The Most Needlessly Melodramticly-titled Thread Ever
Time
What a loss. I suppose now that all the "important people" left, there is no reason for any of us to be here any longer. Though if you look in the fan edit or preservation topics (you know, the ones relevent to the title and purpose of the site and to the art of fan editing) you wont see too many post bearing the name of these "most important people" anyway. However, if you look in the "Rankings" thread, you will find the majority of crappy fluff they have posted over the years. It is funny how little impact the supposed mass exodus had on this site as a whole. Unfortunately since then a nearly 100% tolerence for trolling has been adopted. It never ceases ro amaze me how much free time some people have on their hands.

Ooh! I just thought I might add, I love the way all the FE guys have changed there pic to dayv's DV helmet. I guess it is suppose to give us the eriee effect of dayv always watching us. So now everytime we are reading an old post it will be like ooooh theres dayv, the overly sensitive guy with the broken keyboard. Really classy stuff. Maybe tonight we can all get together and TP the principals house.

**Spoilers**

So, yeah, I saw the film last night. It's fairly well-done.

Um... How is that a spoiler?

Oh...I was actually going to write a long review at that time, but then deleted what I wrote and just replied. I messed up at that time.

Ah, see my guess would have been that after Die Another Day everybody expected it to be a pile of crap, and crazyrabbits' spoiler was actually the fact that it was "fairly well-done".

Hey switch, you should call that number at the end of the credits that it gives to call if your movie going experience was not up to standards.

Saddam Hussein Sentenced To Death
Time
Hmm, quite a few said they would like to see it on pay-per-view. Perhaps video games and movies have made us feel we are prepared for any kind of violence. But I certianly hope nobody here really thinks they could sit and enjoy watching somebody (even Sadam) hang to death. Wriggiling and strugling while he pisses all over himself, unless he is lucky, then his neck will break and there wont be much of a show. Either way, if something like that were to be shown on pay-per-view, you know the world is growing too sick. If you read about certian oppressive governments, they used to force citizens to watch "traitors" hang to death. Talk to any one witnessed such things and the will tell you how they couldn't sleep for months without the image of the convulsing man dangling by his neck entering their dreams. I don't think anybody here seriously would enjoy such a thing.

Chronicles of Narnia (The movie) striking similarities with The Lord of the Rings (the movie)(s)
Time
I never felt it was a ripoff. It was obvious that they were trying to cash in on the LOTRs success. I have been a fan of the books since I was old enough to read, and I am a fan of a lot of Lewis' other works as well as Tolkien's. I felt narnia was too bright colored and that the fact that the kids just walked into another world didn't seem to be that impressive to the kids and thus not to the audience either. I know the books are very light childrens books, but I was just thinking the other day how interesting would it have been had Narnia been portrayed as a more surreal wonderland kind of place. More kin to something Tim Burtin would direct (odd I say that, because I really don't like Burtins films much). I think it could have worked. Instead you have exactly good and exactly bad, I think it all should have been more dark. Who do we trust? In the book Edmund felt the queen was good and that the beavers were really the bad ones, in the film Edmund is just stupid. We should be wondering, is the queen really evil? And we should be more skeptical about the beavers. Then the film could have carried itself on the wonder of the odd, cold world around them, rather than adding in breaking ice and constant wolf attacks. As the ice melts the world could grow brighter, more pleasant and less Tim Burtinesque.

The personal hygiene thread
Time
This is the kind of discussion I can really get into. I am really weird about personal hygiene, and it baffles me at time how many people think it is weird. I brush my teeth at least two times a day. I find it interesting how many American's seem not to brush their teeth very often. I live in America, and I really haven't come across too many (in my line of work) who have nasty teeth and a reeking bad breath, but I have come across them at other places. I think people higher up on the social latter would be more likely to shower everyday and brush between meals.

One of the biggest things that bothers me in America is the lack of the bidet. It seems so much more advanced, so civilized. Here, I feel slightly more advanced than the ape as I wipe with little pieces of paper.
That is one of the things I love about America, everybody claims to be so very advanced, the greatest nation in the world and all that. Yet, they still pick poop out of their behinds with their own hands. No meaning to bash Americans, I live here, I do it too. But I find it interesting how they refuse to adopt the bidet. It costs a ton of money to have one installed if you live here, that is if you have a bathroom with enough room for one in the first place. The bidet is great, you just sit down, turn on the water, stand up, dry off and you walk out. Great stuff, saves a lot of time. Using toilet paper seems very little different than if you were to take a shower by rubbing paper towels all over your body. But I guess that is just me.

And finally, my take on the hand washing issue. I myself not only find it odd to not wash your hands after, but also find it a little sick to not wash your hands before. Think of all the nasty things you have been touching before touch your penis? Kind sick I think. I always wash before and after. Also about the door handle thing, I actually take an extra bit of paper towel and use that to open the door. Now since a lot of places are trying to save money they no longer have paper towel, only electric hand dryers. I feel totally defeated when I get ready to leave a restroom with an inward swinging door, and no paper towel. Fortunately, this is a very rare combination.

And for the guy who said he never brushes his teeth because nobody ever tells him he has bad breath or food in this teeth. I have talked to plenty of people who have had very bad breath, and I have never once said anything. If you were to say to somebody that they have bad breath, in many cultures, America included, it would be considered very rude to say anything to them about it. Perhaps you would fit into society better if you are more presentable and pleasant to talk to. That said, I never comb my hair.

In the states Oliver and Company is as common to see in the DVD store as Beauty and the Best or The Little Mermaid. Excellent kids movie though. Remember when Disney use to release movies that were at lease loosley based on classic liturature? Those where good times. Now we only get computer generated features about talking automobiles and vertically challenged chickens.

Star Wars Wall Paper I Made!
Time
I for one enjoy the confused mish mash of things from one movie appearing on the poster for an entirely different movie. I feel it is a fantastic artistic representation of how unbelievably messed up the SE truely is. However, I am quite disappointed in the ROTJ poster, I feel it is truely lacking by not having an image of either Jar Jar or Hayden.

Also I think the PT posters are great. Come on, who didn't expect something great when they first saw that Phantom Menace trilogy? Of course we were all disappointed, but I for one still expected something great when I first saw the AotC poster, and I was again disappointed. When I first saw the ROTS poster it was hard for me to take it seriously with the goofy images of Palpatine and Padme. I didn't expect greatness from it at all, and yet I was still sorely disappointed.

One other detail on these posters I find perfect, is that though they are all by the same artist, the PT all say EPISODE in large writing, while the SE all say their names, notice how it is even called Star Wars instead of ANH. I think this signifies the lack of continuity between the two trilogies.

Ha ha! I'll save the gloating until SOTDS is in my DVD player and fully functioning without any glitches. But yeah, I remember posting that- that was a while ago. I think it was more irritation that I wasn't getting good, intelligent feedback like I'm getting with you guys. This thread was originally in General Discussion, and I didn't feel like people were taking me seriously. And they weren't, of course

Yeah, I remember when you first posted, I think I was just a lurker then. I remember laughing along at their posts, I honestly thought you were some silly 13 year old who had decided to redub the movie with a PC mic. Ha ha. But as time went on you persisted, so I kept following the thread with great interest. I think it was things like changing day time scenes to night time scenes that made me confident that this would be something worth watching out for. Ever since seeing your trailer I have been pretty sure this thing would replace AotC on my dvd shelf. I couldn't believe how torrible AotC was when I first saw it, so you are going to have to blow this thing really badly to make me change my mind abou that.

Star Wars prequel film noir (* unfinished project *)
Time
Wow, looks better in black and white than I would have imagined. Really kicks down the CG look. I could almost believe it was a movie from the 50s. I am very thankful for the ROTS novelization. It at least gives me a telling of the story of Anakin Skywalker I can somewhat enjoy, it is so poetic. I think Stover did a remarkable job given the material he had to work with. I think a lot of the VO for this could be taken straight from the novel with only minor tweaking, just as you did here. I love how you used the "This is how it is to be Anakin Skywalker" it sounded perfect. I think your voice fit quite well also. I really, really hate that scene, but it wasn't too bad in its new context. I would love to see the rest of the movie. Hey, Spence, you should try some scenes from the video game and use the b&w effect you used on this scene and see how they look. I still can't imagine them looking very fiftiesish, but then again I never thought that scene could look as great as it did. I did however feel the pace of the music was all wrong for that scene, but as you said, it was just thrown together real quick.

Old school Consoles on Ebay
Time
You only have 63 games listed for the NES and only 17 listed for the SNES. Also, those shipping prices are nuts. That's why I never buy anything off ebay. I though about buying an SNES (why did I ever sell mine) a while back, but they are all unbelievably expensive these days, and it just makes more sense to use emulators and roms along with a SNES controller adaptor (about $12). Takes up a lot less space. Most computers can connect to TVs these days anyway, and the signal can be changed to NTSC or PAL, useful for those of us who get around.

Judging by the trailer, it looks like he is more serious. Yeah, Spidey's sarcasm is definately lacking in the films. But I guess only pre-movie Spiderman fans will realize this.

The Lord of the Rings (Films vs. the Books)
Time
Some people may not like the books, and that is just fine. But to say they are not well written? That is a bunch of crap. You can't just say something is not well written because you don't like it or it isn't your cup of tea. I am not the biggest fan a Shakespeare, which is weird because I am big time into classic lit, but for some reason William does very little for me. But if I were to go about saying Macbeth is poorly written, who am I kidding. Just because you don't like Hemingway, doesn't mean Hemingway couldn't write. I am not a Tolkien worshipper who thinks the man could do no wrong, I guess for some reason LOTR fans get stereotypes this way. Oh yeah, that and that they can all read Elvish because they are super geeks who have nothing better to do. Which is unfortunate because there are some pretty big Shakespeare fanatics out there and for the most part they don't get picked on. When Tolkien wrote the Lord of the Rings, he set out to write an epic, like Beowulf or the Iliad. Quite honestly, I am thrilled with his results. You say it is long and meandering? It is long, but it is very poetic. If you are into that kind of stuff you can get thrills reading it. I for one love the poetic tone of Tolkien. I find it fantastic. I can just pick of the book and open it to just about anywhere and start reading it out loud and the troubles of the day melt away for a bit. I find it quite relaxing. As I mentioned before, I am a big literature nerd, I get kicks out of things like this. One of the biggest problem with the book the Lord of the Rings today, is that nobody really reads anymore. They read Danielle Steel and John Gresham. Nothing against either writer, but their books are just fluff, movies in the form of books. The most literary most people get these days is Stephen King and to my standards he is still just fluff. By today's writing standards there are certain rules if you want to be published. One of these is keeping the plot straight forward and as simple as possible. Anything that is not needed to progress the story needs to tossed out. I find this very unfortunate, because in the past books have managed to be very deep, more than just a story. By today's standard Victor Hugo's work would have never seen the light of day, fortunately for us, in his day they paid you by the page. As a result, we have these beautiful thick works of Hugo's that seemingly go on forever, but if you can get into it, you just might love every word. Let's look at Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea. I hope some of you hear have read it, I think it is still required high-school reading, if not are schools are worse off these days than I thought. The Old Man in the Sea is a very short book, and it is an even more simple story. If we go with the logic of cut out what is not needed, we have an old has been of a fisherman going out to fish, being drug for three days by a marlin, finally catching it strapping it to the side of his ship, being attacked by sharks who eat his catch, finally making it home a beaten and broken man, while his fellow fishermen see the skeleton of the fish he caught they are in awe and no longer consider him a has been. You could write the story out much, much shorter than it already is, many parts of the book may be considered by some to meander, but there is so much more that happens in the Old Man and the Sea than just all that. I think today's standards of writing are flawed, and are the result of us having very little other than the typical McNovel as some have come to call them (McDonald's = fast food, quick, simple. + Novel. ) They are all just books that add on mental calories with no real intellectual gain, which are the books you find at the top of the bestsellers list, not because they are complex and thought provoking, but because they are simple and quick easy reads.

I certainly enjoyed the movies when they came out, I own them all on DVD even. I felt some of the changes were a little off and didn't make sense. I felt the exclusion of the Tom Bombadil section was understandable. Though it was a clever section of the book, it was a long subplot and for an abridged film version it made sense to remove it and have the Hobbits obtain their swords from Strider instead. Other changes bothered me much more.

The biggest thing I have against the movies is that they brought the story of the Lord of the Rings to a much larger crowed. Now everybody thinks they know the story of LOTR, yet they would probably believe the Lord of the Rings of the title is referring to Frodo. Lord of the Rings used to be this great secret. This wonderful work of literature and we all knew the story. If you found another Lord of the Rings fan it was great. Now you find a Lord of the Rings fan, and there is a good chance they have never read the books, and might even go as far to say the books suck and that it is great it was made into a movie. Another thing about the movie is that now, anytime I recommend the book to a friend and they actually read it, they already know what happens, and in their mind Elijah Wood is Frodo.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

I believe TM meant that if somebody is religious all their lives, and they die, they loose nothing. They cease to exist never having been none the wiser. If an atheist dies, and it turn out there is a god, then he does have a lot to loose.

Also judging by the last post zombie made, I am starting to become pretty sure he is pulling this stuff out of the clouds, and really has no idea what he is talking about. I have done a lot of study in Biblical archeology, there is nothing to claim the Jews were polytheistic. There were several times throughout history when many of them fell away from God and worshiped idols or false gods, but they never flip flopped on their own God. You have been terribly misinformed about this matter. And if you are claiming that the Old Testament depicts multiple gods, then I know you have no clue as to what you are saying. Maybe some scientist wrote a book about this or something, and since you whole heartedly trust all scientists so it has to be true. There are several names for God used in the Old Testament, this doesn't give any basis for claims that the Jews were polytheists, your whole thing about the translation trying to hind this fact is not true. Also you keep claiming that as you are bashing believers that you aren't really, you are just bashing flat-eathers. Okay, I really don't think there are any flat-earthers here. If there are, I too will take up a hammer and assist you in bashing them. Stop using this ridiculous excuse. I agree with you that it is undisputable that the earth is round, anybody today will agree with you, save for the same people who claim we have never gone to the moon.

You still keep claiming that you are not bashing religious people, I guess you have failed to read your own posts. I just wanted to post something real quick. No where in the Bible will you find Mary deified. Jehovah, Yahweh, the Elohim are all the same God. Jehovah isn't even a Biblical name for God. It is actually a mixture of two names for God, I wont go into details here. Zombe, why does it bother you so much people believe differently than you? Our "ignorance is doing you no harm, also you are extremely ignorant to religion. And example of that is that you said Christianity evolved from Platonism, this is entirely untrue. Also if we are so sure of the big bang theory and there is so much evidence, then how could there still be theist scientists? You said you could get 50 scientist in the same room and get them to agree, that fact that you said this proves you have no idea what you are talking about. You wont even be able to take 20 and get them to agree. And last of all, since we are so ignorant we get to enjoy life in ignorant bliss as you say. Very well, we will enjoy our lives, and in the end we wont have to fear death. Sounds good to me. But I don't think we are so blissfully ignorant. You claim you do your own research and that you are well educated. I am not quite seeing this. The fact you gave the Jesus Seminar even a modicum of value shows you have no idea what it even was.

The Space Program
Time
There is plenty of money to go all around. I think it is pretty hypocritical that we all say it is such a waste of going to space and that more money should be thrown at homeless people, when at the same time none of us here would hesitate to throw away $20 on a new DVD, while that $20 bucks could have helped out a lot of starving children. Honestly, we thrown away money on everything, NASA isn't setting us back any, and like Chaltab said, it forces us to innovate. Who knows what new technology could be discovered that could benefit the world situation. If the money wasn't being spent on NASA, you can bet it would not be spent t feed the homeless. I have been around, and I have seen things most people living in America wouldn't believe. The dollar + tax we spend everyday on our McDonald's dollar menu could go a long way to helping the worlds hunger issue. I think if we go with the logic that NASA is a waste of money, then so are movies. Look at the budget for Spider-man 3, that could go a very long ways in helping the poor. At least with NASA we are developing new technology. I guess I have a strong fondness for the space program, it is a money guzzler, but look at it. We are exploring the unknown. Boldly going where no man has gone before! Man, I always wanted to be an astronaut! Curse my pathetic near sighted eyes!

Dude, your proving my point. I never said the trouble is that we disagree. Every time somebody says something you disagree very vocally and annoyingly. Plenty of people have thought likewise to you and have gotten on just fine with the folks around here. You constantly complain about the way we think. Perhaps it is you who can't stand people disagreeing with you. I have no problem with your disagreements.

Remember when...
Time
I remember when Lord of the Rings and Star Wars were still cool. Those were good ol' days.

I also remember when people didn't lie about their age so they could make seemingly more valid arguments. Gomer Pile claimed to be 35, that would have made some where around 6 years old when Star Wars came out, and 9 when Empire Strikes Back came back. Yet he claims to remember very well seeing it in the theater for the first time. What kind of nine year olds sit around talking about how Lucas is loosing his touch, or really cares about people saying Lucas is loosing his touch. Also for a 35 year old he sure has a lot of time to burn posting 321 posts in a month patronizing people for disliking the PT. If he is telling the truth about being 35 I am willing to bet he lives in his mum's attic. Sorry Gomer, I guess that was a low blow, but you are really getting annoying. You seem to have a problem letting others have their own opinions. You disagree with everybody. Lighten up man. We all have our own opinions, you don't have to beat us over the head with yours. We are happy to hear your opposition, but it is getting old reading you write the same thing over and over every other post for the last month. I am not meaning to attack you so hard, but if you notice other people seem annoyed at you also, just trying to help you gain respect amongst the community.
