Methodical Hat Knocking
Time

Seriously there has to be a way.

Sometimes I feel I was born about 100 years or so too late. It is too easy to get tied down in this modern world we live in. I feel utterly overwhelmed when I look at how many school loans I have yet to pay off. I'd love to disappear to some remote village in some foreign country for a couple of years, even if I just live by the sweat of my brow, hunting and gathering. But there are too many financial obligations back home to worry about. I could simply just ditch them all, but in the event of wanting to return home and visit family, I'd probably be snatched up and thrown in jail for having not payed any of my debt for over two years.

But if you could find something that pays you, like a job on a cruise liner (somebody has to wash the sheets, clean the dishes, scrub the deck, prepare the meals, hand out towels, and sell drinks on those things). You could be getting paid and getting away all at once. If I lived anywhere near the coast, I would have gone out today and found the head quarters for every cruise place I could find and dropped in applications.

Methodical Hat Knocking
Time

"Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand on me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from delibertly stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off -- then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can. This is my substitute for pistol and ball. With philisophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the ship. There is nothing surprising in this. If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or another, cherish very nearly the same feelings toward the ocean with me." - Herman Melvillie, excerpt from Moby-Dick.

I am definitely quite grim around the mouth, my hypos have definitely gotten the upper hand on me, and I have already knocked off several people's hats this week alone. It is beyond a doubt time for me to get to sea, but unfortunately, I don't live in the eighteen hundreds...

Lately it seems everyone around me has been going nuts with taking cruises. Maybe ticket prices are down with less people traveling, or maybe everyone around me is somehow doing a lot better financially than me (disregarding the fact that they tend to whine about the economy in the same conversation that they announce their planned cruise).

Anywho, Ishmael has some fantastic advice, "never go as a passenger". Taking that advice, I am seriously considering finding myself a job on some ship somewhere, probably a cruise liner, though I may be a bit late in the season for that. Anybody here ever do any of that kind of work? Worked on a cargo ship, a ferry, or a cruise liner? I wonder how difficult it would be to get into that line or work? I imagine it would be long hours, and you'd be away from home for months at a time, which sounds absolutely wonderful to me right now.

I got your joke about the volume thing, funny stuff. Really. I guess I should take your last post to infer that you didn't actually get a cheap TV, and only said you did to make the volume joke... so disregard my last post about fixing the audio.

On a side note, my very first TV was quite a nice TV ($300 back in the nineties) that was given to me for free due to the mere fact that it didn't have sound... a problem that was easily fixed.

Nanner Split's Super Fun Time Land
Time

Wooohoooo! SUPER FUN TIME TIME!!!

Wow, seems weird reading WESHALLPRESERVES posts. I miss that kid. Seems like he had been gone since way before we got the new forum software, but yet he has an avatar, which means he must have come around here since then. I must have missed his posts, if he even made any.

Nanner Split said: You can rest assured that you will always have awesome field trips here at Nanner Split's Super Happy Fun Time Land!

Lame! "Rest assured" my ass! We never even went on a single field trip, and you had plenty of people sign up, so no excuses. I want my money back!

How can I get someone to go away?
Time

Wow, if I were you'd I'd be a lot more worried about my dad's health.

The fact that he is doing nothing but watching TV and being grouchy sounds like he might be taking his job loss relly hard, or at the very least responding to it very poorly. It can be pretty jarring to be torn out of a situation you have become comfortable with (i.e. getting up every morning, going to work, and recieveing a paycheck every payday) and we don't always adapt as we should.

Your dad sounds like he might be kind of depressed (everybody expresses this a little differently), and sitting around starring at a glowing box day in and day out is a sure fire way to find yourself even deeper in depression. You didn't mention having a mom or any siblings around, and you mentioned that you do the cleaning, so I will assume it is just you and you dad. Does he have any close friends around? People that he has known and respected for many years? Your grandparents, uncles, aunts, long time family friends?

If things are really as bad as you say, and he really never even leaves the couch, then you might need to seek the help of some of these other people in his life to get him moving again. Does he leave the house at all? Or is the bathroom, kitchen, and couch literally the only places he sees for certain stretches of time?

On to Bingo's suggestion, he has a very good idea. Just keep filling out applications. Sure things are tight right now, and hiring is slow, but don't let that be an excuse. Things come up, employees quit or get fired and new ones have to be hired. Fill them out for everyplace you can think of, and then a few more, and with a little luck, sooner or later you'll get a call from one of them. Also keep in mind that they only keep your application on hand for about three months, and sometimes less. Most applications will have this written on them. So be sure to reapply as soon as possible. I assume you are in high school, but if not, keep in mind that once school starts and high school students quit their summer jobs, this will open up a lot of positions. If you are in college, many stores have policies of working around your school schedule and will gladly do so.

Hope your situation takes a turn for the better, and I hope your dad's situation isn't quite as severe as I picked up on from your post.

And it's not that the name is changing, at least not at the one I work at - the medium and large boxes all say that, though, for some reason ...

Yeah, the linked article explained that only some locations are taking on the name "The Hut" in order to make it more of a hip hang out place, rather than merely a Pizza place. Funny thing is... it is still just a pizza place.

Looks like all the boxes have taken the change though, last pizza I got there also had that same box. I just figured it was a marketing thing, rather than a marketing thing in the form of a partial name change for some locations.

Am trying myself to get cheap GOUT copies.

At amazon you can find used copies for around $5 - 7 USD each plus $3 for shipping, which ends up being about ten or under for each movie. Not the cheapest, but not too bad either.

If you want to gain some of your money back, each of these are two disc sets, containing both the "bonus disc" and the 2004 SEs. Just take the 2004 SE disc out of each set (keeping the GOUT which is on the bonus discs for yourself), relist them as the 2004 single discs version on the amazon marketplace for a few pennies under what everyone else is selling the 2004 version of each movie for and specify that they don't come with the original case. Not sure what you'd get for them, probably a few bucks anyway, but that is a few more dollars off the price of your GOUT. I imagine you could probably score the entire GOUT for about $20 or less this way.

That said, the GOUT is a pretty freakin' worthless set anyway.

Why not the new thread? Afraid it will get in the way of all the other amazing discussion that goes on in this corner of the forum?

Anyway, sky knows it is age old and relentlessly discussed, at ot.com he has always been a primary participant in these discussions. I think every know and then the realization of just how ridiculous this whole situation is catches up to sky and he has to post about it to vent.

I'm at the point that i should say screw it, let lucas be left behind there are plenty of other worthy films on dvd and blu ray getting transfers to keep film fanatics happy.

Way ahead of you buddy. I really don't even care anymore myself. If GL doesn't want me to watch what is quite literally his masterpiece, as well as three of the very few decent movies he has ever been involved in, in high quality then so be it. Screw him. Took me a couple of years to be bothered with picking up cheap used copies of the GOUT. Even if by some miracle it ever was released in full quality blu-ray, I'd probably do the same thing and not bother buying it until I could get it dirt cheap. So sick of trying to fight to see Star Wars in watchable quality, I don't even really care much about it anymore.

But I find it pretty ironic that you feel TDK isn't a Batman movie, while enthusiasts such as myself feel that it captures every significant part of Batman into the ultimate Batman movie. Plus it gives the best ending in all of comic book film history, really showing the true nature of Batman.

I felt the ending to TDK was silly and contrived. Me and my friend were laughing in the theater when we saw the ending, and I am pretty sure that is not the reacting the film makers hoped to evoke. The friend I went to see it with is a huge fan of the Batman comics too. He thought Batman Begins was by far the better film. I tend to agree with him, I can't say I really cared for The Dark Knight all that much. I think the insane over hype really brought it down a bit for me.

I think the reason alot of people will say things like TDK didn't feel like a Batman movie, is because they were introduced to Batman via the first Burton film, which was extremely unBatman like, and that set their standard.

I love Beneath The Planet Of The Apes it used to give me nightmares as a child, I also like Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes (even if the political side of the side is rather heavy handed). I've always had a taste for the bleak.

Yeah, me too actually, regarding Beneath and Conquest. I am a huge sucker for Planet of the Apes, I just can't get enough of those movies (excluding the recent Tim Burton disaster), I even enjoy the TV show. Though I have never been able to get into the animated series.

That said, I do see them as pointless sequels, and really respect Heston regarding the whole sequel thing. I wish more actors would take that kind of pride in themselves. These days it feels like older past their prime actors are just desperately prostituting themselves out. I really hate to see that.

Yeah DP, you're right. George's original intention in making Amidala a queen was to rationalize the princess bit. But then he dropped it in the next movie by saying that she was elected queen, and was now just a senator.

Unrelated, I also find it funny that she uses decoys her whole life, even as a senator, then when her decoy (who now looks nothing like her) gets killed at the beginning of AOTC, she suddenly stops using decoys.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

@RoccondilRinon, I don't see why he should have to apologize. He is free to hold what opinions he likes, and he is also free to change or misrepresent those opinions if he for some reason chooses. He seems to have left anyway, and I don't I see why he should come back when you are acting like such an ass. Also, since you consider him nothing more than a troll, why would you even care to have an apology from him? For my part, when there is a member I consider to be a troll, I'd take his absence over an apology any day of the week. This over sensitivity that follows Ady's edit never ceases to amaze me.

@Darth Venal, I know you want to defend your friend, but at this point it is probably just better to drop it. Mr. Ghostface apologized and just about everyone is willing to accept that apology. It is not worth continuing the fuss for those who want to bully out more apologies in an attempt to joust windmills for the sake of SW:R's honor.

Seriously, everybody, let it go. Time to move on.

The other problem is everybody knows that Anakin is going to have to get it on with a queen sooner or later, in order to create a princess.

Which brings me to another poorly thought out point. Obviously princess Leia was a princess in the first movie, to add that kind of fairy tale or fantasy charm to space in the first Star Wars movie. I think it worked, even more so since the princess turns out to be a bossy pain in through much of her time with the heroes.

Now her is the messed up bit that I rarely here mentioned (here's one for you Gaffer), it is common knowledge she is a princess. Luke knew about her judging by his reaction, "The PRINCESS? She is HERE?" So she is a public figure in the galaxy, and it is common knowledge she is a princess... but why?

Seems like the fine citizens of the galaxy would be asking, "Ehem, what exactly makes her a princess again?"

And the response? "Oh, well, you see, her mother was at one point a queen of the planet Naboo, she died and a friend of hers, the Senator of Naboo and his wife, decided to adopt her... but just make sure you don't tell the Emporer, something about his right hand man being the father and would want to turn any children he might discover he had to the darkside."

Kind of funny Vader would never ask, "Hmm, this Senator Organa, who is always giving me trouble, and who used to serve in the Senate with my wife, has an adopted daughter who is a princess. Not too many planets have monarchies these days, I wonder where she is from... Interestingly enough, Padme was a queen, had she not died while nine months pregnant, which I assume without any questions asked, means the nine month old unborn child inside her perished as well, our baby would have been about that age..."

Seriously, this is every bit as bad as hiding Luke but leaving him with his real surname.

Kind of makes you ask the question, why did George even make Amidala a queen in the first place? Seems his original intention was that Leia was the real flesh and blood daughter of a Senator, which in his world, made her a princess. Honestly, this works for me no problem. Why didn't he just go with this for the PT? In trying to add more sense to it and make her a princess because her mom was a queen, he has really made things worse.

Remember back when we had actors like Charlton Heston? Who'd refuse to do sequels on principle, feeling that ultimately they could never be quite as good as their predecessor.

This is why he had such a small role in Beneath the Planet of the Apes. He didn't want to do the film at all, but since they couldn't do it without him, he offered to do it if they would kill off his character in the first ten minutes. They agreed, and later asked him if they could modify the first ten minutes thing in order to have him killed in the climax, but still write it in such a way that he still only has about ten minutes or so screen time, which obviously he agreed to. He also suggested they blow up the planet at the end of the film, and was happy when they decided to go with that, because he thought that would mean there couldn't be any more sequels at all... :D

Anyway, too bad more actors don't take this kind of approach and pride to their acting careers. Instead, they have no problem doing the same thing over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over... so long as they keep getting paid for it.
