The Brave Little Toaster (1987) 4K 35mm Film Scan! (WIP)

I think it would be a good idea to consult the director just as a general guidance for this project. I mean heck, I think he’d be down for a fan remaster if no big company wants to handle it! That said, I wouldn’t take his word as gospel, as we all know how directors can screw up their own films by revising them (Star Wars and LoTR for instance). But if we could get an idea of the vision for how it would be screened, and how the color grading is meant to be, it could be a big help for a start.

That’s why Jerry is also bringing the movie’s art director Brian McEntee in on the project.

And there will be no HDR/ Dolby Vision colour grade. I see people ask this a lot, along with asking for a Dolby Atmos sound mix. I’m just a guy working on a home PC and not in a fully equipped professional studio. I just don;t have the facilities to be able to do things like this.

Will they have DTS-HD Master Audio sound mixes instead?

V2 Torrent of my Upscale is live on the pirate bay. Message me if you’re having issues finding it.

I may potentially try a 60fps conversion for the fun of it at some point. I’ll let everybody know if I do

Thank you! I’ve found it on PB, even though now it’s still stuck at metadata downloading.

I can’t download it, either.

If I remember correctly Adywan did consider doing it and did some testing but it was too much work for something that ultimatly looked worse than no glow.

Really I’m surprised because a fan did the glow for the prequels lightsabers on YouTube and it looked great.

This video?

There’s a continuity error that was not fixed for the original version of ANH:R. R2’s restraning bolt mark appears in the shot where he collapses after the Jawas tase him before he’s supposed to have gotten the bolt.

Also, in certain shots, there’s a white spot in the area where the bolt was already put on:

@adywan Is it possible for you to do a hdr grade for your revisited Star Wars trilogy Updating the good cgi effects with modern cgi like cloud city etc. maybe even updating sly snootles just her to look a bit better and making the lightsabers look how they do in the sequel films? If not I understand just was wondering that’s all. Only posting here as well as the dm because I didn’t know if you answered dms.

The re-rotoscoped lightsabers in TESB:R already look very nice to me. You mean you want the glow to illuminate a little more onto the characters and environments?

Yes that on top of the re-rotoscoping.

TESB:R is all finished now. I don’t mean to speak for Adywan, but I don’t think it’s worth going back to do that.

STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **
Time

It appears that Anakin’s force ghost in the upcoming novel, “Shadow of the Sith” will be the Hayden Christensen version.

“Standing between himself and the wraiths was another figure—a man in flowing pale robes, his back to Luke, his head hidden under a voluminous hood… When the lightning flashed, Luke could see the nine solid wraiths through the form of the man who stood between them and their quarry… The blue figure lifted his hood back to reveal the strong, sharp face of a young man, his gaze intense beneath a furrowed brow that was bisected by straight, vertical scar. His thick hair was shoulder-length and had a slight wave to it. Anakin Skywalker reached out his hand.”

The Brave Little Toaster (1987) 4K 35mm Film Scan! (WIP)
Time

From my Facebook conversation with writer/director Jerry Rees:

I knew that even though my primary intention was for a theatrical release with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, it was destined to eventually have a life on home video, which was 4:3 at the time. (little did I know it would only have the home video life)

So I made sure that our compositions for every shot worked in both formats. We’d start with a 1.85.1 composition that worked dynamically, then extend the drawing above and below to fill a 4:3 frame. To be sure that we were being honest with ourselves, I didn’t allow the use of the transparent all-aspect-ratios chart that was usually laid over top of the drawings. When you can see through the chart, and perceive extra information that will not actually be visible to the audience, you can make mistakes in judgement. Instead, I had the two aspect ratios cut into black cards that would register to the pegs on the desk, and mask out everything except for what was visible within the frame. This “no cheating” approach helped us be more dynamic.

The PAL version destroyed the intentional slow increase of red filtering through the section where Rob is in peril. If you look at the ONE SHOT where the masher teeth are lowering down, but stop just above Rob’s hand, you can see how intense the red was supposed to be before fading back to normal as the danger stopped.

yes. I won’t be using the SE version of the Hutt. Originally i was going to create a new model but i’m waiting to see if a better version appears in the Kenobi show before i decide what route to take.

What don’t you like about the SE hut? I don’t see anything wrong with it.

Adywan, since you’re removing the two SE shots in the “look sir, droids!” scene partially because they use the ROTJ helmets, does that mean you’re going to replace the SE shot of the Stormtroopers facing Han in the hangar bay? I really hope you don’t. The fact that Han is stopping dead in his tracks yelling, because he sees an entire room of hundreds of Stormtroopers facing him, rather than having it just be a normal-looking room with only a few troopers, works much better because I think that makes the scene play out a little funnier and much more effectively.

I mean, in the original version it’s a dead end, which is extremely funny.

Which do you prefer, and why?

Here’s a set photo that shows the hut that’s being used for the series:

Notice it has the dome on the roof from the SE version.

No, that’s a different shot. I was actually referring to the one where Luke and Obi-wan are entering the cantina.

The way I’ve always preferred the “Look sir, droids!” scene is the way it was shown in the Theatrical version, but with only one CGI dewback in the background.

But if they don’t hold up enough to be used for the HD version then so be it.

He is going keep the CG dewbacks parked outside the Cantina, from what I remember.

He isn’t. If you look back at the comparisons he isn’t.

Really? I think I remember him saying he was going to fix that compositing error where the original Dewback’s snout could be seen behind the CG one.
