Is Part 3 of Anything Ever Good?

Half Life 2: Episode 3

SCREW YOU, XHONZI!!!!

I actually really liked Back to the Future III. The first two already went over the parents in the past and kids in the future thing, three needed to do something entirely different and I think what they came up with was a lot of fun. I watched that movie a million times as a kid and loved it, so maybe I am more willing to give it a bit of a pass because of that.

I also love Alien 3... maybe I like it even more than Aliens... I really like the atmosphere of the film. I do wish they would have gone with the original space monks idea, that whole concept sounded extremely cool; alas, they made what they did and I appreciate it for what it is. I am just glad they never went on to make anymore Alien sequels. Three is the perfect number for them, and I am really happy there are no plans to make anymore. If they ever decide to make a fourth or maybe a spin-off series crossing-over with another franchise or something crazy like that it would be a really big mistake.

And, uh, I kind of liked the third Anne of Green Gables movie...

Really, you can ignore all the Xmen films that came before and pretend this is the first. It's almost like a reboot ala Star Trek 2009.

As it stands it is a better movie than all of the others. There are some slight inconsistencies but also a few nods and winks to the other films.

Agreed. I loved it. I liked the first X-Men film quite a bit actually; the second one was okayish but also kind of awful; the third was just plain awful, though I really liked the cast in all of them.

But this new one was really good. Though to be honest, I didn't feel some characters were casted as well, and I kind of hated how the end sets up all the pieces neatly so we can flash forward many years to the first X-Men film. Wouldn't have hurt to leave room for sequels.

I did like how they mostly kept continuity with the originals too. It was like a reboot, only with 50 times the continuity as Star Wars and its prequels.

Hehehe, I want Half-Life 3 so bad... I might actually be willing to reach into your pants to get it... but I'd have to be really sure it was in there first....

Oh, and the troll comment was meant in the most loving way possible. I was actually surprised to look back at it and see I didn't put I winky after it, I thought I had.

Holy crap, you started a thread!

Yep. And our two resident trolls reminded me why I never do that.

Double standards.

C3PX, I love you, but sometimes....

Oh, who am I kidding, I love you all the time.  And I would have splitscreened with you and x-man if you would have been around.

Awww, I love you too.

And I am very sorry we didn't get to splitscreen together. Sometimes at night, when I am alone, I imagine what it might have been like...

I am actually excited about this Halo thing.

I am also super excited about Resident Evil 4 coming to the 360 (and PS3) later this year. Meanwhile, other than BioShock Infinite (well over a year away), there really aren't any new games that have me excited. It is kind of weird I am looking forward to old games that I could actually play right now being re released in HD and with achievements. I just can't think of the last time anything mild blowing or truly unique has come out to make me look forward to new games; everything on the horizon is more or less more of the same.

The last several releases I have been really anxious for have been sequels that really were not that different than the ones before them. BioShock 2, Fallout New Vegas, Black Ops, Portal 2, Lego Star Wars III. The new Elder Scrolls looks impressive, but I am anticipating bugs and long load times.

I could use a PS2 remote with dongle... but my PS3 doesn't have PS2 ports. In fact, when I first took it out of the box I was pretty amazed at how few external feature the "It only does everything!!!1" machine had. While they keep adding USB ports to the 360, they seem to be doing the opposite with the PS3. I keep an external hard drive full of media plugged into the back of my 360, and was kind of disappointed to see the latest PS3 only has two USB ports and they are both in the front. They still work well enough, but having ugly USB cords hanging out the front of the system doesn't look the nicest.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Not as bad as I was expecting it to be.

Were you expecting it to jump of of the screen, raid your fridge, kick your dog, and give you herpes?

Cuz if that's the case, I agree with you. It wasn't THAT bad.

Agreed.

So very agreed.

Of course, I only saw the workprint without the special effects... and the only part I enjoyed about it was seeing the work in progress of an unfinished film. That was pretty interesting.

What I mean is, I get MS Points when they're on sale and save 20%-50%, which I can't do on PSN.

I've never managed to do that. I've always been able to find good deals on Xbox Live cards, but I've never managed to score a good deal on points cards. I do, however, almost always buy my stuff from Xbox Live when it is on sale though.

Where do you find these deals on MS points?

That is nice.  I have my both my ps3 and my 360 set up to stream mp3's from my media server

I have my 360 set up to stream movies and music from my Mac. But with the 360 you can't make playlists on the system unless the files are on the actual 360 hard drive, and the only way to pull that off is to rip them there directly. I've always wished I were able to toss a handful of whatever songs I am in the mood for at the moment into a playlist right there on the system without having to go create a playlist on my computer first. So that is definitely one thing I appreciate about the PS3 so far.

I've never noticed if I can play music in games on the PS3.  Can you do that?

Actually, I've just discovered that limitation. I am not 100% sure you can't listen to music while playing games (something I do fairly often, and the Xbox makes it really easy), but I was listening to music on it and opened up the PS Store and it immediately shut off my music. With the Xbox it will simply let you continue listening to whatever music you want in the background whether you're shopping or playing a game (it even pauses the music for cut scenes, which can be nice and annoying at the same time, depending on if you want to watch the cut scenes or not).

Looking forward to trying out the Blu-ray player. Unfortunately, my one and only Blu-ray is in storage in another part of the country. I've ordered seasons one and two of Life on Mars on BD, but it is an import from the UK, so I'll have to wait a while (region free, confirmed to work on US PS3s, and less than half the price of the region 1 DVD set!).

And PSN has no reason to apologize or give you anything for free because of the outage. It's a PRIVILEGE to have the service at all!

I'd rather pay for something, it gives the company a reason to keep it up.

I agree. But since free access to PSN is one of the PS3's major selling points, when someone pays $300+ for the system, part of what they feel they are paying for is the ability to go online and play Call of Duty (or whatever) with their friends whenever they feel like it.

The most important aspect of gaming to me these days is the social experience, so I agree with 005; I'd rather pay money for that portion of it, than have it be a privilege that I can just "deal with" when it goes down. If I didn't have LIVE on my Xbox, it would be useless to me. I have a hard time imagining Microsoft's service being down for six weeks over anything.

Why does Lucas even call it the Tragedy of Darth Vader? The goddamn prequels focus on Palpatine's political manipulations and his progression from senator to supreme chancellor to emperor more than Vader or any other character/event. The Saga is "The Rise and Fall of Palpatine" more than anything else.

As I read this post, Baba O'Riely by The Who inexplicably starts playing in the background in my head. Weird.

Yay, PSN is still back up!

http://uk.ibtimes.com/articles/156415/20110602/psn-sony-store-playstation-network-free-gifts-4-ps3-ps4.htm

Sony also confirmed in its blog post that despite the fact that some users were struggling to sign onto the service, it was still fixed and not an inherent problem with the new code.

The company blamed the sheer number of account holders trying to log on all at once as the reason certain users experienced problems accessing the store.

Wow, kind of makes me feel embarrassed for Sony. Tried playing around with it for a while yesterday and kept getting error codes. Came back later and still had the same problem. If that is fixed, then I am thrilled Sony provides such high quality services. Yay, PSN is free!... But if too many people log onto it at once apparently it is normal to kick you off or tell you you can't do anything on it. Why yes, I will be renewing my Xbox Live when it expires next month.

Still, seems kind of silly to have to wear a pair of stupid glasses just to watch a movie.

I, along with many other people, have to wear glasses to watch a regular movie, so i don't see the problem with the glasses

Hmm... who are these "people" you speak of?  ;)

As a non glasses wearing-person, I would have thought that people already wearing one pair of glasses wouldn't mind so much wearing two pair to watch a 3D movie, but these "people" seem to be the most violently opposed...

Whoa! Quote taken out of context. When I said it "seems kind of silly to have to wear a pair of stupid glasses just to watch a movie", I wasn't talking about 3D glasses, I was talking about 3D to 2D glasses. The idea I was trying to convey was that it would be silly to have to wear a pair of 3D to 2D glasses to go and watch a film at the cinema in 2D. Especially when you pay extra to see it in 3D.

I don't care one bit for 3D, I think it is gimmicky. It is honestly the only part I enjoyed of Avatar, so I am not going to say it isn't kind of fun to experience, but even by the end of that unnecessarily long movie the novelty had worn off for me. I wouldn't want to see every movie in 3D. But I think the requirement of 3D glasses to see the film in 3D is more than reasonable and don't understand why so many people complain about it.

And for the record, I am extremely near sighted. Without my contacts, my computer screen is just a blur of color. So I'd be one of those who need glasses just to watch any film... though, I actually don't even own a pair of glasses... Hmmm, has anyone ever thought of inventing 3D contact lenses?

There are a bunch of ways it could be done, but I still maintain that there is no reason you would want it to be done. Such a ride is essentially our version of a holodeck anyway. It is the closest think we can get to physically being in fantasy locations. It stands to reason most people going to such an attraction would want to be in the Star Trek world for the duration, not in some generic 1950's detective noir or role playing Sherlock Holmes. All the coolest features of a holodeck, being able to see anywhere or do anything you like, would be impossible to simulate. All the things my mind could come up with if someone asked, "What would you do if you had a real holodeck?" Are things that couldn't be done with a simulated one. You have to choose simulated "holodeck programs" that would appeal to a vast number of people, since the ride would require groups going through, and there really isn't much you could have them do in them.

I guess it would be cool if the ride were a simulated tour of a starship, "And here is our holodeck" as it changes settings a few times and the group moves on. But we are still dealing with 2D screens pretending to be an entire holographic settings. A bit lame.

You could make them just buy grabbing two pairs of sunglasses and popping and popping the lenses out and making one pair with two right eyes and one pair with two left eyes, right? Or am I over simplifying it?

That's definitely oversimplified. The lenses have to be polarized in a specific way, they're not simple sunglasses. And those 3D-2D glasses wouldn't work everywhere because for example one of the cinemas in my town uses active LCD glasses, (the same technology most 3D TVs use) so these 3D-2D glasses would be useless for that, the only thing that could help is an eye-patch ;-)

Oops, just caught this. I fear that post made me sound incredibly stupid thanks to a staggering number of typos (even for me) and accidentally using the word "sunglasses" when I intended to say "3D glasses". Silverwook mentioned "sunglasses" so that was obviously still on my brain; I intended to write "by grabbing two pairs of 3D glasses and popping the lenses out to make one pair with two right eyes and one pair with two left eyes, right? Or am I over simplifying it?"

Obviously the exercise of making a pair of sunglasses with two right eyes or two left eyes would be like doing nothing and quite ridiculous. But I am still under the impression a pair of polarized glasses with two of the same lenses would do the trick.
