I am losing sleep over this!
Time
Not to long ago, there was not even a rumor of the movies being released to DVD. None of us knew if we would ever see them on an official DVD. Probably many of us (I thought all of us, but it seems since the announcement a great number has come out and said it was a pathetic, lame idea since the beginning. Ungrateful...) were looking forward to the X0 project, the best I ever hoped to have on DVD. A version with the love and care required to make it something worth while. I figured once this comes out I wont bother with it anymore, I'll just be content with those. I imagine many others have felt somewhat this way also.

So, I think it is ashame all these people claiming they are giving up because of the discouraging news regarding the quality of the release.

Well, you know what? Worst case scenario, we are back to where we all were a month ago, back when we had no clue that it was going to be released officially. After the first couple of days after the announcment, when the bad news started trickling in, and when I first saw the cover art, I shoved this release off as I have the last two. I don't care about it at all. I wish it were a decent release but it isn't. Now I am back to waiting for the X0. Until then we have editdroid or whichever you prefer.

No More "Preservation Projects"
Time
I suppose if you call it illegal mumbo- jumbo then it is the same whether you get it from a torrent, from Rikter or from anyone else. Personally I would feel safer getting it from Rikter than downloading it. He even has a disclaimer saying you cannot get them if you do not own the originals, which I am assuming you have them on VHS like the majority of us. In that case while it may still be considered illegal, it is in a bit of a gray area, you alreay own that same material on one formatte, you are just getting a backup copy of it on a different formatte. But either way I suppose the way the video industry looks at it, it is all ilegal mumbo-jumbo.

Info Wanted: What is the best preservation version of the Original Trilogy?
Time
From my experience with PAL formatte discs in the US, it is usually the DVD player that throws the fit, not the TV. If you have a cheapo $25 Wal-Mart DVD player it will play them no problem. However some TVs can't display them, but most (that I have tried them on) can. I moved from Europe to the states, so my DVD collection is an irritating mixture of both formattes. Since I do most of my viewing on the computer it isn't much of a problem for me though.

1997 & 2000 VHS Boxset Differences?
Time
I unfortunately have wasted my money on all those VHS sets exept for the 2000s.
I had the originals, then the THX faces set was released and I got them for Christmas one year. The the special editions came out and I got them viewing them more as an alternative version of them. I liked the idea of more stuff in the film. I thought it was really cool back then, but I still had my other versions that I liked more.

Before the days of the TR47 transfer I bought the VCD which has the same covers as the 2000 VHS release. The VCDs were official but made for asian audiences since it was such a popular formatte in asia, so they are PAL. At the time I thought them to be the best I could get since Lucas said he would not put them on DVD until after Episode III was on out, of course he changed his mind.

So if the VHS tapes of that release are just like the VCD release the only new thing on them is a sort of sneak peak for Episode II. It was some interviews with the actors who played Owen and Beru Lars, and with some of the behind the scenes people who talked about the process of finding young actors to fit the roles of Luke's aunt and uncle. On the VCDs this is on the A New Hope disc before the feature, so I imagine it is the same on the VHS.

The Holiday Special: Was it Anikian or Palpatine who....
Time
I didn't question him I merely said he remind me of him and he does. Also I never mentioned the guy I was refering to was a spammer, interesting hiro knew that but if he has been lurking for a while it isn't hard to figure out. Also, don't quote me on this, but I kind of miss Adam, he sort of played the role of the annoying little brother around here. Also it is hard to imagine that there are so many Holiday Special enthusiasts in the world, but then again these are perservation boards so I guess it should be expected.

And yes hiro, welcome to the boards.

I only watched the show for the first time a few days ago so That guy is different from me.

I said you remind me of somebody we used to know, I didn't accuse you of being him.

I wish people would stop trying to fit the HD into SW canon. It was a stupid mistake made to make money off of the popularity of Star Wars, much like the prequels. No love or care was put into it, merely the thought of making money and getting their writters to come up with some outlandish sequences to fill it with. The result; wookie porn, bad costumes, bad acting, and cowerdly wookies. And most unfortunatly Miss. Fisher singing and a Harrison Ford who looks as if, had he been carrying a real gun, would have put an end to his own life in a heart beat.

T'bone's interesting take on the OOT DVD's

However the shoddy workmanship of the 97s had to be movie theater quality, the changes of the 04 would never pass cinema standards.

Will the OOT *even* be DVD9?
Time
It will be great, to get to this film which we would much rather have as the main feature, you will probably have to navigate a bonus menu full of lego advertisments, game demo and trailers for the prequels. I hope there is not anybody who still expects greatness from this release. Prepare to be disappointed and you might end up with something not too disappointing. If you get your hopes up too much you'll either do the typical fanboy thing and say how great it is and how lucky you are to have the very little you have, or you be sickeningly disappointed follwed by and anger towards LFL and $45 dollars or so you just let them crap on.

If Lucas considers the 04 the definitive versions, and he can't even be bothered to make a decent DVD release of those, don't expect him to do anything worthwhile with that other film that is on VHS if anybody wants it.

$36 pre-order (AR) for all 3 titles...anyone found it cheaper??
Time
Wow, sometimes you really have to stop and think about all this. This whole board, our DVD collections and the beginning of DVD. When I stop and think about all that it makes me laugh. Can you believe the humor of this situation? It is really quite funny actually. Lord of the Rings, go to the store buy a copy, your done. Back to the Future, go to the store buy a copy, your done. Star Trek, same way. Star Wars, go to the store, see three different DVD versions, all the same, none that you really want. If only SW was as easy to get on DVD as Back to the Future. I would be happy with a three disc set in one case, no bonus disc. Just give me the real thing in good quality. Instead even the 04 discs are poorly done. It really makes me laugh. How some of the most popular movies of all time are so hard to get on DVD, even now with our standard for a Star Wars DVD being as low as they are, they still manage to aim below our standard.

Three stupid discs and I am happy. Instead we are all wasting a ton of our time on these boards talking about what might have, or should have been.

That whole idea in Star Trek, about every body working for the betterment of mankind, it'll never happen. $$$$ is to important.

Hmm, imstillhiro1112 kind of reminds me of somebody we used to know, somebody who used to go about praising the Holiday Special all the time.

And Scruffy, I do know very well how lame training videos can be, however, while they may be cheesy and corny whatever else, they usually stop short of a woman singing to a bunch of drunken aliens to go home for the night because the bar is closing.

I have sat through the entirety of the HS and I had wanted to see it for many many years and was very happy when I finally got my hands on a decent enough copy. Then I forced myself with great difficulty to sit through it. I would prefer to consider the novels as canon over this thing. It makes our heros out to be dumb silly gits who can't sing. What was that stupid life day song to the SW tune, horrible. I think it is okay for a curiosity, and I wont jugde certian ones who seem to get excited by the mere mention of it, but I certainly don't feel those who have not seen it have missed out on anything.

Cut scenes
Time
Not exactly a homage, that was the way George was used to writing, they told him to remove it because it was becoming American Graffiti in space.

With that making magic CD-Rom, it was great to see parts of Star Wars that had never been seen before for the first time. But it is so little and I think there is a lot more out there. It is sad its locked away never to be seen. I really, really want the deleted stuff from Empire. The first time I found out about the wampa subplot in echo base was when a friend and I were watching an old ESB trailer and saw the part with threepio ripping the sign off. We recongnized right away that it was not in the film. Later it was cool to realize that in the game Shadow of the Empire in echo base there are doors with that same sign on it with wampas inside (my friend and I actually used to film mock documentaries about wampas using that game and a VCR). I would really love to see any deleted footage of that those scenes that they have. I was kind of surprized when the first SW DVDs came out. I thought they would all be in two disc cases like the PT with a bonus disc each, instead just one bonus disc with very little of anything important on it.

Info: a Big bust at the Motor City Comic Con - bootleg sellers
Time
I having grown up in a town too small to host comic cons (well there has been one or two) have never been to one so I don't know exactly how they are, but I think you have to be pretty dumb to set up a booth and sale bootlegs in a public place like that. It isn't like you have to know a secered code or anything to get into one right? If they are selling things like the Holiday Special or even old SW documentaries that are nolonger obtainable ('Star Wars to Jedi' or the Making of Star Wars with Artoo and Threepio), I can understand that. But to actually sell the LD transfers for around $20 each. That just isn't very smart.

You won't miss out forever. Buying these will not make him release them again or not. All this is is another worm on the hook to get you to bite another set of DVDs. Next year he will have a whole new worm. If you don't buy these now, I am sure you will be happy. You can always buy them cheap next year when all the fans who are buying the 2007 sets pawn off their 2006 sets.

The Holiday Special: Was it Anikian or Palpatine who....

Okay, somepeople really seem to have an obession with this Holiday Special thing. It was a stupid Christmas special for the sake of entertaining children and their families (in which it failed miserably). I for one would not care to consider it as canon, though I think some of the people here (though the vast minority) seem to wish to consider it so. If I am not mistaken the "Life on Tantooine" is the part that ends with the bartender singing to the drunken customers telling them to go home. The Galactic Empire is a truely sad and pathetic place if that is required watching for the Galactic Armed Forces.

Upcoming DVD covers
Time
I am starting to think less and less of the OUT that will be included. It is feeling more and more like it is merely the 04s with the OUT included as a bonus feature (merely for historical interests), in that case this will be under the whole "*Bonus materials not rated" idea. What I mean by that is while the film has certian features and standards they don't apply to the bonus material. The OUT will probably be widescreen on both the widescreen and fullscreen versions. It is not much like getting a real OUT DVD. I think this edition will do little more than illigitimize laserdisc transfers like the X0, no longer beign able to claim it is for preservation of an unrealesed film, and encourage fans to add yet anther copy of the SE to their collections.

T'bone's interesting take on the OOT DVD's
Time
If it is true, then why havent we heard anything from Marcia? It seems like she would back our petition if she had so much to gain from the OOT. Also it seems like she would have some power over its being released or not. At least a little say. Wish we had some sources that back this up a bit, but as it is, I don't see that there is really anyreason to believe this all to be fact. Not saying it couldn't be true however. I would like to think it is true, it would give George's fickleness a bit of backbone, giving a bit of purpose to his insanity.

Upcoming DVD covers
Time
I think those covers may have just made up my mind not to buy these things. I thought it would be cool since they were to be two disc sets and could have fit well with the prequel dvds. I never bought the 2004 set or the 05 set, but I thought it was retarded that the widescreen ones were silver, preventing them from blending nicely on the shelf with the prequel trilogy dvds. These covers are making it easy for me to wait until 2007 before buying anything. Also I am sure there will be plenty of these things sitting in the used DVD stores, just as their are plenty of the o4 boxsets. As limited as they may be, I am sure I wont have any trouble getting my hands on them if I decide I want them in the future.

Lord of the Rings - TTT - The Re-Edited Re-Edit Book Cut! (Released)

Unless I am mistaken (and it has been some time since I read the book last) all the flashbacks mentioned are pretty much the order of things in the book. For example after Gandalf meets Aragon and co. is when he tells them about his battle with the balrog, so it makes sense not to show that scene until that point in the film. Sounds like your doing some good work Phillock. I look forward to seeing these sometime (I hope) in the near future.

Lord of the Rings - FOTR - The Book-Cut (Released)
Time
Oh I can't wait to get this, I have been hoping somebody would do an edit like this. Whoever said that the film would not have been a success if it had been filmed this way is right. Nowadays most books are written as if they were films, skipping from scene to scene showing what the different charecters are up to, just like the LOTR films. If the movies were filmed like the book we would have gone halfway through the TTT without hearing a thing about Sam and Frodo, then the second half would have been only about them, this wouldn't keep people attention as skipping from scene to scene does. But for fans of the book, this edit will be a real treat.

Any chance of an alt.bin post? Maybe even in divx (low HD space on my end)?

If you ever get around to making your own edit, I would be very interested in seeing the choices you make in various scenes.

I think I search on the internet for a screen play or something to find where the scene went. I goes right after Madam Giry tells Raul the phantom's story. Right after Raul says "clearly he is a madman" (or something like that) the screen fades to the phantom in his lair, then after the scene is finished it fades to the black and white scene of old Raul in his carriage looking at a stag. It really fits in quite well. The reason it was cut was that they felt it slowed down the ending too much.
