noticeably better than the GOUT source. The HD-sourced material looks so much more detailed on an anamorphic DVD downscale than the GOUT, that I think that anyone who finds the little compromises of the DeEd’s worth it in HD will also find them worth it in anamorphic SD. The increased detail of the DVD over the GOUT is staggering, which says something about the GOUT. Not to mention that, among its other problems, the GOUT uses 93 audio. Of course, other people’s priorities may vary.

Actually, I forgot to mention one of the biggest gripes story-wise with ROTJ, because at this point it’s so ingrained: Leia is Luke’s sister. I mean, Jesus, really? Vader being Luke’s father worked, sure, and it blew everyone’s mind. But Leia is his sister?!? All this does is add soap opera dynamic with no payoff. I remember at the time, people saw it and started joking that Han was Luke’s brother, and Chewie was his dog, etc. It became the subject of parody–the entire Star Wars galaxy was shrinking down to one family. I mean nobody went completely bonkers and claimed Darth and Greedo were childhood friends or that Darth made C-3PO in his basement, but it was still widely ridiculed. And I feel it was a fair criticism.

Yeah, 9 to 10 a day is a health problem. Not like alcohol poisoning or anything that will show up right away, but more like liver damage and stuff that slowly accumulates for years. Yes, you can go for years and years at that rate with no signs of health problems, and then suddenly your liver gives out and you have a big problem all at once. Warbler is right–there is some urgency, even if it’s not apparent at all right now. By the time it finally shows up it will be very hard to deal with.

Cheers for the reply. I do have VLC but just to clarify, that is it yeah. I just need to watch the .m2ts file in VLC. The other files are only relevant for burning to DVD?

Mostly, yeah. The other files also have the chapter stops embedded and that’s potentially useful on any platform but the M2TS file is all of the audio and video.

You really have to browse around for free/cheap mental health/addiction services, or places that have a “sliding scale” payment plan, where you’re essentially subsidized by other people, or stuff like that. A lot of that is pretty steeped in various churches, so that may be an issue (you can always fake being religious in a program like AA, but dishonesty is often counterproductive when getting sober, so I’m not sure someone like me could ever get any benefit from AA). Another option (at least assuming you’re in the US) is to find a “just for the benefits” job. i.e. something that may be a little soul-killing and doesn’t offer any sort of future in its own right, but offers good health benefits. Another option is moving, at least in the short term, to a place with better access to healthcare, long enough to get this sorted out. If alcohol is an issue, I recommend against Australia 😉

Info Wanted: 'LOTR - FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING': Green tint removed?

Seems that my release has a very little green tint in respect to your example pictures. Maybe they recently “fixed” the EE BDs trilogy?

People pretty regularly report that they have mysteriously unaffected discs. In every case, it’s a matter of display calibration–the display isn’t showing as much of a green tint simply because the display (or the player) isn’t showing all of the green that’s actually on the disc. If you rip the disc and capture stills direct from the data on the disc, I’m absolutely certain they’ll be an exact match.

Hate’s a pretty strong word. I think it’s the worst of the three Star Wars films (there are only three), but I still enjoy it enough. Here’s where it falls down:

  • Unfunny funny bits: Comic droid torture, various Ewok slapstick, Chewie gives a Tarzan yell. These are the little excesses that, in earlier years, may have been pruned out, back when Lucas listened to criticism. Humor is good, but good humor is better.
  • Nobody has much to do except Luke, the Emperor, and Vader. Han is pretty useless, Leia stops being useful when the disguise comes off.
  • Nobody has uncertain loyalties. Han and Lando both wear white hats from the beginning. No scoundrels. Yawn.
  • Some people think the second Death Star is a cop-out. I didn’t mind so much.
  • Cute Ewoks. For me, it’s not so much that the Ewoks are cute per se, so much as that cuteness is really played up. The “roasting on a spit” sight gag was already so stale in 1983 that the audience knew there was never any menace (note that for younger folks, the “roasting on a spit/boiling in a kettle” trope might not be as thoroughly familiar as it was to audiences at the time).
  • Lots of exposition. Sure, it starts with a big action scene in Jabba’s palace, but quite a lot of the scenes are just people standing and talking. Luke and Yoda, Luke and Ben, Luke and Leia, Luke and Darth, even Luke and the Emperor a bit.

That said, it brings some good things to the table, IMO:

  • Great designs, scenery, effects. Sure, the Rancor looks a bit like a bluescreen menace, but Jabba’s palace in general, the the space battle were both great.
  • The score is still solid. I actually don’t care for the Ewok theme (talk about playing up cutesy), and the Yub Nub song and Lapti Nek only look good compared to what they were replaced with, but the rest is very solid. John Williams hadn’t hit his decline just yet IMO.
  • Even though the plot was overly focused on Luke’s journey IMO, Luke and the Emperor both are very engaging, and deliver with strong performances.
  • It closes the Star Wars story. While Empire followed more of an episodic cliffhanger path, this film clearly resolves things. I’m satisfied with a Star Wars saga comprised of three films, and feel no need for more.

Feel free to ignore this, free advice often being worth the price.

You’ve pretty much described the dictionary definition of depression. The meds work, if you can find the right ones. A lot of people are reluctant to go that route, but really, c’mon, here’s one problem in life that you can actually take a pill for–please consider it. I’m not a doctor, counselor, blah blah blah. But seriously, sometimes you need a crutch to get back on your feet, and sometimes it turns out you need it for your whole life. Pills are a pretty minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things–find a professional, talk to them, see if they think a prescription would help. Also, major changes of scene can do wonders, if you have the means.

Also, metaphorically speaking, it’s a good idea to get your house in a reasonably orderly state if you want people to start staying there with you. Honesty is good, but there’s still such thing as timing. Don’t rush things unnecessarily.
