Fellas, I propose we begin a new petition. I think we ought to begin petitioning for them to bring back the Threepio's, original taste and all. I for one would be willing to dish out money every couple of weeks in order to keep my cubbard stocked with the things. For once it would be an SW product worth spending money on. As long as they don't pull a "New Coke" kind of thing on us and completely change the recipe.

LOL, why didn't I think of doing something like that. Walk out of the theater and loudly exclaim, "WOW! I can't believe Yoda is Luke and Leia mother!!!"

If George had really wanted to screw with us and make our heads spin more than they did after ESB, he could have had it turn out that Obi-Wan was the real father of Luke and Leia. That would have added some much needed depth to the PT. There were any number of twists he could have pulled on us... perfectly good waste of some incredible opportunites, traded away for some really long advertisments for toys, video games, and some very creative suckers in the form of lightsabers and tongues. Imagine if there had been a Padme sucker of the same design as the Jar Jar sucker, despite being a little creepy for poor Miss Portman, I bet that thing would have out sold the Jar Jar sucker ten to one.

Another thing that can be said for episode one, I honestly miss the laughs I used to get everytime I would go to the store with my friends back in 1999 and we would make fun of the new SW merchandise. Those are probably some of my most memorable moments of the PT era.

Seriously, if you have read anything Christopher Tolkien has said about the films, you would see that the chances of them selling the film rights to any of Tolkien's other stuff to them is pretty much nonexistent. The Tolkien Estate is doing rather well financially, they certianly don't need any of New Line's money to get buy, I doubt New Line could give them a bid high enough to convince them to pimp anymore film rights out to them.

@ Nanner, agreed about a del Toro film adaption of Roverandom being interesting. It would be more than interesting, it would be awesome. Del Toro would be perfect for that. The Father Christmas Letters could potentially make for a very clever film as well.

Ancient Greek subs would be cool for people who can read ancient Greek, or even Greek students, and simply for an addition to the variety of subs on the disc, but all my experience is translating from Greek to English, translating from English into Greek would be a bit of a different dynamic, there would be a lot of vocabulary that wouldn't have an ancient Greek counterpart.

So, since this is an SW movie, would it be blasphemous to include subtitles in the Klingon language? I think it would be cool to have SOTDS in Klingon, being as Klingon is the original language of the works of Shakespeare and all, I think it would add a certian class to SOTDS. On a more serious note, it would be cool to have it translated into Elizabethian English. On an even less serious note, it would be cool to have a subtitle track that displayed the lyrics to Monty Phython songs at opportune times.

Ah, I just remembered, I am fluent in Piglatin! Anyone interested in Piglatin subs? Okay, maybe it is time to take a few steps backwards...

As Sluggo said, sorry about the mess, TM. I hope somepeople come through with some serious languages.

These are games, not historical documentaries. I don't think we really need to be traumatising game players by trying to make statements about the ills of war. Generally, people can separate intertainment from reality. People who play Metal of Honor, or even some of the more violent World War II games don't come out of it saying they know what it is like to be a WWII veteran. Just like people who watch Saving Private Ryan or read All Quiet on the Western Front don't come out feeling like they know what it was like to experience D-Day or to be a conscript in the German army during WWI. These stories may tell us something about an event, or make us see an event in a different and possibly even more realistic light, but they will never tell us what it was really like. Entertainment is not real life, once it becomes real life, it is no longer entertainment.

Even the more violent videogames are not violent for the sake of realism, they are not even realistic depictions of violence.

I agree with RSS about the Tusken kids, it wasn't an attempt at realism, it was just wanton game designing. Bad taste and not very well thought out. But then again, Sandpeople are just animals. Even when Anakin tells Padme he murdered women and children Sandpeople, she tell him not to take it so hard because we all have our bad days, as if the guy were feeling quilty for accidently killing a family of mice while backing his truck into the driveway. Later when Obi-Wan tells her that Anakin has just killed some real[/r] children, she doesn't say "Oh come on Ben, don't tell me you have never had a bad and went about hacking up little kids?" Rather she reacts with great shock and disbelief and says that it could not possibly be true (what the hell was George thinking having the former hero killing little kids? Damn that is sick, just thinking of it now urks me greatly...).

So my theory is that Sandpeople are treated as a subhuman, "under evolved" sort of race, and are not at all regarded on a scale with other aliens, but are treated on the same level as animals. Very dangerous animals that come at night and still your brand new wife you just purchased from from the hovering insect man, and they steal your chicken too. In other words, Sandpeople are very much like Coyotes. Err, actually I was aiming more for humans of different "races" throughout the last 100 year of world history who have been considered more animal than human. Black slaves in America, Aboriginals in Australia, Jews in Deutschland, and so on. Perhaps to LFL and the SW Universe, killing a Sandpeople child is much like killing a black slave child was an unforunate short time ago. I don't even know what I am talking now. But yeah, it was a dumb idea to include this in the game. It is pretty disturbing when it happens off screen in Eps II and III, but to actually have your Jedi required to do this to complete a mission that they are sent on by the forces of good... bad idea.

This kind of reminds me of an article in the Reader's Digest circa 1997 about violence in videogames, oddly it gave Goldeneye a lot of backlash for being a T rated game that had your character gunning down unarmed scientists. I found it funny that out of all the violent games that existed at that time, Goldeneye was the one to get the most flak in that article, just because of the scientists. Obviously the idiot who wrote the article failed to realize that you are NOT suppose to shoot the scientist, you are suppose to rescue them and you'll fail the mission if too many of them die. I'd be like someone saying Rainbow Six was a horrible game because it had you shooting hostages...

I may just watch season 3 at a slow leisurely pace if season 4 will indeed be split and/ or scattered. Help ease the long wait.

oh and cheers for the link C3PX, That was great...

Yeah, that year jump forward was a little disorienting at first. Don't worry, you get quite a few flashbacks to fill in what has happened over that period. I liked the jump forward actually. It seemed like it was going to be a bit of a show changer, but it turned out it was not. I was afraid the pace of the show would really be hurt by the change from ship to planet, but as it turns out the planet stuff was probably the more exciting parts of the season. I was at a point where I was watching episode after episode, but the pacing gets so slow further on in the season I stopped caring and got to a point where I would watch an episode only every couple of weeks. I hope season four picks back up. I really liked season one, season two was pretty good, but season three was downright painful sometimes.

Yes, season four is the end. There is talk of a spin off prequel series, it was brought up a long time ago and put on the "shelf" where it was seemingly forgotten, but some rumors have recently surfaced that it is being considered again.

Yes! This is shaping up to be a pretty decent little cast of characters. Do we have anyothers? I think I shall be Cautious Carl and not say anything about this film. I have never seen the original anime (or any other anime film for that matter), seems like a lot of people have though. Perhaps I should consider the possibility of maybe considering giving this a rent sometime. The question is, is it that good of a film that somebody who is not into anime (it is not that I have anything against anime, it has just never struck me as anything interesting. Most of what I have seen on TV while channel surfing has always seemed pretty teeny bopper) might enjoy it? Anime like this are considered mature films for adults in Japan, right? (I don't mean "mature" or "adult" in the pornographic sense, but in the sense that it might not be odd to see people over the age of 25 buying tickets to see it) Perhaps I should broaden my horizons and watch a few of these kinds of films.

Hep Wanted: my SOTDS edit - translation
Time
Unless you want subtitles in ancient Greek, I am of no help to you (ancient Greek subtitles would be awesome though, but of very little use to anyone). I know bits of several other languages, but only well enough for casual conversation. My wife knows four languages other than English, and is great at translating but she isn't too much of a Star Wars fan... doubt I could talk her into it.

I like that you are going to try to put as many languages on this as you can. I am a huge fan of foreign language subtitles. Translation can be some pretty hard work though, if anyone is willing to translate the entire movie it is no small task they are taking on. While SOTDS varies greatly from Attack of the Clones, I suppose the vast majority of dialog throughout the film is unchanged, right? In other words, if someone where to want to make this job a lot easier for themselves, they could simply cut and paste a lot of the unchanged dialog from the official Spanish/French/German/etc. subtitle track, while only having to do their own translation of the bits that you have changed. This could make what would be a huge task, into something considerably less daunting, if I am not mistaken. Just a quick estimate, how much percentage wise of the dialog in SOTDS would you say has been altered from AOTC? Obviously just about everything spoken by Anakin, and I am sure there are a lot of shortened or altered lines by others characters throughout the film.

Perhaps in addition to your English subtitle track, you could also send your translation volunteers a comprehensive list of all changed dialog and when it appears. Just a thought.

Well, that's idiotic enough. Please god, let this be a rumor. Show some common sense and at least adapt something that Tolkien actually WROTE!

It is pretty clear why they do not. Just look how long it took them to get the legallities of The Hobbit worked out. The Tolkien Estate has not exactly been enthusiastic about the Peter Jackson films, the chances of them selling the rights to some more original Tolkien material is pretty slim. Since they are already entitled to use the characters and locations of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, they can simply just make up a feature length epilogue to The Hobbit/prolgue to The Lord of the Rings, without having to deal with the Tolkien Estate or dish out any money to them.

Proof I was obsessed with Star Wars, even then...
Time
For one of my birthdays when I was a kid, I had a Darth Vader cake. It was made out a cake pan exactly like the one shown in the bottom of this link of a list of crappy Star Wars collectables.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ashen1/ashen/menu/swars.htm

It was pretty cool actually. The cake came out with great detail. It was a chocolate cake and it looked great, but that was before the icing had been applied... the problem was my mom was not skilled at applying fancy frosting patterns as instructed on the paper that came with the cake pan, so when the icing was spread over it the detail is buried and now you just have a cake somewhat in the shape of Vaders helmet. The frostings default color was white (powdered sugar based) and food coloring was added to make it dark. How do you make black frosting? By mixing all the colors together... erm... maybe not. The frosting came out a dark moss green color... so I had a cake with moss green frosting that was somewhat shaped like Vader helmet, but you wouldn't have caught on had you not been told. Needless to say, it wasn't the hippest birthday party to begin with, and the cake certianly didn't help things out any. But none of that mattered because I got this awesome toy Rancor with a little button in the back that made his mouth open and close. That Rancor was destined to become one of my favorite SW toys ever, right next to my Death Star playset, my AT-AT walker, and of course my Millenium Falcon. Heh, I just remembered that my toy Rancor once accidentally swallowed one of my Jawa figures, I had a really hard time getting him back out too.

Info Wanted: Any highly recommended fan edits (non SW) ?
Time
After experiencing my first episode one edit, I decided that fan edits where incredible things that could really make a lot of improvements to certian movies. After having checked out a number of non-Star Wars fan edits, I have decided that there are very few that are worth downloading. Now after years of fan editing, we have a huge ocean of fan edits, and since just anyone can decide to make a fan edit, most of them are very amaturish and a lot of them just plain suck. I do not mean to discourage people from doing edits, or to discourage anyone from checking out some fan edits, but this is how I feel about the majority of them.

With that said, among the best non SW edits are ADM's unofficial extended editions, they are usually quite good. Usually his are good movies to start with though, he just reinserts the deleted scenes into the appropriate spots. ADM (ADigitalMan) has some true fan edits he has done as well, since he knows what he is doing when it comes to editing, you are probably safe with just about anything by him. Special projects like Jambe's Building Empire and Returning to Jedi, while more documentaries than fan edits, they are certianly some of the best things to come out of this community (both Star Wars related though). If you like Evil Dead, Ridgeshark recently released his Primitive Screwhead Edition of Army of Darkness. It is a more of an extended cut, but there is also a great deal of editing and other work that went into it. It is top notch. I know there are a few others I would like to mention, but I can quite think of them at the moment.

For it to be a good edit, the editor really needs to put their heart into it, as adywan has done with Star Wars Revisted. When people are editing movies that they sorta kinda liked, you cannot expect them to put that much love into their edit. You read the descriptions of many FEs and read the editor saying things like "I remember the first time I saw this dog of a film in the theater. I nearly puked! But what we should have now is something that might actually be bearable to watch."
To me those kinds of descriptions are like saying, "Well, here is a sake full of dog crap. I left it in the sun for a bit so it would dry out, then I went out and bought a bottle of cheap perfume and dumped it on it. I am actually quite pleased with the outcome. I feel like I have turned this piece of dog crap into something that people might not mind smelling."
Why waste your time on purfume coated dog crap when there are plenty of things in the world that actually smell good to start with?

I think the reason why some Star Wars fanedits come out as good as they do, is that it is something people really have a strong connection with. These guys editing Ep. I - III are not doing so because they want to show that they have such good taste that they can turn something bad into something good, it is because they know it sucks, but they have always wanted to like it, and since it isn't going to get any better on its own, they want to try snip it, beat it, cut it, mold it, into something that fits with the movies they love so much. They really put their heart into it.

With that said, I am absolutely certian there are some edits out there of films other than Star Wars that have had that kind of love and care applied to them. Those are the ones you want to find. I am afraid I gave up on fan edits in general (one or two still pick my interest from time to time) after having enthusiastically downloaded a few and been disappointed by some really akward editing choices, or just downright bad editing (much like your experience with that T3 edit). Here, http://fanedits.com/fan-project-list.cfm you can find a very helpful list of fan edits with some details about them. Happy hunting and good luck.

Most modern commercial DVDs are DVD-9s these days. Dual Layer has been around for quite sometime now. The only official SW DVDs that might be DVD-5s would be the bonus discs for the individually packaged IV, V, and VI, in other words, the GOUT. I do not own the GOUTs, so I am not sure about that. But rest assured that the PT and the 2004 SEs are all on DVD-9s. If you were to watch to backup one of your commercially purchased Star Wars DVDs, you would need to compress the video in order to make it fit onto a DVD-5 (which are the more common, and less expensive DVD-R/+Rs).

As for USB DVD writers, I have a LG brand, Dual layer, external USB 2.0 DVD writer I bought a little over a year ago, it works great and I have gotten good quality burns out of it. But my previous experiences with USB DVD burners has not been so good. It doesn't take much looking at external DVD burner reviews and consumer feedback to see that you are better off with an internal drive. Not to mention internal drives are much less expensive than an external drive. I am a laptop owner, so I am limited to buying a drive specifically designed for my model of computer, which are often fairly pricy, or to a external drive. I choose the later because ti was cheaper, and it is not limited to working with just one computer, if a friend needs to back up his files and doesn't own a DVD drive, I can just bring mine over. It also allows me to get things off of my old laptops. So externals can be very practical. However, if I owned a desktop, I would most definitly go with an internal drive. Externals tend to have buffering problems far more frequently than internals, and the likelihood of making coasters is usually much greater.

An internal is really easy to install, if someone is not able to do it themselves, no doubt they have a kind friend, aquaitance, neighbor, etc. who would be willing to do it for them. I have installed many drives for neighbors and friends of my parents when I was a teenager. It is a pretty simple process that requires minimal knowledge to preform.

10 Episodes. Last I heard they were going to begin airing in March. As far as I know there is no news on the second half yet. This is suppose to be the final season, and the order was for 20 episodes. It is possible that the remaining ten will be filmed and aired in either the Fall of this year (very unlikely) or sometime in 2009.

I too must agree.

For example, if I were to say Mr. Jones is the English teacher at such-and-such high school, it would seem I was saying he is the only one. If Mr. Jones was one of a few English teachers that taught at this particular school, it would be appropriate for me to say he was one of the English teachers that taught there rather the English teacher that taught there. The fact of the matter is that this is very often considered a "plot hole" in the saga. Even if we are content to stretch our imaginations and say that he was not technically claiming Yoda was the only one that had instructed him (and come on, it is pretty obvious George had originally intended Yoda to be THE instructor of Obi, I surely hope nobody still believes that ol' boy George had had Qui-gon planned to be the true master all along), the fact that so many people regard this as a plot hole seems like enough reason for the change without a second thought.

Also, you would think that if anyone were to be considered "THE Jedi master who instructed" Obi-Wan, it would be Qui-gon, since he was Obi-Wan's master. Yoda was more of a Jedi kindergarden teacher. The whole Yoda teaches the youngling thing really felt like it was a "quick fix" to the problem of "oh, crap, I totally forgot that Yoda was suppose to be Obi-Wan's master. Hmm, what it the best way to resolove that... these fans are a lot smarter than I thought... ah, I got it!" (don't think it is possible for George to forget such an important detail? What about when they had to go back and film a scene of Obi-Wan picking up Anakin's lightsaber because "they kinda forgot he gave it to Luke in A New Hope", that was a pretty important detail they managed to forget. How about Leia remembering her mother? I think it is pretty safe to say George didn't bother rewatching the Star Wars trilogy before setting out to write the PT).

Star Wars is Evil
Time
D'oh. I was afraid it might come to this someday. When the Christian HQ announced that Christians were not allowed to read Harry Potter, I abliged and even sent letter of protest to local bookstores and hate mail to J. K. Rowling. I did the same when His Dark Materials made their way to the US. Later, when a movie version of the first book of the Chronicles of Narnia was announced and stirred up the waters, the old series of books suddenly became visible to the Christian Head Quarters and were deemed as demonic, so I shunned them as well, again sending letters of protest to any books store in my area evil enough to carry these Satanic kids books. When I was about to send my hate mail to Mr. Clive Stamples Lewis, I discovered that he has been dead for sometime, so I was forced to send my hate mail to one of his step son's, cursing him for the sins of his step father. I had to take similar action with the author of the horribly anti-Christian Lord of the Rings books, since as it turns out, he too has been dead for some time (seems we Christians don't start hating things until they get a film adaption based off of them).

I had hoped it would never come to this, but now that Christians have decided Star Wars is evil, I am afraid I will have to burn all my DVDs and collectables, and never visit this forum again. The years I have spent here have been fun. I will miss you all greatly (yes, even Seanwookie), but my religion is most important to me and if the International Head Quarters of All Christians Everywhere have decided that Star Wars is evil, then I must follow their lead.

Excuse me as I must go now and write hate mail to Mr. Lucas, and make preparations to boycott every store that sells licensed Star Wars products. This will be my last and final post. See you all in hell.

with love,

Subtitle tracks don't take up much space at all, essentially they are just text files. I like that this has such a wide range of subtitles. Something most fanedits and preservations sorely lack. I think the trailers are pretty short, and the Jabba scene isn't too long and would have been part of the movie anyway had it not been cliped, so they shouldn't suck away too much of the main feature's overall quality.

adywan, I also like that you have the Changes & Fixes Trivia subtitle track. That will be a great bonus.

Sorry to hear you are getting so much crap from people. Fake cease and desist orders? Some people have way too much time on their hands. I suppose the fact that your edit has attracted this much attention ought to be taken as a pretty big compliment.

I am guessing the deleted Jar Jar and Bail Alderaanian (sp?) death scene will be on the DVD-9?
