Hello new user titl… damn!
And yet you gave it a six out of ten right? To me, a six out of ten means that it’s good, or at least above average.
Star ratings are really useless without context for this very reason–the abstract aggregate numbers don’t even mean remotely the same thing to different people.
To me, five out of ten means at no time were you ever wondering why you bothered watching the movie, but also at no time after watching the movie were you particularly pleased that you saw it. It passed the time, was worth whatever money you spent on it, but was pretty empty. Six out of ten means it’s somewhat entertaining when watching it, but still pretty empty. Four out of ten means you sighed and looked at your watch a few times, and hurried out when it was over.
I also give Jedi a 6 out of ten. It’s wildly uneven. Some parts are 7.5, some are 3.5. In the SE, the highs are about the same, but the lows drop down to 0 and are more frequent, so I’d say the SE hurt Jedi’s reputation much, much more than Clerks. I love it because it’s part of the trilogy. On its own merits, I’m not sure I’d use the word love. FWIW, I give Star Wars a 7.5, Empire an 8 (both OOT), and TFA a 5.5. TPM, AOTC, and ROTS get 0.8, 0.6, and 0.3 respectively. The Holiday Special gets a 2.
Wait a sec… did I just out-Eeyore generalfrevious?
No. To do that you’d have to say that the OOT will never, ever, ever be released on Blu-ray/Ultra HD Blu-ray/Holographic Ultraviolet/Infrared 4D-ray, which will directly lead to Trump becoming dictator-for-life of the entire world, whose regime will almost certainly accelerate global warming a trillionfold, causing the Earth to go supernova and destroy one-third of the whole galaxy in the process.
I’m sure he regrets saying one-third.

TFA was literally built on elements solely from ANH & ESB.
Sigh, I wish that were so. There were still a few WTF moments in TFA, where I was taken out of the film by some prequelism. The mention of “clones” as something that actually might still happen as opposed to ancient history, and the mention of “Sith” as if we were supposed to know what the heck that was. Then for Jedi references, there’s Vader’s melted mask, for example. There were also some more buried prequelisms, such as prequel flags, etc, but yes the larger point is that is was almost exclusively OOT or original elements, which certainly helped it immensely. You could argue that “clones” was an OOT element that was just bizarrely anachronistic, and that “Sith” was a reference to OOT source materials and EU stuff that predates the prequels, but nevertheless they felt off to me (and they were both completely frivolous to the plot and should have been excluded to avoid WTF reactions).
It’s interesting that SW’s “glory days” lasted only three years.
As of May 24th, 1983, there were only two Star Wars films. So if you’re saying the “glory days” are the years in which only Star Wars and/or Empire existed, that’s six years (1977-1983). That’s if I understand your intent correctly. If you intended to say Empire sucked all the glory out of the franchise, then you just go right ahead saying three years.
I think we’ve seen enough of it and know enough about his sources and his methods to say that this is the best restoration of Star Wars anywhere.
After watching his videos, I don’t see how anybody could even argue that.I think the main reason is that it doesn’t have any competition. Reliance and TN1 (as great as it is, it’s not really in the same tier from what we’ve seen).
And Reliance isn’t an OOT restoration, which makes it inferior to all of the above.
I like Frink’s “Schrödinger’s Film” description of Legacy. Star Wars is both saved and not saved until you watch it and the wave function collapses.
Alternate dialects are welcome too (but someone needs to make the SRT files, ideally using the template files)
JUST HEARING THE WORD SKINTONE MAKES MY OWN FUCKING SKIN CRAWL!!!
Tempted to put that in my sig. Nice find.
Find? It’s bookmarked until the end of time. It’s the only post in my personal OT.com Hall of Fame. Unless -1 comes back and posts a “Yeah, I was just messing with you guys, I never left.” message, which would probably make the cut too.
Will it be done by this weekend? I want to watch it with my dad.
Also, are the skin tones correct?
Absolutely would love that. Just use the English template files, and you might be able to use Tagalog Wikipedia to find the “official” Tagalog translations for various Star Wars characters, etc.
PM sent (font-only link doesn’t exist, so it’s the whole project)
Undetermined.
It was horrible in its day, sure, but horrible has long since been redefined, and the Holiday Special simply no longer qualifies.
You’ve already watched ROTS. The Holiday Special will be a cakewalk.
Just use eac3to’s “speedup” feature, which compresses the audio the right amount, but this also increases the pitch of the audio, so the pitch will be wrong, but no more wrong than the original PAL GOUT. Compressing the audio without changing the pitch would likely require more serious audio editing software. Don’t worry about the extra frames, you’re not going to notice and it’s quite a lot more work to fix those.
I don’t know of any Tagalog resources for Star Wars – subtitles or dubs. If you find anything at all, please let me know!
I suspect the dub was created by the local TV broadcaster, and so would only be available if someone recorded them. I haven’t seen Tagalog dubs on any Lucasfilm home video releases. Editing SE audio to match the GOUT is possible, but not easy. I’ve done it before (and might do it again).
If you’re interested, Project Threepio has English “template” subtitle files, which anyone could translate into their language of choice. That would probably be the easiest way to make it Tagalog-accessible, and I’d love to add Tagalog to our supported language list.
Quality issues aside, there are also content differences between official releases.
The GOUT is the only official home video release with the original theatrical crawl and flyover for Star Wars. All other releases feature the revised 1981 crawl and flyover, the one where the musical cue for Tatooine’s arrival is about two seconds off.
Each home video release also uses the latest audio revision, which at least for Star Wars and Empire, includes content differences. A sound effect is missing on all Empire releases using the 1993 audio, and pre-1985 Star Wars releases are the only ones with theatrical audio.
Buy used, throw away everything except the so-called Original Trilogy discs, glue those three together (shiny side in), run a string through them, and suspend them inside a wall cavity, or even a hollow tree in the yard. You can pull them out if you ever need to prove ownership, but there will be no risk of an unsuspecting houseguest or innocent child accidentally being exposed to the films on them.
At least that’s what I did.
I know this is probably a long shot, but any chance of pulling the snake reflection, rolling rock bar out of the LPP scan? i.e. to replace onscreen content that’s simply not present in the HDTV version?
I don’t think he wants to get into any roto or clean up, so he’s just using the WOWOW and BD.
I figured that was likely the case, but I was tempted to ask because it would be so great.

04 Oct : Shaun of the Dead (2004)
14 Oct : The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Not that I disapprove at all, but there’s a couple comedies in the mix 😉
Seems like a very good list IMO. Just saw “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night”, which starts off threatening to go a little too far in the kitschy-artsy vein, but quickly becomes quite good. Plus, skateboarding Persian vampire, what’s not to like. Kinda like if Jim Jarmusch made a vampire movie, highly recommended.
Random troopers seems pretty easy. Storm/Snow/Scout gives you some decent variation without even leaving the OT (which I always hate to do). It is originaltrilogy.com after all. Rebel/imperial insignia would work too.
I’m inclined against any imperial images as a default, though. Some people can be strangely sensitive to being designated a “bad guy” on day 1, so I’d say rebel insignia.
The “standard” symbol of the rebellion was retrofitted onto the OT as a branding exercise, but there were actually lots of rebel insignia to choose from.
Careful, draw too much attention to the topic at hand and people might realize the topic was a little silly to begin with.
Huh. Really did not expect Frink being the one coming out of this exchange smelling like monkey pee. Others, sure, but not this one.
I’ll take the 42nd Anniversary Thread for two reasons.
Someone start a thread to guess what those two reasons are.
I’m hoping if you take back this request, you can make the resulting thread unhappen.
