He wasn't only wheelchair bound, but completely paralysed. He communicates via two different colored lights on his wheelchair. The thing has wheels and everything. Even for the year 2006 the technology they had for him was dated. They really should just disregard all of the original series, I wish they would not waste time making episodes to explain the smoothness of Klingon foreheads. If an episode with paralysed Pike were to be shown today he would have a floating hover-wheelchair, a Stephen Hawkin's like voice OR they would have just repaired him with nanobots.

Actually when I first heard rumors of Enterprise, I thought it would be cool if they went with Captian Pike. I think they could make an interesting movie around him. However I am really getting tired of prequels, why not take a different approach and move some 40 or so years past the TNG/DS9/Voyager times. It would be cool to see what new threats are around and to see what old ones are and are not still around.

I honestly hate movies that are all action and no true substance. And it feels like every movie is that way anymore. It is all a bunch of actions and explosions with some scotch taped together poorly written script. Seems the script isn't important these days, what matters is the special effects and well known, good looking actors/actresses. I rarely ever go to the movies anymore because most are such pointless crap. And now I must say, going to see POTC II was the most fun I have ever had watching a piece of pointless crap.

It isn't by any means emotionally moving, it is more like an amusment part ride (ironic). It was a nice break from a week of hard work.

David Gilmour: "No George Lucas Syndrome"
Time
Nobody ever implied that this had anything to do with Star Wars other than the use of the term "George Lucas Syndrom" used by the interviewer, and the fact the George Lucas doesn't "get it" and that he constantly changes what at one point we all felt was a near perfect movie.

Gilmour gets it
Q: What, you don't have George Lucas Syndrome?
A: Nope. We worked on it until we thought it was pretty well perfect. If one were to go change it, whatever you might add would be something you take away as well.

George doesn't.

That seemed to be the point of this thread. Nobody read their own opinion into anything. He gets it because when asked if he would change his album he says that there is no point in changing something that is near perfect.

Quote by Gillean
"Hehehe, now I'm just going to be a jerk! JediFlyer06, if Gilmour was talking about art in general then can you find some of his complaints about the continual changes to a very culturally important piece of art, the DSotM cover artwork (voted fourth greatest of all time)?"

I have never heard the Dark Side of the Moon album art to be a very important piece of art. It is an album cover. You don't see us rallying to preserve our old VHS covers for the Star Wars Trilogy. You don't see an "www.theoriginalindianajonestrilogy.com" trying to petition Lucas to release his Indiana Jones films with their original covers. Covers change on everything. Every album of DSoTM I have ever seen still has the triangle with the rainbow, even if it has a different border or background color. Not to mention the original album art of DSotM is availible in great quality from numerous sources. I am sure if you search google for it you can view the original art with no problem. It is an entirely different concept to change the cover of something instead of changing the actual thing itself. And it is honestly laughable to call the DSotM album an important piece of art. You act like the bloody thing is hanging next to the Mona Lisa in Rome.

Quote by Gillean
I think I better start a website dedicated to the preservation of this important classic!

That seemed like more of a slam towards the whole idea of the originaltrilogy.com to me. Perhaps I took it wrong. However if you think it is silly for people to try to perserve something "the great Master Lucas" doesn't believe to be a worthy representation of his now crappy sci-fi films, why do you come here?

Anyway I have wasted enough time with this. I was just annoyed at Gillean's limited focus and his odd sense of duty at proving Gilmour doesn't really get it, and that he is no better than Lucas.

Just a little recap as to the relevance of this thread.

Gilmour gets it: "Oh, there's nothing I would change about it." "Nope. We worked on it until we thought it was pretty well perfect. If one were to go change it, whatever you might add would be something you take away as well."

Lucas doesn't get it: "The other movie, it’s on VHS, if anybody wants it"

I don't consider myself a huge Star Trek fan, but I do enjoy watching the shows and the movies sometimes, and I know the characters. A lot of the episodes are crap, every now and then they will hit something interesting.

IMHO Star Trek has already worn itself out with the number of episodes and the number of movies, if they make a new one soon I will be happy to go and see it. I really think J.J. Abrams can make something interesting out of it. As far as beating the dead horse, my feelings are that it is already dead and if they ruin it any further it doesn't make that much of a difference. I do think Rick Berman needs turn it over to somebody who still cares about Trek however.

Editing movies ruled illegal
Time
Yeah, how so?

Some one once told me that Wal-Mart edits their DVDs, but that is retarded, and I have seen DVDs that were bought from Wal-Mart and they were not edited.

Also concerning the renting and selling edited movies, from what I understand they buy the originals and when you buy a disc from them you get the original disc along with an edited disc. It seems some people here are taking it to be that they are merely selling content edited bootlegs, which would never have lasted half as long as it has. Things like this have been around for a long time, there used to be places that you could take VHS movies to to be edited, I imagine they would just record over your original with their edited version (but I am not sure, perhaps they gave you a second tape). So if you look at the situation fairly, no harm is really being done to the video industry, they are still getting their money for the film, and the editing place is making a couple of bucks for distributing the films just like any other store that sells DVDs or rents them out. The only real difference is that customers are getting, along with their original DVD, a backup copy with material they find offensive edited out.
By the way, what is the official stance in the US about backing up your legally owned DVDs these days?

Very impressive! I really like the new colors, takes away that fake entirely-filmed-in-front-of-a-green-screen look. I have to agree on the voice however. I have listened to the trailer over and over and over so I could get used to the voice. I like it, but as somebody else said, it does sound a bit filtered, and as everybody else said, it is a little too high to match Anakins look. Also something to bear in mind with the depth of his voice, he doesn't have to sound so much like Vader at this point, for one he is younger, and for another the suit adds a lot of depth to his voice. In ROTJ after his mask is off his voice is not near as deep, also in ROTS he went from his whiney Hayden voice straight to JEJ once he was in the suit. I do like the idea of making his voice deeper though, I thought the line where he said "I hope you like flying" sounded fantastic. Also the "I am here to see my mother" sounded pretty good. And the trailer itself looked great, I really liked the Starkiller Ranch logo with the notes in the background.

Keep up the good work. I have a feeling Attack of the Clones is about to lose its spot on my DVD shelf come November.

So I second Mike O's question. Why do we think the movie sucked?

A Scanner Darkly - First 24 minutes
Time
It's just funny that after watching 24 minutes of the movie (at a really phriggin small size) and C3PX says he wants to see the rest but won't because of a preconceived notion. This animation looks different on the big screen.

It has nothing to do with the "phriggin" small size or any preconceived notion. The animation really bugs me. And if it really does require a cinema sized screen for this movie to be enjoyable, then it will be a useless film once it hits DVD and is played on a "phriggin" small sized TV. And on a side note I think a movie should be enjoyable if you want people to watch it, unless you are some sort of masochist who defines entertainment by watching painful to watch crap (such as the Holiday Special or just about any film with Jim Carry in it).

It seems a lot of people agree with me that this style of animation is unpleasant to watch. I think I, and many others might just enjoy it and even find it to be an enjoyable retelling of a great Phillip K. Dick novel, if it would have been live action. I am very fond of Phillip K. Dick, and I think his works deserve much more attention and care than this. The guy writes a book about the futility of drugs, and they make a movie based off his book that you have to be high to enjoy. You have to admit, the film, as is, doesn't have that wide of an appeal. If it would have been live action it would have a much larger audiance. It is not any preconceived notion the keeps me from seeing this film, if I am ever in want of being annoyed for 60+ minutes, I will most certianly consider watching it.

A Scanner Darkly - First 24 minutes
Time
When I first heard they were making a film version of A Scanner Darkly I wanted to see it, then I saw that it was animated the way it was and I changed my mind. After reading the first post I went to IGN and watched the first 24 minutes. Now I kind of want to see it, but can't. I just can't stand the cell shading. It really does bother my eyes. If they would have just made it live action it would have had such a bigger audiance, pulled in a lot more money, and possibly been a pretty good movie. If they would have made it a REAL animated movie, then it might have been enjoyable to watch, instead it is neither live action or animated, it is in some odd hard to reach place in between. I cannot relate to the world I see on screen, I can't even tell that a character looks like, I found myself squinting at the screen trying to tell exactly how a person should look. It feels like watching a movie through a foggy screen, you want to reach up and wipe the crap off your screen and see a real movie underneath.

The movie over all remained a lot more faithful to the book than I thought it would. It didn't leave anything out (but sometimes they changed the way it happened a little), and they did add a little. It is very correct that there is no way the movie could compare to the cinema of our minds, and narnia was a book written purely with imagination in mind. I was reading a few of the negative reviews of the books on amazon one day, just for fun, and most people complained that the books were too simple and not nearly detailed enough. The way Lewis wrote them they are simple stories giving you only the most important details and your imagination is suppose to fill in the rest, unlike Tolkien who paints you a verbal painting of what a scene is suppose to be. I think in the 50 + years since the books were written we have become more and more robbed our the ability to use our imaginations.
For the ones who have read the book, it is natural for the movie not to match up to the one that was filmed in your mind when you read it.
I have enjoyed the books since I was very young, and I also enjoyed the movie for what it was, a movie. And a movie can never take the place of a book.

That is very true. The guy (Lucas) really doesn't have that much creative genius, sure he came up with the idea, but many people helped him get there.

I have always loved McQuarrie's art. I wonder how the various people who have contributed severly to the look and feel of Star Wars (namely McQuarrie and Williams and any number of model makers) feel about George's "it's all because of me" attitude.

Shadow of the Empire (book)
Time
I have read the book, and I have the abridged audio book, one of the few audio books I own, and I still enjoy listening to it every now and then. The book could have been better writen in some ways but I really liked the whole idea of it.

Xizor (the green guy with the top notch) isn't trying to kill Vader just so he can become the Emperors right hand man as somebody here mentioned. Actually Darth Vader gave the order for some bio weapon to be tested and it nearly wiped out the whole civilization of Xizor's people. He was off planet at the time but his entire family died. He hated the empire and specifically Vader ever since then. What he is trying to do in the book is to kill Luke because he finds out he is Vaders son, and on top of that that Vader is trying to get Luke to join him. So he knows Luke is importand to Vader and he decides that this is a good way to get back at him.

I like the story because it deals more with the underground. Blacksun, whome Xizor is the head of, is a mofia sort of organization. The book also deals alot more with the imperial city, something I always wished would have been in the movies. Leia is captured and Luke, Lando, Dash and Chewie rescue her and blow up Xizor's head quarters. Then as they are escaping the planet Vader blows up Xizor's giant ship and they have to dodge their way through the peices, Dash gets hit by a big chuck a is killed (unless you beat the game on hard, then you learn he lives, for the game anyway).

I suggest skipping the book and checking the audiobook out from the library, I noticed it is one that most libraries seem to have for some reason. Also the comics are good, and the game is still one of my favorites.

The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe: 1979 Animated VS. 2005 Live-Action

Lol. I remember the buck teeth, poor girl. The 1979 animated version isn't that hard to find if you are in the states, like I said in my previous post I have noticed it is availible at Wal-Mart. Check the childrens DVD section. It isn't with your typical DVDs, instead the poor thing resides in the same section with "Barney" and "The Best of Seasame Street".

Another thing I just remembered about the 2005 Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, it is annoyingly non violent. We should at least see a cut or a scrape here or there. The scene where Aslan tells Peter to wipe his sword we don't see a thing. I know it is made by Disney and made for kids, but I remember Sleeping Beauty and the Lion King being considerably more violent.

Oh, I almost forgot. The biggest inaccuracy of the 1979 animated film to the book, was that the animation left out the scene with Father Christmas and instead had Alslan give them their gifts when he first met them. That is one part of the book I have never been able to get over. Even when I read them when I was very young I thought it was weird and kind of lame having Santa Claus show up and give the kids weapons.

Pirates of the Caribbean Two
Time
Some people mentioned that they don't see the appeal to these films. The fact is Pirates are cool, and a rarity. It isn't that people had nothing better to do, it was very highly atticipated. I can't remember the last a good pirate movie came out before Pirates of the Caribbean. In fact the only other Pirate movie I can think of that came out in recent years is Muppets Treasure Island, and being a Muppet movie and all, I don't think it counts. A lot of people have a facination with pirates, a lot of women have a facination with Johnny Depp and/or Orlando Bloom, and a lot of guys don't mind seeing Keira Knightley for 150 minutes. Add those together and you have got some pretty good appeal.

I still haven't seen this yet, I want to but then I don't. I really hate waiting another year to see the end. I'll probably go see it in a few days anyway. I wasn't very excited abou it, but a lot of you guys are saying you really enjoyed it, and it is making me more interested in seein it myself.

The reason I liked the first one so much was that it was as close as we will ever get to a movie adaption of Monkey Island (one of my favorite games of all time). I also couldn't help noticing from the trailer of Dead Man's Chest how many aspects of it related to Monkey Island 2.

Wow, I have never heard of anyone disliking a book because a film version that came out some 55 years later. I was not too impressed with the Lord of the Rings films, but I didn't go chucking away my leather bound copy of the book. The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe film wasn't half as bad as I thought it would be, still it wasn't that great. It was too CG and too Disney. I was impressed, being from Disney and all, that they made it as faithful to the book as they did. I have yet to see any book that has been adapted to film faithfully enough to appease long time fans of the book. TLTWatW was bound to disapoint many long time fans of the book. Come on, don't loose your fondness for the books just because Disney decided to use them to cach in on the Lord of the Rings hype, there are still plenty of copies of the books out there that don't have movie advertisments printed all over them. Also, is the Black Cauldron actually your favorite book of all time? the way you said "I will get around to reading it soon" makes it sound as if you have not yet read it. I am only vaguely familar with the Prydian Chronicles of which it is a member.

The Animated version came out in 79, from what I remember of it as a kid it is very accurate to the book. It is my favorite adaption of the book by far. However, the animation has that 70s 80s animation feel to it so most people to day who watch it for the first time dismiss it merely for its poor (for todays standards) animation. I noticed that (for people in the US) Wal-Mart has it in their childrens DVD section for under $10 (I think it was $7.99).

The 1988-1990 BBC made for TV versions were also pretty good, extremely cheesy by todays special effects standards, as some of the monsters on the queens side are actually cartoons. And all the animals are people dressed up in animal costums. In fact it was even a bit cheesy for 1988 standards, typical budget of made for TV BBC features. They only made The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Price Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and The Silver Chair.

They are actually only three features since they combined Prince Caspian and Dawn Treader together. I think all three are about two hours long each. These are fairly easy to find on DVD. There is a three disc collection of them all, or you can buy them all individualy.

Another thing of interest to fans of the series, there were two different dramatized radio adaptions made, one by the BBC that is fairly old now (don't remember the exact year), and one made by a Christian organization called Focus on the Family that was made just a few years ago. I have not listened to either all the way through, but what I have heard the BBC is more accurate, though I think they cut out a lot, and it feels like the Focus on the Family one takes to many liberties in making unnessicary changes in dialogue.

Actually, if I try to play a disc image using VLC the video really lags and skips also. And due to a crappy DVD drive it often has trouble playing burnt DVDs and my system is just a couple of years old and more than adaquate for what I need it for. So I don't think Ingo nessicarily needed to upgrade his other system specs more than he needed a DVD burner.

Ingo, it is great being able to write DVDs isn't it? I just barely got a DVD writer for my laptop a little over a month ago, I was able to free up so much hd space. Mine doesn't have LightScribe, but I really like the idea of it, the main reason I didn't worry about buying a LightScribe drive was I didn't want to pay extra for LightScribe DVD-Rs. You're lucky you can DL off of myspleen, I live on a university campus and I get my internet free through the universities wireless internet, while I can access myspleen without any trouble, bit torrents themselves are blocked.

The legendary "Starkiller Ranch" Thread
Time
I agree that all these things are pointless. There is really no need to explain the Skywalker thing. For one, what is to say Shmi was the only person carrying the Skywalker surname? We don't learn a whole lot of peoples last names throughout the saga, it might not be all that uncommon of a name. Also I don't see why Vader would be trying to scan through the rebels comm channels. He is trying to shoot them down and defend the Deathstar, whatever they are saying to one another would aid him very little in that task. Also a reaction such as "What?!" or "Skywalker!" would be out of character for Vader, IMHO.
I don't know what new dialogue was added in the 2004 DVDs to the Emporer tells Vader he has a son scene, but in the original versions, if I am not mistaken, he tells Vader that the son of Anakin is still alive and Vader acts unsurprised. If we are trying to explain Vader learning of Luke in Episode 4 in order to have him know of him before the Empire Strikes Back, then what is to say that Vader had not suspected the exsistence of his son long before now. Perhaps he was just too stupid to check with his step-brother who was living on his home planet with an adopted son holding the surname Skywalker, or maybe that was just Lucas' lack of ability to tell a believable story.

Come to think of it, that scene where Anakin jumps out of the speeder always really annoyed me. It is also a scene that I hear smerked at alot.

I never really noticed how Anakin totally ignored Jar-Jar before, that's funny. Of course I noticed Padme ignoring Yoda though. Hmmm I am noticing a pattern here... I think there may be a bit of racism towards CG aliens from real-actor-played-humans going on here. That, or perhaps it is just lousy writting, not sure which.

The "Rain Drops are Falling on my Head" thing was a typical Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell sort of gag. It was meant to be cheesy, if you can appreciate things like that it was pretty funny. Otherwise I can see how it could come off as annoying.

Speaking of Bruce Campbell, I am sure most people who know who he is noticed he had a cameo in both the Spider-Man movies. I heard a rumor he is going to make another appearance in Spider-Man 3 and that this time they are going to give his name... Quentin Beck (the alias of the Spider-Man villan Mysterio). Anybody else hear anything about this? I think it would be pretty cool to have Mysterio in Spider-Man 4, I think Campbell would make a perfect Mysterio.

I agree about the mars track, I like it and I think it works great. Go with it.
About the Dune and Lawrence footage however, in that clip you posted sometime ago they looked pretty good, but the live action and the CGI contrasted quite a bit. Another concern I would have would be the red soldiers from Dune, for anybody who has seen Dune they would be instantly recongnizable. That might be the difference between making this a good replacment for Attack of the Clones or it just being another cool fan edit.

I think MTHaslett has a pretty interesting point with the whole com-link idea. Look back at Star Wars, in the trench run, we see a lot of shoots of x-wings and Y-wings moving through the trench, we see turret firing at them, and we see tie-fighters, but holding all that action together is the pilots communicating via their com systems. Imagine that whole scene without the inside the cockpit shoots and without the pilots communicating with each other and you might have something a slight bit like, but not near as poorly done as the opening battle of the clone war.

Thinking about it, if you cut things a little differently and add in narritive by means of com-link communication, you could possibly make that scene work as part of the movie instead of a jumbled up LucasArts advertisment. Of course you are the one editing it all, so it is for you to say whether this is feasible or not.
