Haha, so I sat down to play Assassin's Creed II and there is no voice audio (I just missed the "It's a me Mario" line, I think). Really weird, tried a bunch of thing and can't get it back. Lousy glitchy game.

For a story based game, it really is pants to play it without any dialogue. Unfortunately, scouring the web for solutions given to others that have had this problem, I found they've all gotten really useful suggestions like, "Unmute your TV", "Try buying your games next time instead of pirating them!", "Delete the .iso you downloaded and BUY THE GAME." Hate the internet, way too many idiots.

Finding absolutely nothing helpful online. Well, I guess that is the end of Assassin's Creed II for me.

EDIT: Well, spent even more time searching and I am officially giving up. Google searches show that a lot of people have had the problem, but they usually just get flamed for it and/or accused of piracy or of being stupid. No solutions given, no fixes, nothing, but it seems to a problem across all three platforms, PC, PS3, and 360, only not a common enough problem for Ubisoft to have bothered with a patch or even for cleaver fans to have figured out a solution.

Soooo, hopefully I can at least get a few bucks for this POS game by selling it on amazon.

I've been waiting for something more to come from this since I first saw it a couple years ago.  It's so awesome, whatever it is.

What's In The Box?

Wow. A nice one, although I don't know what it really was.
And though I don't know Half Life (since I was never into shooters) it is fun to see the logos of Black Mesa, Aperture Science (Portal, and Half Life, too?) and Hanso Foundation (Lost) on the fake website of Babel Research.

Definitely some very heavy Half-Life influence in there, the look and feel of the atmosphere was heavily borrowed from HL2, as were the majority of the sound effects throughout, and I recognized many of the music cues as being from Lost. Pretty interesting little short, but it looks like it was from 2009 and has been on hold. Probably dead in the water then.

I actually just discovered Beyond Black Mesa and Escape from City-17 earlier this evening. Beyond Black Mesa was kind of cool, but I didn't think it was near as well done as Escape from City-17. The combine soldiers looked okay I guess, but I really wasn't a fan of the zombies being portrayed as regular zombie movie type zombies. I love the unique Half-Life brand of parasitic aliens that latch onto your brain, mutate you, and turn you into a zombie into a creepy, wailing, slowish moving zombie. The running spitting modern Hollywoodesque zombies this just weren't very Half-Lifey to me.

The big over the top Matrixesque fight scene toward the end between Adrian and the Combine soldier struck me as extremely comical (and very lame). And the whole sacrifice thing at the end when he drops the grenade behind them makes no sense. For one, it has a bright flashing red light on it, so the Combine have to be really dumb not to see it yet they are still approaching them. It would have made more sense for them to run, unless I missed something, they seem to be sacrificing themselves for no other purpose than to kill half a dozen Combine soldiers (did I miss something?). Feels like it was done for no other reason that to be sappily dramatic (though it suffered from that through and through with the dire voice over narration), and to bring a quick end to the story. However, I still have to appreciate the effort that was put into it.

Thanks, bkev, although I'd already found the answer through Googling.  But, for some reason, it's still not working.  When I tried to try it out in Word, it said there was insufficient memory or disc space.  But more specifically, how do I use it for other programs, say image manipulation or editing software instead of word processing?

Go to C:/windows/fonts (haven't used Windows in years, and find my brain starting to get foggy about it), I think that is the place. Anyway, somewhere in your Windows folder is a fonts folder. Just drag and drop the font file in there (should be a .ttf or maybe a .tte file extension, if not maybe that is your problem, search for the font name again with a .ttf/tte extention), if bkev's install thing doesn't work, and you should be set. All your programs ought to get their fonts from that folder, so any new ones you add to that directory should show up in MS Word, Paint, PowerPoint, Photoshop, whatever.

Speaking of NES, my toploader Nesie (or if you want to be lame and not name your consoles, the NES 2) is probably going to retire...

Aww, that is sad. Going to replace her with anything? I personally prefer the original front loader NES, replace the connector (usually -$10 on ebay or wherever you can find them) and they work brilliantly, and they look gorgeous to boot. I have however, always wanted to try out one of those two-in-one generic brand NES/SNES units. Be a nice space saver, would keep me from putting wear and tear on my classic systems, and the biggest downside being no place to plug in a zapper isn't such a big deal anymore now that I no longer have a TV the zapper would work with anyway. Still, I think it would be weird playing the original Zelda or Metroid with a SNES controller... I'd miss the old boxy two buttoned thing.

The greatest misconception about '1984' is that GO was warning us about what could happen. That is true, but only part of the truth. Rather, he was alerting us to what is happenning- at this moment- at any modern moment. He was describing the inborn and conditioned mechanisms that drive people to use modern techniques to seek power-UNLIMITED POWER-without end. WS tells his torturer that there are more rational ways of dealing with him and he is promptly tormented yet more for missing the point entirely. The point is that, for people who start down the path of controlling all in the name of some greater good, a point will be reached when it is no longer sufficient to hold potential power. At a point, only the exercise of actual power to intrude in the most minute and intimate ways in the life of another can be acceptable. "Power corrupts...." It was also a tale about the effect such total survaillance has upon the observed- Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle. There's no escape from it. The more intensive the observation, the more radical the course of the observed is altered. How utterly warping it is to the individuals trapped in such intolerably inhuman conditions.

Oh man, I just fell in love with you... a little.

Half-Life: Escape from City-17.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKffQO2UZBE&feature=relmfu

While far from flawless, these guys did a fantastic job on the little of it they did make. I'd love to see the whole thing, or a feature length film made by them. Unfortunately, this is from back in early 2009 with no sign of life since then. Beside the trailer I posted, there is a five minute long "part one" of the feature up on youtube, but the second part promised to be "coming soon" never showed up. I've always grimaced at the idea of a Half-Life movie, but man, these guys did an amazing job for a next to nothing budget.

Got my girlfriend to finally play and beat Portal in a single setting the other day, so I think I already have my co-op partner for that one, sorry 05 ;)

Of course, if it is anything like Portal, I am not going to mind tackling it multiple times (though, again, if it is anything like the first Portal, the very first time is a unique experience that can never be relived).

I am probably setting myself up for extreme disappointment, but I kind of have my fingers crossed hoping that Portal 2 brings us some hints that Half-Life 2: Episode 3/Half-Life 3 is on the way followed by full fledged confirmation at E3.

Come on 2011, don't disappoint me! At this point Half-Life feels a bit like a really good TV show canceled on a cliff hanger, one last installment providing closure to the current plot line and I could live content without another sequel.

^ You actually make an amusing point about the developers not seeing any of that second hand sells money. There is/was a big guilt trip movement aimed at piracy (don't get me wrong, I really don't support piracy) that made the claim pirates are essentially robbing developers of money they deserve (true, but I think it is over played), yet nobody really cries out against the used game market (or used music market) that does the exact same thing. A lot of people will gladly buy used to save $5 or $10 dollars, if that game changes hands four times while it is in that premium price range, that is four or five brand new copies that the developers very well may have lost money on thanks to the recirculation of a single copy. Here I think one could easily make the claim that the second hand market is as or more detrimental to sales of video games, movies, and music as The Pirate Bay and other torrent sites.

And another topic your comment made me think of is the price of used games. Assassin's Creed II has only been out for a little over a year, yet it can be bought new for around $20.00 already (in fact, I purchases my copy for $17.99 back in December, when it was just over six months old). Left 4 Dead 2 has been out for about a year and a half, and it can already be found readily for $15.00. Fallout 3 just recently made a huge price drop, but prior to that it spent a steady couple of years dropping no lower than $30 for used copies, yet Fallout: New Vegas has only been out for a little more than six months and has only had one of eight planned DLC packs released for it, and it is already $20.00 brand new (man, do I regret buying that on release day!) Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood has been out since last November, yet it is still $55 brand new. Typically Halo games take years to come down in price, but Reach (another game I'll kick myself for buying near release) I've already seen used for $35.00 just around six months after its release. Meanwhile, Oblivion GOTY edition stays at a steady $40.00 used, despite being much older than any of the other games I've mentioned above. It is getting really hard to anticipate what games will keep their value and what ones will take major value plummets. The latest Medal of Honor game which has received really poor reviews and sales, but I'd still kind of like to play anyway, stays at a steady $50 range for a used copy, despite the fact that every store I go to has several used copies in stock.

The only game I bought new over the last year that isn't almost worthless now resale wise is CoD: Black Ops. Unless it is something like CoD or L4D that I will play a lot with friends online, I think I need to be done buying games that are anything newer than six months to a year old. Unfortunately, as much as it pains me to think of waiting, I think that needs to include the upcoming Portal 2 (I felt kind of burnt that Valve's previous release, Left 4 Dead 2, seemed to constantly go on sale for $20 off regular price within a month after its release, might wait to see if Portal 2 does the same. On one hand Valve is absolutely awesome at giving excellent deals on their games, but on the other hand it feels a bit like a kick in the mouth to those loyal fans who support them and buy their products shortly after release).

You had me worried.  I always somewhat over-recommend things only to find that people don't have the exact same tastes I have (shocker!).

Even if I had hated it, I wouldn't have held it against you. That fact is the first Assassin's Creed really appealed to me and I really wanted to play it, then it turned out to be very different and much slower paced than how I thought it would be. So at its release hearing everyone talk about Assassin's Creed II fixing all the problems of the first game and blowing people away caught my interest from the start. Though I never wanted to spend much money on it and it quickly faded out of my radar, you just happen to be the one who kept mentioning it and reminding me that I wanted to play it.

So, Xhonzi, getting way ahead of myself here, but have you tried out any of the DLC? 340 msp each makes them sound a bit tempting, if they really add anything worthwhile.

EDIT: I just got done slowly following my mother through the city while she lectured me then accused me of having vaginas as my only outlet

Shouldn't that be classed as an 'inlet'?

The game does get more action eventually, but it's more to do with the story and the characters.

The vagina itself would be classed as an inlet, but it is being used as an outlet for him... so his mum is accurate.*

Yeah, I finally got my assassinatin' gear and assassinated my first assassinee. I was giving the game a lot of crap last night for Xhonzi's benefit (he is the one that recommended it to me), but I was actually enjoying it quite a bit. I think I made it far enough in to be sufficiently hooked, which was where the first one failed me. I played it for a while and it never managed to hook me or even interest me in the slightest during my first time playing it, so I never picked it up again to continue. Now that I am enjoying the second one, I think I may pick up the first one again and play it for a bit just for comparisons sake.

Never mind, her agitation ended when I pressed "B" to remove her dress. I've never known it to work like that in real life... if there is agitation involved, attempted removal of clothing is a good way to make sure the agitation stays for a bit.

Oh shit! Her dad walked in on us! Gotta go!

(Maybe I'll get to kill something in the next hour or so!)

EDIT: Well, no assassinatin' to be done yet, fun can wait, we've got documents needin' deliverin! Wow, I swear this is going to turn into a game at some point. No way it got this good of review for being a non-game. Maybe it makes you work really hard between play time as a sneaky tactic to make the times you do get to actual play a game feel more special. Sneaky Ubisoft!

EDIT: So, it is a bit like GTAIV, only without the violent crimes, drug selling, and car theft and you don't get to beat up Albanians. Is it weird that this game is making me want to quit and play GTAIV?

EDIT: I just got done slowly following my mother through the city while she lectured me then accused me of having vaginas as my only outlet, and now I am carrying stuff for her! This "game" is filled with so much non-stop action it is making my head spin!

I met the British prick a bit ago. Hmm, undressing a lady? Classy game. I get more than enough of that in real life, don't really need it/want it in my games, I'd rather just not have to superficially press buttons to preform silly actions and actually play a video game. I hope there is some of that involved somewhere in here.

The "your sister" joke was good though. Definitely need some more of that.

EDIT: So, I just button mashed for a few minutes and knocked out a dozen or so guys, then a button held for a while to rob them, now I am on my way to see the doctor. This is game is absolutely brilliant!

EDIT: Oh man, I am about to pay a "surprise visit" to some poor unsuspecting girl who needs sleep. Not sure how I feel about this game...

EDIT: It is good to know "a minute" is all Ezio needs. Erm, this does become a game at one point, right? It isn't all about wobbling babies heads, knocking guys out and robbing them, chasing your brother, and doing slightly irritated maidens, is it?

So, Xhonzi, about five minutes ago I decided to start on Assassin's Creed II. Watching a cut scene and BAM! Finally I am in the action and playing as an Assassin, super exciting! Eh hem, what does the game have me doing? It has me as a blood covered new born infant and is telling me to repeatedly press "A" to kick my feet, I do that for a bit, and it tells me to repeatedly press "B" to wiggle my arms... already I am tempted to turn it off. How exactly is immersing me in the game any more so than just showing me a cut scene? Ridiculous games and there quick time button mashing for no reason. Just had to rant about that. Oh well, back to kicking my feet as the world's deadliest assassin... of the 1400s. Hopefully I don't have to breast feed or learn to toddle next...

;)

EDIT: Oh geez, now it has me wobbling my head.

EDIT: Haven't even really done anything but the intro and I have three achievements. Even Lego games make you work for the things.

EDIT: Oh man! And a "your sister" joke, now we're talking!
