Ian McDiarmid's performance in the PT (also the OT) is memorable and absolutely enthralling
Time
"People tend to gain weight as they age, which adds to the chubbiness of the face too"

That isn't really true. Some people may gain weight as they age, but plenty of people loose weight as they age too. I know a lot more boney old people than I know chubby old people. This still has absolutely nothing to do with the different masks. And while it may be the case with Travolta, it is obviously NOT the case with McDiarmid. The evidence is in the fact that we have pictures of him from 82, and we have pictures of him now. He doesn't have a very chubby face by any stretch of the imagination. And it isn't the wideness or the chubbiness of the mask in ROTS that is different. If that was the only difference then it wouldn't even be worth mentioning.

The Return of Futurama
Time
Watched it last night, I thought it was pretty good. I don't know how it is going to work when split into six episodes though, I think it'll end up being kind of boring having such a large portion of the "season" spent on the same plot. As Zombie pointed out, it wasn't as good as it could have been. But hopefully they will pick up speed and improve. As the brilliant introduction to the movie reminded us, they have been out of it for a few years thanks to the former powers of the Box Network. I think it deserves a chance to find itself again. At any rate, I am just happy Futurama is back.

Indiana Jones IV

"Look at Marcus Brody! He was great!"

Yeah, Marcus was great, but he was a secondary character and not the star. Though I must say, if they were to make a spin off starring Marcus Brody as the title character, I would be in-line there opening night! I would be so much more excited about that than I am about Crystal Skull. I remember when I first heard the name "The Phantom Menace" I wasn't quite sure what to think, but I decided "Hey, its a Star Wars movie, it'll be great" eight years later we all know how that went down. Now we hear the name "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" and we all say, "Hey, its Indy, it'll be great!" Sorry for being pesimistic. Those screen shots (especially Shia with the little stash) just left a bad taste in my mouth. I have really been trying to be positive. Just seems like it is a very rare occasion that we are not disappointed by movies these days, gets really hard to let your hopes up about anything.

Both of those statements are so true!!! And that is my point. Perhaps he doesn't look bad considering his age, but he is damn old for the role. And of course we can't expect him to be young forever, that is why we make sequels while our stars are still young, rather than pointlessly waiting a million years, then finally decided to get around to it. I could understand if the demand for it just wasn't there, but I remember people being thrilled about the idea of an Indy IV way, way back just a short time after Last Crusade came out. This movie would have been a money maker back then too, and it would have had a better chance of being good. Now it just feels like another crappy bookend to finish the Indy franchise off. Now the movies we like will be surrounded by a pretty crappy TV series, and possible a very crappy attempt to get a few more drops out of a fairly old cow. Even if the milk is still good, there is no denying that it would have tasted a lot better ten years ago.

I assure you if that hood was flipped down in ROTJ and in several different lighting conditions people would be saying the same thing about the ROTJ make-up.

You are forgetting that we see him with the hood on in ROTS and he looks VERY different. You are also forgetting that we see him in the 2004 version of ESB and he looks very different. You are also not taking into account how very different the coloring and everything else about the two different masks. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with hoods or lighting. Not even in the slightest. That would be like saying the reason the Yoda puppet in TPM looks different from the one in ESB and ROTJ is not because of sculpting, but because we have only ever seen him in the dim fire light of his hut and in TPM we are seeing him for the first time under real lights. Utter nonsense.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut in the UK!
Time
"Roy Batty says to Tyrell "I want more life FATHER" instead of "fucker", which is a very interesting change"

That is interesting. Even more interesting is that on the subtitle track for the crappy Director's Cut DVD that has been out forever, it also says "father" while Roy very clearly says "fucker" on the actual audio. I remember watching it with subtitles once and discovering this, I even rewound that bit and watched it again to make sure Roy wasn't really saying "father" when for all these years I thought he said fucker. I am sure there is a story behind this variation. If it was just for a TV cut, I am curious how it ended up on the subtitle track for the DVD, and why they changed it for the Final Cut.

Now after reading Zombie's post I am even more saddened by the fact that I don't have a chance to see it in the theater. I wish it was a wide release. It is a lot better than half the crap playing in the theaters at this very moment.

The Return of Futurama
Time
"I really hope this is a way to get futurama into full time production again"

That is already happening. There are suppose to be a few more straight to DVD releases, then they are going to divide up them all up into episodes, add extra bits to each one, and air them as season 5. I know this is a very blantant case of double dipping, but I am willing to look the other way if it gets us another decent sized run of Futurama. I think the future of Futurama is actually looking very bright. Adult oriented cartoons are arguably more popular than they were in Futurama's day, and since they will no longer be aired on the FOX network, which has a history of killing some pretty good shows, but on Comedy Central who has managed to keep South Park alive for like 80 seasons (small exageration), I feel Futurama is in pretty good hands and is destined to make a lot of people a lot of money, and as long as it is bringing in money it should be safe from a second cancellation.

Fall to the Dark Side?
Time
Even Superman's lame turn to the darkside in Superman 3 (it was part 3, right?) was more convincing than Anakin's.

I have never seen Smallville either, so likewise, I cannot comment, but just how you said things like "early season" and "seeds of his future" it sounds like this was a gradual turn, which I believe is the way any turn has to be to be convincing, unless it is something like brainwashing or mind control. Anakin had three movies to turn to the darkside during, and he only does it during the last few minutes of the final film.

Luke's "turn" in ROTJ was great because it was emotional, with him giving into his anger then realizing his mistake, rather than a retarded confused "should I do it? No I shouldn't! Or should I? Errr, what have I done?! NOooooooo!... huh? Okay, I'll be your loyal slave from here on out. Oh, what's that? Go kill a bunch of kids? Alright I am on it. I'll be back in time for dinner master, remember, I like the red table cloth with the little black zigzag design. And don't forget the candles!

Padme had to die anyway, I have no idea why that wasn't used as a device to get him to turn.

I can't think of any other examples of reasonable turns off the top of my head.

Whoa! Where's the cane? Can Indy walk okay without it? I am starting to feel more and more convinced this whole thing was a really bad idea! This thing should have been made at least ten years ago, there was really no reason for it not to have been made then, and really no reason why it should be made now.

Yeah, I know that is what he does in the original epic, but usual film adaption have a fair case for taking liberties and adding some pants or a loin cloth or something, or at the very least shooting above the waist. Man! I can see the whole "AustinPowerism" thing getting annoying! Especially during a fight sequence.

I love that disgustingly sexist, needlessly depressing drivel. I am rather fond of Hemingway, and I am nuts about Emily Dickenson. And I find myself a very happy undepressed sort of person. The praise for Hemingway's writing wasn't so much the stories that he told, but the way that he told them. I was his way with words and how much he managed to fit into so little words. But I agree he is not for everyone, and it is unfortunate that English classes tend to tout him and the end all be all of writers. I have the belief that English classes creat as many haters of literature as they create fans of it. I feel it should be the duty of a literature class to expose the students to as many different writers and styles of wrting as possible, and give them a taste for what they may and may not like. When a class focuses on just the writers that the teacher gets off on and breezes past the ones they don't like as much (as is often the case), then it really isn't benefiting anyone very much. There is something out there for everyone, but it seems when the student decides his tastes are definately not the same as those of his instructor, it is easy for him to assume that all classic works of literature are also not within his tastes. I have seen that happen many times, and it is very sad.

Perhaps without the cool visuals, one really notices what little substance this movie actually has.

You think that's surprising? Ernest Hemingway only had confusingly-written sex scenes to cover up his novels' general lack of redeeming value, but people praised him all the same.

Whoa, we ought to change the name of this thread to the literature bashing thread. I have read quite a good deal of Hemingway, I don't remember too many confusingly-written sex scenes, and I certianly don't remember any that were the highlight of the book used to cover up his novels' lack of substance.

Posters
Time
Not a Neon Genesis fan, never even seen it actually, all I know about it is that is an anime. That said, based on the general esthetics of each poster I would say either the first one or the last one. If it were myself, I would probably take the top one, the name of the series or movie or whatever it is at the top of the poster adds something. It is more like a movie poster. I prefer movie posters because in being a movie posters they symbolize and represent the film in its entirety, rather than a still frame or a particular character. For example, let's use Arnie's posters, he has the one of Dath Vader, which would lead someone who sees it to believe that he likes Darth Vader, which is probably true. Next is his Star Wars Trilogy poster with Luke and Vader clashing sabers, this one would indicate to someone that he likes the SW trilogy, which is true. Even though it has both Luke and Vader on it, it doesn't symbolize just a fondness for those two characters, but a fondness for the entire trilogy.

I am not quite sure why I am spouting a long winded explaination of my philosophy on posters, but during the course of writing all this, I have definitely decided I think you should get the third one, Sean. It has more character to it. And seems to fit better with the style of your John Lennon and skull posters.

I also felt that Serenity didn't do the series justice. I watched all the episodes and the movie in order, back to back over the course of a few days, and my expectation for the movie had been build up pretty high between the course of watching the pilot to Objects in Space. But I can see why the people who watched the series because they watched and liked the movie would have a deep fondness for the film.

A New Thought on George
Time
Yeah, it actually isn't such a new thought. This is quite obviously been the case throughout the PT. It even comes out in George's interaction with artists and prop disigners on the ROTS documentary included on the DVD. At one point he says something along the lines of, "That is a really good idea! But just not for my movie" right after George goes into a big spiel about how he encourages creative advice from his team. The whole disaster that was the PT shows very clearly there was no one around to give constructive criticism and say, "Hey, this is awful! You can't be serious about this!"

No arguments there.

"I was actually talking about george lucas with the hurricane comment."

I agree the guy is a bit out of touch. If you read many of my posts around here you will see I am one of the first to admit it and complain about it. I still think George's whole problem is a matter of ego. I used to love that mad tv sketch that was made sometime after TPM where a reporter goes to interview Lucas at the Ranch and he is like a spoiled little child the whole time. At the end of the sketch he is dressed up in an Ewok costume and he and the reporter are playing a game of some sort together, and he keeps changing the rules. The reporter finally gets pissed off and just leaves. I think for a long time, starting even before I ever saw that sketch, I almost pictured George that way in my mind, as a grown up spoiled little child. Of course he isn't like that though, and lately I have been trying to see him in a more honest and realistic light, rather than assuming he is really the kind of lunatic who drives around his own ranch in a golf car dressed in an Ewok suit swinging around a plastic lightsaber. He is a real man, with a real family and a real life. He is not an idiot, he is a very cleaver guy. He obviously has an inflated opinion of himself and an exaggerated sense of his own greatness and ability to do no wrong, which we can all plainly see working against him throughout his directing/writing career. I really thing it is this that kept him from releasing the OOT, and it is his hurt ego at the realization that he made a mistake and has been called out on it by a large portion of his fanbase that is keeping him from it now. One way or another, now is not the best time to throw the money into making a new release after having just had a new one last year. Not to mention the current bluray vs. HD-DVD. The special feature of last years release was a foot in the door for the OOT, now that the door is open I don't see a reasonable quality release of the OOT sometime in the future being that much of an impossibility.
