An Apple computer repair man called me 'an arse', in writing and signed it which I took as a invitation to a free replacement computer, it was and all so in that respect I wasn't upset.

I want to hear more about this story.

So there was some contract for a new Apple computer through a warranty or something, I assume, and the dude wrote in it that you were an arse?

That's awesome! I wish people would call me an arse in contracts. I'd sign the hell out of them!

The fiddler's wife or girlfriend, I'm guessing.

You've made a lot of assumptions here.  Why can't the fiddler be gay?  Why can't the fiddler be a woman?  Why can't the fiddler be a gay lesbian woman who is married to a wife...wait, that would make your answer...wait...

What was the question again?

As I clicked the post button I considered some of those things and pondered who would be the first to call me out on them.

However, I did not consider the possibility of the fiddler being a lesbian. I like that. Our hypothetical copulating fiddler is officially now a lesbian and she is married.

Old ST fans who are more likely to have hated STID are not going to be the ones throwing money at J.J. Trek products and ticket sales.

maybe not, but if not for them, there would be no Trek today.   Old ST fans kept Trek alive between the end TOS and the first movie.   Without them, Trek would have been a long forgotten and J.J.  would have nothing to remake.

That is part of what sucks so much about J.J. Trek. Fans kept it alive all these years so it could go on to become a crappy series of summer actions movies that they hate.

That is a good point too. Actors don't get "salaries" from films.

Also I should add that anyone who is an actual fan of Simon Pegg isn't likely to be bothered by his "fuck you" comments, even if they were one of the ones who hated STID. That comment fits with the personalities Pegg exhibits in his own projects.

A lot of actor are total d-bags and probably think a lot worse of their fans than a simple f-you. Christian Bale is obviously a complete asshole, and the sort of person I wouldn't think twice about avoiding company with, but it didn't stop me from enjoying the Batman films he was in and contributing a modicum of finances to his job security (as it were) by purchasing tickets to those films. Mel Gibson, Alec Baldwin, and plenty of others seem like really, really horrible people, but it doesn't stop too many people from viewing projects they are involved in.

This Pegg stuff is such a minor thing.

I think there is a disconnect in your logic.

Old ST fans who are more likely to have hated STID are not going to be the ones throwing money at J.J. Trek products and ticket sales. It isn't like when the next J.J. Trek comes out they are going to say, well, I was going to go see this turkey of a film, but since Simon Pegg is an ass there is no chance in hell I'm giving any of my money to him.

RE: Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Or, I don't know, maybe its reason to exist is that people who aren't you actually like it. In fact, a lot of people like it, its often cited as the best zombie movie of all time, and often even pops up in best films of all time lists. No reason to exist? It was a major pioneer in the zombie genre, just about every piece of zombie media intentionally references this film in some way. It is also a nifty commentary on consumer society.

It's hard to fathom someone saying such an iconic and important piece of cinematic history has no reason to exist. To say it has no reason to exist is to say it is irrelevant, and Dawn of the Dead is anything but irrelevant. Once its reached the status of having influenced so much, you can't say it has no reason to exist without either being laughed at or appearing like you are simply just trying to bait conversation.

Someone could hate Casablanca with all their heart, and that would be just fine, but if they were to say it was irrelevant and had no reason to exist, it would then become clear they are just talking without putting any real thought behind their words and it would be hard to take anything they say seriously from then on.

Simon Frickin' Pegg.

I lost all respect for this guy after he slagged off the PT and George Lucas (calling him a 'muppet'), only to cash a cheque for work on The Clone Wars.

Now this:

Nice way to alienate your target audience, Simon.

So?

The PT sucked absolute balls. Why not slag them off and their creator? At OT.com we do that all the time.

I've only caught bits of the Clone Wars here and there, and really have never had much interest in watching it, but it seems like a solid animated kid's series. From all accounts I've heard from fellow PT bashing SW fans, it is really well done and enjoyable.

If I were an actor, I certainly wouldn't have turned down the opportunity to do the voice of a well known OT character like Dengar!

I don't see how his dislike of the PT and the direction Lucas has taken Star Wars should make him some sort of sell-out for working on the Clone Wars.

Also, I really disliked Into Darkness, I don't know about the worse Star Trek film, but it was pretty terrible. Simon Pegg can tell me "fuck you!" for my opinion on that film, I still love him. Who cares?

Not really sure how you think he is alienating his target audience. Most of the fans who voted Into Darkness the worst Trek are probably fans of old Trek and hostile toward J.J. Trek in the first place.

People get way too bend out of shape and obsessive over the things celebrities say. Who cares what he says or how he says it? Just because he is famous, does that mean he loses his right to an opinion?

I also have read The Magician's Nephew, which shows the creation of Narnia (of course another parallel to the biblical telling of the Creation of the world), how the witch Jadis came to power there, and shows how the Pevensy children's uncle played a large role in all of this.  I really enjoyed this book.

Now I'm about 2/3 done with The Last Battle, the final book in the series.  I can't believe I read the first book for the first time in 5th grade, yet it's taken me all these years to finally get around to finishing the series.

I've never been a fan of The Magicians Nephew, and it really annoyed me when they change the series numbering to make this the first book (when I was a kid, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe was #1 and The Magician's Nephew was #6, modern publication make them books #2 and #1, respectively). TLtWatW is a much stronger introduction to the series, and I feel like the The Magician's Nephew ruins a lot of the charm of the earlier book by explaining things that were once intriguing mysteries that added to the feel of Narnia, like the origins of the Jadis, the lamp post, and especially the magical wardrobe.

Also, not to be pedantic, but Digory is not the Pevensie children's uncle. During the bombings of WWII, children were evacuated from the city. Digory is just some old Professor with a big home out in the country who took on some children for shelter.

The Silver Chair and A Horse and His Boy are the runner ups for my second favorite Narnia books. Voyage of the Dawn Treader will always be my favorite.

Glad you finally got around to finishing the series. About time!

If you're not tired of the author yet, Lewis' Ransom Trilogy (also known as the Space Trilogy, or the Cosmic Trilogy) is great fun too! Since you seem like you're a fan of sci-fi novels, you should check them out. They're aimed at an older readership, rather than being children's books like Narnia.

Last comic read
Time

Not a big comic guy, really just been reading The Walking Dead for the last few years. Anyway, decided to try reading something new and read the first two volumes of Kick-Ass.

I really enjoyed them. I didn't care much for the movie, but really got into these. After I finished reading them I decided to rewatch Kick-Ass. Absolutely awful. Hated it. But I really enjoy the graphic novels, especially the first one. It follows the same basic story, but they made some really major changes for the worse in the film. I guess to make it more relatable for a mass audience.

SPOILERS In the comic the hero doesn't get the girl at the end. And Big Daddy was just lying to his daughter about having been a cop and her mother dying, he was just another psychopathic comic book dork who kidnapped his own daughter to raise her as a superhero after his wife left him. END SPOILERS.

They are two issues into Kick-Ass 3 so far, and I am completely caught up now. Still haven't read the Hit-Girl spin-off, but will do so soon.

Anybody else read Kick-Ass?

Video Games - a general discussion thread

Haven't been on my Xbox in a while. Got on it for a bit today. What is going on???

Now that the thing it at the end of its life, Microsoft decides to start changing a lot of those really annoying crappy things we've all come to expect and accept over the past decade? No more use of MS points? Now you can actually just pay the cost of downloadable games and content, instead of having to buy fix increments, usually resulting in making you buy slightly more than needed? That would have been awesome a few years ago!

Now you get free games with Xbox LIVE? I've had a live subscription pretty much constantly since 2008, never a single thing free. Now I've decided I don't care about it anymore, and they are throwing all sorts of things at subscribers for free now it seems. They no longer charge developers tens of thousands of dollars to post an update?

I bought Bully: Scholarship Edition for under $4 just a bit ago. A real four dollars charged strait to my card without having to spend $5 in MS points. I never would have imagined Xbox games on demand costing under five bucks. Even for games that you can pick up at gamestop for $5 or so still cost $19.99 on there. Seems like it bottoms out at that point.

If they keep this sort of thing up, and do sales where games are 80% off more often, they might actually start competing with Steam sales. Yeah, I'm not holding my breath either.

Still, when I logged onto my Xbox today, I felt like I had somehow fallen through into some parallel universe. Was kind of tempted to Bing search Firefly season 2, or rent the SW prequels and see if they were any good.

I guess Microsoft is starting to realize they better start being competitive.

Random Thoughts

Bought my first vinyl record in over a year today, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Show Your Bones. I love that album and stumbled on it in a shop, couldn't resist. Also  scored an X-Files "I want to Believe" poster. Have no idea where I'm going to hang it, but I've wanted one since I was a wee lad, buying it seemed like the right thing to do.

Think I'll go hang it right now.

JEDIT: Behind my bedroom door, where almost no one will see it but me. Perfect place.

See, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one around here who'll get it.

Unless you know of another?

It was pretty cool back when I lived in Detroit to hear that language being spoken by random people at Wal-Mart, who would never in a million years guess that I could understand exactly what they were saying.
