Star Wars fighting game that won't suck? (Star Wars characters in Soul Calibur IV)
Time
Okay, I finally got unlazy enough to read the article. It is just Yoda and Vader showing up as guest characters on Soul Calibur IV. So it isn't really even a SW game. All it is really is LFL playing the pimp and whoring out some of its properties. I guess it was kind of a cool gimmick with Soul Calibur III when they put a different bonus character in the game for each console. And as much out of place as a character like the Spawn might have been in such a game, Vader and Yoda are incredibly out of place. Kind of reminds me of Toy Story where the kid would have his space marine doll fighting an evil Mr. Potato head. It is like a kid is taking his Star Wars toys and piting them against characters from an entirely different series of toys. But hey, those marketing guys really know their stuff. Just think of all the SW fans who are going to be dishing out money for a game they would not have otherwise.

Is George Lucas a fan of Star Wars?
Time
Welcome to OT.com Cj. There are actually a good number of us here who are huge Blade Runner fans, not to mention that we have a few Ridely Scott fans floating around too. Most of us here feel the same way you do when it comes to George not releasing his original versions, which is becoming common practice these days. In Scott's case, he didn't even have full creative control over the first two versions of BR, George has had that for his SW films from the beginning, and yet you can still get fully remastered editions of each version of Blade Runner, even the workprint. The Final Cut, which is Scott definitive cut of the film, is the first cut that Scott has had a full say in. This is not because he keeps changing his mind like ol' George does, but because he was never allowed to do it right in the first place. While George may have bothered to release the originals as a special feature on his latest rerelease of the SE trilogy on DVD, you may have noticed that they are only slightly above YouTube quality (okay, that is a minor exageration). We can only hope that by the next release of the SW trilogy, which will be on HD media who knows how many years down the road, George will follow the lead of other great titles such as Blade Runner and give SW similar treament.

^Wow, I feel like I am in the first grade again. Anyway, I'd give it up if I were you, I don't think lordjedi is going to take offense to such infantile "insults". As retarded of an insult a simple f off may be, it is a hell of a lot more mature than an exagerated inference of someones homosexuality based on their disagreeing with you.

Not really trying to stand up for lj, he is more than able to handle himself, just felt like commenting on the increasingly childish insults I see coming from someone who I usually consider to be rather reasonable.

Peter Jackson evidently IS returning for The Hobbit...sort of...

To me it is an incredible shame to see the movies before the books when it comes to LOTR. The movies are okay, but it is nine hours of entertainment, then it is over. Now the book is spoiled. Reading the book first you get all the enjoyment and excitment of the book, then when your finished you can watch the movies and still enjoy them just the same. The movies also have the very unfortunate side effect of robbing the free reign of your imagination regarding the characters, places and events of the book. If see the movie first Frodo will forever be Elijah Wood when reading the books. Anyone who has read the books first will have came up with their own look and feel of all the characters and places in the books. Imagining the world is IMHO one of the greatest parts of reading the books. Just the fact that Dayv said he recommends seeing the movies first seems to indicate that he himself saw the movies first.

I am a strong believer that films ruin books, but books don't ruin films. There are some exceptions to this, especially if the movie is better than the book on which it is based. Planet of the Apes is one of those I would highly recommend seeing the movie first. With things like Fight Club it does not matter because the book and the movie are very nearly identical, no mater which you see/read first, you will feel like you have read/seen the other before.

Your NES2 had connector pin problems? Or you are saying that the NES2s don't fall victim to the connector pin problems that your old NES suffers from? The connector pin problems of the old NES are very easy to fix actually, just a little rubbing alcohol to clean the connectors and a small screw driver to carefully bend them back into position so that the NES cartridges will make a tight connection. Alternatively a replacement connector piece can be purchased for less than $10 online. The replacement pieces are made out of better quality metal that does not suffer from the extreme oxidation problem the original NES connector did. Just about any old broken NES can be fixed by just replacing the connectors. Mine was so bad that several of my games wouldn't even work, now works as good as the day I got it for Christmas as a little kid.

Here is an amazing story about the durability of the old NES. I was playing The Adventures of Link while waiting for my wife to get ready so we could embark on our six hour drive to my folks house for Thanksgiving. This was 5 am Wednesday morning. Somehow through all of the constant urging my wife to hurry up so we could get on the road and beat the traffic, I forgot to shut my NES off. When we returned Sunday afternoon I was surprised to see the red light was on. I turned on the TV and there was the title screen of Zelda II. Thing still works just fine, system or cartridge were not even warm. You can read all sorts of stories online about people being on their second or third PS2/Xbox/Xbox360 or about somebody accidently leaving there PS2 on all night and waking up to find a melted laser or a burnt out motor. I have had this NES for 20 years. I wonder how many kids will be able to say the same about their Xbox, 360 or PlayStation/2/3 20 years from now.

Star Wars fighting game that won't suck? (Star Wars characters in Soul Calibur IV)
Time
I have never played Soul Calibur, but I have yet to hear anything bad about it. Maybe this will be okay, I guess I am just burnt out on generic Star Wars games that emulates or is a mod of every other popular game out there. We saw far too much of that crap during the PSX era and the last few years on the PC. But I am still waiting for and looking forward to Grand Theft Speeder: Tantooine.

The whole hovering Yoda fighting with his tiny little green lightsaber is something that has always brought me sudders every since the release of a certian film in 2002. So I can't say those picture excite me.

Too true. But come on, we all like to pretend we are the hero of our own comedy or the victim of our own tragedy. We could all use the ego boost of the government showing a particular interest us, or even better than the local government, an international secret society, or intergalactic aliens, or best of all a combination of the three.

Just to avoid flaming, this post was not directed at you FF, just my thoughts on conspiracy theories in general and agreement with lordjedi's post about most people not being important enough to attract that kind of attention.

I have no idea what C3PX meant by his 'No more fuckin immigrant no matter where they come from' comment.

"Having spent a long time with some very bigoted Americans it's definitely a possibility in my opinion. I know you're not all like that by a long shot, but there's definitely a good number of backwards thinking morons with guns running around in that part of the World."

Just felt very flattered by your opinions on my fellow countrymen, or should I say my fellow backward thinking morons running around with guns. I forgot that you said you spent most of your time in L.A. (am I right on that?) so I guess in that case I should cut you a lot of slack for that comment, L.A. is a pretty screwed up place. I am just kind of sick of people coming to visit America, then going nowhere but to places like L.A. and New York which are extremely small samples of the overall U.S. population, then going home and saying how awful Americans are. Most Americans that I know who spend just a little time in L.A. tend to loose their faith in humanity for a while. I don't think there are as many backward thinking morons that own guns in our country as you might think. Or are they backward thinking to you simply because they are the type of people who would own guns?

As for the possibility of Obama being assassinated, I really don't think that is as big of a risk as you might think. And I am not sure how much on the road to being the first ever black President Obama really is, I think there are still enough prejudice people out there that he doesn't have too much of a chance(though I wish I were wrong on that). In recent years we've had black people in pretty high positions of power, and nothing has happened to them yet, I don't see why a guy merely running for President should be any different. I'd think guys like Sharpton and Jackson would be higher potential targets for a backward thinking racist gun owner. Though I do think Obama stands a far better chance of being elected President than Hilary does.

I am not sure it has ever tried to explian the whispers as having had anything to do with the others, unless I missed something. The whispers have always been more closely connected to the smoke monster than to the others. Don't forget about the smoke monster, Jacob, or the unaging Richard, I am confident there is still something cool to come with those things.

LOL, I like how you presented that in such a dramatic way. For some reason I had always just assumed you were, and it never made me feel like I should expect anything less from this because of it. I don't think too many of us wouldn't have supported you just because you are a teenager. The thing that made this thing worth following and looking forward to in the
first place was what you were trying to do, and how dedicated and determined you were to do it.

I don't blame you for taking a break on this thing, and school is very important. I have no doubt you will return to this thing once you get the chance since you have dedicated so much time and energy into it already. I also think you made the right choice by not releasing the incomplete version of this film. I will be looking forward to seeing what becomes of this in the future. Until then, good luck with your school. I doubt that it will be of any harm to you if you show this sort of determination in your efforts to get into film school or in whatever else you reach for in life.

It's not the twists that keep me going. I find twists gimmicky and pointless most of the time. Really what I find great about the show is all the literary and philisophical references and themes. The "twists" (like the hatch thing) more than being merely a change of idea, really reflects something deeper. We have Jack who doesn't believe in miracles, and suddenly witnesses one through the experience with his wife, whom he decides must have been brought to him through fate, then she leaves him and he realizes once and for all that every thing in life is all chance. On the other hand we have Locke who recovers his ability to walk once crashing on the island and realizes beyond a shadow of doubt that there is some sort of higher power. Once they discover the crazy Scottish guy living in an underground hatch with a computer that saves the world, Jack decides the whole idea of the buttom is rediculous, while Locke whole heartedly believes in the button. Finally Locke sees something that convinces him his faith was misplaced and he decides that he has been wrong all along, but at the very last instant, he discovers that the button is real, and also the cause for the plane crashing, which effectively confirms to him that he was wrong to give up on his faith and that the plane really did crash for a purpose. The twists (i.e. the Pearl proving that the Swam was merely a psychology experiment then the twist of the Pearl actually being the real experiment) that took place were not just for the sake of twisting in a gimmicky way. You can find all sorts of religious and philisophical ideas just within the hatch plotline.

"It's fun being fooled, but if there's nothing substantial when all is said and done, the twist is merely a superficial gimmick and I generally have no reason to ever enjoy that story again. Using twists alone is pure sensationalism as far as I'm concerned."

I couldn't agree with you more on that. My argument is that substantial things are being said in the show all along, even within the twists. Also I have always thought that Lost is a show that could easily be ruined by little more than a few minor wrong turns. I really want it to be one of those few shows that I can watch straight through from beginning to end several years down the road, or to be a show that once it is completely finished I can whole heartedly recommend to a friend who has never seen it before.

Hmm, I kind of think the opposite as far as the mysticism goes. All a long it has kind of been showing us supernatural things, then giving us a way to believe they are not supernatural, then throwing out the explaination and pushing us back to believeing they are supernatural. I don't think these things are from indecision on the part of the writers, but rather intentional misdirection. I don't know what is so mundane and pedestrian about the others, they are still pretty creepy and we still know relatively little about them. No we know that they are living in Dharma's old barracks, but they are not Dharma. If you remember when young Ben met Richard Alpert in the woods, Richard was dressed very much like the rag wearing version of the others that we saw early on in season two. Not to mention, he had aged very little over a relatively long period of time. Richard and Ethan both tend to appear in the real world from time to time. I still find both the characters of Richard and Ethan still rather creepy and mysterious. Let's also not forget about Jacob and the look on Richard face when he was told that Ben was taking Locke to see him. Also the Clockwork Orangesque brain washing Alex's boyfriend was undergoing at Ben's orders. The others still are not exactly your average group of doctors.

You mentioned that the others were "merely some pathetic leftovers of a corporate-picnic-gone-bad"??? If you remember correctly, the creepy and mysterious others are what made the corporate picnic go bad and were not actually part of it. They were already there before the corporate picnic began. Yes, a few of the Dharma people joined the others or the hostiles, but that is not to make all the others to be thought of as nothing more than left-overs of a band of silly hippy doctors. I am sure the writers are making some things up as they go, and maybe changing a few of their original intentions in favor of things they find more interesting, but I don't think that is going on quite as much as you seem to think.

I think Lost suffers from being a really good show. It doesn't really know its audience, or more accurately, its audience doesn't really know it. You have plenty of fans whose biggest interest is who Kate is going to hook up with and whether or not they will get rescued, people more in it for the drama. Then you have people who are in it for the sci-fi aspect, and others who are in it for the mystery. The whole concept of the show has been interesting to me once I found out what it really was. I mentioned before being bored while my wife watched through season one, but once we hit season two I became the bigger fan. At first it just seemed like a silly drama with some sci-fi characteristics, but it has really turned out to be much more than that. After I began listening to the podcasts and hearing more of the writers and their ideas I stopped worrying about whether or not they would take the show in the right direction or not. I am now certian there is nothing to worry about. There will be mistakes made along the way (Nikki and Paolo not to mention plenty of other aspects of season three), but I feel pretty certian that the worst of the mistakes are at an end and that the writers wont make the mistake of trying to please everybody again, which is what really brought down parts of season three.

By the end of the series all the people who can't wait for secrets to be revealed and are constantly demanding answers, as well as all the ones who are in it solely for the drama, I think are going to be grossly disappointed with the show, simply because it was never for them in the first place, they just didn't know it.
