Sometimes I feel like I am one of the last people on earth who still doesn't have a cell phone. Viva la resistance!

I even managed to hold out from buying a TV until this last August. My family had a TV when I was growing up, but when I moved off to college and was too poor to buy one, I found it was kind of nice not having the bloody thing blaring at me all the time. I made it seven years without a TV, only to have my friend give me his old PS2 which motivated me to go out and get one.

My wife and I are actually considering selling the horse and carriage and buying a car sometime soon, j/k

I like how you mentioned limos should still be allowed, because it is important for rich people not to have their lifestyles effected, even if they insist on using one large massive vehicle just to lug one person around in. Personally, I am waiting for the car to become ilegal. They are responsible for far too many deaths, and they are the cause of our oil problem. If only professonals drove, such as highly trained bus drivers or drivers of emercency units such as fire trucks and ambulances, then imagine how few accidents there would be. This would also work a good deal to making U.S. larger, it has grown too small. It is too easy to drive from one end to the next in too short a period of time. I also thing cell phones should be banned. Phone calls from state to state should be more expensive, and the internet ought to be carefully regulated. No one person should be allowed more than 2 hours a day online. This could be accomplished through everyone having their own governement issued username and password they must use when logging onto the internet, which automatically let's authorities know exactly when you go online and when you go back off. If you spend more than a certian number of hours a day you will be arrested and taken to a rehabilitation center where they will brain wash you so you will never want to use the internet again. I think all these things would be steps in the right direction for a perfect world. Think how much fuel the U.S. we would be saving then!

It feels very Alien-esque (as in the film, Alien), finding an empty shell, then stumbling across a Metroid a few screens later. Man, I love that game. The all black background on the monochrome Game Boy really gave it a great eerie feeling.

vote_for_palpatine, do you really like getting into these kinds of pointless debates? Because I don't. It is a waste of time and I don't have that much time to waste. They especially get pointless when they become biting and everyone starts talking down to each other. Since you already bothered to put me down in a few areas and make me sound stupid, I'll give a few quick defenses and clairifications,

Reading is fundamental, my son. You said all he did was whine and rebel" I never used the word "all", what I said was, "Instead of the hero Anakin Skywalker was suppose to be, we only see him as a..."

Maybe "only" was true strong of a word, but I still stand by what I said. We should have seen him as a hero, not a rebellious teen. Also what's with the "my son" what makes you so convinced you are so much older than me?

"That's not what I'm saying at all. I don't know where you're getting this from. Correct me if I'm wrong, but to me it seems that you think that Anakin is a flat character in AOTC. He's not."

Okay, I didn't realize your attack was against my use of the world "only" I thought you were saying it was not true that he was a rebellious teen, with the fact that he saved Obi-Wan as proof that he wasn't.

"Those were sentence fragments used deliberately to make a point. I know how to write, thanks. And BTW, you meant to say " your English", not " you English"."

Hmm, don't see how talking like Yoda makes any points, but alright. Yeah, I have a tendacy to leave the "r"s off of my "your"s when I am typing in a hurry and not proof reading. Very clever on turning that around to prove I can't write and you can. I can see you are very experienced in arguing over the internet.

"That's good and fair. However, if AOTC and especially ROTS had been better movies, I don't think people would object to the CG as much."

Of course! No doubt about it. It could have been a full out CG film without a spec of live footage to be found anywhere, and I would have had nothing but praise for it had it been a good movie.

"Zing!"

Yeah, I figured you would answer with something like that.

"Your previous post was vaguely worded to the point where I had to guess at your meaning. You explained yourself much better this time."

I never even mentioned the artistry of it, odd you would assume that. You told me it was incorrect to compare it to the OT battles because of they were not as artistic. Not even sure how something like that has the ability to be incorrect. I said, "it by far has the greatest OTish moments of the whole PT in it. That saber battle at the end set the standard for saber battles so high, and unfortunately neither of the other two even tried." Not sure how that is vague, I simply meant that it set the standard for saber battles pretty high and the other two didn't even come close. I consider it an OTish moment because it was a moment in the film where I felt like I was watching a new Star Wars movie.

"It deserves that flak because it is a bad, bad, terrible movie" = plenty of answers? Forgive me if I'm still not convinced."

I never said that that one sentence was the plenty of good answers. I wrote more than just that.

"This is your second jab at my circular reasoning post. I'm wondering if you even know what that means."

Yes, I made it this far in life without knowing what circular reasoning was, you caught me. You are by far my intellectual superior.

"This answers an argument I didn't make."

I didn't intend to answer an arguement made by you with that last section of my last post. It was in response to your feeling that AOTC gets too much undeserved flak. I was just offering that I didn't feel they got undeserved flak, but rather quite the opposite.

Man, if the criteria for a movie being decent were that it fullfills it objectives that it set out to make, then we would have a lot less crappy movies. I am sure the makers of Mano the Hands of Fate felt that their film went out to achieve they wanted it to from a story telling standpoint. Anakin's clashing with Obi-Wan could have been done a million other ways, but the way that it was done is a joke and painful to watch. Hence, it deserve flak.

Not true. The opening dialogue between he and Obi-Wan establishes that Anakin has saved Obi-Wan at least once before. Later, Anakin foils the second assassination attempt, rescues Obi-Wan in the skies or Coruscant, then dives out of his speeder onto the assassin's.

So just because he saves Obi-Wan's life, doesn't mean he wasn't rebellious, whiney teenager. I have known teens who have claimed to hate their parents and wish they were dead, only for their parents to end up actually dying some accident, and guess what? The kid usually has a pretty hard time coping with this. So you are saying that if Anakin were truely a rebellious teenager, he would simply not have bothered to save Obi-Wan's life?

This sounds suspiciously like circular reasoning.

Okay... good comeback... uh... never mind.

Well, to pose a question you posed earlier, So what? Sets and puppets do not a movie make - just as CGI does not a movie make.

Okay, you English is really falling apart on his in the last sentence, just thought I'd mention it. No, that does not make a movie, never said it did. But it undeniably sets the feel of a movie. I feel like I could visit Theed. I feel like I could walk through the jungles of Naboo, just like it has always felt that I could walk though the forests of Endor, or the snows of Hoth. There are really no locations in either of the other two films that feel tangible. Oddball and the clone pilots were so painfully CG, as were many of the other CG characters. This is why I said that TPM felt more real and organic than the others. Never said it was a good movie because it used puppets and real locations. I simply said those contributed to it feeling more real than the others. If you ask me what Kashyyk looks like, I would say blurry and green. Because that is all I ever got out. Feels like a scene out of a 100% CG film, not even any of the characters are real in those scenes. If it had been real, the whole wookie battle probably would have been pretty cool. Imagine the ewok battle, but with wookies.

Well, as far as sheer artistry goes, there is no surpassing the Darth Maul vs. Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan battle. That was a beautifully coreographed scene. However, it is incorrect to connect this saber battle to any in the OT. The saber battles in the OT weren't nearly that artistic, especially the very first one.

Oh, sorry, I didn't realize it was incorrect to connect it to the OT. I should have asked you first if it was correct or not.

What I meant by that had nothign to do with sheer artistry, what I mean by that was that it was the only lightsaber battle in the PT, that was fun to watch like the OT. It was the only lightsaber battle in the PT, that had you on the edge of your seat, like the lightsaber battles of the OT. But this too is probably incorrect, or circular, or spherical or something.

Anyway, you asked why does it deserve so much flak, I gave you plenty of answers by now. I thought you seriously wanted to have someone point out to you why it gets so much flak, not to get into an endless debate on why it is treated unfairly, and who is and isn't giving suspiciously circular reasoning. In all honesty I don't think you can say the PT is treated unfairly by any means at all, it is a series of crappy movies that are successful simply because they bear the same name as a series of really good movies that were made a long time ago. They really didn't deserve the success they got. If it hadn't been for the name Star Wars, it is not likely it would have done too well. You can say they may have done well on their own, and they may have, but you simply can't ignore the 20 years worth of Star Wars fans who rushed to theaters with their kids to see each one of these that would not have done so had it been something completely different.

"A lot of AOTC was significantly flawed, but we did get to see Anakin struggling with his mentor, with his attraction to Padme, and with his Dark Side temptations"

But what does any of that matter? Who cares if Anakin struggled with his mentor, was that really ever suppose to be the point? Instead of the hero Anakin Skywalker was suppose to be, we only see him as a rebellious teenager. He isn't doing anything but clashing with his mentor. I don't see any of those things you listed as a defense for AOTC against all the flak it gets. It deserves that flak because it is a bad, bad, terrible movie. I wouldn't call TPM a failure in most respects though. None of the PT were failures, they all did great in Box Office and DVD sales, thanks to their name. TPM is the only one of the trilogy that strikes me as real. It is the only one with an organic feel to it. It still used pupets and it still used locations. All the others just feel like extended toy commercials. Phantom had some very childish elements, but if you go beyond that then it by far has the greatest OTish moments of the whole PT in it. That saber battle at the end set the standard for saber battles so high, and unfortunately neither of the other two even tried. The first time I saw Ep. II I was expecting a nifty little saber battle at the end, instead I get a CG Yoda going beserk. Episode III, again doesn't even try to out due any of the sagas saber fights. Even the Anakin Obi-Wan fight is pretty boring and disjointed thanks to the lame Yoda Palps battle.

I haven't really used P2P since the Napster days, but I have ripped music or movies from my friends only to find I really enjoy them and buy legal copies. My CD collection would not be anywhere near the size it is if it hadn't been for copying mp3s from my friends. I think the mp3 definitely exposes us to a lot more music than we would in any other way. My friend burns me a disc of mp3s from his music collection, and I am suddenly exposed to a vast library of music, much of which I have never heard before or would have ever heard via radio, and suddenly I discover several new bands I like and would consider buying an album of.

Here at OT.com we have a community of people who share similar tastes. From time to time we talk about music. Let's say someone here recommends to me a band they think I might like, with P2P I could simply go and dl it and decide I like it enough to spend my money on it. Same situation without P2P very likely I will never get to a chance to listen to that band. 20 second sample sound clips just don't cut it, I am not going to decide to buy or not based off of a twenty second, low quality clip. People want to try things before they buy them.

It isn't as much of a carefully guarded secret as you might think. I have never seen the film myself, but I new Lucas produced it.

As far as Star Wars overloaded with merchandise, that is an understatment. The market is flooded with Star Wars crap. I think things are easier to enjoy when you are not bombarded by them everytime you leave the house. I like the fact that Indiana Jones is popular, has a fantastic DVD release, and some neat niche merchandise that rather than flooding the toy section of Wal-Mart, remain confined to comic shops and SunCoast stores. With the release of the new film I am affraid marketing is going to go nuts, maybe not as bad as SW, but just the fact that there is a Lego Indy on the way... oh well.

Yeah, true for me too, though I have probably seen AOTC and ROTS no more than three times each (which makes it interesting that I saw TPM seven times in the theater, just the excitement of the music and the opening crawl on the big screen and that lightsaber battle at the end made it worth it). I remember hating ROTS even more the second time I saw it, and it being unbearable the next time. First two times were in the cinema, third time was on DVD. I never saw AOTC in the theater, so I had only ever seen it on DVD, and I remember the first time being interested in what happens next, but greatly disappointed. And viewings of it after the first time were pretty painful, and one of those times was the riff track version, and it was still hard to watch. If I had to sum AOTC up in two words, they would be: "fingernails" and "chalkboard". If I ever had to watch it again in one setting, I might actually consider removing my eyes and squeezing them into my ears.

The Dark Knight (Batman Begins Returns Again)
Time
Hmm, I don't keep up on Hollywood so much, I mean I watch films and enjoy them, but I decided long ago actors are for the most part a bunch of inflated idiots and I really don't care what goes on in their lives. I am usually more interested in writers and directors than actors. So, with the whole Katie Holmes thing, I really don't know much about her, and really have no bias against her. And I have always been kind of surprised at how much venom is tossed at her. I am still not sure why. Just because she is dating Tom Cruise? I think Tom Cruise is an idiot, but that doesn't stop me from watching movies that have him in them. Another reason people say they don't like her is because she played in so many bad movies? Doesn't seem like a fair reason. Natalie Portman has played in her fair share of dogs (I can name three in a row without even taking a breath or blinking an eye), but yet people still have a lot of respect for her. But Katie Holmes seems to be a name that makes people shudder. I didn't think she did that bad of a job in Batman Begins. Perhaps I am missing something. People making efforts to edit her out of the movie because they dislike her so much? I really must be missing something.

With that said, I agree with Gaffer, I don't think the damsel in distress is as required as we have made her. It is a classic storying telling device, and definately not a bad one. I would say timeless. But as Tolkien showed us so well, it is not required for a great story. The hero simply needs a motive, a magic ring full of evil power was enough to get Frodo to travel to the ends of Middle-Earth through countless hardships without any promiss of winning the king's daughter's hand in marriage or winning the heart of his love interest and living happily every after. Of course Tolkien has been criticised for that, and the creative minds behind the recent film adaptions of the book found it fit to magnify Aragon's love story because of it.

But in Batman Begins, it was almost more of a childhood friendship thing than a true Romantic interest. If I remember correctly it seemed like she once had feelings for him but had kind of half way given up on him, and that he has always been too busy thinking of vengence for his parents to even consider her. But the relationship that was really focused on in the film was that of childhood friends. While he was off seeking revenge, she was still remaining true to the values of his family, and ultimately she is a major influence in opening his eyes to the greater good. I guess the movie could work without her, but why? I think the character carries more substance than the fast majority of hero love interests. She may fit the role of damsel in distress at moments in the film, but we don't have Batman fighting to win her heart. Certianly isn't a Mary Jane or Lois Lane sort of relationship. Maybe that will change in the second film, I really hope it doesn't though. I have always liked Batman being the kind of guy who is too concerned with doing his job to think about sex or relationships. Kind of adds to his sickness and obession to do good.

Very interesting thoughts. Lucas messed up bad with the PT, I wish he would have stuck to The Phantom Menace style, but with some added maturity. Perhaps by the time he realized the Phantom Menace wasn't what he wanted it to be he felt like he was already commited to doing the next two and kind of gave up on them and just followed through with them without the care he put into TPM. Anytime you try to please everyone you end up in some trouble, that is kind of what he was trying to do I think.

If George does feel like he kind of ruined things with the PT, I wish he would just give up on Star Wars and go makes some films. I would like to see him redeem himself as a serious director, perhaps become a real life version of his Darth Vader, pull off the mask that is the SW franchise and come back to the lightside of the director's chair. Proving to us once again, like he did back in 83, that it is never really too late to turn back from any chosen path.

Regardless of criticism, he should have put out the movies he wanted to put out. I think that is the true mark of any good story teller, to tell the story THEY want to read or watch. It is obvious this was the case with Star Wars (1977), Lucas make a film with elements from all the television serials and movie he watched while growing up. He wanted to make his own vision of the kind of fantasy stories he liked.

There is an essay by C.S. Lewis titled "On Three Ways of Writing for Children" in which he explains that when he writes children stories he does not write down to his intended audience or try to find out what kind of books are popular, rather he writes a story he would like to read. I think that is why so many adults love Lewis' Narnia books and his Ransom Trilogy. In both cases Lewis wrote the kind of story that he himself would be interested in reading, rather than trying to come up with something children might like. In fact, let's look at J. K. Rowling, a relatively new author who poped up out of nowhere to have her name know all over the world. I think it is quite obvious that with the Harry Potter books she is writing the kind of story that interests her very much and was very close to her, not nessicarily the kind of book she thinks would be popular or that she felt would sell a lot of copies. I really felt that all throughout the PT that Lucas was trying to change things to make people like them more. What? You don't like Jar Jar? Fine I'll give you less Jar Jar. What? You didn't think there was a good enough villian in the second film to live up to the standard of Vader and Maul? Alright, I will make a really great half man half robot who uses light sabers! What? Not enough violence? Not mature enough? Okay, I will make it more mature. How does decapitation, lots of amputations, the slaughtering of children, and someone being burned alive sound?

This is why we have such a disjointed trilogy, one film you have filled with cartoony characters and fart jokes, then by the last film you have the murder of kids and Anakin being burned alive on screen.

Hmm, I fall somewhere inbetween on this topic. On one hand I agree with ferris, we need to find ways to prevent this in the future. But then again, the media over analyses the hell out of this crap, even when the reasons are obvious they are still there, saying crap like "So he played Doom right? He owned GTA didn't he? His parents were over bearing religious fanatic right? Just shut the hell up already. My goodness, right after Virginia Tech. the only thing they did was analyse and speculate. Do we really learn all that much from seeing the guys face on every news network for the following week? I mean, in Cho's case it was pretty simple, don't sell freakin fire arms to someone who is mentally unstable, or as most people in the media would say, don't sell firearms period. On the other hand I agree with Rob though, one thing these guys want is attention. Someone sees what attention Cho gets, and they decide they want a bit of that, so they do the same, then someone sees that it worked for all the other guys, so he does the same. If the media didn't flash the guys face every ten seconds, and no more attention is paid to them, then they might be less likely to carry through seeing the payment not being worth it. But then again, how can you really let something like this go? How could you really do justice to those who were victims by barely making a mention of such an event. And above all, how could you possibly expect the media not to jump all over something like this like flies on a fresh turd.

Cinematic Titanic- New MST3K Company To Riff Star Wars Holiday Special?
Time
Wow, If we start putting all the clues together,

" Our first release is at this time a total secret, however – I’m willing to say it makes “Manos the Hands of Fate” look like “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” in a car wreck with “Eegah!” with notes of peach."

"Also, in the news: I’ve just been interviewed by Lucasfilm online, in anticipation of Cinematic Titanic’s first live show and world premiere in San Francisco in December. We will link to that story as soon as it is released. Sorry, but this special live show is a closed event for I.L.M/Lucasfilm employees and guests only. As of this writing we are still negotiating some of the fine points, however I am pleased to mention that they’ve granted us the rights to offer this event to you, the friends of Cinematic Titanic, remotely and slightly after the fact - stay tuned."

"The name of the film we'll be riffing on is a secret, but I'll try to tempt you with some vague descriptions: it's very rare, it's very strange, and it's of questionable quality."

It is of the standards to be complared with "Manos the Hands of Fate", "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" and "Eegah", those are some very low standards. So whatever this film is it has to be a real dog, worse than a dog actually, it has to be a dead rotting carcass of a dog. Then Lucasfilm is involved and the event if for Lucasfilm/I.L.M. employees and their guests. They had to have negotiations with Lucasfilm inorder to get permission to release a recording of the event to us. The film very rare, very strage, and of questionable quality.

Man, that really seems to point to the HS, and the only evidence we have against it is a brand new poster who signed up just to say it is not the case because a secondary source told him (not trying to put you down man, but you know how it goes, there is really nothing to verify anything). So as far as official info, I'd say we are still at the Howard the Duck or HS place. Though Howard the Duck just sucks, it is not really Manos quality. Or really that strange in comparison to man kids films. And while it has never seen an official DVD release, it has been availible on for a long time. So yeah, my best guess now is the HS. Either that or something we have never heard of.

Uh, so yeah, I just can't help myself but to quote chainsawash and say "quick question: Why the fuck are you here?" with us "Star Wars elitest dipshite"s on our Star Wars elitest dipshit site?

The site was started to get the OOT on DVD and yet people were asking him why he's here. What does the title of ROTLA have to do with wanting the OOT on DVD? Nothing. It has nothing to do with it.

Uh, your anti-ADM biases are showing. Go back and reread the part about the "Star Wars elitest dipshits" and the Star Wars fanboys who complain far "too fucking much" then come back and explain why it is odd that he was asked why he was here.

So he thought you were being a lame ass fanboi for bitching about the way the documentary portrayed the title. I thought you were too and couldn't figure out why you kept saying you didn't remember such a movie.

Yes, a lame ass Star Wars fanboi (poor English language, I shed tears for thee) dipshite for making a comment on an INDIANA JONES movie. And logic takes a violent blow to the groin. Also, I failed to find the part where ADM "kept saying" he didn't remember such a movie, I counted one time, but then again I suck at math.

The point is that not wanting things changed at all seems to have been taken to an extreme. So much so that when some show uses a modified title, instead of your precious original title, that you guys make fun of it. The rest of the world could care less and probably recognizes it either way.

Right, but even funnier than people complaining about something are people who complain about people complaining about something. If it is even fair to call what we were doing with Raiders as complaining. Sometimes it is fun to jest about silly little things like this, especially when it is about a film maker who complained (or bitched in a fanboy like manner) about people making "minor" alterations to films, such as the colorization of black and whites films, who then goes on to make major and minor alterations to each and every one of his films. Sorry if some of us find things like this amusing to "complain" about.

The interesting thing about this complaint against complaining as you guys are making a real "I am annoyed" sort of complaint, while the "name has changed" complainers really aren't that sore about the situation. You have complaining like as in from a guy who is always pissed off type complaining, then you have the "what's up with that" Jerry Seinfeld just for kicks sort of complaining. I believe if you look at the posts more carefully, we anti- Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark title people fit much better in the later than the former. So I would say you guys are the ones who need to get over it and stop complaining, meanwhile we will continue to have fun pointing silly things like the documentary out to one another and complain about them.

Yeah, exactly. With the right twist you could look at the Rebel Alliance as Terrorists. Throughout the trilogy we mostly just see them defending themselves and running away, the battle at the end of ROTJ being the only true offensive attack by them against the Empire we see in the films. But they must have done something to have the empire after them, I highly doubt they had just been protesting peacefully with signs parades when the Empire decided that the rebel's secret base on Yavin 4 ought to be one of the first targets of their new planet exploder.

So perhaps it is safe to say Star Wars is a film that justifies terrorism and tries to convince us that our government is turning into an Empire.

Usually if it were a bad battery saving would not work at all, I think. On the back of all/most cartridges with battery saves there was a warning to hold down the reset button when turning off the Nintendo. Somehow when you would press the power button to turn off the system there was a possibility of blowing out the memory on the cartridge. I had heard of a lot of people who had experiences that problem, but I never bothered with holding down the reset button and I never had it happen to me even once. Maybe some cartridges were more likely to experience it than others. That could have been what was happening with you and your brother with Baseball Stars.

Kind of stupid Metroid, Contra, Metal Gear, Jackal and the later Mega Man games had passwords, while sports games got to have battery saves. But I guess password saves wouldn't really work too well with sports games. The Japanese Famicom version of Metroid had save states though.
