Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace: Redemption ** unfinished project **

Uh... x264 is just an implementation of H.264/AVC, which is MPEG-4.

The MPEG-4 you are thinking of must be Avanced Simple Profile or something.

And the DVD's really are drowning in a sea of artifacts, Like the opening battle in my EPIII DVD, if I scale it up to my display size t oview it fullscreen it's hard to tell what is spaceship, planet, or just artifact mud. Granted, this is a visually dense scene with lots of movement but it's still terrible.

I'm wondering about the above still.  Is Luke outside or inside?  The set makes him look like he is walking inside of a hallway when he ought to be in an alley between buildings.

I think it was a fully enclosed interior corridor before the SE. I never liked those "just because we can" "photoshops" to make it look more open anyway.

Highlight what it does to draw attention away from what it doesn't. Yes. Brilliant.

Also, vaderios. I'm sorry but if you look at the colours, shading, shape, scale and all of the set compare to your model.... well, at this rate they'll never look alike.

As for how Luke ends up on the vane, well it seems to be dumb luck that he falls out of the vent exactly where it meets the vane, putting him close enough to land on the presumably sturdy beams.

I still think it looks completely different, and the perspective looks like it's off as well compared to the "horizon" of the underbelly of cloud city.

And I agree with savmagoett. It always looked like the hatch would be closer to the camera rather than beside Luke or further away.

Can't disagree with you more. It's a 2 second shot and with the speed an object needs to fall it wouldn't matter how clear you made the object (which it already is now) it would just be the same old blur as its falling. And not only that but what would the object need to look like so it looks like a piece of the vane that will be noticeable enough for this quick shot?

Also i really can't see how the script give this a more dramatic effect than the movie.

I haven't actually read the script, I simply assumed this was true:

Tobar said:

I had always thought it was his hand. But according to the script:

There is an ominous cracking sound from the base of the weather vane and a piece breaks off, falling into the clouds far below.

You take the word "clear" too literally. I was thinking that if the piece is shown breaking off along with an unsettling sound effect, it will not only clear up what is falling, but also add the element of "Oh dear, this thing is falling apart!" if you know what I mean?

That model looks much too flat compared to the set. I also thought the whole thing was well out of frame anyways.

adywan said:

It's a section of the vane. Sometimes things don't need to be made obvious to the audience. That was a huge problem, as i have said before, with the PT - everything was explained too much. But i've never believed that it was Lukes hand/saber becausse that would have been thrown out of the city a long time before and it certainly wouldn't have gone through the exact same shaft.  Luke lands pretty hard on the vane and part of it breaks off. I'm certainly not going to be making it look any clearer because it doesn't need it.

I'll have to disagree here. Not everything needs to be made obvious, no. But this is something that in the script has a dramatic effect, which is not present in the movie. And to boot has caused nothing but confusion for 30 years. Some things, yes.

Not this thing.

Personally I think it would be a little too convenient for Luke's hand/lightsaber to be falling down the same shaft he does, not to mention at about the same time even though there must've been at least a minute between it being cut off and Luke jumping.

Yeah obviously it's the explanation you consider the last because it's so unlikely. But unlikely things do happen. And the thing kinda looks like his hand+saber.

But as I said, one major improvement that could be made is to make it clearer that it is a piece of cloud city like the script says.

IF it was his saber/hand wouldnt be following luke during his vein fall?

isnt the hand/saber was off several time before luke fell?

makes sense?

Not really making sense no. But I'll try.

So if it was his hand it wouldn't follow him because it was off for quite a while before Luke jumped. Unless this is what you said, in which case; we don't know how cloud city works. There's a billion not conceived of cases that could make his hand fall in a different vent close enough to be seen when it falls down, and spend enough time there to only fall after Luke has been hanging around for a bit.

But as the script has revealed it is likely not his hand. Adywan, working on an HD version and all should be able to tell what it is anyways.

I always thought it was his hand. From another vent that it landed in possibly.

Wait, why does Bespin have ground? I thought it was a gas giant.

But yeah if the script says that, I guess we can assume that's what it's supposed to be. One major improvement that could be made then is to make it more obvious what it is.

Also, why do you need external sources for the shape of cloud city? There are several very nice shots that together show exactly what it looks like in the film.

Never mind I am a doofus.

Just want to say I'd be in favour of simply flattening the bottom of cloud city to solve the dissonance between the supertotals and the close up shots. There's something about the flat bottom. It just looks good.

And the approach shot doesn't sit right with me, cloud city looks wrong, and the shading appears off too.

MPEG-2 is ancient. It needs huge bitrates (and thus filesizes) to look anything decent, and still most DVD's I have are drowning in a sea of artifacts. Not only that, the whole telecine process is pretty much obsolete, as most playback systems can smoothly represent whatever framerate you feed them nowadays. One hears terrible things of NTSC judder and has witnessed the agony of PAL speedup oneself. And to add to the filesize is the fact that even with support for anamorphics DVD's feel the need to have hardcoded black bars.
