The Brave Little Toaster (1987) 4K 35mm Film Scan! (WIP)

Ok so small update:
Because of something out of our control the BLT scans are no longer on Google Drive. We will find an alternative (possibly FTP or torrent) but for now, no downloads are available. I will keep everyone updated on when I can get them back up, but rest assured the files are safe on an LTO Tape and I have them backed up on my own hard drive so they will not be lost anytime soon.

Are you doing everything to remove all of the dirt and film damage?

Cinderella (1950) 35mm Preservation opportunity! (a WIP)
Time

I was re-watching the “From Rags to Riches” documentary on the Cinderella Platinum Edition DVD, and I noticed it uses an older transfer that preserves details and colors better. I’m pretty sure it’s the 1995 laserdisc scan, but I don’t know where to find a scan of it online. Could someone please help me?

I’ve been getting a lot of PMs about people wanting access to the folder. If you didn’t already have access before from donating I’m not going to give access unless it’s someone working on the project directly. I will not be handing out downloads for many reasons so please don’t ask. If you have donated and can’t access the folder for some reason I will make sure to fix that, but please do not clutter my DMs with download requests if you haven’t contributed anything to the project

I wish I would have seen this post before reading it you were having a hard time getting a laser disc copy my son has a laser disc copy I would have graciously donated the audio track to you. Oh well maybe next time very much looking forward to the release

I’m glad I ended up with a copy of the laserdisc.
Even though it appears to be the same scan as the DVD
with the beginning of the movie looking like it was scanned
during an earthquake, the coloring is completely different.
I believe it is much closer the original film than the DVD.
You do get the superior audio track in my opinion.
I ended up transferring an upscaled version of the laserdisc
and creating a Blu-ray for me to watch until the 4k restoration
is complete. I included the 24 Bit 96 kHz audio from the laserdisc
and the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio from the DVD for comparison.
I also included the English, French and Spanish subtitles from
the DVD.
If anyone is interested, I can provide a link to download this version.
I have an ISO file that can be burned to a single layer BD-R so you
get a hard copy with menus and I made an MKV file that is the
same size. PM me for the link.

How do the laserdisc and DVD tracks compare, specifically?

It’s not a program you can download and do what you will with it. They control everything.
You give them the recordings and tell them what you want, and they do it for you. So if you try to use a celebrity voice without permission they’ll put a halt to it.

I get it but it’s still disappointing to hear that we can’t fix palpatine’s voice in the part of the clone wars where he is voiced Tim curry who doesn’t remotely sound like palpatine and make better takes for jango’s actor doing boba fett in empire. 😦

Did no one seriously tell Tim Curry that Valorum is pronounced “Vuh-LOR-um,” and not “VAL-or-um”?

I think he posted them at some point on one of his threads for the SE edits. I remember watching them. But idk if they’re still up.

I like the idea of using Respeecher to fix all lines of boba fett except the new take hal9000 found of as you wish is pretty much perfect and that program is amazing and can improve the rest.

Excuse My ignorance but what is “Respeecher” and how does it work to fix dialog?

Respeecher is a sound editing tool that is able to recreate the voices of anyone regardless of the source audio recording’s quality. It was used to recreate the voice of a 40-years-younger Mark Hamill in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, and a 40-years-younger James Earl Jones in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

Anyone tried this on that “You’re mother” line people were going on about in the ROTJ:R thread a couple of years ago?

I remember someone tried that, but it didn’t exactly sound seamless.

Why exactly were Vader’s lines “Your powers are weak, old man” and “You should not have come back” switched in the original ANH:R? You never gave a reason.

Yeah, he will be fixing all that.
and for the swapped lines, he has already explained that in a post right after the release of that sneak peek,
stating: “The lines were swapped around in the original ANH:R, so i kept it that way.”

Why were they swapped in the first place?

When I asked Jerry how the climax with Rob stuck on the conveyor belt would need to be color corrected, so that it gets more red with each shot, as intended. He gave me this answer:

If a few non-red shots are color corrected before and after that section, then you can just leave the same setting and all the reds will increase and decrease as intended. The color correction doesn’t have to change shot-by-shot within a given reel. Set one shot correctly within a reel and the rest should remain correct in that same reel.

I showed Jerry the clip, and this is what he told me:

Not bad! The raw scan appears (on my laptop screen) like it needs to be a bit darker and bit more saturated. The lighter, less saturated image has less richness than our original paints. But it’s a matter of very doable tweaks. This isn’t wildly astray or anything.

And as I had hoped, it is consistent across all shots. The correction settings for one shot would apply to all shots on that same film reel.

Once I get some cels photographed with the universal color chart, that will undoubtedly help.

Thanks for sending the link!

Cheers,
Jerry

These minor changes were made to TESB with the release of the 4K version. Do you think they’re necessary enough to be added to TESB:R when you make the Blu-Ray for it?

As of now, I highly doubt that Ady would return to ESB:R to redo the changes to form a native 1080p video, lossless audio, or to apply any more fixes to just anything, even if the changes that were made on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray could’ve helped ESB:R.

He said he has the software to make the audio lossless.

What’s the plan for this when it’s finished? Is this going to be shared publicly or is this for donors only?

I plan to share it publicly. Hopefully as a YouTube upload with Kineko Video and 100% on Archive.org . As of now I’m only keeping proxies and raw scans private to donors because I wouldn’t want to release an unfinished project publicly. But once a finished restoration comes about I will release both the raw scan and restoration for archival. I wouldn’t want any of this projects work becoming lost and I want as many people possible to see it (and maybe even encourage Disney to release their own).

PS: I will also look into possibility of having the scans stored on a LTO Tape. I know someone who owns a LTO set up and 100% want this archived on something reliable and not just hard drives

The Archive.org version will be fully uncompressed, right?

Anything yet?

Should be ready before the end of the week. Like I said the download speeds for this are VERY slow so it takes time. Reel 4 is close to being done. Download speeds on their end are only 500 kb/s and the download has been ongoing since July 18th. It will be ready when it’s ready. In the mean time here is a color corrected frame from the raw scan to give a little preview of the colors:
https://i.slow.pics/WRJwIN5l.png

What happened to doing it with the director through Zoom?

He’s been busy. He (imo) offered a better alternative which is to just send cels scans and color charts which will help with getting some accurate color correction.

Are there really cel scans and color charts for EVERY shot/scene?

idk

Jerry told me this:

“I’m not too busy to do all Zoom meetings - just the ones that don’t fit my schedule. I do hope to find a good time that works for him and for me.”

Something else: How will you know which colors are the correct ones?
