BTW, I don't care what anyone else says, but the crawl on the GOUT is the original crawl, not a recreation.

I am sure this has been covered again and again and I somehow managed to miss it, but do you happen to know or have a theory on what the source for the crawl that appears on the GOUT? None of the LDs ever used the "A New Hope"less crawl did they? I had always assumed it was a recreation because it seems like that would be the easiest way to go, rather than editing in some other material. Is the crawl in Empire of Dreams a recreation? Or is it also authentic? Feel free to ignore these questions if this subject has been exhusted before. If my curiosity on the matter gets too strong I can always just skim back through posts from last September.

They have been being tweaked since the very beginning. Long before 1993. The change in the crawl is evidence of this. Only before 1997 no one really noticed the changes too much, and most of those who did didn't see them as too big of a deal. The 1997 special edition seemed like a cool idea, but I don't think any of us were expecting it to be the "death" of the films as we knew them.

Yes, since it is a transfer of the laserdisc. Before the GOUT we only had fan reproduced 1977 opening crawls.

Good thinking.

Never let it be said that this community's anal-retentive attention to detail doesn't find new stuff regularly. I'm impressed.

davey, even if he can ship to the UK, do you have a VCR that can play NTSC? Huh, I wonder what that eleven minute promo is. I also wonder if my old VHS has it. I bought mine used from a video rental place. The box was chopped up so it could fit into the clam shell tape case and it has stickers from the store all over it. I wish I had access to it, but it is all packed away. Probably doesn't have the promo anyway, but I am still very curious to know what the promo stuff was.

The Future™ Thread
Time
Isn't it interesting to think of the age we live in. Imagine if fifty years from now are grandchildren could access these forums and read all our posts. How foreign and alien it would seem to them. All these upcoming movies we say we are really looking forward to, they will have probably never seen any of them, and will have no idea what they are. They would read our quotes and references and not have a clue what any of them mean. While something like "Tonight we dine in hell!" is a pretty understandable reference to almost everyone here, probably even to the ones who have not seen 300, 50 years from now it will be such an obscure quote. Or the TV shows we talk about, which would be beyond old and forgotten by then. How great would it be to be able to emerse yourself into the culture of you parents or grandparents with a forum like this. What I wouldn't give to be able to be able to read discussions between my grandfather and his online friends. I wonder what they would have talked about back then. Maybe they would have been discussing the war in Europe, and Rosevelt, whether or not he was a good President much like we talk about Bush and Iraq today. What a treat that would be. What a way to know what things were really like.

I was just pondering how much times have changed and started thinking about what I wrote above and thought I would share it.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about Clinton being in office when Independance Day came out. You have got to love how America respects their leadership. Even more interesting is we elect our Presidents and they can only serve a max a eight years, and we can get rid of them at four. We get that fed up with a guy in just that short of time. Imagine monarchies of the past and how people would be stuck a lifetime with one ruler, sans the checks and balances. I guess when you have too much you tend to get pretty spoiled.

is there any Star Trek Enterprise fans here?
Time
Yeah, it really is the PT of the ST universe. I don't consider my self a Trek fan, but I do enjoy it and have seen my fair share. I have had some fun late night discussion with my friends about all the errors and inconsistencies of Enterprise. We really had a lot of fun with that stupid borg episode, we even joke around about how they should explain the smooth headed Kilingon thing. A year later they did and it was almost as bad as the Darth Vader built threepio thing. Yeah, comparing Enterprise to the PT is very valid. Still, being a guy who doesn't consider himself a real Star Trek fan but a huge Star Wars fan, I would still rather watch episodes of Enterprise rather than watch the PT. Enterprise was far better filmed, acted and writen. Even if it did bung up continuity and have some very stupid story ideas from time to time.

Or perhaps like us SW fans and the PT, he really, really wanted to like it. He is an ST fan, and it was the newest and last ST series. Anyway the guy talks about the show being an abomination for Star Trek historians. This guy sounds like your ultimate ST nerd. Let him be what he is and stop complaining. He isn't wasting your time, you're wasting your time if you make the decision to read all the way through that even though it did not interest you. I bet Mr. Dixon doesn't feel like going out side. I think he would rather sit in his chair eating cheetos and and playing Birth of the Federation or posting on some star trek message boards someplace. Is he being any different from somebody sitting in their chair at a computer and complaining about him on a star wars message board?

BSG
Time
Sci-fi TV shows seem destined to get canceled pre-maturely anymore. It is reasonable enough for them to cancel something because the rating are low, they have to make money. But I wonder why they have had so little success lately. SG-1, X-Files, and the previous Star Treks all had an extremely long run. Firefly was just treated unfairly to begin with. Farscape, which somebody mentioned was had a fairly long run too, didn't it? SG Atlantis is already doomed. Enterprise should have lasted longer, I think it was a mixture of being treated unfairly by UPN and how bad season three was with the whole "9/11" and "war on terror" (Xindi) plot line. That got old fast. BSG, I only recently started watching it and am really enjoying it. I am still only halfway through season one right now, but with how awesome the show is so far I cannot believe it is only getting 4 seasons. I thought it had been getting pretty good rating too. At least it didn't get cut off at only fourteen episodes like Firefly.

No, they couldn't really ban a movie for something like that. Freedom of speech is still too important to us. They made a bigger deal about The Passion before it was released, but I think that actually helped boost ticket sales by having it constantly being discussed in the media. For a film to get banned in the states it would have to be really extreme. I think the more likely scenario would be the MPAA giving it a NC-17 or X rating then only getting released to cinemas that will show films with those ratings. Quite a few cinemas in America refuse to show anything above the R rating. But again, this would be for content such as extreme violence or sexual situations. Not for children using guns, all they can do is complain about things like that.

SE re-released in 2000?
Time
Yup, that is a piece a history. Perhaps the turning point? I bought this set on VCD back when George said there would be no Star Wars on DVD until all six films could be released together. I bought it online because it was an Asian import. I was pretty sure it would be the SE but it didn't say it anywhere on the box or even in the online description. The Episode II preview was a short "making of" sort of clip dealing with Owen and Beru Lars, how they cast them and tried to make them look as much like their 1977 counterparts as possible. Personally, I would rather have the Lucas interviews from the 1997 VHS release, those were a much more valuable "bonus feature".

You mean they're going to eliminate ringing cell phones, ads before the movie (I paid for the movie, not the ads), and people talking/screaming through the movie? Those are the top 3 reasons I don't go to movies anymore. It's so much easier to wait for the movie to come to video and watch it then. And yes, it's a lot cheaper too, especially considering that it doesn't just cost me $10. It costs me $20 (wife and I) and then if the movie totally blows, I'm out $20 and 2 hours. If we rent a movie that stinks, we can turn it off and we're only out $3.

I may not have a massive theater screen (50" HDTV) or an awesome sound system (we use the built-in speakers), but it beats listening to people talk through a movie or answer their cell phone any day.

Exactly! Actually I am married too, so I am in the same boat as you with paying for two ticket. I said ten bucks because that is the case of most people. But yeah, those of us taking our wives, dates, or even worse children to the movies are out at least twice as much. Imagine taking the whole family to the movies, if you have two kids you'll be out at least forty buck per movie. Renting is the way to go. You said you use the built in speakers on your TV, is the sound pretty good? I bought one of those cheap 5.1 surround sets with the sub woofer from Wal-Mart for $30, it is a cheap set but I think it sounds great. Better than my build in speakers and only ten bucks more than a trip to the movies.

Info Wanted: Is anybody capturing Star Trek Remastered ?
Time
I have only seen a few eps of the remaster Star Trek and I must say, I was expecting something completely different. I thought they would kind of special edition them and add hi-tech CG ship models and made them look more modern. Instead from what little I have seen they just made crappy looking CG versions of the original models. I must say the picture does look good though, but I really don't like those CG models. From what I had read the only reason they redid the models was to transfer the episode to HD, which the original space scenes were too low quality to put in HD. If that is the case then it is understandable that they make them just like the old models, but they seriously look awful. Really seems like they are rushing them.

So my Dad has this crazy idea... VHS set of the original trilogy in the house, somewhere...
Time
Seriously dude, just find an CD Word, CD Warehouse, and other random used game/video store, Pawn shop, whatever. You can find a full original set very cheap. Would even be worth your time to knock them off. They would cost little more than the price of the blank VHS tapes. I bet all it will take is a phone book or a short search online to find that there are such stores in your area. And it'll only take a couple of brief phone calls to confirm that they have a set of the trilogy on VHS or not.

For the record, I have a son now. I'll be showing him how to safely handle firearms at a young age (he's 4 months old, as soon as he can hold things is when I start). Children shouldn't, imo, be taught to fear firearms. They at least need to be taught to get an adult if they find one. At best they should be taught how to use and/or disarm one. Even if you don't want your kids using guns, at least teach them to get an adult if they find one. Not knowing what a gun can do and not knowing to get an adult if one is found can be disastrous.

Yeah, I'll teach my children how to you firearms too. I think it is better to understand them and know how they work than to fear them. Also if they have gun training by their dad, and have been allowed to touch and use the things under supervision, I think they are less likely to say "Whoa! A gun! Awesome." and start flashing the thing around if they ever stumble upon one by chance. That is actually a fairly common scenario in gun deaths by children. Fear and lack of understanding is a dangerous thing. This is where we are heading too. I am actually a bit afraid the government is going to get to a point where social services may have a case to look into taking you children away if it comes out that you are an irresponsible enough parent to teach your children how to use a gun.

Showing children how to safely handle firearms seems good to me. But as soon as they can hold a gun? Seems a bit soon to me.

Yes, the "left" often has an outcry about things like this. One of the reason why those of us on the "right" are getting so fed up with it. We deal with this crap every day. Not to say every leftist is a fanatic about things like that, just that every fanatic like that is a leftist. Apparently, it is better to be less historically accurate in details like that than to show something as awful and unPC as children knowing how to safely handle and use fire arms.

Hmm, I must have missed the part where the media was on his side. Would have been something to see too.

We calling those movies typically American, Republican or Democratic? I am not sure if I could divide any of those to place them on the Repubs or the Demos sides, but they all have extremely American themes straight from their names to their content. The Patriot would fit nicely in that list too.

What 30th Anniversary?
Time
I seriously cannot wait for those stamps. Me and my friends are all dressing up as Star Wars characters and we are going to camp out in line in front of the Post Office the night before. We are even going to see if we can't get ourselves a vintage Anthony Daniels leaning board so we can take naps while waiting the vast long line that is sure to circle the Post Offices of America on that day. It is going to be like Revenge of the Sith all over again, only with stamps.

A disaster? How so? The United States of America was founded on the ideals of Truth and Justice, so it is the American way. Like I said in my previous post, just because the current administration might be making some people angry (others were angry at the US before he came into office, so that's not his fault), doesn't mean that Truth and Justice aren't still the American way.

You said truth and justice is the American way so I would say truth and justice would be enough. Besides, superman is not an american, he's not even human. Adding "the American way" would not be bad in my opinion because of the current administration, it has nothing to do with that. Mixing "the American way" with a universal figure like superman will look like Americans can't look beyond there own country. There's no truth and justice in any other part of the world?

Edit: Or is "truth, justice and the American way" some sort of proverb? Something you usually say in one sentence? Is it like when you say "truth, justice" it's automatically followed by "the American way" than it's stupid to leave it out.
I'm thinking about this too much. I probably would not have noticed it if it would have been truth, justice and the American way.

"Truth, Justice, and the American way" is a line very closely related to Superman. Also Superman is an American myth. A very deep rooted part of our popular culture. He is as American as any of us, even if he is an immigrant. Maybe it seems cheesy to outsiders, but it has been this way forever. Superman is 100% American. He is an American icon.

It is true Americans have a hard time seeing beyond their boarders. Though if you understand Americans it is hard to blame them for this. Of course it is a form of ignorance and should be fought, but it is at least a somewhat understandable form of ignorance. There was actually a issue, or a series of issues of Superman comics that went the "what if Superman had crashed in the Soviet Union" route. Pretty interesting actually. Instead of standing for the American ideals of the Superman that grew up in Smallville, the Red Son stands for the ideals of Communism. A very interesting idea really.
