C3PX, what do you have against FOX News? I mean, I don't love it but it's not horrible.

Sean Hannity, though. Jeez, what a tool. I agree with him more often than not and I can't tolerate two seconds of him.

Maybe it is not as bad as I am making it out to be, I don't know because I don't watch it. My image of Fox News is O'Reiley, Beck, and Hannity, and since I can't stand those guys, I tend to write the whole thing off.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't think Fox News as a whole is any worse than MSNBC or those other news stations, I'd just rather not screw around with any of them, they are all the same to me.

I forgot to answer Warbler as to where I get my news: Anywhere I can. Anytime something big comes up and I want to know about it, I'll look at several different written sources to try to piece together the situation. Just like kids fighting on the play ground, each side has its own spin to the whole thing, it is better hear out both sides of the story rather than just hearing one kid's side and punishing the other kid. You'll never get an accurate picture from just one side.

If you don't want to answer that's cool, C3PX, but where do you live? If I were to believe the stereotypes, it seems like you live in the heart of the Bible Belt, surrounded by trailer parks, Wal-Marts, and Southern Baptist mega-churches based on what you just said.

Unfortunately for me, you are not too far from the truth. I am currently living in the mid-west (don't care for it much). Though where I am, I see a lot more ghetto slums and nearly empty ornate old church buildings than I do trailer parks and mega-churches.

I just thought we had had enough political discussions together that you'd see that I don't really align with them all that much.

Since I don't watch Fox News, I don't really know much about what is on it. What I do know is that many of the people I know who watch it (but not all) constantly harp on about things that hardly matter, like abortion (what is it to me if someone wishes to kill their unborn child?), kicking God out of schools (poor God), removing God from the pledge of allegance (I don't think much of the whole idea of the pledge to begin with), immigrants taking their jobs (day took er jabs!), and the immense need to blow anything that wears a turban to hell and beyond (that kind of hatred doesn't do anyone any good. When it comes to our nation going to war, it ought to be done with great sorrow, not full out hatred).

Sure, there are a lot of things I agree with those types on, but I probably disagree with them just about as often. Interestingly enough, in the real world, when I find myself in political discussions, I am usually on the left side of the discussion as opposed to the right, so it is kind of funny that I am consistently on the right side of the discussions when it comes to this forum. It is all relative to who you are with, in the real world my friends see me as a flaming liberal, and here everyone sees me as a stanch conservative.

At any rate, long story short, Fox News and the whole "neocon" thing is way too far to the right (or whatever direction they actually are) for me.

Oh Warbler, there you go assume-ing again. Let me guess, been drinking like the last time you made such an asinine comment? You might want to lay off the booze, pal.

I don't watch Fox News, or any of the other bullshit news stations. I actually really dislike Fox News. But oh, I am one of dem der conservatives, so I must masturbate regularly to the Sean Hannity or Glenn Beck show, right? Ass of you and me man, ass of you and me. But mostly you.

And I didn't say I don't watch movies, I just said I rarely watch them, and that I don't watch TV. Is there a prerequisit of watching Star Wars at least once a day to be on these forums or something? Because if so, I have been in the wrong place for all these years.

To tell you the truth I am happiest when the TV is off. If it wasn't for the news, I wouldn't have a TV

I used to not even own a TV. I do now, but I have no cable/antena hooked up to it. The only thing I use the TV for is my Xbox (which I rarely use) and watching movies (which I rarely do), so mostly it just sits against the wall looking pretty. Lost is the only current TV show I am interested in, I just watch it online the day after it airs, and it finishes up this year, at which point I will be 100% TV watching free again.

Out of all the worthless BS shows out there, the best you could come up with in the category of "Those That Need to be Axed" was Lost and Heroes? With all these ridiculous reality TV shows out there, surely you could have come up with some more worthy examples? Plenty of people watch Lost, I think it is awesome, though I have a feeling it is going to crash and burn in this last season, and Heroes has been crap since season two (not that season one was anything that great either) but it still generates plenty of viewers. These shows are meant to be fun and entertaining, not change the world.

Palps, not meaning to be a spelling nazi or anything, but you wrote Fink's name wrong, you put an unnecessary "r" in there.

WRONG!  The "r" is quite necessary, CP3S.

On the contrary my dear friend! I believe the "r" is quite UNnecessary. FInk!

Sony ditching Linux support was a no-brainer; how is this a deciding factor for anyone looking to buy a game console?

I am pretty sure nobody ever said it was. I mentioned that it was a cool feature, and someone corrected me saying the feature was kaputt in the newer version.

Not exactly sure how kicking Linux support out was a no-brainer. If it was such a no-brainer, why have it in the first place? Why introduce this crap into your console, driving the price up, only to remove it later in order to drop the price? The answer is: they were up against it, the console wasn't selling, and they had to gut the thing and rush a cheaper model to market (PSOne and PS2 slimmed down versions both came out much further into their consoles lives, and both improved on the original, rather than taking steps back), removing everything they could do away with to save money and make it what people really wanted all along, something to play games on.

None of this is a slam against the thing, it just is. I think it tried to be far too much, when all it really needed to be was a gaming console, not the "ItOnlyDoesEverything!" machine they tried to make it into. I think that is where the PS3 fell short, and where its older brother the PS2 succeeded flawlessly.

I tend to think that those who bag on Sony's cost-cutting measures are completely glossing over the 360's horrible reliability record and umpteen versions that have caused nothing but confusion for anyone looking to buy one. Add in expensive hardware upgrades (having to buy proprietary hard drives that cost a fortune) and the need to buy a "premium" system just to get an HDMI port until recently, and you have one of the worst consoles, hardware wise, to ever grace the market.

I am definitely not trying to gloss over anything about the 360 or its pathetic history of crappiness. That console is an absolute joke as far as hardware failure goes. And Microsoft's nickel and diming its customers to death with things like wireless network adaptors at $99.99 and the hard drive thing are absolutely ridiculous. Fortunately, its positives far outweight its negatives. Its online gaming cannot be beat (which is the bit I care about the most), and it has a massive library of games (not that the PS3's library is anything to scoff at).

90% of the many 360 exclusives are garbage

90%? That is a pretty high statistic you are throwing around there. Is this based on anything other than your own personal tastes or assumptions? You may not care about games like Halo and Left 4 Dead (which is complete garbage if playing by yourself, but down right amazing with three buddies), but there are A LOT other exclusives out there that are pretty impressive that you very well might like, if they were given the chance.

Interesting idea... See C3PX! Look at the cool/weird stuff you miss out on when you never bother to delve into the nerdier depths of the forums... Yeah, yeah, I know...

Looks like this sucker's been dead for a few days, that just wont do. Let's keep this going.

EDIT: This was a lot more fun before everyone started posting like normal rather than editing their original... too bad very few people will ever bother to back up and read this post...

EDIT 2: Yay! Glad to hear Fink is doing this project!

EDIT 3: Hmm, this thread really should have never left page one. I am very disappointed in you all. What a great concept, tossed right out the window!

EDIT 4: I've been regularly participating in this thread, and no one even know it! But I REFUSE to make a second post!

The new arcade units do have HDMI ports on them. That used to be an elite exclusive feature, but now they all have it.

Wow, I didn't realize the slim couldn't use Linux. There is one more cool feature that Sony has unceremoniously dumped in an attempt to reduce the price of their system (one of the others having been backwards compatibility, which was done away with early on). Since its launch it has been like a ship jettisoning its cargo. Kind of sucks that the PS3 gets lamer as time goes on.

I'm with you, Warb. Not sure how drugs and sex being seen in a different light back in the 70's is suppose to vindicate the guy for drugging and raping a 13 year old. Obviously, if it really wasn't a big deal back then, then there would have been no issue in the first place, it would probably been a pretty normal occurance, and none of us would even remember it ever having happened, if it even went public in the first place.

Kind of scary the man's wife can sit back and defend his actions. Something along the lines of "Yes, he did a horrible thing, but he was going through a lot back then and is a different man now." would have been different and something I might have been able to sympathize with, but instead she is essentially saying that he is the same wonderful man he has always been man and that the times have changed, making his actions seem far worse than what they were when they happened.

Here is the xbox.com's explaination of the differences,

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/compare101.htm

There use to be a bigger price difference between the two, but toward the end of last year Sony released the PS3 slim and dropped the price considerably.

I bought the 360 arcade, and later bought a refurbished 20GB HD for $20 (and the 20GBs has always been far more than adequate for me, even with all the DLC I have picked up). Honestly, it is nice to have a hard drive, just so you can download trailers and demos. The arcade comes with 512mb of space for game saves built in, which isn't all that much. You can, however, buy extra memory cards a lot cheaper than a hard drive. If the model between the Elite and the 360 still existed, I'd recommend that, but it appears they've done away with it on the last price drop.

I still think an Xbox 360 arcade for $199.99 (or one hundred and twenty quid), is quite a deal. Looks like the amazon market place at amazon.co.uk has a 20GB HD for £30, which means it would cost you about £150 minimum if you felt you needed an HD (compared to £200 for an Elite with a 120GB drive). Also keep in mind if you want to play online, you have to dish out another £32.99 (amazon's price) for a 12 month Xbox Live Gold Membership (I got 13 months from some guy on ebay for $37 USD, which as you know, is considerably cheaper than £32. I am sure you could find a similar deal and save yourself a bit). It sucks you have to pay money to play online with the 360, but honestly, their online play absolutely kicks the ass of both Wii and PS3 (I've also heard rumors that PS3 is going to start charging for premium online features so they can make them better, might not be true though).

You can customize a PS3 as much as you can a computer

Since when?

Since never. Hyperbole obviously. A computer holds many more options for a customization, and while the PS3's customization abilities are nifty (it can run Linux, right?) it is still pretty limited. The 360 has no customization ability at all, beyond changing themes. If someone was wanting to use the thing to surf the web, or to run homebrew, the 360 would most certainly NOT be the way to go.

I'd also recommend the 360 for you, especially since you are interested in online play, and having it as a console for your kids. The 360 has a massive library of games out there, plenty of which can be purchased used very inexpensively.

The PS3 is a nifty machine, but for what you are wanting to use it for, I really think the Xbox 360 is your best bet. And reading through the other posts, it doesn't sound like I am alone in that. Though make sure you buy it new, not used. The older models had a tendency to melt themselves from over heating. The newer models have fixed this problem. With a new console you wont have to worry about the over heating (the infamous red ring of death that you have probably heard about), and you'll have the piece of mind of a decent warranty.

Alternatively, if you were not very interested in online play, and mostly just wanted something to keep the kids busy, and if they are not old enough to feel shafted by getting a last gen console, the PS2 is absolutely fantastic, and has a massive library of really good games that can now be bought really cheap.
