Star Wars: The Best of 2007 (Looking Back at 30 Years)

FWIW, the original BTTF DVD set was actually mis-framed and the studio had to set up an exchange program to replace the discs.

Yeah, that was pretty bad, but that was a mastering flaw, and not part of the design. The BTTF DVD is still a great example of how to treat a classic series. I would love nothing more than to have all three Star Wars films in one simple package just like the BTTF set. A set like that, containing a measly three dual-layer discs, with anamorphic widescreen and static menus seems like something so simple, yet we will never see it.

That was hilarious Scruffy. It is pretty sad that this is what we have come to expect from them.

Any one hear any news on season 4? Are we getting any episodes this year or do we have to wait till 2009? I know I should just look it up myself, but just feeling too lazy too, and it seems that anytime I look up anything about the writer's strike it becomes hard to find up to date and accurate info.

Depressing, yeah, but I think it would be intense. Dunno if it would make it better, but I'd like it more.

---SPOILERS---

That would be a pretty pointless short film, not so much depressing as extremely lame. But then again I have never seen a fan edit I liked and have considered them all lame other than extended editions and the earlier fan edits of the prequels.

As far as the religious theme, it wasn't exactly tacked on, it was kind of a minor underlying thing through out. Throughout the whole thing with Nevil's family and their prayer on the helicopter you get the idea that they were a fairly religious family and that Nevil lost his faith after the loss of his family and all that happened. The fact of the matter is that the majority of the movie takes place with Nevil alone with his dog, if you were to take all the scenes with Nevil interacting with other people you can see that the religious bit didn't just pop out of nowhere at the end. Later he says that God didn't cause this, man did. And that if God did exist something like this wouldn't have happened. Later he sees the tatoo and remebers what his daughter said and realizes that he was wrong and that God was saving mankind after all.

That said, the whole "Signs"esque tatoo thing I felt was unessesary and kind of dumb. I would have liked it better if the girl would have had a good reason for believeing that there was a survivor's colony other than just a feeling and if Nevil did what he did not because he saw the "sign from God" but because it was the obvious thing to do, he saw that the cure had worked and that he needed to save the girl and her son. That would be very easy to accomplish with a fan edit and would effectively remove the unessesary religious ending.

The Orange Box seems really cool though.

Ignore the whole complaining about steam thing. It isn't that bad. Just a bunch of assholes that will whine about anything.

Yeah, I know it isn't that bad, but I would be one of those assholes who complain about steam. For me it really isn't a matter of complaining about everything, but really just the principal of the matter. I'd like to think that someday I could play all my games that I spent my money on with my computer without having to worry about being connected to the internet. What happens if Valve goes bottom up? Or if there is a great worldwide economic collapse and the internet becomes a thing of the past? Or if some strange ancient germ renders the entire population (including Valve's IT guys) into blood thirsty vampires with myself as the sole survivor living in my own fortified honky paradise and I get tired of playing chess against a granite bust and decide to play some Half-Life 2...

Or perhaps I just want to be able to play my games without having to go online and varify the validity of my honestly purchased product while the guy who pirates it gets to play it internet free.

The goal of the movie or even the original book was never to make you fear for the future, no matter what people try to read into them. The goal was to be entertaining. The movie ends on a high note, the book ends on a note of irony. I suppose people who found the film depressing would find the book even more so. If you want a less depressing version of almost the exact same film, watch Omega Man. The Will Smith film follows Omega Man much more faithfully than its namesake. There is also a really cool (and very graphic) graphic novel that very faithfully follows the story line of the original novel (which was about loneliness, vampires, and a man seeking to come up with a scientific explaination for why the world's entire population turned into vampires save for him). If the original book had been followed more faithfully as far as the vampire aspect goes and given an R rating, this thing could have gained fame as a very creepy horror film.

I also think Scott is one of the greatest directors of our time. There are many of his films I don't care for, but when his films are good, they are really good. Kingdom of Heaven would be one of those I would place in the "don't care for" category, but now that I hear everyone talking about how brilliant the DC was, I will be watching it at the first possible chance. That was one of those films I really wanted to like, but while watching it I felt like I was watching the same thing I had seen a million times before in any other "epic". It just felt old and tired. From the description of the DC it sounds great.

In all previous pics Nanner has posted he has had short hair. I have no idea what his parents hair policies are, he could have been raised by a pack of wolves for all I know. I was just kidding around based on the contrast of his pre-college pics and his post-college pic (I believe he has mentioned being in college now, right? I could be wrong though).

Speaking of Czech beers, I just had fantastic Czech beer at lunch today, unfortunately I didn't pay much attention to the label. I know a store that sells them and plan to pick up a few bottles tomorrow, if I can be bothered I might edit this post and add in the name. Usually I switch over to wine during the winter, but I have been much more in the mood for beer lately.

As for American beers... that is a very unfortunate situation. I prefer water.

Even in our day of diminishing intellect, reality tv, wikipedia, youtube, and blogs I would still be inclined to classify comic books and graphic novels in their own class and not as a sub class of literature. They are much more like a play or a script than they are like a novel in that dialogue and narraration are written and action is depicted through images rather than relying soley on words for everything.

You'd pay full DVD price for a VERY crappy cartoon with a run time of under ten minutes? All things considered it is a hell of a lot worse than the Ewok movies, at least those tried to be something, the HS is just a crappy variety show with the SW name tacked along with a few of its characters. Other than that the most SW aspect of it are people parading around in modified monkey suits pretended to be Chewbacca's family. It would have honestly taken them an immense effort to have made the HS any worse than it is. The thing is already as bas as if not worse than Volgon poetry.

NO!!! It must not be released!!! It would be catastrophic! Thing of all the evil that poor unsuspecting young Star Wars would be subjected to. "Huh, the Star Wars Holiday Special? Never heard of that before, I love Star Wars so I'll have to put in on my Christmas list! I best it is going to be great!" It would be awful. The suscide rate among young SW fans would go through the roof. Even the fans who loved the prequels have no idea what they are in for with this thing. Nobody who knows what it really is would buy this thing save for the few masochists who have a hard on for shows that make you want to ram your head repeatedly into a brick wall. Besides, I am whole heatedly against the sale of DVDs that require a sergeons general warning to be printed on them.

As for the CGI effects, I was very disappointed. What did CGI offer that good makeup and stuntwires couldn't? I think a slightly slower monster would have been more effective instead these superspeed zombies. If they had been real actors, it would have worked better. Hollywood really has to get over this CGI fascination and get back to some roots.

Um, yeah, good luck with that happening. CGI may look a little faker, but it's usually far cheaper than using puppeteers and models. If a model doesn't blow up right, the whole thing has to be rebuilt. If it doesn't quite blow up right in a computer, you just change a few parameters and re-render.

Right, but we are talking about infected humans here, not exploding cars and space ships, or complicated puppets. We are merely talking about using makeup instead of CG monsters. If you havent seen the movie you wont realize how very akward and ineffective the infected of I Am Legend appear. It seriously brings what could have been a great movie down to something to laugh at the cheesiness of. The whol thing about the adrenaline gland is retarded, if something doesn't work, don't do it. This simply doesn't work. The CG in this thing seemed extremely bad, it is very comparible to that of the Mummy, and the Mummy is a pretty old movie now.

Anybody else read the book? I found it interesting that they kept the title "I Am Legend" since it did not fit too well with the new plot and ending of the film. The name I Am Legend implies that he is refering to himself, which is the case in the brilliantly ironic ending of the original novel, but in the movie he never even comes to realize that he will one day be a legend and it is somebody else calling him a legend. Just thought it was kind of interesting, doesn't seem like it would make sense to people unfamiliar with the novel.

While I would have enjoyed seeing this follow the book more closely to the book (i.e. hoards of undead/infected people attcking his house every night, waking up every morning, going through the daily rutine of preparing the house for another nights attack) but that whole theme has been copied by so many other stories and movies since IAL was first published the whole thing has become a little cliche. I do feel they did a good job capturing the whole "last man on earth" aspect. It is ashame to see the actors, Smith and the dog namely, go through such an effort to deliver such a preformance, then have the whole movie drug down by poor CG models.

Yeah, this is based off of one of my favorite books and I have been looking forward to it for a long time. When I heard Smith was in it I wasn't sure how he would do, I was expecting the I, Robot "I am a total badass" kind of character, until I saw In Pursuit of Happiness which made me think it could work, by the time the trailer came out I was sold. I thought he did excellent, probabbly the best portrayed Robert Nevil to hit the screen yet (there were two previous adaptions of the novel). I really liked the movie alot, but I did feel like I was watching a work print with the CG monsters as stand in effects before the real models had been perfected. Unfortunately, as much as I liked the film in just about any other way, the CG infected make this think almost unwatchable. I don't even feel like I can say to anyone, "yeah, that movie is awesome" because it looks so awful. I really had a hard time watching it because of this. Usually bad effects don't get in the way of me enjoying of movie, but this was unforgivable. I felt like I was watching The Mummy Returns during any scene with the infected. I wish they could have gone for more realistic looking infected people. The movie could have benefited from this greatly. Look at Resident Evil and other zombie/undead films, they all look a lot better than this, but in most of those the acting and story telling is cheese, in this case it is the other way around. Here is to hoping a SE of I Am Legend is someday produced with much better CG.

Just Released: The Star Wars Holiday Special RiffTrax!
Time
No, they are alright. I was the one going on about feeling they were subpar, so you already no my opinion. But that was not to say they are not worth watching. I guess riffing good movies is not as funny as the cheap low budget dogs they use to do, but I am not sure you could consider most of the movies they riff "good movies" I mean, were talking about Glitter, Road House, that Brittany Spear's movie whatever it was called, Firewall, Revenge of the Sith. Sure they do a lot of popular films, and some are pretty decent movies, but a lot of them like I just mentioned are horrible movies. Then there are movies with just Mike riffing them by himself, which kind of gives you the sad impression of a guy going to the movies by himself and talking during it to keep himself company. I am not sure how many he did Solo, Preditor was the only one I watched. Riffing definately works better when you have others to work off of. I throughly enjoyed Fellowship of the Rings riff, and that was a riff of a good movie. But I had a hard time staying awake during the Phantom Menace riff and that was of a bad movie. So I am not so sure about the good movie bad movie theory. They riffed a few TV show pilots too, I watched the riff of the Lost Pilot and thought it was one of the funnier riffs I have seen yet.

If you are wondering if they are worth $4 bucks each, I would say with you being a MSTK3 fan and all, you would probably find it worth it. If you have never listened to any, the SWHS is a good place to start, and maybe try Lord of the Rings and the prequel trilogy (they have riffed all three) or some other movie/s you own and enjoy watching. That way if you decide you don't like them, you can just give up.

Indiana Jones IV
Time
There is an alternative universe out there were Tom Selleck is Indiana Jones, Kurt Russel is Han Solo and Alec Baldwin played in all three Jack Ryan movies. In this universe, Harrison once had a minor role in an old film called American Graffiti, then spend the rest of his career as a set builder for Fox studios. Interestingly enough, in that same universe Mark Hamil is a huge action star who has landed countless lead roles since his climb to fame from a once popular sci-fi movie titled Star Wars. Star Wars has a large cult fanbase, but it never managed to produce any sequels, its director and writer decided he had had enough fun with sci-fi and decided to move on to more serious film making. Another thing about that universe that is worth mentioning, is the fact that Firefly is beginning its fifth season.

It's like putting the Episode 1 trailer before Meet Joe Black.

Just came back from seeing I Am Legend with one of my friends. We didn't see the IMAX version, but it did have The Dark Knight trailer at the beginning. It looks pretty good, but my goodness, the whole thing is one Joker sound clip after another, kind of got old pretty quick.

As for putting the Batman promo video at the beginning of the IMAX version of I Am Legend being like putting a preview of Episode 1 in front of Meet Joe Black, it is nothing that sinister. They both aim at the same level audience and are both made by Warner Bros. so it makes sense. I don't think you can compare a sappy slow moving love story involving the grim reaper, with a slow moving story about the only man left on earth who is immune to a virus that turns people into blood thirsty vampires.

Actually, logic would dictate bringing in George Lazenby, wouldn't it? ^_~

I would have said Lazenby, but he was just a one shot deal, and Connery got the role back after Lazenby, then ultimately lost it to Moore. I think Moore was the one Connery was competing with when he starred in Never Say Never Again *shudder*. So I figured Moore was the better choice. Neither one would make a very good Henry though.

I was pretty much just joking as I'm sure you were, but I thought I'd chime back in to say that you're right. Roger Moore was still the current Bond when Never Say Never Again *lackofshudderbecauseIactuallyrememberenjoyingthatmovie* came out. Kind of a Battle of the Aging Bonds, I guess.

I enjoy Bond movies, and have seen them all, many more than once. However, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Never Say Never Again, and A View to A Kill I have made a vow to myself to never ever watch again. Might be another one on that list, but I can't think of it right now. But I have heard people who list On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Never Say Never Again among their favorites.

Dennis Quiad as Indiana Jones??? Wow! If Harrison Ford were to ever have to be replaced then it is time to stop making Indiana Jones movies.

"In fact I think it was actually better than some of the MST3K episodes!"

Yeah, it definately was. MST3K had some duds. It wasn't that every single episode was spill your guts funny. But if we were to consider RiffTrax as a sort of series parallel to MST3K as Star Trek:TNG was to Star Trek, then I would say that the overall series of MST3K was a lot funnier in general than RiffTrax. I think it is the switch over from old bad movies to mostly modern big budget films that has taken it down a few notches. Having never been a fan of the intermissions in MSTK3 and the intentionally cheesy sub plots of each episode, I thought RiffTrax would have been an improvment when I first heard about them, but after having watched several (and some are side splitters! Top Gun for instance) I feel that they mostly fall way short of MST3K. The Riff for SWHS however, I feel ranks up there with some of the better MST3K episodes. Sure, it is no "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank", but it is quite good none the less.

The old episodes of MST3K were scripted right? I am pretty sure the RiffTrax are on the fly, which is probably one of the reasons they are not quite as good.

Technically Christmas is more of a secular holiday nowdays. But I believe you should celebrate it how you want to.

No matter what you do, it will always be a religious holiday, but since the Christians stole it from the pagans in the first place I guess it is fair enough if it is someday stolen from the Christians and passed off as a secular holiday. But that day is not today, turn on the radio and find the stations playing Christmas music, chock full of religious references. Even if there are stations that only play songs that do not excplicitly mention baby Jeuss or any other religious things, roll the dial around to the next one. I was in the mall the other day, and the stores are playing Christmas music filled with references to a kid being born in a manger, or Christ our savior being born on Christmas day. Even the very name of the holiday is undeniably religious. Technically Christmas is a 100% religious holiday, that is celebrated in non religious ways by both Christians and atheist a like.

At any rate, while it may be celebrated in America by Christians and non Christians, this is not the case in most parts of the world, as the song ADM posted points out in a very ethnocentric way.

That said,

MERRY XMAS EVERYBODY!!!!
