Generalizing in such a way is retarded. No, I did not know that. I know that SOME atheists are decently moral people, and I know SOME Christians are decently moral people, and just so I do not have to make a huge comprehensive list, I know that SOME people of various other religions are decently moral people.

Getting into a pissing contest of who is more moral is pointless (not accusing you of doing this, Sean). However, if you are an atheist, and a moral person, don't feel the need to defend all atheists. I am a Christian, and I try to be a moral person, but I know there are plenty of Christians who are not moral, or somehow feel justified in doing wrong. I cannot defend them, nor do I want to defend them. There have been mass murders murdering under the name of Christ, and there have been mass murders murdering under the name of Darwanism or survival of the fitest. If you ask me, both of our religions suffer from bad people, doing bad things under its name.

That would be great actually. I even thought about doing that, nothing fancy, just a basic DVD with a static menu, but this thing doesn't fall under preservation or anything like that. I think everyone who wants to own this ought to be paying the RiffTrax guys the 4 bucks for this. They own the copyright to their riff.

There will be no C&D because there is absolutely no grounds for one whatsoever. There is nothing George, Fox, or anyone else could possibly do about this. If you don't understand how RiffTrax work, here is you go,

Former cast members of MST3K sit down and watch a movie together, throughout the entire film they crack jokes and make fun of the movie, meanwhile a recording device captures their banter. Then the recording of their banter, known as a riff is sold in mp3 format as an instant download from their website. They tell you which version of the DVD to rent/buy/own on their website, and you can play it the mp3 along with the movie, or rip the movie to your computer and sync them together and burn them onto your very own special edition of that DVD. Either way, they are not touching the copyrighted material. The only thing they offer is the recording of their own creation, which they hold the copyright to. And if you read their announcment for the SW HS, they were very smooth in the way in which they told us what version would be the one they are riffing. And they said since it is not commercially availibe, they were counting on all of us having recorded it off of TV back when it originally aired (obviously a joke), but the point is, they never told us where to get a copy from. It would be no different than me recording a commentary track to the HS and selling it or offering it for free to you guys and letting you know what version of the HS I had watched to record it.

Wow, at reading the content of that issue of Insider, I could feel a tiny spark of excitment welling up with in me, especially at things like "Peek at Prequel Yoda" and "Episode One casting announced" then reality clicked in and my brain told whatever part of my body it is that created the tiny spark of excitment, "Hey you idiot! We have already seen Episode One and the other two prequels and they sucked and prequel Yoda was one of the worst parts about them" and thus the spark was snuffed. My brain can be a real jerk sometimes.

I am not that negative about everything. If fact, if you met me in real life you would find me to be a very optimistic and positive sort of guy. I just like to have realistic expectations of things, the great thing about that is if it turns out to suck no harm done, if it turns out to be something amazing, then you get to be pleasantly surprised. Honestly, if you compare this poster to any of the other three... alright, alright, it is just a teaser, fair enough. And I am really excited about the rumored scene where Indy outruns a boulder using his walker.

Yeah, I know that. Your meaning came across perfectly clear. It is not that it bothers or distracts me. I would think YOU would want your book to be as accurate as possible. I imagine a lot of people are going to be reading your book over the years to come, most of them will not even notice it, but inevitably there will be a handfull who do. When it really comes down to it, it doesn't matter one bit. As long as the important facts that are discussed in the book are accurate, that is all that matters. And with all the time, research and care you have put into this thing, I don't have too much doubt that they are.

You see, this is the sort of occasion where you run down to your local B&L/newstand/where ever you buy this sort of thing and pay the $2.95 (are they still $2.95? Surely not, seems pretty cheap, $4.95 maybe?) for a copy. No need to subscribe. It sure helps having friends like Mielr who still subscribe to it to let you know when there is something worthwhile though. Thanks Mielr!

Seriously, I kid you not, immaculate conception has absolutely nothing to do with not having a blood spot from the woman loosing her virginity. The word immaculate means spotless, pure, flawless, etc. Its association with Mary and Jesus comes from the Catholic idea of the immaculate conception, ie Mary was conceived immaculately. This does not mean her mom was a virgin, or that her mom did not bleed or anything else like that. And it has nothing to do with the way in which Jesus was conceived. It does not derive from some other etymological meaning, or any like that. Like I said, the word "immaculate" became associated with the word "conception" simply because of the Catholic idea of immaculate conception.

Ha ha, the first thing you see when you go there is the "popular photos" window and every singe picture is a slave Leia pic. Seems pretty pointless, but then again I think SW.com is pretty pointless. Circa 1999 I used to visit TF.N, which I felt was superior to SW.com in everyway, but I have not payed a visit to them since long before the release of AOTC, and never joined the boards there. SO I guess the fact that I have not felt the need to visit an SW site for seven years (I came to OT.com for the preservations and interesting tecnnical discussion, and only wander into the Gener SW discussion when I feel bored) does't make me the best judge of what is and is not a good/worthwhile SW site.

Yeah, but in common understanding when you say "Immaculate conception" people understand "virgin birth." To me, it seems that since "Immaculate (free of sin, virginal) conception" is not just a title but also simply a description it is still apt to use it in this broader sense, though its true that in Catholic theology it refers to a specific event (ie Mary's conception).

Outside of the Catholic idea of sex being dirty, immaculate conception wouldn't even make any sense in regards to Anakin. Unless we are talking about physical dirtiness or messiness, but that is part of the fun... At anyrate, immaculate has never meant virginal. It may not be just a title, and it may be a decription, but even outside of Catholic doctrine it still simply means clean and doesn't refer to virgin. I don't really see any evidence of the term even being applicable in any broader sense to apply to the idea of a virgin birth other than by the misconception of what the word actually means. Even if you search "immaculate" in wikipedia (the ultimate scholarly source of information, LOL) it will redirect you to "immaculate conception" with a link at the top that say if you meant the virginal conception of Jesus Christ, see Incarnation (Christianity) or Virgin Birth of Jesus. So it is enough of a misconception that wikipedia places a direct link to the "virgin birth" page from the "immaculate conception" page, but it still recongnizes that they are two different things.

Sorry, I am certianly not trying to nitpick your work. I love the book you wrote and have even recommended it to some friends from outside the forum and they too read it and liked it. I am trying to help you with a tiny bit of constructive critisim, but I know as well as anyone when help isn't wanted it can be very annoying. If this is the case, my sincere apologies.

I am pretty sure Zombie knows the difference between lose and loose. When proof reading such a large work, it is very easy to miss little things like that. I reassure you more scholarly works than Zombie's book have gone two or three editions without catching a mistake as small as the difference between loose and lose.

As for the immaculate conception, I can back caligula up on that one, it refers to Mary, not Jesus. Immaculate conception (clean conception, meaning conception without sin, not without the participation of a male as in the virgin birth), is often confused with the incarnation or virgin birth by non Catholics. I am not a Catholic, and have been corrected on the matter myself, for me it had always seemed natural to assume that "clean conception" refered to a conception without the "dirtiness" of sex. While most people probably don't even notice it, that bit does come off as a glaring mistake to anyone who knows the difference.

Blade Runner 2, 4, and 5-disc sets in December

Yeah, I usually don't spend money on big DVD boxsets or special collection. If it is a movie I really want to own, then usually the bare minimum does it for me, but when it comes to BR this is not the case. This is the set I think all of us BR fans have been waiting a long time for. I am really annoyed about the four disc and five disc sets though, I really want that fifth disc with the workprint on it, but I couldn't care less about the brief case or the extra bits it comes with, and I certianly don't want to spend so much extra money for them and the last disc. Why couldn't they just include the last disc with the four disc set and make it a five disc set without the brief case? I guess I am just going to have to cope with not having that last disc.

One of the biggest reasons I have heard for parents homeschooling their kids was because they felt they could give their kids a better education than the public school system, and in a lot of cases, they are right. I really don't see that video as a reason why you shouldn't home school your kids, (however, I do see that video as a reason for not naming your child Evan. Kidding. Sorry), keep in mind he is thirteen years old and on public television and in front of a huge audience. While some people may do just find under such conditions, others don't, he seemed pretty nervous and didn't seem to know how to react to the jokes. Now, a few things the kid admitted to, such as not playing video games, and the whole piano recital thing shows signs of parents who push him too far. It is sad when parents cannot cope with the idea of a kid being a kid and decide he must be a miniture version of an adult. I admit, some home schooling parents do this, but I myself have known many kids who were homeschooled and homeschooling families, and have found most of them to be well balanced, resulting in kids who were well educated and also had very good social skills. There are homeschooling communities everywhere, if parents choose to participate in these, then their kids are receiving a good deal of socialization among other children.

Yeah, for a second I had thought Dayv was arguing with himself. I thought maybe he would slipt into two Dayv, a good Dayv, and a bad Dayv. Then the good Dayv could have taken a shot gun and blown away the other Dayv and said either "Good Dayv, bad Dayv, I'm the Dayv with the gun." Then so long as he didn't screw up saying the magic words, we could have been free of the lowercase writing, illiterate bad Dayv. But at a second glace at the names I realized it was {DoS}.

Fortunately this political party is very small and doesn't have enough votes to be of any significance politically.

On another note, a lot of old churches in the Netherlands used to have 2 entrances. 1 in the south wall for the men and 1 in the north wall for the women (although most if not all have been replaced by 1 entrance in the west wall). As I understand it when the churches were build (in the dark/middle ages) people believed everything dark and evil came from the north and it was the fault of a woman, eve, that the Paradise was lost so the women had to enter the church on the north, dark side of the church. Could this believe also have something to do with this religious political party banning women?

I don't now where they got the whole evil from the North thing. Historically women have often been considered inequal to men in many cultures. I would say both the silly political party, and the old Netherland churches are both products of misogynistic backgrounds.

Reminds me of an old movie theater in this small town I lived in for a few months. The theater had a front entrance and a side entrance via an alley. The front entrance led to the concession area, then into the theater. While the alley entrance led directly to the balcony. There was no connection from through the front doors where you could get to the balcony, only through the alley entrance. And from the balcony the only way to reach the concession stand or the restrooms was by leaving and entering through the front. This struck me as extremely odd and made no logical sense to me until it was explained to me that the theater was very old, and during the time it was built it was common to make the balcony the "black" section and have it cut off from the rest. Black people bought there tickets at the box office, then were pointed to the alley entrance. They were never allowed to enter into the front, not to buy concessions or to use the restrooms, if they needed to use the restroom during the movie, they had to use the alley. Horrible. I am not that sensitive of a guy, but I was a little choked up after hearing that and having seen the layout of the theater first hand.

Both of the above cases are sickening prejudices.

In the Jewish temple that existed in Jesus' time, there were several distinct areas where only certain people could go. First there was the large open area called the court of gentiles, everybody was allowed here. All gentiles who converted to Judaism were confined to worshiping here. This is also the area that in Jesus' time was being used as a market place for selling animals and exchanging money, which Jesus gets annoyed about at one point and start knocking their tables over. At a point in the court of gentiles there was a barrier that warned gentiles not to pass. After this point there was the court of women, and women were not allowed to go beyond this point (the Netherland churches you mentioned reminded me of this, though it is not quite the same). Next is the court of Israel, where all Jewish men can go, then the court of the priests, where only priests can go, and the Holy of Holies, where only the high priest can go and only once a year. In this case men and women were completely divided for worship, rather than merely having to use two seperate entrances.

Throughout Paul's letters he continually addresses division of men & women and Jew & gentile saying that in Christ these differences no longer exist. At one point Paul even mentions the barrier wall of the temple that seperated the court of the gentiles and the rest of the temple, saying that in Christ this barrier is destroyed.

Some people maybe thinking, "But Paul is clearly a misogynist himself" well, that is not necessarily true. One major example of Paul's misogyny is in 1 Corinthians when he says women must remain silent in the assembly (Church). So women are ineqal and not allowed to speak while men can? If you look a little deeper and do a fair exegesis of the letter to the Corinthians you will find that in other verses he instructs women to take turns when they feel they have something important to say and to be careful not to interupt each other. So if Paul warns them not to interupt each other, then it wouldn't make much sense to say later in the same letter, don't speak at all. What it actually says is for women to keep silent during the assembly and to ask their husbands any questions they had once they get home. In Corinth only men would recieve any kind of formal education, so it seems more like this verse is addressing women who don't understand something turning to their husbands and asking them to explain it to them in the middle of the service, which would be distracting to those people around them, so it makes sense for Paul to say, hey please don't talk during the assembly, save your questions till after it is over. Unfortunately this verse and a few others have been used as an excuse for Christians to continue treating women as inferiors.

There is this christian political group/party in the Netherlands that believe woman shouldn't vote, shouldn't be able to become a member of a political party and shouldn't be politically active. They claim to follow Gods word in this. By following God's word I assume they are talking about the Bible. I would like to know if there is anyone who can tell me how they could possibly have come to this conclusion. I guess it doesn't literally say this about women in the Bible so I would like to know if there are parts that can be interpreted this way.

That is completely unbiblical. Even Zombie's post about the possibilty of there being such a passage in the Old Testament is simply not the case (for one it was not a democracy, so the idea of voting in the way we think of it even being mentioned in the Old Testament would be absurd, for another, even one of the Jewish judges, which was a ruling position, was a woman).

Christians are under the new law, they do not follow Jewish law (which is what Zombie is refering to). Christian doctrine teaches that when Christ came he fullfilled the old law, and now the restrictions of that law do not apply. That means no circumcision for Christians, not burnt offereings, and that all things that were considered unclean are now clean. The argument often comes up around here that we Christians are hypocrytical and choosing to obey certian parts of the Bible selectively (and that may be the case, but not due to the examples of Christians not following the old law that is so often brought up here), let me put this to rest right now. Seriously, it is part of our doctrine that the Old Testament Law is not to be followed.

Paul wrote to the church in Galatia, "Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed. So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law. You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise." - Galatians 3:23-29

In Christ there is no "male" or "female" we are all equal. Groups like that "Christian" political group/party in the Netherlands are either very misguided, or they just want to use religion as an excuse to oppress women. Whatever their motive, they are both wrong and unbiblical.

Hellhound, good job showing them what for. Score one point for Christians whoohoo <- tounge in cheek! ("loyal Christians" that behave and act like Hellhound make me seriously want to consider converting to atheism).
