What do you LIKE about the EU?
Time

Yeah, that looks like it. I bought them issue by issue when they first came out, and years later I bought a trade paperback with the first couple of story arcs in it. Keep in mind, I was around twelve or thirteen when these things were coming out and haven't read them in adulthood so I am not sure if you would like them, of even if I would like them if I only discovered them today, but I found them a lot of fun and my original screen name, C-3PX, was actually the name of one of the characters (a protocol droid reprogrammed to be an assassin).

I have enough love for them that I'd say give them a try, looks like the omnibus can be purchased from amazon for under $5, so you wouldn't have much to lose. While you're at it, if you can get your hands on this one shot comic by Dark Horse called "Tales from Mos Eisley" (doesn't resemble the later EU book of the same name), it is pretty cool. Just a collection of a few random short stories, I loved them because, again, they have nothing to do with the grander scheme of things in the galaxy, just individuals in their own person small plights taking place in the SW universe.

And at the risk of getting flamed by at least one previous poster: I'm glad the EU re-appropriated Boba Fett and made him badass again after his lame inclusion and death in Jedi.

I actually really enjoyed the Boba Fett comics (Death, Lies, And Treachery, not sure if any new stuff has been released since then). I liked following the exploits of Boba Fett as kind of private eye with high tech gadgets (think Batman but in it for the money). I know a lot of fans cringe at that kind of stuff, but I really enjoyed it. I liked seeing smaller corners of the SW universe where everything wasn't high stakes, the Force, magical/scientifically explainable powers, and super weapons with the ability to destroy planets.

I also really liked the Dark Horse Droids comic series. Again, seems silly following the adventures of two dumb Droids. But I liked the low stakes smaller corners of the galaxy feel they had two them. The dangers they were in was always really minor things on the grand scale. It was refreshing to see parts of the SW universe that don't really matter and to read about things like pirates capturing a luxury liner, or an arms dealing forcing his robots to build weapons for him.

My issue is not with serious discussion, but rather with the premise that Leia is racist.  That's what I find funny.

That is good. I respect your opinion, and I am pretty sure Ray respects your opinion as well. The problem is you RESTATE IT EVERY THIRD POST or so.

We get it. You think it is a silly thing to talk about.

Video Games - a general discussion thread

You mean Star Wars: Dark Forces III: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast? Yeah, that is a fun game. I actually also rather liked Star Wars: Dark Forces IV: Jedi Knight III: Jedi Outcast II: Jedi Academy.*    ;)

Though it didn't go over as well as SWDF3JK2JO, I thought it had a lot of really fun new elements to it. Like the tauntauns, wampas, sandworms, and some other unique things I am probably forgetting. As much as I hate the prequels, one thing about them I always liked was the Jedi Master and Padawan thing, so I was actually pleased to see it show up in this game in the post-ROTJ EU setting. I also liked the branching mission system. Sadly, I never actually got to finish it, I reached a level that was too much for my computer and would always cause the game to crash. By the time I got a new computer I had kind of forgotten about it.

I think there is a version for the original Xbox, maybe it is backwards compatible with the 360. If so, I ought to try to find a copy.

You know you've been watching the OT too much when you start debating anti-Wookiee racism.

This is kind of funny. In my profession we can discuss written literature all day long and over analyze motives of characters and intentions of writers until we are blue in the face and people generally see that sort of crap as a legitimate intellectual exercise and take it quite seriously. Do it to a film (or worse a sci-fi film!) and suddenly you are on the level of a nerdy loser who has only seen the nude female form in the Japanese cartoons that he beats off to bi-daily in his parents' basement where he resides.

It is just a movie. God forbid anyone think too hard about the contents of it. Must remain shallow and turn off brain when experience tv, movies, or internets... No wonder crap like Transformers steal the box office...

Wow, people really need to relax if they think Leia is being racist.

Actually, the people who need to relax are the "OMFG!!!!!! Could you fan boyz get any more stupider arging about racisms in star warz, lolz @ this thread!!!!!1. Wookies arn't real, lolz!!!!" that need to calm the hell down and relax.

I am the one who made the biggest point about Leia and the "walking carpet" comment, and I was hardly worked up about it and have no need to relax. My point was a very minor one, and it was more about Lucas' writing and something I felt was an inconsistency in her character. Wasn't accusing Leia of being racist or making a cry for Wookie rights. Just an opinion anyway. Nothing more than that. I don't know why some of you are so amused by this. It isn't really any dumber than any of the other crap we talk about in the General SW section all the time.

Used to be able to talk about Star Wars (which, quite frankly, almost any in universe related SW discussion is absolutely retarded to talk about) and have some amusing conversations here. Obviously unless we are talking about how shit the SE or PT is, there really is no point even trying to post anything in this section.

Doctor Who

SPOILERS BELOW:

I really like Neil Gaiman. American Gods was one of the most enjoyable reads I've experienced in a while and his children's books are absolutely fantastic. I did really enjoy his episode for the most part, but the idea of the TARDIS's soul going into a human struck me as kind of silly. I think that episode written by anyone but Gaiman could have been really awful.

Leia's "Walking carpet" line grates on me. So does "I'd just as soon kiss a Wookie!". What if Chewie was African? Would she say "Would somebody get this black guy outta my way?" and "I'd just as soon kiss an 'S'-word*!" ? It may all seem silly to some, but it bugs me.

Thank you! By some of the other comments, I was thinking everyone thought I was a bit nuts. Glad to see I am not alone.

Also,  to whoever said that Leia is a stuck up snob in SW, I disagree. She's a military leader who's mostly only posing as royalty to disguise her real motives. She's been captured and tortured and now she's being rescued by some guys who don't know what the hell they're doing. I'd be grumpy to.

That was me. I guess that is a pretty fair take on the situation.

I don't think the whole thing was pointless...but obviously you completely missed the point. Yay for you! Big pat on the back.

I never made any claim that Leia said the "laugh it up fuzzball" line, I just said that I thought it was humorous when I was a kid, along with Leia's walking carpet line. Now I don't fine either one very funny. It is childish humor. At any rate, the fuzzball line is perfectly in place for Han's character, he doesn't seem the types who chokes on non PC language, and Chewie is his best friend so it is acceptable.

And my argument stands, Leia's derogatory comment towards Wookies is very out of character for what Lucas ultimately made her character to be. It is more evidence of how extreme the changes to the over all universe became with each additional film.

CDC Zombie Apocalypse article
Time

That is actually extremely clever. I did the same thing with my old room mate to make him feel cooler about having all my survival stuff in the hall closet (though it was kind of sad that calling my stash "zombie apocalypse survival supplies" instead of "nuclear disaster or other major emergency survival supplies" got him to stop smirking, rolling his eyes, and calling me needlessly paranoid and actually excited enough to go along with it).

Obviously what the CDC is doing here is using the popular sensation of zombies to promote preparedness in the event of any kind of an emergency. And it is a brilliant idea. People tend to be scared so much by this sort of stuff, that they don't want to even think about it. The idea that disaster could strike and things could fall apart for a while is so frightening, from my experience a lot of people would rather just laugh and say that you're being ridiculous for even suggesting the possibility than to consider taking a minimal step to prepare. People don't like to think that someday when you click that light switch, lights won't come on. Or when you turn the tap, clean potable water won't pour out.

As I discovered first hand from my former room mate, posing it as preparedness for a potential zombie apocalypse makes it less real. Puts it in an exciting fantasy setting. While my suggestion of zombies should have been the point he began rolling his eyes at me and sniggering, instead it made him think it was a really fun idea to have all these gallons of extra water and other crap taking up ridiculous amounts of space in the closet and to tell people it was our zombocalypse survival gear. He isn't a stupid person and he obviously didn't really think we were preparing for an event that would cause the dead to come back and eat us, I just think staging our survival stash as in the event of zombies made it way less frightening to him than the real (and very probable) scenarios that I was listing, and easier for him to cope with and get into.

Maybe this CDC blog post will get just a few zombie fans to invest some storage space to a decent supply of water and other important things to have stashed in the event of an emergency. If so, then it served its purpose well.
