Seriously, Bingo? You just have to try to stir things up, don't you?

How?

Maybe I am mistaken.

It is just that Warbler leaves after an old issue that involved you and ABC is brought back up and mulled over, ABC reflects on things and apologizes before leaving the forum himself, and Warbler decides to come back. Warbler's post apologizing, trying to make things right, and saying he is back is the first post in this thread in days, all conflict is over, everything is good. Your response? "Die thread die".

It seems like the reasons for wanting this thread dead are all resolved and it is ready to start sinking on its own, why even bring it up or make a statement like that? And it is great news that Warbler is back. So that response of yours was more than a little puzzling.

Maybe I read too much into it, if so, sorry.

I think the first half of season two was pretty much a waste, but it did pick up a little in the second half, and it ended setting up a lot of potentially really cool things from the graphic novel.

Wow, I picked up the comic again and continued reading after about a year's break. It has got to be one of the most warped, twisted, sick, and disturbing pieces of literature I have ever read. I got bored with it and stopped reading it last year, turns out I stopped at a temporary slow point just before septic tank loads of fecal matter were violently launched at the air conditioner. Makes the TV series feel like something that belongs on PBS daytime tv.

Which Cut?

Anybody remember trying to see all the versions back years ago? You couldn't see anything besides the Director's Cut for years. I finally tracked down the original VHS of the International cut, popped it in, and readily said: WTF? Then I saw the broadcast version. Ugh!

I've had an LD rip of the International Cut since the early 2000's, then DigitalFreakNYC came out with his brilliant little multi disc set. I remember following his thread for a long time and getting my hands on that set as soon as he released it. Waiting for that set is what prompted me to make my own version picking and choosing the bits I liked best. I never liked the DC much, save for the nifty quick cut to the credits at the end. Perfect ending for the film, IMHO. Probably one of my favorite movie endings of all time.

A major theme of the film - one of the reasons I love it so much - is that the replicants, the individuals who are not human, turn out to be much more human than Deckard, the human whose job it is to hunt them down.  (That's part of why I like the "I'm sorry, Sebastian" line - it humanizes Roy a bit, which is part of the point of the movie.)

This also makes the Tyrell Corp.'s slogan more relevant and chilling - "More human than human."  It's true - Batty, an artificially-created being, is more human than Deckard, a human.

But all of that gets thrown out the window if Deckard's a replicant, too.  It destroys one of the core themes of the film, one of the themes I latched onto so strongly.

I was actually going to post something almost exactly like when I made my last post, but looked at my watch and realized I needed to run.

That is what the film has always meant to me. The "maybe Deckard is a replicant" idea has always felt a bit like an after thought that was shoved into the film to give it a heavy handed plot twist (and to make a nod at the book). Nothing else in the film seems to connect to or support the theme of Deckard being a replicant. It has always felt like a lose string tackily dangling off an otherwise almost perfect film to me.

It was the theme of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, and it worked very well in the book. But the book and the movie have very little in common beyond the setting, character names, and the basic plot outline of a bounty hunter sent to hunt down escaped rogue synthetic humans. Blade Runner kind of evolved its own philosophical questions independent of those of the book (more human than human, humans=cold, lonely, lifeless, disinterested; replicants=emotional, tight bonds, full of life and desire). I think adding in the the books philosophical questions, which were basically, "do androids dream of electric sheep?" (Deckard, a man living in a society where the type of robotic animal you own is a status symbol and longs to have one better than the one he has, is thrown for a loop when an android he is about to kill desires a painting, which among other things, causes him to begin to doubt his humanity), just muddled things and distracted from the relevancy of the "more human than human" theme.

I agree about the unicorn scene too. The replicant idea kind of ruins the whole film for me.

I've heard it argued that the origami unicorn at the end doesn't make sense without the unicorn dream sequence, but prior to anyone ever seeing the unicern scene in the DC, we saw Deckard pick up the origami unicorn Gaff left and we simply assume it means Gaff has been there and let Rachel live.

I am so glad to see Blade Runner explained. I haven't seen any version, and the confusion was not helping. Looks like I need to see the special version of Aliens... and I guess I know how to approach Alien3 now.

Still no idea what to do with A:R, and I haven't seen it.

1. Yeah, I always recommend the Final Cut of Blade Runner to people who've never seen it.  I have my (very minor) problems with it, and some people *hate* the new color timing, but I still think it's the best available version, followed by the '92 Director's Cut.  But the Final Cut just flows better, since the editing was tightened up to accommodate the loss of narration.

I approve of Ash's recommendation of the final cut.

Though I've considered Blade Runner one of my favorite films for quite some time, I have never managed to buckle down which one was my preferred version. I've always enjoyed the international cut the most, but I much preferred the "director" cut's ending. Years ago I made myself a fan edit, splicing the DC ending to the international cut and I've just kind of gone with that since. The Final Cut is pretty good, it has most of my favorite shots in it. A few things I haven't quite warmed up to about it yet, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it as the place for a new comer to begin at.

3. Definitely get the Blu-Ray version of the "Assembly Cut" of Alien³ if you can.  It feels like a completed film with the new ADR, whereas the DVD version of that cut has the on-set audio with subtitles and feels more like a workprint.  I wouldn't say the Assembly Cut makes it a good film, since it doesn't really address many people's basic issues with it, but I've always enjoyed Alien³ on some level, and the Assembly Cut does make it a better film.

I always remember preferring the theatrical for Alien 3, which I actually do enjoy as a film. But maybe that preference was based on the crappy quality of the DVD version, I honestly can't recall what I didn't like about it. Maybe it is just because the theatrical was the first I saw and I liked it well enough as is.

I'll definitely have to give the Assembly Cut another shot once I get my hands on the BDs (Alien set is at the very top of my list of BDs I'd like to own).

4. Yeah, don't bother with Resurrection, it's garbage.

PROMETHEUS was (Alien 0?) NOW NO LONGER SPOILER FREE.
Time

It was kind of sad to watch all the excitement and build up in this thread, then to see it all deflate with that last trailer.

My excitement for it fell through the floor as well, but I am still going to go see it opening week. I rarely ever make it to the cinema, or deem films worth wasting money on the ticket price, and this is the first movie I have been somewhat excited about for a while now. Not to mentioned the director made two of my all time favorite movies.

I am not expecting much, but I'll give it a shot.

The points about Duncan Jones' Moon looking sexy and elegant with its clunky and modest technology is well made. Modern Sci-fi movies tend to jam pack the frame with way too much stuff simply because technology permits and they can. The prequels and J. J. Trek are great examples of this. Unfortunately, it looks like Prometheus is following suite. Not sure we should have expected it not to. Scott was brilliant and a bit on the edge at one point, but by now he is pretty mainstream and run of the mill. I'd love for this film to be a comeback, but there is really no reason to expect it will be.

You know I take a good note when things are clearly adressed and formulated, not insulting.

No one suggested Walkingdork "started a fire". He said he is tired of "putting out fires" and I pointed out that he has done nothing to try to put any fires out.

I wasn't suggesting he should be either. They aren't his fires to put out. Earlier on I did make the suggestion that he shouldn't poke his head into ancient history he doesn't understand by suggesting someone unignore someone they have obviously put on ignore for reasons perfectly valid to themselves, and which may even be a sore spot for them, as it was for Warb. What I said there was filled with my agitation that all this crap that had been dormant for a good while was being needlessly dug back up. I never thought or suggested he should have scoured through the archives to read every bit of history between each and every current member of the forum.

I hold nothing against Walkingdork, nor have I had any problem with him. I am quite fond of him, I have a lot of respect for him, and as expressed a few posts ago, I really do hope this whole mess doesn't drive him out of Off Topic (and I was really glad to hear him say that it wouldn't).

CP3S, you know Warbler personally more than anyone on these boards, so in order to "protect" him like it seems you're willing to do it, maybe you should shot a pm if you think someone is going too far rather than insulting said people in order to refresh their mind, or let them know when they are new.

ABC, I hate to say it, but long ago you sunk from member status in my mind to that of a troll. I wasn't insulting you to "refresh your mind", I was just providing you with the amount of respect that I feel you have earned from me over the years. If you are going to act like shit, don't be surprised when people treat you like shit.

Admitting that probably isn't going to make me any more popular with the general off topic population, but that doesn't really bother me. I feel fine being completely honest about it and not hiding behind any bullshit.

If you go back and look, you'll notice that I treated you with a fair deal of respect in threads where you were making real discussion, and treated you a great deal harsher in threads that you were just bullshitting random stuff in for attention. You've been around as XYZ for a little while now, from first seeing that user name I assumed it was you, but you were acting respectful, so I treated you with respect. It wasn't until after I pointed you out to the others and you started acting like your old self again and posting trollish posts in every other topic that I started being a dick to you.

Voyager had some really cool episodes caught in the midst of a lot of really mediocre to bad ones.

The nature of the show's storyline gave them the opportunity to visit some really cool concepts. It kind of went back to the roots of Star Trek, which was originally a show about exploring the universe and stumbling on some really weird things along the way. Later seasons of TNG and all of DS9 really dropped that concept and focused on other things (like sitting around tables having long talks about diplomacy, then going out and shooting stuff).

Not liberal enough, pal! :P No, I kid, you're very liberal as well.

Actually, from posting our political compass results a few weeks ago, it became very clear that our liberalism is on almost exact opposite ends from each other.

In reality I am more of a libertarian agnostic, which when it comes to stereotyping and pigeon holing, most liberals would place me with the conservatives.

I know right! Like that dude who decided to leave off topic because a bunch of member were getting annoyed at someone for trolling, totally drama queen that one...   ;)

Seriously, don't leave because of this. You're over reacting big time and being a bit of a baby. It isn't your responsibility to put out fires, and you've been doing a shitty job at it anyway. Just ignore certain threads and this whole thing will blow over pretty soon. There is still a lot of decent conversation to be had around here. We already lost Warbler (likely for good) because of this BS.

Anyone willing to fill me in on why this thread exists?

Well, you see, it all has to do with trolls. Trolls like doing something known as "trolling", which this thread is a good example of. ABC isn't a full bred troll, full bred trolls only troll. It could be regressive genes and he may only be some fraction of a troll, but I think it is probably safe to say that one of his parents were trolls, making him 50% troll. Though in reality the percentage of troll blood he contains could very likely be higher. This is all just speculation and it is kind of hard to say for sure.

ABC exhibits wacky behavior which in times past was kind of fun, but over the last few days his troll side has been very active

I never really got into DS9 when it first aired, so I've decided to watch it. Currently on season 3, and so far my feelings are mixed. The storyline is interesting and the characters are ok (admittedly, I'm having a harder time connecting with them than I did with the TOS and TNG crews), but it's nowhere nearly as gripping and interesting as, say, Babylon 5.

I've heard that the last four seasons are quite a bit better than the first three, so hopefully that's accurate. I wouldn't say it's been bad so far by any means...just not exactly captivating.

I agree with all of this completely. I started watching DS9 a couple of years back, with it being the only Trek series I'd only managed to catch one or two episodes of. I made it about halfway through season 3 over the course of several months back in 2010, and have never managed to come back to it. They are still there waiting for me, and I still intend to watch them sometime, but for over a year now, I just haven't been in the mood for them and have had more interesting thing to watch.

"Not exactly captivating" is a great way to put it.

Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time

This brings me a small amount of grim satisfaction:

http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/15/obsidian-missed-fallout-new-vegas-metacritic-bonus-by-one-point/

It is really weird their contract based royalties on a metacritic rating... but that aside... it is kind of sad that Obsidian may very well be on its way down the tubes, but with a game like New Vegas being one of their biggest recent titles being as poorly made as it was, it isn't too surprising. Stuff like that does and should reflect poorly on a developer.

I have ranted about my New Vegas woes on this forum enough to fill a book at this point. It was the game I was most excited about in 2010 (wow, has it been that long?), I bought it release day, and it was as good as I had hoped it would be... only I feel like I have still barely gotten to play it due to game breaking glitches. Even the last time I tried to play it, a good six months after release, it still suffered enough severe glitches to be a bit frustrating.

That game really shouldn't have shipped in the condition it was. It is sad, because it was a really cool game and obviously a lot of hard work went into it, but freezing up every half hour and common errors that cause corruption of your save file when you are just over halfway through the game kind of wreck the whole thing. It should have remained a highly desirable title for a long time, but instead the price plummeted rapidly.

Months passed with the game containing a common glitch that completely ruins your save file forcing you to start over and hope you happen to beat various quests in an order where it won't happen again. The game received a day one update, what did it do? Fixed an exploit that allowed the player to cheat and gain as much money as they wanted. Good priorities there, can't have people cheating in a single player game, but freezing every thirty minutes is okay.

Several more updates poured out over the first two months, but none of them were aimed at fixing the game breaking glitch. They finally did announce a update that was going to fix the game save glitch, yay! And it did. The kicker was it came out the day before the games first DLC. Nice. No problems having our developers spending their time making new content for you to purchase, but we really can't spare the resources to make playable the stuff you've already wasted your money on.

He means that you, ABC, and myself can defend ourselves and understand when we are being picked on.

Again, it wasn't my intention to pick on Tim or make any negative comment about him. It makes me sad at least one person misinterpreted it that way, I hope no others did. In my profession I deal with many individuals with similar challenges, and would be one of the last people in the world to take jabs at Tim for my own amusement or for the amusement of others'.

I really do hope that in the future that if anyone thinks I am treating someone overly unfair like that, they won't hesitate to call me out on it.
