Things you like/need that they've discontinued

People go to McD's not to get "adult" food, or gourmet burgers, but to get burgers that taste nothing like what one could make at home.

That whole "adult taste" thing was just marketing, and dumb marketing at that. The thing tasted NOTHING like a sandwich you could "make at home" (however, if you are able to make a sandwich like the Arch Deluxe at home, please send me the recipe!) or like a gourmet hamburger (McDonald's and gourmet can't be used in the same sentence, it is like saying "down in outer space" or "up in the deepest depths of the Pacific Ocean". The thing simply tasted like a McDonald's hamburger on sourdough bread and with some fancy sauce, and it was absolute awesomeness! It was still the same old crap they had always sold, only it was about 100 times as awesome.

I don't think it failed because it tried to be something fancy when people only eat at McDonald's when they are in the mood for a mouth full of crap. A big part of why it failed may have had something to do with the fact they advertised it as something that any kid on earth would be horrified to have to eat. I remember huge billboards featuring various kids with disgusted looks on their faces while seated in front of an Arch Deluxe. Yeah, real brilliant marketing! Hey kids, guess what? You're absolutely going to hate this new sandwich we've created! So don't even think about ordering it! And I can't imagine too many adults thinking, "Gee, if kids are grossed out by it, then it must be one heck of a sandwich! I think I'll order one!" That said, I wasn't an adult during the poor thing's short life span, and I absolutely loved it.

Xbox 360 or PS3 - Which is better? - Advice......
Time

I read the whole thing. Geez you get defensive about your console. If it makes you feel better I will officially declare the PS3 the greatest invention of all time. I was just pointing out that is was more than "just a rumor" from the "Xbox fanboys".

Glad to see they are going to keep the online play free. It is pretty gay that Mircosoft charges for it. They have a bad habbit of getting you on every little thing, and I am sure that is going to come back and bite them in the ass. I was just thinking today about Live's movie service. You can rent and even buy movies through Live, even in HD. But they cost a little more than it would to rent a new release blu-ray from Blockbuster or other rental places.

Microsoft seems to want to see streaming and downloadable media take the place of blu-ray, which is why they never invested much in the HD-DVD aspect of their console. Wise move right? Seems like it at first, if HD-DVD fails, just discontinue the HD-DVD attachment and move onto plan be, streaming and downloadable HD content. But they are shooting themselves in the foot on that one. I could buy a movie off of the Live marketplace for about fifteen bucks, but what is the incentive to do so? I actually have an extremely good reason not to, it'll just take up space on my wussy little 20gb hard drive, and it would cost me over $100 to upgrade that drive to just a meager 160gb (meanwhile, I can buy an external USB 1tb drive for under $100).

For this reason, I'd never even begin to consider buying any movies from them, it would just take up space on my drive and force me to buy an over price higher capacity drive. Same thing with their new "Games on Demand" service, where you can actually purchase and download complete 360 games to your hard drive. Nice, now I can have Mass Effect on my hard drive, playable at anytime and taking up 8gb of my precious hard drive space. I could always redownload it with no additional cost if I decide to delete it to make room for other things, but then I would have to wait for a 8gb download to complete before I could play it again, with a hard copy I could throw it in the drive and be playing it in mere seconds. In this way I see no advantage and many disadvantages to this whole system.

Really seems like it would be to their advantage to drop the price of their hard drive (which are in fact, just your standard PC hard drive with some special firmware installed. Anyone can actually make their own Xbox hard drive out of an ordinary hard drive, provided they have the patience, a desktop PC, and a Xbox HD casing).

Any Dr Pepper drinkers here?

Remember: A Preposition is not a good thing to end a sentence with...

Irregardless of all that, I see you understood what I was going for. So I guess were in pretty good shape considering.

Heheheh! Eat that Xhonzi, eat it with.

Well, yesterday I had half a mind to pick up some of that nasty fizzy colored water stuff from the store I was at. But I never even made it to HFCS, aspartame, and sometimes sugar asle, even though I walked the store around. Ultimately, I ended up purchasing a lovely little mini-keg instead, something for me to drink beside. I am sure I enjoyed the pint and a half I had last night far more than I would have enjoyed the carbonated sugar water; besides, I am still not sure where to get it at. In my area, I really haven't seen it about.

I don't drink carbonated high fructose corn syrup water at all.

Well then you'll be interested in the new Throwback/Heritage thing going on right now. All of them are with cane sugar instead of HFCS!

Wow! That is awesome! I don't drink any kind of soda at all, but just for kicks I may buy a few of those. Stupid society with its obscene obsession with killing itself by consuming the worse things possible... And of course they are only selling it until Feb. 22, your typical American does give a flip about what they consume, and probably have no idea what the hell HFCS is.

Think I might try to find myself some of that throwback crap tonight. After all these years of not drinking any kind of pop/soda/coke, it should be an interesting experience.

Where can you find this stuff at?

Firefly - I'd roll my own, but the cast hasn't gotten back to me yet
McDonald's Arch Deluxe - (not a big fan of McDonald's, but that was a great burger... as far as piss-poor quality fast food goes)
The 90's - Do I need to explain this one?
Young George Lucas
Douglas Adams
Semi-enjoyable airport experiences - (including meeting people at the gate)
Stanley Kubrick
Bulky cell phones that pre-date text messaging
Horse drawn carriages and your own two feet as primary forms of transportation
The days when you could easily live off the grid, because there was no grid
People actually having to meet face to face in order to socialize

I could go on forever... but, uh, yeah...

Full Metal Jacket. Such a great movie.

"I wanted to see exotic Vietnam... the crown jewel of Southeast Asia. I wanted to meet interesting and stimulating people of an ancient culture... and kill them."

"'Freedom'? You'd better flush out your head, new guy. This isn't about freedom; this is a slaughter. If I'm gonna get my balls blown off for a word, my word is 'poontang'."

Socks or Real People?
Time

C3PX was my attempt at coming up with something Star Wars related, if I could do it again, I would have given my user name some more thought. C3PX was a protocol droid that had been converted into an undercover assassin droid from one of Dark Horse's Droids comics. So yeah, I have a lame, poorly thought out something Star Wars (EU no less) related user name.

When signing up here, I think many of us feel the need to come up with a Star Wars related name, only later realizing that doing so is kind of lame.

Using a famous quote from the films as a user name is very uncreative and therefore quick and easy to come up with, yet still somewhat amusing at the same time. So I don't see it as all that suspicious.

Ray's Original Podcast Thread
Time

Being an NPR junkie, I love DLing and listening to the podcast for Intelligence Squared, that way I don't have to listen to all the ads. Do wish it was unedited though...

The only other podcast I have ever really cared about is the Official Lost Podcast, those things are sometimes more entertaining than the actual show. I have almost wrecked my car from laughing so hard while listening to it while driving (not a good idea).

Team Conan or Team Jay?
Time

Warb, sorry if I seemed snappy back in post 70. I honestly thought you were using the Fox News comment as a bit of a slam, I hate being pigeon holed like that. Whether you did or didn't mean it that way, I should not have reacted so harshly.

And now back on topic:

After reading Mielr's post, the whole thing makes a lot more sense. The whole idea that Conan who, as popular as he was on Late Night, was fairly expendable, was able to demand Jay's spot never really added up.

Petition to Threadmaster in re: retroactive probation for poster "C3PX"

The subject of the thread during the period in question was "William Shatner". Poster "C3PX" responded in post #4 with "KHAAAAAAAAAAN!" - presumably referring to Shatner's line from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Strictly speaking, this line of dialogue was not solely delivered by Shatner. It was given in a similar way by Jason Alexander on Seinfeld (c. 1996-1997) and again by the ensemble cast in the movie Free Enterprise (1999). As multiple performances of this line of dialogue can be confirmed, it was the responsibility of the poster "C3PX" to specify which one he intended, but there was no accompanying detail providing such specificity.

I hereby present this defense to the Threadmaster:

Those other usages, by Jason Alexander and from the movie Free Enterprise, and any number of other forms of media that may have quoted that line, were all referencing Shatner.

For example, if I were to make this quotation:

"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."

And attribute it to one of my old college professors, you'd likely accuse me of either being ignorant or dishonest, and correct me by saying it is a quotation from Albert Einstein. If I were to say, "No, no, really, my Under Water Basket Weaving 101 professor said that in class one day." Your logical conclusion would be that my professor was quoting Einstein. In the end, no matter how many people repeat that quote, they are still the words of Einstein.
