Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)
Time
In Magnolia Fan's Episode I (don't get me wrong, I was very impressed with what he did with that movie) it was really weird to have this random character following everyone around constantly babling on in some language they didn't even know. Or if assume they all do speak gungan, I think the Tatooine school system has its priorities out of order, teaching kids such a obscure language. Bocci wold certianly be time better spent by the poor students . It is just one of those things that in the long run makes this more of a blatant fan edit, when the goal was to make a substitute for the pre existing PT. For TM's edit he only has to worry about a small section, I really hope TM excellent job of ADR in Shround of the Darkside inspires the editors of the Ranch Saga Ep. 1 to look into finding an english voice over for Jar Jar.

Here is a thought. Realistically, no one is bound by one language. If Jar Jar can understand basic, why couldn't he speak it. Let's just assume he is really insecure with his basic during the ep.1 period so he speaks only in gungan and just hopes people will understand him. When years later he is a senator (or vice-senator or whatever he was) for Naboo, surely he would be expected to speak basic (which seems to be a univerisal language) when giving an address to the senate. Or at the very least have somebody translating it for him. My suggestion for TM if it does come down to using an alien voice, would be rather than subtitling the thing, to have it translated into basic by translator, much like you would see in the UN. For example Jar Jar says something in gungan, and another voice repeats it in english. The nice thing about this is you don't have to have Jar Jars voice speaking english, and it is easily assumed the translator is off screen. You would just have to find away to make Jar Jar pause between sentences or something so that the translator has time to speak.

All in all, I still think it would just be more realistic if he spoke basic.

And it isn't a matter of American or not American. Any one in the world can become an American citizen alot easier than they could become a citizen of a lot of countries. American is built on immigration. If you know anything at all about the American legal system, you will know that it has very little to do with race or the country you are from, and a whole lot to do with the size of your bank account. You can expect that any terrorist they capture, even if he is born and raised in America, brown, black, white, yellow, or purple, they are going to be treated the same way. The funny thing about it is the other side wouldn't hesitate to torture an American if they caught him, even if he has no information to give them. It isn't just American lives America is trying to protect. Why don't you find yourself a good history book and check out American track record over the last hunred or so years. There are some black spots, but I would love for you to tell me a country that doesn't.

Secret CIA prisons
Time
I don't know if you have ever actually lived in America, but they have far too many rights. So many it is too the point of harming the American society. If you can afford a good enough lawyer, and if you can get people on your side, you CAN get away with murder. You can get away with anything. If they have somebody that can give them some good information, that persons rights get in the way. Hypothetically the CIA could have a known terrorist in their hands, one who has information that could save the lives of a good number of people, but because of his rights there is no way to get it out of him. Of course they do things in secret, the average Joe can't stand the thought of violence outside of the context of video games, TV and movies. Violence is sometimes a necessary evil, it always has been, now we are just living in an overly sensitive age.

Quote from Arnie.d:
"It gives a very wrong message when you want to spread democracy and justice and at the same time having secret prisons and denying your prisoners the justice system you want to spread."

It is something very different. It isn't even comparible. It isn't the American justice system they are trying to spread, and even if it is, this doesn't even add up. I promise you a "secret prison" in America and a "secret prison" in Iraq, Iran, Afganistan, and so on, are very different things. The Americans don't just throw somebody into their secret prisons because somebody disagreed with the President. It is not quite as menacing as you seem to think it is, but more menacing than the Americans or Eurpeans can handle.

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)

Has anybody ever actually seen two people carrying on a conversation with each other in two different languages? I have not, not unless neither one knows the others language and in that case they are not really carrying on a conversation. If you stop and think about it the scene with Greedo (and later with Jabba in ANH) was really odd, Han is speaking in basic, and Greedo in what I will assume is Huttese (or Rodian), and they both understand each other perfectly. I am bylingual, and I know how confusing it is to try to think in two different languages at once. If Han knew Huttese, which he had to to understand Greedo, then why not speak in Huttese, or for Greedo why no speak Basic. I think George was trying to make his galaxy seem larger and more complex than one of the major sci-fi shows at the time, Star Trek, where everybody spoke English no matter where you went. I think that was a great idea, and it is cool having alien languages in subtitles. They did a really good job of this in ROTJ where they have to have threepio translating everything Jabba says and then translating things back for Jabba, same goes for their interaction with Ewoks.

However, I think having Jar Jar speak in a subtitled alien language would be a huge mistake. Someone like Han understanding Greedo when he speaks Huttese is one thing, it is believable, but for everyone to understand Gungan? That is a bit far fetched. Especially since we never even hear of them until ep.1. One reason I have not seen fit to replace The Phantom Menace's spot on my shelf with balance of the force or any other edit, is because they always have subtitled Jar Jars, and it just doesn't work. I am happy some other people, including TM have expressed simular ideas, I just felt like posting this because a lot of people still seem to think subtitles are just fine. Lucasfilm releases a lot of low quality crap these days, but even that would be too low quality for them. The goal of this edit is to be a step or two or ten above the quality of the original release. Just a thought.

GOOD BYE, OLD FRIENDS...
Time
Come on everyone, just get off Jay's case. If you have read all the post over the last many days you can kind of put together both sides of the story. In case nobody has noticed, Jay has put a lot of time an effort into this site over the last three years, to me it is ashame that so few people seem to have a respect for that. Obviously he felt like he was having his toes stepped on. He has had these plans for a fan edit site for a long time now, and so far OT.COM has been the best fan edit site on the net. It was a bit rotten to go behind his back with it all. Okay, before you attack me with the same thing that has been said over and over about that last line, even if it wasn't anybodies intention to go behind Jay's back, that is the way it seemed to Jay. He felt his forum was being hijacked. If you go over to the other site right now, you might realize that his feelings are not so far fetched.

Many of us have been here a long time, we have seen Jay and the way he works. Of course his recent behavior is rather different than usual. We all act differently when we are angry or upset, don't go around whinning about what a rotten jerk Jay is being. Don't complain about how he hasn't been around. Let him cool off. He has been under contant fire for the last 10 or so days. Boon like an idiot keeps jabbering on about not being able to link to his site. Maybe Jay is over reacting a bit, but I can't blame him, maybe if he was left alone for a bit he might lighten up a bit. Also the internet is a rough place to hold a conflict, an arguement that might be over in 20 minutes face to face can last weeks when it is done in text. Misunderstandings are also very easy to come by when we can only communicate in text. I have been gone for a few days, but mostly what I see here is Dayv (I like the guy too don't get me wrong) being a drama-queen, Warbler following closely in his footsteps, and boon being a patronizing ass. He never says anything new, all he does is patronize the hell out of Jay and Zion. The fire is never going to cool if every one keeps feeding it.

None of us thought badly about Jay this time last month, right? Now we are considering him a dictator? Jay hasn't changed! He is the same old Jay. If he doesn't want anyone to link to a certian site, why shouldn't we just respect that?

I know this is already a long post, but I must say one more thing. It is a little unsettling to go to the so called "sister site" and see all the same names as here. It is amazing how quickly people will abandon you for so little. If people want to be part of both communities then good, but please don't jump ship so quickly an abandon OT.com altogether. It literally feels like we are being split in two, that wont do either group much good, it is better if we all ban together. Or at least forgive and forget and try to keep the two communities as close as possible.

Ingo, why don't you keep one thread in which you make all your odd infantile rants in instead of making a new one every couple of days. I believe you are going to quickly drop yourself into resident troll status, if you don't already hold that title. Yeah, I agree. Why the mean spiritedness, just because he is a child actor and you are not. That is hardly fair. I don't know, that kid just creeps the snot out of me. I guess his creepiness is what made him work as an actor. Honesly he was perfect for AI, but beyond that I am not particularly fond of him as an actor but no reason to wish him to fail.

Am I to understand from this that there will be a GameCube and a wii version of Twilight Princess? If this is that case it seems really odd. When I first saw the video of Twilight Princess I couldn't believe how cool it looked. It kind of brought back the excitment I had during those years leading up to Ocarina of Time. I nearly thought to buy a GameCube just for this game (the positive reviews for the two Rogue Squadron games were also factored in) but I am happy I didn't because I heard it wouldn't come out for the GC. Wow, that is wierd isn't it? A Nintendo system lacking in a quarter of the way decent Mario or Zelda game. Hmm, and the name 'GameCube' it always makes me want to grab my zip board and dart under it.

It also takes a lot of conditioning. I suppose these people really believe that the western world is the ultimate evil. As for the freedom born types? I suppose they must have some problems of their own. All of us have moral values built into us. Even a hardend atheist believes it is wrong to kill, even though he would say we are all merely highly evolved animals. Even if he were to say killing a person isn't much different than killing an animal, you can bet he would feel great remorse if he were to kill someone himself. We are born with it. I was talking to a U.S. Army chaplin (a priest that is deployed with the soilders to be there to pray with them and take confessions or whatever else) some months ago, he had just come back from Iraq. He talked about how the soilders would feel after having killed in battle, and would go to him for help, and how a few of the soilders would get past the point of feeling remorse and that killing would become second nature to them. He said it is very dangerous when they get to this point and that one of the main reasons the U.S. Army employs chaplins is to help keep the soilders from getting to that point. There are other ways people can lose this remorse, there are cases where somebody is born without it, or sometimes they snap under the pressure of tramatic experience, or perhaps from a very tramatic childhood. I agree, in the case of these western born terrorist, there must be more to it than just religious beliefs. Maybe over a long period of time of being taught these things. It is scary to think that somebody born and raised in America or Great Britian, and taught in those school systems, can be brought to the point of not only attempting to killing men, women, and children but attempting to kill hundreds of them at a time.

It seems that too often people try to look at these things from too secular of a view point. If you do not believe in God that is just fine, but these people do. That is the point. It isn't about past events that make them willing to do these things. They believe that this life is temporary, and that if they die to please Allah then they have their one-way ticket to heaven in their pockets. Let us look back a few years to an incident that lead to America's entry into WWII. Remember the Japanese Kamikaze fighters? They also had no regard for their own lives. Why? Because the Emperor claimed to be god and they believed they would be greatly rewarded in the next life for their sacrifice in this life. You don't get atheists to commit suicide in this manner, when you believe this life is all there is, then you don't willingly throw it away to achieve an ends you won't be part of. That is why we never had this problem with the Communists. Remember MAD? Mutual Assured Destruction. They had nuclear weapons aimed at the U.S. and the U.S. had nuclear weapons aimed at them, the idea of MAD was they fired on the U.S. the U.S. would fire back on them assuring the mutual destruction of both parties. Therefore it would not have benefited either party to fire on the other. You know what is scary? MAD doesn't work with these new threats. You can be sure that if they obtain nuclear weapons they are going to use them regardless of the knowledge that the U.S. may also use them. Because in their minds, this life isn't the end. It is easy to understand why the home grown terrorists do what they do. They too are Muslims and have the same beliefs. If they can be taught to believe that this life is not the end and that they will be given great rewards for their sacrifices, then there is no limit to what they might do.

Please don't think I am anti-Muslim or anything. I don't know if we have any Muslims in these forums or not, I have nothing against them. I have good friends who are Muslims and they are completely against all these attacks. I am not trying to stereotype and make them all out to be people willing to strap dynamite on their chests.

General PC Games Discussion.
Time
That last PC game I ever played was Jedi Academy, I had nearly beaten it and I uninstalled it because I needed the disk space. Since then I have tried playing it again, and I have tried playing other games but I just can't get hooked like I used to, now after just a short while of playing I get tired of it and feel like reading a book instead. There are all these cool games I want to play but I just can't get into any of them. I must be turning into an old man. Hmmm, I think I'll go sit in my recliner and take a nap.

Back on the topic, anybody ever play any of the Escape Velocity games? There are three of them, first two are Mac only, but they made a port of the third one for PC. That is a game I wish came out when I was in high-school when I had too much time on my hands.

If you are so confident you can sue him and win, why don't you stop hanging around here and adding more "Hate Lucas" "Lucas is Stupid" threads to our already painfully infinite supply of them and go out and sue him. If you are over thriteen and have the ability to sue Mr. Lucas then go and do it, but please leave OT.com out of your silly little crusade, we have no wish to be associated with the embarassment you will be. I remember high school, all the drama and craziness of those days really doesn't mean a lot anymore. I remember my first year at college, it was fun because all the jocks and popular guys and girls were no longer so popular and were learning for the first time that their popularity doesn't mean much in real life. I was never popular in high school, I probably fit pretty well into the loser catagory. I was never very popular with girls. And I have always had a hard time knowing how to act around them. I have always had a horrible time with eye contact. Even if it wasn't a girl I liked I would have a hard time not getting nervous. I am way past that now. I think a lot of guys have that problem and I think it is something most of us mature out of with very little trouble. Also once you get past the high school or college part of life, you might just find some girl who is extremely beautiful, and who finds you to be a really cool guy just for being the way you are. One who stares at you and listens in great interest everytime you talk about Star Wars or anime even though she could careless about them, but still loves to hear about them just because they are important to you. That is exactly what happened to me, and now I have been happily married for over a year.

It is funny looking back at those girls that sent my stomach into knots for weeks on end, the ones that made it hard for me to think of anything else. I have to laugh looking back. None of them matter anymore, just faces in year books gathering dust. It'll pass pal. Your life is just getting started, you're young and even though it hurts now just thinking of that girl, there are millions of others out there. Also, sounds like she is a pretty good friend? Friends are worth a lot, especially at your age. You might find she is worth a lot more as just friend than a girl friend. Relationships are not always friendship's best friend, this I also know from personal experience.

If Star Wars flopped....

Wow, imagine all the things that would be different. Look at our pop culture and how much Star Wars has influenced it. You can see it in so many movies from E.T. - Toy Story 2. Watch the credits to ANY (excluding foreign and independant films) movie and you are going to see at least one of "Skywalker Sound" "Industrial Light and Magic" and even if you don't see the first two, more likely than not "THX" is going to pop up. Not too likely any of those would have come about if it hadn't been for the success of Star Wars. Walk into any Wal-Mart or Toys R Us or even just about any store really, and since 1995 till now you are almost certian to find the name "Star Wars" somewhere in that store. This is not true with Lord of the Rings or anything else.

McCallum. I just can't find any repect for a butt kisser and McCallum is the poster child for the term butt kisser. Remember the old Falcon and X-Wings? They were battery operated but all they did was make this electronic buzzing sound. I remember the Y-Wings was my favorite because it had the turrent on the top that swivled and had a place where you could put R2 or R4.

Long before they came out with the telescoping sound FX things, we would take broom handles and make a hilt out of duct-tape or electrical tape. We would do actual dueling but it sometimes got pretty painful on the fingers. Honestly the most fun was when my friend and I would plan out a certian fight, we would practice it for a bit in slow motion and then eventually get to the point where we could really go fast and look like we were having a real duel, we would show off with it whenever we got the chance and impress the other kids who didn't know we had the whole thing planed.

Info: Some thoughts on this community.
Time
I do think all this fighting and Lucas bashing is childish. A lot of us have been looking forward to the X0 projext for a long time and have expected it to the best we will ever get. There was a fleeting moment of sceptical excitment when this new set was announced, since then further news has been disappointing. To say all the people waiting for the X0 are a bunch of pirates, I must ask, how many times must I buy this movie before I legally own a copy of it? The only DVD version I have is the old TR47s, I own more legal versions of the film than I can even think of off the top of my head. I have wasted so much money on those relics wasting away in boxes than I care to know. Most of the other OOT fans here also own numerous versions each. I would go as far as to bet each of them owns at least one if not more legal sets of this trilogy. How much do we need to spend before we are allowed to own a DVD-R backup of laserdiscs many of us already own without being given grief about it. If these exact DVDs that are coming in September had come out in the late 90s when the DVD thing was just taking off and the quality standards were lower, I think we all would have been happy, and OT.com probably never would have been concieved. Maybe we would be asking for a higher quality set by 2007 for the 30ths saga boxset, but my point is that back then it would have been acceptable. Now it is pretty lame to be releasing such a joke of a DVD. A 2006 DVD release of any movie, regardless of when it was filmed, ought to kick the pants off of its ten year old counterpart Laserdisc release.

That said, I used to think Lucas was this amazing person, my favorite movies had his name on them, my favorite games had his name on them, I really thought he was something. Now when I look at the things he makes, all the way from the products of his gaming company (I don't really blame the crap they now come up with on him) to his most recent three film (which is all he has made in an amazingly long amount of time, I see a lot of potiential that has been lost for the sake of making large amounts of money with as little effort as needed taking place. I used to expect great things when his name was present, now I expect crap. I can't really help that, it isn't my fault that he and his companies decided to hang the idea of quality. If some people still think they are getting greatness whenever they see his name tacked onto something, then I am happy they have lower standards than me. Some people still flock to the store everytime a new John Grisham novel is released, and some of us have decided we are tired of reading the same old story recycled and rereleased over and over again. I don't think there is a point in hating Lucas, nobody here really even knows him to really hate him. It is just a reaction to their continual disappointment. Honestly they need to get over it, it has been over ten years now, they really need to see reality. Those of us that are used to disappointment after three trips to the cinema we waited years for know better than to get too exited about these DVDs. If this new release turns out to be wonderful, and everything we ever dreamed for despite not being anamorphic, great. In that case some of our old faith in George will probably be restored. Judging by the record, it isn't too likely, please forgive us for our pessimism.

It is funny the shock American friends get when they visit here, they think we're all attacking each other when we're just having fun. Of course now I've written that I'll find out C3PX is from the home of sarcasm, Australia!

Ha! That is a pretty funny observation. From my experience in America, Americans can be pretty sarcastic. I must admit some of them are unbelievably dry; I can't count how many times I have received confused or annoyed looks from one after making some facetious comment. Especially the office workers or computer tech types, they all seem to take everything seriously. All around Europeans are a lot more fun and laid back. But generalizing in such a way is pretty pointless; I have known people from plenty of other places that take life way too seriously also. It is very hard not to realize that regardless of being American, Australian or whatever else, sarcasm can be a bit hard to pickup in written from. Also the line about Dark side of the Moon hanging next to Mona Lisa was meant in an ironic tone.

Also I thought it was funny that I mistakenly said "Next to the Mona Lisa in Rome." When I have been to the Louvre in France and have seen the real thing.

Yeah, I stopped watching Enterprise after just a short while also, but when it was announced that the show was being cancelled they decided to use all the ideas they had been planning to use eventually. Some of these ideas sounded interesting so I starting watching it again for a bit. They came up with some stupid thing that the Klingons tried using the eugenics drugs (you know, the whole Khan thing), but since the drugs where for humans it turned the Klingons heads smooth, and then I guess it became contagious or something and spread. It honestly didn't make any sense, and I was only half watching it, I was in disbelief they actually decided to devote a two part episode to explain 1960s lack of makeup technology on a budget. I think at this point I stopped watching the show again. I did see the final which really couldn't have been any worse than it was. I think it even beat Voyager as Star Trek's worse series final.
