Today's project: figure out how to get a fairly alarming quantity of blood out of the fabric exterior of a shoe. Any suggestions?

Depends on what type of blood. For example is it from cow or human? What body part did the blood come from? Is it thick or somewhat liquidy? Were there clots involved? ...

Blood type unknown. Human. Arm. Liquidy when it hit the shoe, dry by the time I got the chance to clean it up. No clots involved, totally gushing.

Don't worry, it wasn't my blood; I am fine. And actually it cleaned up really well, which is nice because it is an awesome pair of tennis shoes. I used cold water, soap, and a bit of saliva and it came right out. Probably helped that it was only a few hours old when I got to it too.

2012 Election Josiah Bartlet (D) vs. Leia Organa (R)
Time

I was making a joke about how silly the idea of wishing Josiah Bartlet was real is. Princess Leia was the most hyperbolic example I could think of at the time, but you seem to have taken my nomination serious since you asked for reason why (which is actually a really fun and intriguing idea, and why I made the thread). If I had said, "Mickey Mouse would make ten times the President Josiah Bartlet was", maybe my initial point would have been clearer.

The other day I walked into a coffee shop during an apparently very slow part of the day. As I approach the counter, the very cute and very bored looking barista behind the counter says, "Buy somethin' will ya?" I smile and ask, "Legend of Zelda?" She grins back "Yep". I order my coffee, we flirt a bit, and I leave.

It is awesome because we connected through a silly video game we both used to play as kids. A piece of our past we shared with one another, despite never having met before. If I hadn't gotten the reference, I would have just thought she was playfully pleading with me to buy something because business was slow and she was bored. That is the fun thing about references, they go over the heads of most, but occasionally score you some fun interaction with somebody else who is familiar with the reference.

Things like, "Beam me up Scotty" or "May the force be with you!" are lame as references because everybody, even those with only a vague idea of what Star Trek or Star Wars are about, know what they are references to, and will on occasion use them. And so it is with the internet, suddenly all references start to become like "May the force be with you!" Meaningless. Suddenly everything falls into the gross little category of "meme", tired old jokes that are told again and again and again and again and again and again and again only because someone once thought they were funny, and so therefore must be funny still.

Doctor Who
Time

Some dude posted this in the comments section of the toho-scope's link,

If Moffat had kept any sense about him last season, instead of blowing up the River Song story line to absurd proportions and making it unpalatable for future consumption, he could have gone with a 'young' River Song as the next companion. Imagine if season 6 hadn't featured River AT ALL, imagine if she wasn't the Pond's unlikely child and imagine if she'd retained her mystery. Imagine, then, her 'first' meeting with the Doctor as a very young woman, a student, with no knowledge of him whatsoever - and watch them have a battle of wits in the Tardis. THAT would have been a story line worth waiting for.

And I very much agree with it (except the battle of wits bit, that is stupid) . I have always really disliked River. She is obnoxious, and by far the worse thing about Smith-Who. The above idea would have fit continuity wise (prior to last season), and really provided the opportunity to make River a likeable character and to make sense of the relationship between her and the Doctor, as it is, it feels like he married her and is fond of her simply because she keeps telling him how much he loves her and how important she is to him. It has never really worked, Amy and Rory were such great companions, they made the whole rid past this train-wreck of a story arch bearable, but how much better would it have been without so much time wasted on the River Song BS.

Slumdog Millionaire - I really like Danny Boyle's directing style. The advertising for this film always struck me as really weird ("feel good movie of the year", for example, when it is actually quite depressing throughout). If I hadn't already been fond of Boyle, I admit I probably never would have watched it. The dance number during the credit sequence is extremely out of place too. The movie kind of leaves you in a certain state, then the nonsensical dance number pops up and destroys it. Very odd choice.

Cemetery Junction - Wow, hard to believe it was directed by Ricky Gervais. I was very impressed.

It is worse than that! It is like having someone who has never seen Star Wars and absolutely refuses to see anything with Star Wars in the title, then one day getting them to give in just this once and give it a shot and you go and waste that window of opportunity by excitedly tossing Attack of the Clones their direction and enthusiastically exclaiming "You're gonna love it!"

I'm not very fond of any of the Alien films...

Screw you, asshole!

Kidding.

But seriously, that makes me sad for some reason. One of my ex-girlfriends who was generally into some really great stuff and typically had great taste in films refused to watch Alien because "the aliens were gross" (which is funny, because when it came to violent imagery, simulated or real, that girl never so much as flinched). I told her she should just give the first one a chance and she admitted that one of her ex-boyfriends talked her into going to see Alien vs. Predator with him and that was the only chance she felt the series needed from her. What a dumbass, introducing her to the series via a horrible spinoff only a lobotomized individual could enjoy (apparently, he really liked it, go figure). Wow, I haven't spared a thought for this girl in ages, but am still bothered by this.

I'm not sure if I care to know where/how the aliens originated.

Wait, is that what it is about? I thought Scott said it has nothing to do with the xenomorphs and will not feature them. From what I understood, the only connection it was suppose to have to Alien was exploring the origins of the space jockey, which to me sounds kind of cool, a lot more interesting than Cameron's crappy sequel to the original or any of the shitty spin-offs (I do love Alien 3 though).

In an ocean of crappy movies hitting cinemas, I'm looking forward to Scott going back and doing something alien related, to me that is worth the price of admission.
