Yeah, no, for some reason the whole childish gay joke just doesn't bother me. With this thread you have really managed to insult yourself more than anybody else. Fortunately for you, you don't care what others think about you. If you did, then you'd be the one wanting this thread dead and buried. I am just thrilled that your immature nonsense is now being confined to this thread for the most part, rather than plaguing any other discussions on these boards.

@ everybody other than GA, I have no idea why you guys are still arguing over this. It is the dumbest argument. Of course people can drink responsibly, people do it all the time. Why would you even consider arguing with somebody who makes such an outrageous claim that it is impossible to drink responsibly? This whole argument is so painfully idiotic. It is like having a serious debate as to the exact number of licks it really takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop, so unbelievably futile. Feel free to continue if you like, but please step away from the computer and reflect on how dumb it is to argue about this before deciding to go on and prove GA wrong.

The Dark Knight Movie Discussion (July 18th, 2008)
Time

I saw the cartoon Gotham Knight. I didn't think I'd like it at all, but I enjoyed it. It was FAR from perfect. And the changing animations, while interesting and artsy, kind of annoyed me. I really liked the animation of the Scarcrow segment. At first it was annoying because batman's nose was way too long, then the animation style really grew on me. I liked the overly violent anime style of it. I'd love to see a full length Batman cartoon with a bit more depth to it with that type of animation consistent throughout. Maybe even a new Batman animated series targeted for adults.

Congratulations on the dog. You still sticking with the name Yotsuba? It's not a bad name, very unique.

Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time

The SNES will always be to me the greatest system ever made. The first time I saw one in action at my friends house I was dumbfounded. The only game he had was Super Mario World, and I just couldn't get over the detailed graphics and the amazing colors. The way Mario's hat would fly up in the air a bit as he fell and the dust that came up from his feet as he made a quick stop. The characters were so detailed and they had such depth to them. I remember I'd dream about getting my own SNES and wake up to realize it was only a dream and I'd feel so disappointed. When I finally got my own I was really excited. The SNES era was the hight of gaming for me, I can never imagine getting immersed in a video game again like I did when playing A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Star Fox, or Super Metroid. Even the N64 and the novelty of playing as these characters for the first time in 3D wasn't quite equal to the excitment of going from playing Zelda in 8bit to playing Zelda in 16bit.

And yeah, the Super Star Wars games are crazy hard. One of my buddies bought a GameGenie, and the first thing we did with it was stay up late beating Super Star Wars straight through from start to finish. As hard as Super Star Wars and Super Empire Strikes Back were (Super ROTJ was a breeze in comparison), the NES counter parts made them feel really easy. Empire Strikes Back for the NES was one of my favorite games on the system, countless hours wasted, and I never managed to get off of Dagobah.

Why hasn't anyone done a DVD transfer of the TPM LD? I mean, you guy are all about preservation, right? Well, here's something that needs preserving!

I am 99.9% certain that somebody has done a TPM transfer, and that it is available on some peoples trade lists or through the appropriate channels. You don't hear about it much because it just isn't in that high of demand. I meant to get my hands on a copy long ago just to have it, but I never got around to it.

What about when the blu-ray comes out? If Lucas changes it to CG Yoda for blu-ray, and there's no "original" blu-ray release, I think a lot of TPM fans are going to be pissed.

The DVD version is not the original either. It contains considerably more than just a few minor changes from the theatrical version. The original only exists on VHS. And I am fully expecting there never to be a puppet Yoda on any Blu-ray TPM release. I wonder what the PT guys who tell us OOT guys to shut up, stop complaining and move on will be saying then. Wonder if they will bend over and take it (probably), or if they will protest at all.

I can already imagine a Blu-ray release several years down the road that features the original version of The Phantom Menace in plain old anamorphic DVD quality on a second disc as a bonus feature.

I think the reason why some people want the CG Yoda is that they just want something different on these disc than what is already out there. Also, as much as I hate CG, that puppet just never looked right. I extreme difference in Yoda's look between Phantom and Clones is almost as jarring as the difference between his look from ROTJ and TPM. I still don't understand how that puppet went so wrong...

The bottom line is, the version of TPM with the puppet is and always will still be out there. I have said it many times, I have no problem with special editions or director's cuts, but I really want to be able to see it the way it was originally seen. As long as that original version is out there for me to enjoy, I have no complaints (which brings us to the fact that the original, and to me much preferred version, of The Phantom Menace is not out there on DVD, which, as much as I hate the PT, I still find unfortunate). So I do not think it is at all wishy washy of some people here to wish for this change.

It is not so much that this has been rereleased SO many times, but more over that it is being rereleased so many times without ever bothering to fix the glaring issues. You know, even with a non-anamorphic GOUT, I might have payed money for the 04 set, if it were not for the monolingual creative decisions. Reversed audio and color changing lightsabers, that is just shoddy as can be. In this day and age you ought not be able to get away with making poor quality products like that, especially on such a wide selling movie, and it is even more amazing that it has managed to get repackaged this many times without so much as a thought of fixing them. For a "perfectionist" George sure doesn't mind releasing imperfect products. Surprising the only people that really complain about the errors are insignificant little folks like ourselves. You'd probably never hear a peep about the color or audio errors on TFN, and if you did, the complainer would be violently linched in the square.

So Apparently Del Rey is putting out another shitty 9 novel series following Legacy of the Force. (Spoilers inside)
Time

I know. Jedi have always been cool, but my favorite aspect of Star Wars has always been more in the dog fights, military stuff, and the world of crime and smugglers. The common people who are trying to survive and or fight for what they believe in in a cold and unjust galaxy that puts very little value on life. I remember how annoyed I was when Dark Forces 2 became Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. That was the beginning of a long trend of giving everyone a lightsaber. It reminds me of when I was a little kid and me and my friends would be playing Star Wars and everyone wanted to be Luke so they could use the force and have a lightsaber. I don't know how many times I heard kids compromise by saying, okay, I'll be Han, but I still get to use the force and have a lightsaber. There is so much more to Star Wars than the Jedi and the force, unfortunately with the PT era we are now perpetually stuck in, EVERY hero has got to be a Jedi.

When I was a kid Wedge was always my absolute favorite character, and I never had to fight with the other kids in order to be him. That is also why I liked Dark Forces and Kyle Katarn so much, as well as Shadows of the Empire and Dash Render. Whatever bad things you can say about SOTE, I still find it 100% more Star Wars esque than the PT or anything I see on the shelfs or in advertisements today.

I also really liked the Boba Fett comics. I didn't feel they really fit all that well with the Boba Fett from the trilogy, but I enjoy seeing Fett placed in kind of an anti-hero Batman-like (costumed detective work with a lot of cool gagets) mercenary who solved mysteries and collected bounties. They too opened up a door to that part of the SW galaxy I really loved. The Dark Horse Droids comic were among my favorites as well, simply because they reached out into a part of the SW galaxy that was completely unfamiliar and had nothing to do with what we'd seen in the movies other than the fact they were told through the eyes of two very familiar characters.

It would almost be cooler if these sets did not include the GOUT as the second disc, but rather a real bonus disc for each of the original trilogy titles. They have plenty of material to work from, as proven by fan creations like the rowman sets. I'd like to see some of that stuff make an official release on a bonus disc. Of course, I am not fooling myself, I know there is no chance that is happening.

I think Sky said he had no intention of ever seeing it. When he said it sucked, he probably based that on the vast majority of reviews that state as much.

Ever since I read that the Force Unleashed was going to have a PS2 released (which means I have a console that can play it), I had kind of hoped it would turn out to be surprisingly good, but it doesn't sound like that will be the case. Oh well.

If this has a good release (at least with anamorphic widescreen and good sound + picture quality) of the OOT I might buy it and if not, forget about it. I just hope it has it.

Don't count on it! You just described the perfect DVD set of Star Wars any of us could have ever dreamed of having. If it has an anamorphic OOT, I wouldn't hesitate to put it on my to buy list.

I am probably about the only person here who never wasted any money on the '04, '05, or '06 DVD sets. I learned my lesson after I found myself owning three different VHS sets. My first set of Star Wars DVDs, if I ever get any, will be the only set I ever buy, so I am waiting for the right set to come along, which will probably never happen.

Sounds about right. They can do that because of the fans who say, "Ah, sweet, another SW box set, can't wait to add this to my collections. I am so stoked I can barely contain myself at the very thought of buying the exact same thing all over again, again. Excuse me while I go dance around the block in order to calm my excitement!"

Will the The New J.J. Abrams Star Trek destroy the Legacy of the original 1960's series? Discussion
Time

I really enjoy Star Trek, but I am by no means a Trekkie. I'd even hesitate to call myself a 'Star Trek fan' because that term seems to carry so much along with it, and I am sure most true fans would find me a disgrace to their kind.

That said, I am not too worried about this upcoming film. Back when Voyager had its finale, and Insurrection was the latest film, I feel ST had quite a bit of respectability left too it. Many people didn't like Voyager as a show nor Insurrection as a movie, but I still felt that it was a decently high point at the time. Then Enterprise and Nemesis came along. Enterprise was the ST equivalent of the SW prequels to me. Horrible show that reconned and destroyed so many things, while managing to suck and bore the crap out of anyone loyal enough to still be watching it after season one. Still can't believe they wasted a whole freaking season on the same stupid 9/11 based terror attack plot line.

Nemesis could have been a good movie... but it just wasn't... for soooo many reasons...

I really am not expecting anything worthwhile from this new movie and would actually rather be seeing a sequel to Nemesis, though I would not be expecting anything good from that either.

The people involved in this new movie have stated so many times that they are trying to reach out to a new audience and attract the average movie goer with no previous Star Trek experience. Oops. To me that spells trouble. Since Batman Begins and Casino Royal went over so well as reboots of their respective franchise, everyone has been trying the reboot, but they don't always work. I am afraid this new ST is not destined to be a Batman Begins, as I am pretty sure the makers are trying to make it to be. In the end I predict it will be a bit of a bastard child, with the true ST fans ignoring it for being crap that forsakes fans and caters to a new audience, and I think it will be ignored by the new audience, the average movie goer, simply because it is Star Trek.

Upcoming Fall TV Season What are you most Looking Forward to seeing?
Time

I am kind of looking forward to seeing how the Sarah Connor Chronicles turn out for their second season. I also really enjoy watching The Office with my wife, so I am kind of looking forward to that too. I don't watch a lot of TV, so I think that is about it. The other shows I like (Lost and BSG) are not starting again until the Spring 09 season.

This is probably the most on topic thread for this. My headcrab arrived today along with my Black Mesa and Aperture Science mugs. Thanks again LJ for tipping me off to the existence of plush headcrabs. My wife doesn't exactly understand why I spent money on this ugly little thing that gives her the creeps, but I absolutely love the little guy. My only complaint is he seems a bit darker than he should be, but I knew this from the picture at the Valve store before I bought it and was still very excited to buy it anyway. In the game, especially in the original Half-Life, they are more the pale whitish color of a plucked raw chicken. Other than the color, this thing is perfect, I really like that it has poseable limbs. The Black Mesa mug is pretty cool too. I really wish they would have had Black Mesa t-shirts, like the one Alyx is wearing in Half-Life 2.

So I'm getting a dog/what pets do you have

Darth Solo said:

Seems stupid talking "english" to an animal, yet it makes scence, somehow. Nothing is worse in this day and age is referring to your pets as "pussy" though, ever!

What else would you speak to it in? Portuguese? Of course it makes sense speaking to your dog in English, if that is your native tongue, the language you speak around the house, or even the only language you know, it is the only way that you could communicate with your dog (unless you want to resort to grunting to it, which I am sure would work just as well, but I for one would feel stupid doing so). Your dog will learn the commands in whatever language you speak to it in. English is not my wife's native language, so she does not speak to her dog in English, but I talk to him in English. I can speak her language, but the dog never listens to a word I say anyway, so it does not matter.

As far as there being nothing worse in this day and age than calling your pets "pussy", I can think of plenty of worse things to call them...

Anyway, are you saying it is degrading to your poor pet to be called a wimp? Or are you saying that you should never refer to your pets with a slang word for genitalia? Because that second one would be really weird. At any rate, I am pretty sure it is still okay to use the term pussycat. Reminds me, when I was a kid I was really into James Bond, I use to always have a hard time saying the title Octopussy. It just seemed so wrong as a title. You've also got to keep in mind that the word can have a very different, and much gentler meaning in the English of those who live to the east of us North America dwellers.

The Force Unleashed is true to the F.U. part
Time

Yeah, as much as I hate the whole idea of the The Force Unleashed story wise, as just a mindless Star Wars game where you can go around with a light saber and force powers, it looks pretty cool. Come on, we all spent our childhoods wanting to do that kind of stuff, and wishing there was a game that really made you feel like a Jedi. Dark Forces II was the first game that did that for us, and as lame as the story line and cut scenes were to that game, it was awesome. Jedi Knight II was even better, and Jedi Academy kind of managed to blow. If the Force Unleashed manages to capture any of that feel at all, it could be fun.

Just put this in the same category as you'd put Elseworlds or What If comics, they don't fit into the real story line, but they are as fun as hell to read.

LFM already markets the crap out of Star Wars in every way possible, just because they are marketing the crap out of this as well does not have to ruin the whole game (if it turns out to be even worth playing). Just ignore the hype and play the game, or don't.

So I'm getting a dog/what pets do you have
Time

My wife has a Yorkshire Terrier, he is a pretty cool little dog. Usually when you see pictures of Yorkies they look like really gay dogs, but my wife keeps her's hair short and he looks pretty cool. My wife's dog rarely ever barks, except when he needs to go out. Sometimes when he thinks he sees something he lets out this weird little growl that sounds just like an Ewok. He walks around the house and plays with his little toys and doesn't get too annoying.

I highly dislike dogs, just not a pet guy, so I really didn't like the idea of having a dog in the house, but I had to make a compromise for my wife. He grew on me pretty fast, and all the things I hate about house dogs he seems to be lacking, doesn't bark, doesn't beg, does't jump up on people.

As far as things you need to know, if you get a really small dog like a dachshund, watch your step. My biggest fear is having to tell my wife I stepped on her dog and killed it. Also, if you get one young enough that it is not already house broken, make sure you house break it. Unless he has a doggy door or someother way out of your house/apartment on his own, you've got to take it out at least a couple of times a day. Smallers dogs are nice because they eat less and save you money on dog food.
