Nice images! What on earth has happened to Lucasfilm’s once revered QA?

Thanks, but I simply copied and pasted them from the academic George Lucas: Star Wars Creator, Unreliable Narrator & Time Travelling Revisionist thread.

As for Lucasfilm’s QA and what happened to it? It is so long ago I doubt anyone there is old enough to remember when they had a good reputation for that kind of thing, let alone actually have a high QA standard for their releases.

“Deliberate creative decisions” for the 2004 OT DVDs still makes me laugh until I’m tearing up, nearly 20 years later!

Yes, of course. But I think even if it there was an official release we would still likely need fan projects to fix or improve them.

2004 SE DVD? Awful. “Deliberate creative decisions” bullshit, faulty discs, more changes, terrible blue coloring.
2006 GOUT DVD? Insulting. An obsolete and low effort release of a 13 year lasderdisc transfer, and huge DNR issues.
2011 SE blu ray? Awful. More coloring issues and loss of detail. More changes too. Nooo-oooooooo!
2019 SE 4k/UHD? Poor. Yet more changes, It was better than the previous efforts, but big losses of image detail.

That is a good point. Surprising too, isn’t it?

2004

2006

2011

2019

I’d still want an official release for the same reason as you, a chance for the talents on here to fix and improve upon any issues.

And also to make those unaltered cuts available to as a wider audience as possible. Available on the store shelves or on Disney+ for anyone interested to simply buy and experience. Without the technical knowledge sometimes needed to obtain and watch the awesome fan projects.

As in The 'Naysayer Guide’ by people who DON’T want an unaltered theatrical release of the OT thread:

4:There are Harmy Despecialized Editions and TN1’s 4KXX fan versions - I have those and am happy with them!

We know - we’re the same community that these quality projects originated from (and many more fan endeavours besides). 😃

We’re very happy with them too! Still, as amazing as these preservation projects are - and they are truly amazing… not everyone is aware of them. Nor is everyone computer-savvy enough to get a hold of them. Online fans do make a up hefty percentage of Star Wars fandom - but we are by no means in the majority… both older and younger fans, people not online much, and indeed people who are online - yet simply aren’t aware of the existence or availability of these fan preservations… would all benefit from having an official version to be able to simply buy.

An official high quality release - whether on the store shelf, available to order online, or even to buy and experience on the Disney+ streaming service, should be readily available and accessible to everyone.

And in the fading hope that Lucasfilm may actually put out an actual high QA release of the Original Trilogy, for the first time since the 90s, like you said.

<strong>Star Wars Outlaws</strong> | OT era | PC, PS5, XBox X/S | the 1st open world game in Star Wars
Time

If this pulls off the space combat well, like a cross between the recent Squadrons and old Rogue Squadron games then I’ll be happy, with simple short missions or the ability to hang around a large battle and take down a load of Imperial or Syndicate ships. I’ll be hoping for more videos or articles showing the ability to do just that, anyway. 😃

I did enjoy Squadrons, and find it to be one of the better games in recent years. But something little more simple, or arcade-like, would just hit the right spot for me.

Great thread too, SoBS!

The same here. Finally an open world adventure shooter game set in the OT era. It has been a long time since the the old Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games.

The space combat caught the eye too, and appears to be simpler than the Squadrons game. Instead, more like a modern take on the old X-Wing/Tie-Fighter games, which is always a bonus.

I’m a little similar to yourself, but was fortunate enough to be able to put Harmy’s Despecialized Editions onto a USB stick, and plug that into the back of my TV set. It works beautifully, and saved me having to relearn how to burn discs and buy a burner and discs, find the software, and read the manuals!

I’m told I just have to copy and paste any new versions onto them and they’ll work fine too. Harmy has done v3 of ROTJ already in HD and 4K/UHD, and is working on the other two OT films.

It may be worth checking out a SUB stick as an option too?

Yes, some of comparison shots between the official releases with the far superior fan projects, in that “George Lucas Unreliable Narrator thread” really surprised me. What has happened to Lucasfilm’s once famous QA since the 1990s?

The Clone Wars messes up continuity or how Lucas is still destroying star wars.
Time

^ The Kings of baffling retcons in Star Wars. Often it is simply unnecessary alterations or re-writes of other creatives’ work in the GFFA.

I recently found the following on Lucas and Filoni’s 2008’s The Clone Wars animated series; the retcons and discrepancies it has with the EU, or previous onscreen Star Wars content, so thought it could be of interest to some people on here?

More so now that Dave Filoni appears to be re-doing Heir To The Empire for a New Republic setting, and has form for making strange or unnecessary alterations to other creatives’ previous work on Star Wars, or making straight-up retcons to them:

Before the Disney era, what did the 2008 Clone Wars series retcon in the EU? - on the Star Wars EU reddit

In the above reddit thread there are two additional links to lists of 2008’s The Clone Wars retcons & discrepancies with the EU:

Why doesn’t The Clone Wars fit into the Star Wars Legends continuity? - on The Archivists quora, with interesting conclusions

This 2021 article from ScreenRant highlights the many contradictions TCW created to the pre-established lore and continuity:

Why The Clone Wars Doesn’t Fit Into The Star Wars Legends Continuity

A 2024 article from ScreenRant giving an informative overview and highlights George Lucas’ relationship with the EU:

“The thing about Star Wars is that there’s one universe" - Leland Chee in 2008 (Keeper of the Holocron / continuity administrator)

^ More quotes from various high-ups at Lucasfilm stating the EU is considered canon at the SW Force 4 Continuity site.

These long-form video essays by the Sheev Talks YouTube channel were also explanatory and insightful:

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Does Not Hold Up (Part 1) - 2 hours

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Still Doesn’t Hold Up (Part 2) - 2 hours 50 minutes

I then thought about some of the other retcons and alterations that Dave Filoni has made in his Star Wars projects to other creatives’ previous work in the GFFA… and I ended up going down a bit of a rabbit hole on this! I’ve edited in more articles and information below on just some of his retcons to… the EU, in both Legends and Canon, the Prequel Trilogy, 2003 Clone Wars, Rebels, The Bad Batch, The Mandalorian, Book of Boba Fett, Tales of the Jedi, and also for the Ahsoka series.

Republic Commando and other Karen Traviss content to Star Wars lore.

The retconning, or ripping up, of Karen Traviss’ previously established work in the EU for Mandalore and Mandalorians (also on clone soldiers), for George & Filoni’s 2008 The Clone Wars animated film and tv series. So much so that Traviss felt she was unable to continue with the series of stories she was telling, mainly for the Republic Commando multi media project, and quit writing for Star Wars:

End of one era, start of another… - Karen Traviss announcement on her blog, in August 2009:

“I can’t discuss the canon issues because of the standard non-disclosure agreement that all writers sign. I’m not even going to discuss the ones that are public now, and I know little of the full detail anyway. So please don’t ask me. All I can say is that I was given enough of the detail in January to realise that changes in continuity were such that I wouldn’t be able to carry on as originally planned with the storylines you were expecting to see continued in my books. It would have required a lot more than routine retcon.”

2003 Clone Wars.

The many needless retcons & alterations made in Lucas & Filoni’s 2008’s The Clone Wars series and film, contradicting Genndy Tartakovsky’s established and popular 2003 series. Genndy’s 2003 series was originally canon, part of the official 2002-2007 Clone Wars multimedia project, until the decision was made to do the 2008 animated theatrical film and tv series on the back of that popularity, and the original 2003 series was then de-canoned:

^ More sources for the Ahsoka series will be added as the program progresses and if/when retcons or alterations take place.

I genuinely hope Filoni’s New Republic film and Mandoverse finale will be a success, somewhere nearing Andor’s outstanding levels of quality across the board. Although I also hope Filoni doesn’t make any more unnecessary alterations or retcons in it, or to previous Star Wars content and history, if he is indeed re-doing or revamping “Heir To The Empire” for this latest project.

As oojason and Emre both allude to in their comprehensive ‘contradictions, inconsistencies & continuity issues’ threads, in the…

‘Original Trilogy vs later Star Wars: plot holes, inconsistencies, contradictions, disconnects, mental gymnastics, + stretches etc’

…section of the ‘An Index for General Star Wars Discussion’:

Obviously, every fan has different outlooks, takes, and levels of interest depending upon each of the retcons, continuity issues, discrepancies and inconsistencies etc. For some fans, it may be a big thing, highly annoying, perplexing, or a concerning ongoing trend. For other fans, not so much, or barely registering. Maybe enjoying the different “point of view”, or alternative new take. Or even somewhere in between. YMMV.

I am a fan of Dave Filoni and his work overall. Some of the better stories in the GFFA, post-Prequel Trilogy, have been created and penned by him. Yet that doesn’t mean he has the right to effectively erase, contradict, or re-write other creators’ previous work in Star Wars. Something that Filoni has a penchant for, for a long time. All without crediting the original creators.

Most are retcons that were quite needless, superfluous, and yet also flagrant, to the point of questioning whether he is making these numerous redundant alterations or continuity issues deliberately, for some reason?

The whole “The Legendary Star Wars Expanded Universe Turns a New Page” Legends/Canon idea back in 2014, was meant to keep the all the stories more consistent and interconnected in the Galaxy Far, Far Away, sitting along side with their film and television content. Yet Filoni has re-written and retconned over some of that new canon material for his projects, most of which were unnecessary to the actual stories being told.

Lucasfilm’s aim in 2014 at implementing “internal consistency” for their content, “interconnected storytelling”, “coordinating creative development”, and being a “creatively aligned program of Star Wars storytelling”; all of which appear in the linked announcement above, seems to have been either lost, ignored, or simply voided, some time ago.

Or from the 2014 Star Wars Expanded Universe: Past, Present, & Future official “Legends/Canon” announcement video:-

“We now have a story department so that there truly can be one consistent narrative - and that’s always been the dream. I think the idea of aligning the content is actually a really fantastic and exciting opportunity that no other fictional universe could really even support. We’re going to be able to bring fans a unified vision in a way that we’ve never done before. And I think it’s a also sacred trust to be invited to be a part of telling stories inside this universe because it’s so precious to people, and I understand because it’s precious to me.” - Lucasfilm VIPs.

The above 2014 video from the official Star Wars YouTube channel also includes this quote from Dave Filoni:-

“It feels real when everything is in line. And I think that is the challenge for all of us going forward with Star Wars. How are we responsible with what was? And how do we still move forward even if things become very different? I think the EU will be a legacy that is mined forever.”

Anyway, if Dave Filoni is going to continue to mine both the EU + post 2014 Canon, and then rewrite, alter, or retcon that previous material then the least he could do is start to credit the work of others he is using in his own stories. How should I put this politely?: that he is lifting from, riffing on, or paying homage to. Less politely politely?: copying from others’ work, plagiarising from, or repurposing past history and events to pass off as ‘his own’? And in doing so, pissing off many people who grew up with, and have fond memories of, some of this prior much loved content.

Start to credit the original creatives, list the original work; their books, novels, comics, games, sourcebooks, soundtracks, fanon etc. Credit them at the end of every episode in which their work is featured. Or list them up on the official site in the episode guides, so fans can easily find those original works at their leisure, and the original creatives can also be properly credited.

Maybe people will take an interest in those previous original works, go out, and purchase them. Wins and respect all around.

I am not sure what the forum policy is for bumping older threads. After searching through the Index thread for a relevant thread, this seemed the best one to post in. Sorry if this is wrong or I’ve overlooked some site rules or etiquette on here.

Edit: Sorry. I was looking in the wrong Index, and didn’t see there was a ‘Canon’ section in General Star Wars Discussion.

Well, they added Gungans into the end scene of Return of the Jedi for the 2004 Special Edition. It is pleasing to see Tom Veitch getting some recognition, and “nods” to his work also featured in modern Star Wars.

His and Kevin Anderson’s work for Tales of the Jedi really gave us all the engaging backstory for much of the Sith and that beguiling early Star Wars era history.

I hadn’t realised that they had such a free reign with the project, and had feedback from George on it.

Yet they and the illustrators, had to send off their work to be ‘okayed’ by George, before going to print:

<strong>Star Wars: Visions</strong> (animated short films) - a general discussion thread - * <strong>SPOILERS</strong> *
Time

Yeah, The Duel was standout for me from Season 1 as well. So much that I was hoping for a mini-series or a sequel.

I really enjoyed this Season 2 of Visions, with the studios willing to take risks with their stories and go down darker routes than expected, which is always refreshing to see. I loved the contrasting styles of each episode, and hope we’ll see a return for some of the characters in other stories; animation, live-action or comic/book form.

Sith, The Pit, Journey to the Dark Head, and The Bandits of Golak were standouts for me, although I’d happily watch all of them from Season 2 again.

Can’t wait for Season 3. Heard some talk about puppets maybe being included for Season 3, if that is the case, I hope we see Henson Productions, maybe even Frank Oz, get a crack at doing their own short Star Wars story.

Prequels or Sequels; Which do you prefer - and why?
Time

The Sequels for me too. For much of the same reasons given on the previous page by others here.

They are just more fun movies to watch, that doesn’t make them actually fun to watch, but they are more fun to watch than the Prequels. The story is obviously unplanned as a Trilogy when you get to TROS, yet overall it is simply more engaging a Trilogy overall. With a feel and tone more in line with the OT - and unlike the Prequels, the Sequels don’t go out of its way to have baffling discrepancies and contradictions to the OT films.

And thankfully nobody thought the Original Trilogy should be changed further to make it fit in more with a new later Trilogy! lol That small but growing number of toxic and abusive Prequel fans really put those Special Edition fanatics from years ago to shame.

With better cinematography and settings, better writing overall, more energy throughout, better acting, more relatable characters with believable choices and actions, set design with better use of CGI and blending in with the sets, better editing (TROS ‘breakneck’ feeling apart). It had grit, tone, atmosphere, and actual stakes. Four things the Prequels sorely lacked. As well as featuring the OT main three characters, as disappointing as it was not to have all three together on screen at the same time, one last time.

I wouldn’t watch either Trilogy given the choice. For me, Andor, Visions, Rogue One, Solo (Han Shoots First!), and Bad Batch are all more preferable and more enjoyable to watch.

'Authentic screen-used “Star Wars” props, masks, weapons, models and costumes are some of the most prized mementos in the entire collector kingdom, and the sky’s often the limit for bids dropped for the final hammer price in major Hollywood memorabilia auctions.

“Star Wars” fanatics with deep pockets, or recent lottery winners, might want to check out Propstore’s upcoming live event featuring more than 1,400 pieces of rare and valuable film and TV memorabilia, which happens June 28 to June 30 in Los Angeles. One of the marquee items crossing the auction block from a galaxy far, far away is Princess Leia’s (Carrie Fisher) Ceremonial Dress Costume from “Star Wars: A New Hope.”

The certified screen-and-photo matched Ceremonial Dress Costume was worn by Fisher in the classic 1977 sci-fi film’s climactic medal presentation scene in the vast hall inside the rebel base on Yavin IV following the obliteration of the Death Star by Luke Skywalker in his trusty X-wing starfighter. Pre-sale estimates for the elegant white garment are currently running between $1 million and $2 million.

Unpopular Opinion Thread

Spartacus01 said:

I don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I’ll expose it regardless.

I don’t think that the less relatability of the PT characters is due to the way the characters are written, but simply to the acting. For example, I live in Italy, and the Italian dubbing is much more dynamic than the original acting. It’s less flat, and as a result the characters seem more human. In fact, I have never had any problem empathizing with the PT characters, precisely because the Italian dubbing is more dynamic and human, and therefore it conveys different sensations than the original acting, to the point that many of the lines that are considered cringe in the English-speaking world sound perfectly natural in the Italian dubbing.

To prove my point, here there are some scenes from The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith in my native language:

As you can see, the acting is much more dynamic here than in the original version.

I can sort of understand why George Lucas chose a flatter, less emphatic type of acting, but it affected the films in the long run.

I do not think that is an unpopular opinion, but it certainly an interesting one.

Personally, I think it is similar in other language dubs too. The non-English versions that I have seen usually have more energy and flow to them, in delivery of the lines, and also in conversation with their counterparts in scenes. It flows more naturally than the original English language delivery. Almost like a fan editor may choose or prefer when trying to bring more emotion, energy, more intensity to some PT scenes.

Although I do not think it was something George chose to for the PT (‘flatter, less emphatic type of acting’), I think it was part of his lack of direction or care to attention for dialogue heavy scenes. I think it is something he or his highly skilled editing team in the OT fixed in post/in the edit. In the Prequels that editing team (and ‘the heart’ or emotion from Marcia) was not there, and it could not be fixed, with many scenes appearing stilted, stiff or just plain flat. Maybe more “Do it again one more time. But faster, more intense” from George on set was needed?

It would be interesting exercise to see English voice actors (or impersonators), maybe even the original PT actors redubbing the PT now, but with more emotion, flow and energy, to see if that improves the PT films overall, and how much by.

Heir to the Empire Trilogy. A General Discussion
Time

I’m a little apprehensive on how they are going to redo, or riff on, Heir To The Empire for the end of the Mandoverse and ‘climactic story event’ that will probably be Dave Filoni’s New Republic theatrical film.

Riffing on the EU is something they seem to do quite a bit since the Prequel films, to varying degrees, but this feels like a big step re-treading and re-working something so big, loved and respected from the books.

I can see myself having to separating the two HTTEs, in my own head-canon, if they screw this up.

High Republic setting general discussion
Time

I am a little surprised there hasn’t been more on-screen content for the High Republic, be it some episodes in ‘Visions’ or in ‘Tales Of The Jedi’, or as other have suggested on here, its own ‘Galaxy of Adventures’ style animated series?

So far, it is ‘The Acolyte’ series, and ‘Eclipse’ game, both still to be released. And the ‘Young Jedi Adventures’ animated series for younger children. Which is a bit lacking overall, for promoting awareness and interest for such a promising and vast publishing project.

Talking of Young Jedi Adventures, it is not for me, and obviously aimed at young children or pre-schoolers, but may also appeal to some core High Republic readers and fans?:

<em><strong>ANDOR</strong></em> - Disney+ Series - A General Discussion Thread
Time

Disney’s “For Your Consideration” website for Andor:-

https://debut.disney.com/fyc/twds/series_fyc/andor-202206301429?tab=episodes

Unfortunately there are no scripts and concept art on that website. Maybe the Andor website that Tony Gilroy talked about creating, and putting up the scripts and concept art, will be on a different site? Or perhaps will be added later?
