Star Wars - The Exhibition, London
Time
I'll be in London for a bit before September, and it would have been interesting to see. But with those prices... I'll have my wife with me too and wouldn't very well be able to leave her behind, so I would have to pay a whoppin £33. Not a chance. There must be some really dedicated fans to drop that much, for £16.50 you can buy a lot of action figures and Jar Jar tongue lollipops.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Yeah, they really messed up on Dr. Doom, and that kind of spoils it. I mean, he is the classic of classic Marvel villian. Other than Doom, it wasn't too bad (how about that bridge scene? ) I heard about the Galactus being the storm cloud... I can only hope that is false information, but somehow I have this feeling it is. I guess they decided they spent their budget on the Silver Surfer (which looks pretty good) and that they will just use some left over storm cloud effect for Galactus and call it good. Ouch! Not seeing this in theaters though. I thing Spidey was my last Marvel flick to be seen in theaters.

Yeah, I fixed it. Sorry about that daddy. Same icons, hard to tell them apart. That's why I choose this Ewok, because I have never seen anybody else use it, and I wouldn't wan't to be mistaking other people for myself.

I agree with it, and your statement wasn't less than clear before, you were perfectly clear. I understood you quite well. I was expecting plot turns actually, and I really thought he was making a decently lousy excuse for one with the Sidious/ Palpatine thing, but then he kind of threw that away. I even thought he was making a twist with the killing of the younglings thing, the first time I saw the film I could not bring myself to believe George had Anakin turn to the Dark Side so easily and I really thought the youngling part was a trip out scene and that Anakin was going to get them to help him in somehow securing the Jedi Temple, and that he would fall to the Dark Side later over Padme. But the fact is in the here and now I really don't think it is neccessary to add more baggage too it, I think the most prudent solution is to cut away the garabage and settle for less as more. For me the prequel ship has sailed, a lot of good potential got watered down into skim milk for the sake of making a quick buck, rather than becoming the rich cream it should have and could have been. But yeah, I truely would have loved to have a six movie saga that I could enjoy watching from beginning to end. Instead I have two I throughly enjoy and one I enjoy partially, which is the way Star Wars has always been for me, so I am cool with it. It is hard to imagine how great the whole thing could have been if the last four were as good as the first two. Nothing would compare.

It is stupid that George decided he couldn't do any twist because we know what happens. Actually, we havent a clue what happens, we only know a few of the end results. We knew Padme died eventual, but it could have been years later when Leia was a girl for all we knew. We knew Anakin fell to the dark side, but we didn't know how. We knew Palpatine became emporer, but we didn't know how. And we knew Luke and Leia were twins and one ended up with the Lars family (but we didn't know how they were related) and we knew Leia ended up with the Organas, but we didn't know how. Only that Obi-Wan thought it important to hide them, but we didn't know how, or at least not the specifics of it. There was a ton of potential there. And seriously, if you are going to turn Obi-Wan into a blatant liar, he could have done it in a cool and more sly way. How would it have been if Obi-Wan would have actually had something going on with Padme. It could have changed his whole character in an interesting way (not saying I would have liked this, but it would added some dimension to the film). Or what if it actually turned out that Anakin was not the father, or that Luke and Leia were not twins after all. There could have been a lot of skeletons in a lot of peoples closets. There was plenty of room for plot twists. Even if they completely changed our conception of the old trilogy, it would have been worth it. I don't care if somebody is the biggest fan of the prequels, you cannot deny the fact that with the money they had to burn, and all the potential that they had, they no where near tapped into that potential.

Superman Returns, arguably the MOST American hero, was made entirely in Sydney.

Why? To save money.

It sucks, sucks, sucks.

So? It is still an American movie. We are talking culture here, not geography. Superman is still American, and so is Spidey, regardless of where they are filmed. They are still depicted in America. They are still American movies. It is retarded to say the American flag has no business in an American movie. Why ever not?

My TPM is a Laura, actually.

Ah, mine TPM is a R 2, I have never seen a R 1, that would explain the difference. My AOTC is a R 1 though, and I am pretty sure its titled STAR_WARS_EPISODE_II or something of the sort. Are there any AOTC discs named Mary?

George Lucas calls Spiderman 3 'silly'
Time
I honestly couldn't say I would rather watch Revenge of the Sith than Spidey 3. I really couldn't. You may like the prequels man, but plenty of people see them as crappy as they are. That is why it is funny to have a one trick poney of a crap film maker going around calling movies "silly" when he himself defined exactly how silly and storyless a movie could be and get away with it. Nothing in Spidey 3 was half as painful to watch an a single scene of General Greivous...

The Willem Dafoe painting, just because I think it would make for an interesting conversation piece hanging in my place.

That's about it.

The Ugly:

We got there late so we had to sit in the front row, the very fucking front row, so the entire time I was loaded and stoned out of my mind while bending my neck so I could see this towering, distorted shitheap of a movie. My time would've been better spent staring at the floor, and it would've been easier on my spine, too.

I had to piss wicked bad for the last 40 minutes of the movie.

Yeah, I thought that same thing about the Dafoe painting. That was amazingly life like and would make a great conversation piece. I kept expecting the thing to start telling Harry to kill Spiderman, I was disappointed when they went with the mirror thing instead. Freaking mirror... anyway, a talking painting would have been pretty lame anyway, which means it would have been in sync with the rest of the movie.

Hey, that front row thing happened to me too. The theater I went to see it at is out in the middle of nowhere and rarely fills up, even during the first week. And they had the movie on seven different screens playing every 20 minutes to half an hour, so I hardly expected it to be so packed and ended up getting there a little late. When my friend and I walked in and saw the place packed we just turned around and snuck into the next room (which was almost entirely empty) and just talked for the next half hour. My question is why do they even put seats in the front row? How can you even watch the stupid thing that close to that massive screen. Ouch! I can't imagine anybody enjoying that, I am sure the only time anybody sits there is when the poor saps arrive late and get stuck. They ought to make the seats more fair, or give a huge discount for the people willing to sit in the front row or something. Nothing like paying threw the nose to see a crappy movie, then breaking your neck and burning out your eyes out in the process.

Yeah, what happened to all those sexy sounding women with smoker's voices?

I don't think dunst is attractive either. She can be, but, especially in the Spider-man moives, they seem to capture her bad side. She always comes off looking kind of sick and skeletal. I think she looked a bit better in this one, but in the second one she looked terrible. The first one, she looked okay. So yeah, they could have done a lot better in casting...

Who considers that to be "okay?"

Perhaps "okay" may not have been the best word, but come on, you have to admit while the former gets movies made about them making fun of them, and generally get laughed at and called loosers. The later is met with sympathy, and even at times with heroic admiration. While she may be met with pity by some and even contempt, who makes fun of her? And laughs at the very idea of a single 25 year old with 4 kids? Even a 20 year old virgin is often afraid to admit it out of fear of being made fun of.

Good new, we are not too into noob bashing around here. A completely retarded, self bloating practice. But as far as thoughts, comments, and contructive criticism goes, we have plenty to offer. There is a lot of experience that hangs around these forms, and regardless of how many times a film has been edited, they are always happy to help out with advice for somebody who is trying to do something new with it. Your edit sounds interesting. I for one will be looking forward to seeing how it progresses.

I grew up watching it on a pan and scan VHS and a fairly small sized TV screen, and I still loved it. I see what you are saying about how the low quality release hurts it, but the 04 DVDs don't look that bad do they? I have actually never even watched them all the way through, I never dreamed of purchasing them but I got curious one day, had a friend loan them to me and skimmed through them to all the new changes I had real about to see how bad they were. But since I only skipped to certain parts and spent no more than five minutes per film, I really didn't pay too much attention to the video quality. From what I hear kids love it with the cartoony new look.

Quality is nice, but I don't think it is all that necessary to enjoy a film. What it takes to enjoy it is appreciation of what it is, where it came from, and for who it was written. That is why I could enjoy 2001: A Space Oddysee just as well on a shiny new DVD as I could on an old VHS (if it is all I could get my hands on). That fact that my old Star Wars pan and scan VHS tapes look almost as good as the only DVD release they have gotten is pretty shameful though.

EDIT: And man are we off topic.

I would say Star Wars is really a classic rather than a pop-phenomenon. Sure it has a lot of baggage trailing behind it, and the vast majority of that baggage is crap. But honestly, who actually says Star Wars is their favorite movie? Who even watches Star Wars anymore? Everybody watches ESB, ROTJ, TPM, AOTC, and ROTS, they only watch Star Wars for good measure, but most would admit to it being slow and boring. But then there are those of us who watch Star Wars in the same way we watch Casablanca. If Star Wars was still only Star Wars, I don't think too many kids today would even care about it except for loyal sci-fi and film fans. I think Anchorhead has it right. Take away all the baggage and ignore it and you have a fantastic story. Keep all that baggage and you have a a pile of tripe you almost have to feel ashamed for even trying to like. Star Wars is a classic. I would even say that the original triology is a classic. The PT is simply a rash on the teet of the cash cow. Something that unfortunately hits every great work of fiction if it is too popular for its own good. Planet of the Apes, Star Wars, and the Lord of the Rings are three of my favorite stories in their original forms (film, film, and book respectively) that have way too much baggage attached to them that drag their quality through the mud. All three could be considered pop-phenomenea, but are also all undoubtably classics. In the end, the originals are still available and the baggage can be ignored. I think it is less rather than more that makes/will make these tales classics.

I guess you have to be an America to appreciate the flag thing. It is lamely patriotic, but I think that is the point. When I saw the movie with my friend we both laughted at that scene. It is just a very random quick shot of the flag. In reality it is extremely out of place, but again, I think that was the point. I loved it actually. Before you say the American flag has no place in a Spider-man movie, don't forget the movie takes place in New York, not Sidney. Spidey is an American and was created by Americans. While our films and entertainment are exported, they are first and foremost made for and by Americans. Patriotism taken to the extremity like that is humerous. Americans have no problem laughing when Bond pull the string on his parachute and out pops the British flag. It is terribly lame, but you just can't help smiling at it.

The other one was his brother.

I must have missed the Sam Raimi cameo somehow. Ted Raimi has been in all of them, he actually had an extremely small role in this one. The cameo that really bothered me was the Stan Lee cameo. His cameos in every Marvel movie was kind of cool at first when it was kind of a "Where's Waldo" thing, but it has got increasingly more blatant, this time they even gave him lines. It was a really long scene too, and so out of place. Next thing you know he is going to be narrarating the dang things...

Maybe even a behind-the-scenes thing like Building Empire. I've got the leaked trailer, loads of on-set pictures, press kit photos, interviews, Comicon roundtables, the whole shebang.

A Building Empire sort of thing would be awesome crazyrabbits!
