Nice interview with Gary Kurtz to re-visit! (IGN interview in 2002)
Time
This is the Kurtz interview I've been dying to read. All the right questions are asked and now we get a better sense about Lucas that explains why the PT has gone the way it did.

Here's what I get from the interview:

Lucas is a quiet, shy, introvert documentary filmmaker who is used to doing everything himself, therefore if things don't turn out exactly the way he wants them to, then he thinks something is wrong. Compromise is what a film is all about, Kurtz says so himself.

When SW came out, it was the right movie at the right time under the right circumstances. It became more successful than anyone could possibly have imagined. The success blindsided him, but he is lucky to have more control than most filmmakers do.

With the success and money that SW brought.....not to mention the stress (see Empire Of Dreams), Lucas decided that he was gonna hire people to do it his way while at the same time, set up and reorganize Lucasfilm and ILM to accomodate.

ESB turned out waaaaaaaaay better than Lucas had thought and he WAS NOT responsible for it. It was Kirshner, Jim Henson and those 3 writers who made ESB as good as it was. I think this scared Lucas.....other people doing it better than him would make him scared and defensive cuz his control of the whole thing was threatened.

After ESB, Raiders comes out and Lucas somehow becomes convinced that audiences just want a cheap thrill. So he's determined to make Jedi that way. Kutz disagrees and takes off. Also at the same time, Hollywood was coming down on Lucas (see Empire Of Dreams again) and I believe that this is jealousy over Lucas' success. And also, his personal life seems to be falling apart (Empire Of Dreams again)....so I think he just wanted to be done with it. He did a quick and easy job on Jedi...hired all the people who he could control and just did it to be done with it.

And that attitude has carried over to the prequels.....he's doing these just to be done with the whole thing....and it shows in the story.

Bottom line....success killed Lucas. He got the fame, the glory, the money and he just let the quality go. It's happened to so many that it's really not that surprising either.

The End Of Star Wars - What to do now?
Time
Hey there!!!

Now that the last episode is out and the whole thing is pretty much over...except for the upcoming TV shows...what are you guys going to do?

Me....I'm really not too sure. I'm somewhat dissappointed with the state of things. The prequels, while good, did not fill the void IMHO and it looks like we will never get the OOT on DVD....so I'm thinking about jumping off the SW bandwagon for good.

But...

I'm incredibly conflicted about this cuz SW is such a big part of my life.....I've never known a time without it and it's got a special place in the heart, ya know...it's just all the crap with the prequels, the EU, the SEs....it's all left a bad taste in my mouth.

What are you guys gonna do? Keep up with it or just move on?

That's twice he's mentioned porn.....is he trying to tell us something about himself. It's okay dude....watching lesbians insert multiple objects in multiple orifices is perfectly okay....no need to feel guilty about it and take it out on the geeks...

Fabulous actors so completely drained of nuance and character you are left wishing Obi Wan would shoot heroin and dive into a toilet and have a deformed religious experience, and that Neeson might veer off and start asking Princess Amidala what her favorite sexual position is and how many orgasms she has in a month and what she really thinks about when she sees Vader's throbbing red lightsaber.

Actually....that sounds like a great fan film idea....

Quote

Harrison Ford carried the first three movies, period. Carrie Fisher was amusing enough, the droids were cute and infinitely annoying, James Earl Jones' Vader voice work was nearly a character unto itself.

Right, right, wrong, right.....the person who wrote this is infinitely more annoying than those droids....at least the droids serve a purpose...

Despite all those blogs and articles insisting SW is some sort of modern iteration of "Crime and Punishment" crossed with "Dr. Spock's Guide to Parenting," there is little of true intellectual substance to speak of in any of the SW flicks, and say what you will about old-time '60s radical Lucas' commendable desire to criticize current rabid right-wing ideology via his simple good/evil allegories, the overarching plot of SW is so basic and the execution so orthodox, you might as well be watching "The Bad News Bears," stoned. It's true.

Watching a movie about a bunch of kids playing baseball while stoned......hmmmm......can't you think of a better movie to watch while stoned....no sense wasting some good reefer on that movie....

Quote

Ten years of crappy CGI and 10 years of lumpy stiff acting and 28 years of waiting and you watch "Sith" where only the last 30 minutes really finds any sort of cinematic footing, and after all that screaming and all the cheeseball animation and all the slaughtered Jedis and the stilted, lifeless dialogue and heavy Vader wheezing and Yoda's irritating speech impediment, where do we finally end up at the end of Episode III? That's right: 1977. And who the hell wants to be back there?

I would like to be back in 1977....I can relive the whole thing and be twice as annoying...just to piss this guy off.

The "Star Wars" films, each and every one of them and it feels like there are about 127 of them now, they remain, always and forever, movies for anxious, easily stupefied 10-ear-old boys.

Great Idea For DVD Disk Art
Time
Hey there!!!

I have a great idea that maybe you totally awesome graphic designers can make a reality. The work you guys do for the DVD cover is phenomenal!!!

What I would like to see is some new DVD disk art. First, if you have the official DVD release of Episode 1: The Phantom Menace....pull out the first disk...
See how the disk is Darth Maul's face taking up the whole thing? It would really, really, really be awesome if one of you talented individuals could do disk art for the
rest of the saga just like that and follow this scheme:

Episode 1: Leave this exactly like the official one we already have.
Episode 2: Have Jango Fett's face (or you could do a Clone Trooper - then you would have to do Boba's face on Episode 6 then)
Episode 3: Have General Grievous' face
Episode 4: Do a Stormtrooper face
Episode 5: Darth Vader face
Episode 6: Jabba face (or Boba Fett, that is if you do a Clone Trooper for Episode 2)

Keep the STAR WARS and the episode roman numeral the same as well as the title all in the same place. Basically, take that Episode 1 Disk 1 Darth Mail face disk and do the exact same thing for the other 5 movies but changing the face.

This would be the ultimate matching disk art set. I seriously thought Lucas was going to follow with this on all the films, but that was crushed when I saw the Episode 2 disk when it was released. This has been on my mind ever since...

Anyone up for taking a crack at it.....I would bow to your greatness if you could do it!!!

Dude.....just shut the fuck up and get out there and see it. You know you want to.....we know you want to......just do it.

At this point, it's pointless to blame the PT on what he did to the OT. No sense in missing out on the story cuz of this.

Believe me....you will feel better......and I want you to see it.....cuz you JUST SHOULD!!!

My review of Episode III (minor, minor spoilers)
Time
Got back from the movie a little while ago.

All I got to say is WOW!!!!

That movie was absolutely incredible!!!

There was some cringe moments, but nothing really near Eps 1 and 2. There are some gray areas for me that I will not go into as another viewing may clear them up. The movie is just one roller coaster ride. There are practically no breathers. The pace is unrelenting. No time was given at all the absorb what was going on. Just went from one thing to the next.

Everything happened as it should. The pace did seem to upset some of the stuff that happens, but it's nothing that major. I think with time this one may be considered the best. It is dark as hell and definitely has some the most lost limbs of any Star Wars film yet.

My faith is restored......now if only we can get the unmolested OT.....all sins will be forgiven, George. I'm proud of you, man......you didn't fuck this one up!!!

Editing LDs ?????
Time
I was just wondering cuz I was on ebay and looking at the laserdisc of the OT and I wanted to ask here if it can be done. I really don't want to mess with it that deeply, so I will be just using my VHSs. The quality is still pretty good for me.

BTW, MeBeJedi....I'm all set up to copy the VHS to DVD using the 3 hour mode we were talking about in my other thread. I just need to do it and then I will post the result for you and everyone else.

I just need to find the time!!! Why aren't there 34 hours in a day?!?!?! WAIT!!! THEN WE'D HAVE TO WORK LONGER!!!!! BAD IDEA!!!! FORGET I SAID ANYTHING!!!

Editing LDs ?????
Time
Okay....I have a quick question.

I have a DVD Recorder that has a three hour recording mode. If I record all of the LDs of the first Star Wars movie onto one DVD, I would end up with those blank spots where I paused recording to flip/change the disk.

Is there a way to edit those blank spots out and make the recording ABSOLUTELY SEAMLESS in terms of both audio and video?

Are you sure that the questioners were not hired by management to snowball Lucas, and that they closed the line down because the rest of the people actually happened to be real fans?

No, all of us were fans from out of the crowd. Definitely now a set-up Q&A...

I'm surprised Lucas did this. I figured he would be too chicken shit to do it cuz someone would get up there and knock him for some of the things he's done.

I sure as hell was. No fucking way was I gonna pass that opportunity up. And there was a million other really good questions I wanted to ask about all kinds of things....
but I would have asked about the OT cuz this whole original version stuff runs very deep with me....and he needed to be TOLD by a fan that what he's done isn't right.

Did any fans lambast him over his refusal to release the original trilogy on dvd? Somehow I doubt it.

I was going to......but they closed the question line when I was about 2 people away.

I was going to let him have it too over this issue. Everyone is so nice to celebrities and they never ask the tough questions. I was going to make it so damn crystal clear that I wanted those versions and just how much they meant to me. I was even going to tell him that I didn't care about his changes and that he could change it to Greedo shooting, missing and killing himself....I don't give a flying fuck as long as he makes the originals available too.

The show I was at was last I'm pretty sure. When we got out, it was just past 10:30 if that helps.

Why do I not believe Lucass about not releasing a HD DVD version? When the next gen HD-DVD players finally hit the market, you don't think he'll want to push the digital technology even further? I can believe him not releasing an "archival" set since he hates the OT that we all love though.

To be honest, I have totally given up hope we'll ever get these versions in any format. I think it really all comes down to the 6 film box set and how it is done. If it's as comprehensive as say...the Matrix set (don't have it, but have read the specs and it sounds like they hit it all with 10 disks covering 3 films) and doesn't include the original versions, then I would say that all hope is gone and we are all thoroughly fucked.

Quote

2. Not a good feeling he'll be writing and directing the TV show. What kind of show doesn't have main characters?

Lucas didn't say that he was going to write or direct. All he said was that he was going to get it started and then he would hand it over to someone else to do while he moved on to other non-SW projects. I assume that he will at least write some of the stuff. He also mentioned that it would be like the Young Indy show. Whatever the hell that means is your guess and mine. As for the main characters...I don't know what he's going to do. The only other thing I've heard him say at these Q&A sessions is that there is a really good idea floating around right now that he thinks will work out great.

Since Indiana Jones just popped in my mind...Lucas did say something about the next Indy lick too. One of the dudes ahead of me got up to the mike and asked when we were going to see the Man In The Hat again.....and the whole place just lit up. Lucas responded by saying that he just received the new script the day before and he was going to read it over the weekend and talk to Spielberg on Monday. So, that looks like it's still on. Wonder how they'll fuck that up, huh?

I'm Going To Celebration 3...
Time
Well guys!!! I am back!!! And what a clusterfuck this convention was...

Check out the message boards on the official site and theforce.net for more details on that...
All I can say is that if Lucas hadn't been there and I hadn't got to see him, I would have been extremely pissed!!!

Now....on to the Lucas thing...

I did get in to see one of the presentations. There were 3 of them and I got in the last one. It turned out that Lucas WAS INDEED talking questions from the audience.
There was a line forming up at the front by the stage. Needless to say, I made a friggin' beeline for that line and got into it. I was all set up and ready to lay the question on Lucas himself. Unfortunately, the closed the Q&A session when I was just 2 people away from asking it. To say I am disappointed is beyond description. I WAS SOOOOOO CLOSE I COULD MOTHERFUCKING TASTE IT!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some interesting tidbits though....

1. They appeared to be screening questions. Some girl was at the front of the line (probably a Lucasfilm rep) and she was talking to the person at the front of the line. Methinks they were checking to see what everyone was asking. No one got refused, but all of the questions asked were pretty bland anyway.

2. Lucas revealed that he would be doing a TV series that happens between Eps 3 and 4. It will not focus on main characters. If the show works out, they may consider doing a show on the Knights Of The Old Republic era. They are going to continue the Clone Wars cartoons as a 30 minute program.

3. Some kid who was a total idiot got up there and started asking some question about Episode 3 that contained a spoiler. The kid got booed pretty bad. It was actually funny to me. That twit stormed off though when his question didn't get answered. He's probably traumatized!!!

4. The most interesting news to you guys is that there will be a 6 film box set of the entire saga.....possibly with an extra disk of deleted scenes from the original trilogy. An immediate question is if the bonus material in this set will match what's been released so far with the prequel DVDs and the OT DVD set. I'm starting to hate hearing about anything like this cuz it jsut raises more damn questions than it answers....

5. THE THING THAT WILL COME AS A RELIEF TO MANY OF US. LUCAS SAYS THAT THERE WILL BE NO MORE TINKERING WITH THE OT. HE IS HAPPY WITH IT THE WAY IT IS AS THE SEs. So the madness is somewhat over......I think.

6. Also, there will be NO high definition "archival" edition of the saga in 2007. Don't know what this edition was about, but whatever it is...it is NOT happening.

I'm sorry, guys!!! I was so close it hurt. When I saw that they might be screening questions, I came up with a question asking about an ultimate definitive DVD box set of the whole saga and would have asked about including the original versions. That was where I was gonna launch into my whole rant about it.

On the other hand, I have to say that Lucas is a pretty nice guy. He was pretty cool, but seemed kind of nervous about being in front of a crowd like that. I'm still glad I saw him and it made this somewhat dismal convention a hell of a lot better.

So....I guess we can all continue on our own preservation projects.....cuz I am now absolutely and firmly convinced that we are NEVER going to see those versions as an official release ever again.

I'm Going To Celebration 3...
Time
Well people...Celebration 3 is this weekend and I will be attending. In case no one has heard, the man himself is going to be there. George is supposed to be doing some kind of Q&A. Naturally, if I get the mike and can ask a question, I'm going to ask about the Original Versions of the OT being on DVD someday. I think I already know the answer he will give, so I will be forced to convey how annoyed and irritated I am over this whole issue...in the kindest of words, of course. That is sarcasm, by the way.

So, if any of you hear about some crazed fan that asked Lucas a question, then threw down on Lucas, got arrested and kicked out of the convention...that would be me!!!

Seriously though, if I do get the opportunity, I damn sure am gonna ask about that. It sounds like the best chance at voicing our feelings about this issue to Lucas himself without any go-betweens.

BUT...for some reason, I think this Q&A session is gonna be rigged. I don't think they are going to be taking question directly from the crowd. I just can't see Lucas facing the fans that "naked". Simply cuz there are fans out there who want to tear him a new asshole for the SEs and the PT.

But I'm hoping....and if I get the chance, I will make my displeasure very well known!!!

Wish me luck....cuz I would even trade anything just to get to ask that question and tell the ass how I feel about those old versions.

Dude, it's just a joke. 95% of the posts here?!?!?! What are you saying? I find this BBS to be one of the more intelligent and mature boards out there...especially on the subject of Star Wars.

Quote

I didn't over-react.

Biz...you over-reacted. Take it easy. Here....have a cookiee!!!

And now....back to the thread....I was suggesting that Lucas just literally start from scratch with the original footage from the principle photograpy. What he's doing now is just taking what was finished back then and reworking it, changing it, COUGH(screwing it up)COUGH and enhancing it. I say why not just go back to the point where you just finished principle photograpy and you hand it over to ILM for post production. This is essentially making almost a brand new movie with all new effects from start to finish except you're working with principle photograpy footage that's 30 years old. Only drawback is you can't go back and do pick-ups for the most part.

Info Wanted: My Own Preservation...

When I get to it, I'm gonna record just the movie at the 3 hour setting and then see how big the VOBs are. If they come out to less than the 4.7 GB capacity, then I should be able to import it into DVD-Lab and make my menus and then burn it right back onto disk without any problems. But I'm curious to know if those VOBs will be less than 4.7.....

Thanks for all your help, MeBeJedi!!!!

You are a lifesaver!!!!

I think it's time to just simply do it and then see what happens....there are still plenty of options if it doesn't work.

Info Wanted: My Own Preservation...
Time
Hey MeBeJedi.....I have anothe question for you concerning this project of mine....

Now I said I was going to copy the VHS tapes to DVD with a Sony DVD Recorder, right?

Well, the recorder is capable of recording different time intervals.....there's a setting for 2 or 3 or 4 hours.
Since the SW movies are just a bit over 2 hours, I would like to record them at the 3 hour setting and then stick in the trailers also.

My question is this: When I import the VOB files into DVD-Lab...will there be a problem since there is actually 3 hours of recording time, but only 2 hours of space on the DVD? Won't that send up a red flag somewhere?

I haven't tried it yet, but I was thinking about it and wondered if that would be a problem.
I don't think it would be because there is 3 hours of recording time (at a slightly lesser quality than shorter recording times), but the VOB files take up the same file space as a 2 hour recording would.

Please let me know what you think.....or if you need further clarification. This might be a bit confusing.
